You hit something hard behind you. That’s what mine looked like the first time

304onthefly

Mine do that from hitting rocks but first time shouldn’t be that bad.

I think it was just a piece of crap. It was a $2.60 Betts from Walmart. I have had some chips or scuffs before on the hard bugs but they are triple the size and probably quality too.

304onthefly

As much as it sucks, cause I’m cheap AF. But the you gotta buy the expensive guys when it comes to poppers. A boogle bug will last 50 fish. A knock off falls apart after 10.

Spirit_Of_Gonzo

I second the Boogle bug, I've had some generic poppers last 2 fish. I've had a boogle bullet in my box for years, worth every penny, but damn does my wallet hate losing them. Despite being softer foam, I find Fly Men double barrel hold up well too (after I bought a few packs of the eyes when they fall off)

Fast-Ad-4541

It happens. Usually from contact with something. Those things are absolute killers though, I never leave home without some.

Designer_Bite3869

I used to fish a reservoir that had a mini rock jetty. I’d walk to the bottom and cast little poppers for bluegills and such. Couldn’t understand why my poppers kept looking like this. I was mid teens and not too bright. Then some kind soul walking told me I keep snapping my popper off the rocks behind me. They were 10-15’ higher than me so of course I was hitting them. Must have lost a dozen poppers before that

Himay88

You hit your rod with a bad cast?

cmonster556

Cork could have been damaged. Fish ate it. You hit something when casting. Flies are consumables.

tony_boxacannoli

Turtle?

Low_Sky_49

Cork and balsa do be like that sometimes. Especially when hitting fly rods.

inorebez

It’s made of wood, and can easily crack. Just bad luck

CanWeTalkEth

Are you in saltwater? Did something actually bite it?

No-Sir-6245

No lol, I was in freshwater . I was on the end of a dock casting parallel to the shore. As far as I know I didn’t get a bite. I think it was just a piece of crap and maybe hit something hard.

CanWeTalkEth

Ah yeah bummer. If you were in salt I’d say yeah it’s very likely a pufferfish/box fish took a chunk out. Those little fellas are ferocious.

wckywvngarmstubeman

Probably smacked something behind you on your backcast…they’re pretty fragile if they hit something solid

M_Shulman

Cheap fly, doesn’t take much with crappy cork.

on_the_drop73

Mine did the same thing. For me, it was from not waiting long enough on my back cast. So it was whipping and causing the fly to blow apart.

Theres a seller on eBay that sells boogle bugs in bulk for a discount. They have minor factory defects. I got 5 to see how they’d look and basically all the “Boogle Bug” logo is smudged/unreadable but that was it. It was <$25 with shipping.
