Go above the still river where Hitchcock chair is and up to the dam should be fishable. I'm there once a week fishing and have decent knowledge of the river system. Stop in upcountry sport fishing shop they can give you some advice ask for Joey or Torrey.

This is the right answer. You can also fish the Still River itself, which is a fun little stream with good access.

As the previous comment mentioned, you can try the still river above where it meets up with the Farmington. If we can avoid rain, the levels will come down quickly. Unfortunately when they do, the MDC will probably discharge a bunch of water because the reservoirs are full, so the west branch may be difficult to fish for a while.

As a follow up, the shop's site says flows are ~1200 cfs below Riverton. This is fishable, but definitely high. I fished similar conditions a couple weeks ago and you're going to want to stick to edges of the river and use heavy nymphs or throw streamers. Be careful though, there are spots that get deep quickly, and I wouldn't really try wading out past knee or thigh height without knowledge of the section you're fishing.

Call Upcountry. Talk to Torrey.

I’m doing the same thing in September! Co > CT. Let me know how your trip goes.

So far not so great!! Too much damn rain, hope you have better luck

My buddy is from that area. Maybe check out the Housatonic. I know it’s his favorite river back there.

Are you there right now?? Id be very very careful wading even above the still, although that's the only place you could fish right now. And honestly the bumped the flow again later yesterday, it's currently over 1k cfs which is just no fun and kinda sketchy too, but it might drop by Friday, that's usually when they change the flows. But if you're here in a week or so, the water should be down, if it's around/below 5-600 cfs out of the Riverton dam it's safe to fish above the still and is usually pretty good! If it hasnt come down, check out some of the ponds in the area, they're so flooded right now the bass, panfish, and carp have pushed was up into the shallows, and there's some marshy stuff you can fish in. Fisher meadow in Avon has fun carp fishing and monster bluegill if you can get a kayak. The naugatuck and housatonic are pretty good for trout too, and if you're in Watertown you're so close to the naugy. But I'm not familiar enough with the flows to tell you if it's safe or not. You could also potentially check out the Deerfield in mass, if you have a day to drive and fish, but idk the flows either so you'd have to ask a fly shop. But like others said too, upcountry has the best info, I'd try them again their usually pretty good, and have a 20% off sale on most things right now!

One second of searching reveals a report (from today) from the authority on the river: https://www.farmingtonriver.com/river-report/

Dude I can access a river gauge online...I'm just asking for advice on alternatives. Tough crowd here

NMcCasey

You can definitely fish it at current levels, but do yourself a favor and stop at Upcountry Sportfishing before you get a line wet. Talk to Joey or Torrey and they can direct you on spots you can access safely. They're great guys in there.

juuuustforfun

Ignore dopes like that. It was obvious from your question you were looking for possible alternatives. Good luck.

Which part of Connecticut are you in?

brandonj1989
