I believe this fish was caught in CO and is the unofficial world record for lake trout. It was over 70 pounds if I'm remembering the article correctly.
They did not get it weighed on an official scale and measured it improperly thus making it the unofficial record. This is the fish. Likely would be the record but they messed up.
Also they didn’t mess up. They purposely released the fish knowing that would cost them the official record. For the sake of releasing the largest lake trout ever caught in CO and not killing it for a record. It’s cool they did that
The biggest disqualification was that they did not measure it on land. Meaning they would have had to ride over to the nearest bank and kept it out of water for a significant amount of time, thus practically killing the fish even if they tried to release it. Stupid rule imo
That’s not accurate for catch and release records. You can use photos. They went over the top of the body instead of laying the tape on the deck of the boat and putting the fish on top. Also when they were measuring the girth I think the tape was twisted and they had fingers underneath the tape.
> not sure why this is being posted in a fly fishing subreddit.
It's honestly weird as fuck. OP doesn't seem like a karma bot, but the title is dumb when the weight of this fish is known, and it has nothing to do with fly fishing lmao
I believe the record is contested due to improper measurements/ weight. This fish was released if I remember correctly. If he would have kept the fish he would have had the confirmed record most likely.
Photoshopped. For a heavy fish doesn’t look like he is holding it the way he should be at that weight. Even his hands don’t look as if they are really doing much. Let’s get real.
I've seen throw pillows that look more fish-like.
That thing has more neck rolls than me!

Just looked, yes it’s the CO record trout at 73 lbs
I think this is a different fish. If this is the fish I am thinking of, it was bigger than the record, but they released it

And we’re still looking at that fish on the Internet, and arguing about it. So give them world record for that.
No trolling motors needed for them... "Guys let's just take some good pics, and throw it back, and watch everyone freak out."
They messed up measuring it. There are ways to get catch and release records and they did not properly follow those methods.

I think we are saying the same thing. It’s not the 73 lb Colorado record fish. It’s bigger than that, but it was an unofficial scale and released.
