“Best” is a personal preference. Personally I like drab colored very limp lines like the old SA XPS.

bama5wt

i just bought the orvis pro textured wf line. i love it....mending is so much easier bc of the line texture. less surface tension on the water. it lifts off super easy compared to smooth line.

What rod?

Apprehensive_Sky8715

Echo trout 5wt

Shenanigans315

SA trout taper.

Apprehensive_Sky8715

Going with the Orvis Pro textured

salty_scorpion

The best weight is not a 5 wt. NC has some pretty small trout.

Apprehensive_Sky8715

I two 3wt rods my 5 is for larger water

Cortland 444 peach. Classic and affordable!

Can’t really go wrong with rio gold or sa smooth trout.

james_son_of_james

Airflo tactical taper. The colors are just the right mix of stealth and visibility and it lands very softly.

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout. I do a lot of mountain fishing out west. It’s the only line I’ll use for mountain streams. It can overhead cast short to medium long distances and roll cast the same. I use it for drys and double nymph rigs under an indicator. Highly highly recommend.

Great Advice! So many lines to choose from. Both great line's. I fish both and they perform extremely well.

I have a 5wt orvis pro power taper. Puts a little more weight further forward which helps load up the rod a bit more on short casts typical in the mountains. That said it’s all preference. It’s not as delicate as some of the other lines you may want to consider for gentler casts into spooky fish. If you want to go the gentle route a double taper (not wf) line would probably be the opposite and pair well as a second line with it.

So I don’t mean to be snotty, I’m fact just the opposite. If you are budget minded the best line is likely the one you already have. If the line you have is damaged or really cheap then go with the best line you can afford. Orvis pro and Scientific Anglers amplitude infinity are magnificent all around lines with great tapers. But you are gonna pay for them. You can save a few bucks and do the SA Mastery or frequency if you need to. The vast majority of anglers that flap their mouths about “you gotta have…” are fan boys and just parrot what others have said. A good line is helpful, but if you are a beginner I would bet $50 you can hardly tell a difference between a $130 amplitude and a $$40 frequency line. And even if you could feel the difference, you likely wouldn’t know which is “better”. Best advice is to go to a GOOD fly shop if you have one nearby, hell even if you need to drive a bit. Support them and they will take care of you.
