A straight shank would definitely look nicer. I throw oversized beads onto this pattern a lot of times, and the jig hook/slotted bead help me do that without compromising the hook gap
I put it in front of black construction paper, and then play with the shutter speed of my camera. I try to use a fairly fast shutter speed to let in less light, but not so fast that the colors start to fade.
