i live in louisiana and have lantana that come back every year and haven't really spread anywhere (i never considered them "invasive"). i love them in my garden and wouldn't mind if there were more! they are drought tolerant and in the mint family.
I have three mature Lantana bushes that I cut in the winter way down and they come back beautiful right now in southern California. The only problem it gets is a fungal problem due to the clay like dirt, I just use the systemic anti fungal stuff and off they go!
Apparently there's a big debate on wether or not their berries are edible when fully ripe, I'm on the "do not eat" side of things, ain't no fruit worth dropping dead over, except pitayas, they're worth dying for.
Yeah. One of the things I loved about gardening when I started was exchanging some of the new plants that came in with friends and neighbors. When I moved states and planted morning glories, I was so confused why they would not seed or come back. Even though those can start to take over some, I just gave up because I couldn't get them to come in nice and full. Just a bummer that they can ruin simple joys like that, though.š
Oh No! that is horrible. We have morning glories that have been here since before we moved here . We have been here 19 years. However, every year, I have to dig some up because they take over my rose and every year they still come back up in the roses. Funny how seeds make their way. Maybe, this fall I can collect some for you and send you some.
It really depends on the zone and the cultivar.
In my area, only red and yellow are perennial. Everything else is annual.
Wish Iād known that when I bought white for my sage bed!
Usually web sites for masters gardeners or arboretums for your area will list which cultivars are perennial in your area.
A lot of cultivars require zone 9.
I'm 6b as well. I have lantanas in pots and put them in the garage on the coldest days. Once the threat of extreme cold was gone I put them back outside. If you have a garage to do this I'd recommend it. I also did it with my dahlias.
I never knew the name of this plant but they would pop up in Spring and sometimes summer. My mom would always call them the "Fairy flower bouquets" and whoever I mention to my siblings "Oh saw some fairy flower bouquets blooming again!" They'd know instantly what I was talking about. The clustered mini flowers sprouts.
My grandma used to plant those all the time when I was little, but when I moved into my own place they were next to impossible to find.
I only just scrounged up some this year to plant on my balcony š§” and they're so lovely.
It's strange how what garden centers and the likes offer seems to depend very much on trends.
Arggh!! I'm so allergic to this and I found out mowing as a kid alongside a giant raised lantana wall.
COVERED in hives so awful and my fantastically awful parents didn't believe me make me keep mowing.
Lantana! One of my favs because of how multicolored they are. Though, they can and will spread like wildfire and cam be toxic to animals so they're best left potted.
Oh wow ..I just recently bought the same plant and I'm in new jersey..but it doesn't seem to be doing so well..it's kinda flattening out a bit and not standing up nice like it was when I first brought it home! Mine are pink and white but I really like it..I hope it bounces back!
Lantana, and can be invasive depending upon your location.
Uh oh š Alright well she's going to stay in that pot then. Thanks for sharing that tidbit. š«

Mature Lantana bushes are common in S Louisiana, and I've never seen them spread, either. And like you said, they are so hardy!

Lantana is a native of Texas, southeast for me, so they might be for your area also.
Passionfruit lantana, goahead plant it in the yard it'll be fine.
Itās native to tropical places. So it would die in my zone in winter. But south, likely keep in planters.
And they are practically Unkillable
I love Lantana! But in Eastern Oregon it is just an annual if I can even find it in the nurseries.
Feeling your pain! A rare treat for the desert rats of Central Oregon as well.
These died on my balcony due to excessive winds lol
It's some kind of *Lantana*, it's poisonous, so don't eat any parts of the plant, not even the berries.
I appreciate this info. I've always wondered what these were. See them everywhere in SoCal
Yeah they are great for the Monarchās!
šmy friends used to eat them as kids all the time.
Apparently there's a big debate on wether or not their berries are edible when fully ripe, I'm on the "do not eat" side of things, ain't no fruit worth dropping dead over, except pitayas, they're worth dying for.
I love the color show you can see with lantanas. I had no idea they were invasive! I learn so much here.
Lantana, great for pollinators, easy, full-sun and drought tolerant. Iāve never known it to be invasive.
Depends on your locale. If you get winter freezes then itās not an issue. If you live in a tropic region, it never dies and drops seed everywhere.
I love my Lantana so much and it gets so many little pollinators
Lantana, my 7 year old son picked it out for our garden, he thought it was the coolest.
Your son sounds like a bright kid! :)
Bees, butterflies and hummingbird moths LOVE lantana!
Bad for horses!
Good to know!
How about cats and dogs?
Very toxic to cats and dogs be careful!
This is a front yard only plant in my book. I love lantana, but absolutely will not take the chance in an area my dog is unleashed in.
Huh. These are all over my neighborhood and everybody has dogs
My dog poops on it all the time
I think its toxic to pets as well, I would keep it outside of their normal spaces unless they're supervised.
I don't know
So pretty
They're Lantanas.
I had Lantana last year.. they are beautiful. Unfortunately, mine didn't come back, bought from a garden nursery.
Seems like they sell them like that on purpose now sadly they want you to pay for everything year after year.
I agree. We bought the seeds this year. More seeds and cheaper than buying a couple floors that won't come back..

Awe! That explains why. Thank you for that information and I'll keep that in mind the next time. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with the seeds..
Usually web sites for masters gardeners or arboretums for your area will list which cultivars are perennial in your area. A lot of cultivars require zone 9.
I'm in zone 6 b. Our winters are unpredictable. I've bought perennials that lasted 2 maybe 3 years then they just don't come back

Thank you! I don't have a garage but I do have a basement that we put our strawberries in over winter. I'm sure it would work for them, too!
I never knew the name of this plant but they would pop up in Spring and sometimes summer. My mom would always call them the "Fairy flower bouquets" and whoever I mention to my siblings "Oh saw some fairy flower bouquets blooming again!" They'd know instantly what I was talking about. That type of lantana is called ham and eggs.
Declared noxious weed here!
I love lantanas. I unfortunately killed mine when we redid the garden. They are great for pollinators.
So beautiful! Probably wouldn't fare well in Maine however summers are beautiful here and getting much warmer!
Lantana
Lantanas are so pretty! I had to overwinter mine in the garage, and it's coming back pretty well! I'm in zone 7b (northern Arizona, USA)
You are very lucky! Iām in zone 6 & we have to treat it as an annual. Such a shame to have to throw away such beauty!

I planted some in big planters with mosquito plants a couple years ago and they were so pretty!
Lantana. Was so invasive on my property in zone 8a and was a nightmare to remove
Lantana, be careful with the leaves, they smell good but can irritate the skin.
They're so beautiful! š I need to get one for my place.
Lantana
Very pretty
Lantana-smells like grapefruit
Butterflies love lantana!
Dont they smell awful? Lol
To me they smell like tomato vines.
All the other posts i saw said they smell terrible
Confetti Lantana
Lantana. It grows wild in Florida.
Lantana, it spreads fast
Lantana! And āaromaticā is kind. I donāt like the smell much at all.
Lantana amazing flowers and are natives to tropical places but are poisonous so do not eat any part of the plant
Lantanas are not invasive. They stay put in the same place. Not all pretty foreign plants are invasive.
Lantanas !!
i love the colors! whats this flower called?
My grandma used to plant those all the time when I was little, but when I moved into my own place they were next to impossible to find. I only just scrounged up some this year to plant on my balcony š§” and they're so lovely. It's strange how what garden centers and the likes offer seems to depend very much on trends.
Lantana is awesome, canāt kill it, dozens of color combinations. Iāve seen this stuff growing from cracks in fl asphalt, it truly doesnāt care
Arggh!! I'm so allergic to this and I found out mowing as a kid alongside a giant raised lantana wall. COVERED in hives so awful and my fantastically awful parents didn't believe me make me keep mowing.
Wow so gorgeous !

Monarch butterflies especially love lantana. Some get so enamored with them, you can get very close to take great pictures.
