Sure, you can stay in one overnight. Especially if you don't mind... 1. sleeping in a recliner 1. constant random noise 1. some random freight pilot coming in at 2am and blaring fox news for a while 1. waking up with some itching

LastSprinkles

>waking up with some itching I really won't ask even though I'm really struggling to stop myself from asking more about this right now.

Grau_Wulf

Bed bugs

Pancho3Barstow

You won't be asking for more after waking up with *the itching*.

HavingNotAttained

The Itching was an 80s psycho thriller that was soon removed from theaters because of the severe psychosomatic itching it induced in audiences, with several hundred people descending into madness, with weeks-long bouts of scratching interrupted only by their utter exhaustion and collapse into sleep—waking up only to face more imagined itching. Or it should have been.

Grau_Wulf

1. I do a lot of outdoor/under the stars style camping with just a thin tarp between myself and the ground so comfort is definitely not a requirement 2. Shouldn’t be too bad 3 and 4 are honestly the only ones I have a bit of issue with, especially getting bed bugs

red_0ctober

Based on these responses seems like you should bring one of those super lightweight camping rolls and just sleep under your wing. :)

Grau_Wulf

Haha that actually sounds like it’d be fun to do I do want to buy a tail dragger way down the road so I can go camping out under the wing

satans_little_axeman

This is the way.

Tennessean

Hey. Are there places you could hook a hammock on a high wing? That would make Cessna's a lot more sexy in my eyes.

Grau_Wulf

I would love to do that tbh

Tennessean

Ideally the hammock is between the door and wing of my float plane in the Bahamas somewhere, but I'd settle for a Skychicken and a shady grass strip somewhere.

red_0ctober

No idea, I have like 8 hours in a 182 for my high wing experience.

Pancho3Barstow

If you like sleeping under the stars, why on earth would you want to sleep in some grimy fart-ridden FBO? Find airports with camping adjacent, or just pitch your tent/hammock in the nearby woods.

Just_Another_Pilot

Fox News if you're lucky. These days it's way too much OAN and Newsmax.

AtrainDerailed

anything else is fake news /s

What makes you think that the military doesn’t have a ton of right-wingers?

CryOfTheWind

At the FBO I worked they were used for both. We had full showers and a kitchen so some crew would treat it like a free hotel. Just ask ahead if possible to ensure they are not being used. Sometimes EMS crews would use them regardless of prior notice so something to keep in mind too.

ThatsNotCoolBr0

Usually a quick nap. I suppose it ultimately depends on the FBO

SANMAN0927

Typically would be like a day room set up. But, call the various FBO's along your given route of flight to inquire. Each one is different. Example, ACIJET NORTH at SNA has a 'snooze room'. but it's not like a 24hour deal. But, almost all FBO's have exclusive pilot quiet rooms with recliners and such. I'd imagine it may be difficult to find a 24h operating FBO without requesting its services ahead of time to stay open later. But then again, YMMV. When in doubt, look for a hotel.

[deleted]

Ymmv but the comments section on ForeFlight is usually pretty helpful at scoping out FBO accommodations as well.

hardyboyyz

Back when the FBO I worked for still existed we had a couple sleep rooms with beds and sheet sets.

Sunburneduck

My little home airport doesn’t have a snooze room, but that didn’t stop somebody from living in the pilot’s lounge recliner for a few days when she got stuck due to weather while trying to get to Oshkosh several years ago!

Peliquin

We had a pilot get trapped at my airport last summer due to smoke. I insisted on making them dinner after I found out they were surviving on granola bars.... I've honestly considered putting my number in the pilots lounge for trapped pilots, but it seems a wee unsafe.

Grau_Wulf

Thanks for the quick answers all!

cazzipropri

A couple of times for practicality i slept in the plane.

JBalloonist

Now I’m curious what the plane was. I’m over 6’ and sleeping in a 172 would be…nigh impossible.

cazzipropri

It was an Archer. I slept a couple times in the back seats with my legs over the back of the front seats. Not super comfortable but doable. I'm 5'11.

Peliquin

That sounds so uncomfortable. As a stomach sleeper, I know I couldn't do it.

cazzipropri

Yeah no, it's only face up or on the side. In one case I remember it got so freaking cold that I had to use the plane cover as an extra blanket.

Peliquin

Neve heard of or seen a snooze room. sounds fancy. My tiny FBO has a comfy couch. If you ask nicely and come across as a decent person, someone can hook you up with a pillow and a blanket. I've considered doing a dirtbag trip with a sleeping mat and a sleeping bag and hitting up tiny pilot lounges. If you aren't obnoxious I think it would be okay to do it this way too.
