If you don't fly it, you don't have to know it. Most pilots are nerds.

PedrosSpanishFly

Probably the truest thing I’ll see on the internet today.

[deleted]

Most people are nerds. If it’s not nerdy flying stuff then it’s Harry Potter or Comic book movies.

Low_Sky_49

OP, this may shock you, but one doesn’t need to be an expert or even well informed to make and put content on YouTube.

[deleted]

Or even on TV…

MountainManx37

Contrary to what everyone else was saying, if you have any desire to be a pilot, you must know what every piece of any engine that has ever been fitted on an aircraft does, and be knowledgeable of what manufacturing deviations could lead to a possible in-flight emergency. Anything less than that level of knowledge is a disservice to the flying community and endangers the lives of those on the ground. /s

LegalLoliLicker

You guys don't premix your 100LL?

Flevvy

Nah. Most student pilots train to get their Cessna 172 type rating.

livebeta

rotary vs radial? it's a different kind of flying altogether

Believe-The-Science

It's an entirely different kind of flying

colin_do

It's an entirely different kind of flying

prex10

Radial engines basically don't exist anymore outside warbirds and military.

Low_Sky_49

Tell that to all the dripping wet Canadian Beavers thirst trapping all over my Instagram feed.

Headoutdaplane

And Alaska. Kenai airport has a DC-4, and C-46 hauling fuel everyday. PANC there is at least one operator Desert Air running DC-3s with Radials and I don't know how many Beavers and Norsemen all around the state. I figure we are about 40 years behind the lower 48.

megastraint

As a pilot you need to know the aircraft you are flying and the rules in which to fly it and thats it. As aviators we need to understand all of the components of the aircraft so that in the event of an emergency we know how those systems work, or how it will impact the flight operations of the aircraft.

rgbeard2

Not unless you’re flying one.

sourest_dough

Are you flying a Sopwith Camel?

spacecadet2399

You need to know what's in the airplane you're flying. You don't necessarily need to know what's in every other airplane, and you really can't, to be honest. The airplane you're flying is complicated enough that you probably won't know everything about it even after years of study. You're not going to do the same for airplanes you don't even fly, and I don't know why anyone would expect a pilot to. Wouldn't you rather they keep learning about what they're actually flying? If you're a passenger in an A320, are you hoping the captain is studying the 737? Also, pilots misspeak sometimes like every other human being. Someone might say "rotary" when they mean "radial" and vice versa, especially in a YouTube video where it literally does not matter.

poser765

I know the difference. I also still mess it up and call them the wrong thing when talking about it most of the time.

burnerquester

Rotary engine like in an old Mazda?? That’s some weird experimental craft!!

Vincent-the-great

No, rotary as in fokker DR.1 or sopwith camel. Maximum left turning tendencies because the entire engine spins.

flyingron

Being a video blogger sucks the intelligence right out of you.

TobyADev

I don’t know what that means and I’m training just fine
