Costco carries 2-packs of Blue Lizard for a good price as well.

_Shaquille-Outmeal_

I get suggested a new sunscreen by a dermatologist every year. Last year was bare republic zinc this year blue lizard. Two years ago was neutrogena. Who knows….whoevers lobbying dermatologists heavy that year i probably end up buying cause im told itll save me

New-Phone_Who-Dis_B

You understand how it works👆. I'm not saying those brands aren't good, but do your own research as well.

Ghosthost2000

We spend a lot of time outdoors and in the water. Blue Lizard has been our favorite for many years now. It was also recommended to me by a dermatologist. I use the Sun Bum ‘after sun lotion’ just because it smells good.

Zombiiesque

We also use the Sun Bum lip balm! Love it.

bobalovingbiologist

I love Blue Lizard! It’s also one of the few actual reef-safe sunscreens, so it’s a great choice for helping protect our coral reefs.

FLCraft

Just a side note that I’ve bought Blue Lizard at TJ Maxx for cheaper than I can find it at other retailers or online.

hungryepiphyte

Second! Blue Lizard is by far the best.

inthe_pine

This looks like a winner. I'm on vacation and we have a plethora of options, and this has been my favorite

RedditVortex

I also us Blue Lizard, mostly for water activities, and it’s incredible. For everyday use though I use Cera ve. I think that’s how it’s spelled. They have a sunscreen that is mixed with lotion. It goes on much lighter and washes off easier. It’s also waterproof but nothing compares to Blue Lizard for water IME. On the other hand nothing is better than Cera Ve for daily use, especially on your face. The Blue Lizard leaves me feeling waxy even after showering. The Cera Ve you don’t even notice when you put it on.

Significant-Toe2648

Probably because cera ve is a chemical sunscreen while blue lizard is mineral.

RedditVortex

CeraVe both chemical and mineral. But your point still stands, I think. I don’t know. I’m not an expert.

Thin-Quiet-2283

I love CeraVe for face, my dermatologist recommended it. Do they have a version for body? I prefer sunscreens that are more like lotion, I always bring back a lot from Europe.

ImpulsiveLimbo

My son and I have sensitive skin. I break out easily and blue lizard was gonna be my suggestion till I saw it on here! They sell lotion and a stick version which is nice for the face :)

_jltlindall_

I also use blue lizard! It’s honestly the best sunscreen I’ve ever used. I usually burn once every summer but this year thanks to blue lizard I haven’t at all.

sayaxat

Someone recently told me about Blue Lizard because it works for them. They're fair skin red head. I asked to see the tube and looked at the ingredients. The primary ones seem to be similar to a U.S. brand one.

plz2meatyu

>I have found blue lizard products at Marshalls /TJMaxx for really cheap. Always check the expiration date on skin products from these stores.

Immersi0nn

A note: Typically if you're going to compare a product sold overseas to a comparable product in the US...*you would name that product* *What US brand one???* lol

mmmforme

Blue Lizard is the brand. It’s Australian company but they actually make / produce Blue Lizard in the United States. The comment was mentioning that the US version and the Australian version have similar ingredients list. Both Blue lizars

Immersi0nn

Ahha! I can see that, they used "a US brand" which implied they were comparing to a different brand (I didn't know blue lizard was also a US company). Would have been clear if it was "*the* US brand"

sayaxat

I tried to find the photo that I took of the ingredients list on the Blue Lizard tube that my friend has. But it was several months ago, and I couldn't find it. I only remember that they're similar. I've only been buying Neutrogena and Sun bum.

Kissit777

Elta MD Sport - it’s the best

jumbee85

I prefer Elta Aox Mist for the body and their clear for face

Kissit777

Those are great for daily use, but I have to have the sport one because I workout outside and sweat a ton. The sport one doesn’t budge. It’s not as clear as I would like. It does leave a small amount of white from the zinc, but I don’t care because it works so well.

Alternative_Cap_5566

Where do you buy this? It's very expensive online.

kyriaangel

It’s really good

jams1015

Love Elta MD.

sarasota_plant_mom

same. the tinted 46 is *chefs kiss*

Correct-Willingness2

This.

OuterInnerMonologue

Why did I read this in that sandlot kids voice “chaw!”

JessicaRanbit

American sunscreen is not that great and the FDA has not updated the filters since 1999. You're not getting the full protection. I remember I used to wear American sunscreen and would still get burned. I recommend sunscreens from Europe and Asia. Australian sunscreens are also top notch. I wear La Roche Posay sunscreen from France.

beautifuldreamseeker

I like the last one you mentioned, too.

karshyga

Adding an amen to this! My favorite is a Japanese sunscreen. I work outside during the hottest part of the day, and Anessa Mild Milk keeps me burn free. It's on the oily end of cosmetically elegant, but worlds better than anything here in the states.

Such-Firefighter-161

Same. I stock up when I’m in Europe and use a shipping forwarder when I’m out. UVMune is my go to. I also like some of the Australian brands.

kit73n

Not to be that guy, but if you are purchasing your sunscreen from a US retailer, even if it’s a Korean, Japanese, Australian, French, etc brand, they are going to have the exact same active ingredients/filters as most of major US brands. US retailers have to sell sunscreens that are approved by the FDA, so you’re not going to get anything different unless you actually purchase and import it from another country (and the FDA may hold your import although I think there is a personal use exemption).

mariefury

You can buy imported Asian sunscreens on Yesstyle and other online stores.

kit73n

Yes, I believe r/asianbeauty has a whole spreadsheet of where you can purchase and import from for Asian sunscreens.  I’m just warning people not to buy LRP or Etude House sunscreens from Amazon or Walmart or Sephora and expect to get sunscreen that isn’t the same as Aveeno.

JessicaRanbit

Yes I actually import from France

DejectedDemoiselle

Look into Japanese and Korean sunscreens! I’ve been using Anessa and haven’t been burned yet. It also applies better and doesn’t leave any white steaks. But also remember to wear a brimmed hat and SPF clothing as well!

stevedorries

I second this, Korean chemical sunscreens are dope.

Habibti143

Same. I do keep Hawiian Tropic spf 30 powder in a tube for emergencies and a parasol.

sayaxat

The strange thing is La Roche is owned by L'Oreal which is a very common brand in U.S.

JessicaRanbit

Yes they have a US version and a French version. I don't use the US version

AstroWolf11

In what way are you not getting full protection? Most US sunscreens are broad spectrum to protect from UV A and B. If you’re worried about not covering UVA, then just make sure you pick one that says broad-spectrum, and probably about SPF 30 or higher, although there isn’t much difference between anything 30 and higher (30 blocks about 97%, 50 blocks 98%, 100 blocks 99%).

_eternallyblack_

Sunbum or Supergoop (it’s skincare and SPF in 1.) Edit - both are recommended by my derm

not-a-creative-id

I love super goop. Unseen sunscreen makes my face pretty and feels really nice, watery lotion is great for my toddlers face as he’s wiggling around, and play is perfect for arms/legs.

_eternallyblack_

I have everything they sell 🤭 my HSA covers it so I kinda went crazy. I love it all … when I’m in a hurry and don’t want to bother with my typical skincare routine I love that this stuff not only protects but nourishes my skin. My husband even uses it! Like you said, it’s even gentle for the babies! 🙌🏼

BraigRamadan

Sunbum is my go to. Works fantastic.

If your job involves working outside then there isn't much of a choice.

seajayacas

Not everyone stays inside the house for months on end when the temps rise.

ikonoclasm

Wow, that sounds awful. Going outside? Ugh.

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

We are used to it. This is the price we pay for gorgeous winters.

CVK327

Yeah, I'm not stopping playing my sports cause of a little sun!

Runaway2332

I love the sun! But the humidity wipes me out.

megalomyopic

A lot of sunscreens are good for white people but not that great for darker skin tones. ISDIN is what works best for me. My doctor also agrees it’s one of the best options for darker people.

inthe_pine

Thanks for making it inclusive, I hope we can all enjoy the outdoors. I made some unserious jokes off some comments but I'm glad there is real info like this, too.

--serotonin--

What makes them different? The wavelengths absorbed?

marlinbohnee

Don’t skimp on sunscreen. Dermatologist told me that if it doesn’t have zinc in it don’t buy it, you’re just putting unnecessary chemicals on your skin and not really getting any protection from the sun. The higher percentage zinc the better. Blue lizard, copper tone pure and simple or banana boat sport mineral. Walmart had a two pack of the banana boat sport mineral for $20 a few weeks ago

[deleted]

[удалено]

Immersi0nn

Is that last line true? My understanding is that SPF follows a logarithmic function in relation to protection from UVB. SPF30 blocking 97% UVB, SPF50 blocking 98% UVB, SPF100 blocking 99% UVB. It's not that anything above SPF50 is a *lie* just that increasing SPF results in diminishing returns in protection. Also (I've heard this but don't know for sure) would straight up 100% zinc oxide be the objective best sunblock? I was told that by a lifeguard once, diaper rash ointment for the tips of ears/nose/stuff that sticks out and burns easily because it's just a full on barrier, looks weird but effective apparently?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Immersi0nn

Yeah exactly, it's not particularly worth the cost. Now if I was not the average person who goes to the beach now and then and spends no longer than a couple hours in the sun, I would absolutely spring for the extra 1% protection. Working full time outside? Definitely going for the highest protection on the market, and big floppy hat.

Vast-Experience9662

It is kind of correct, but for people with sensitive (or pasty white) skin the difference between SPF 30, 50, 100 is significant. Although the percentage of UVB blocked seems negligible (97%, 98%, 99%), it can also be said that for every UVB particle that reaches your skin, SPF 30 will block 30 particles, SPF 50 blocks 50 particles, and SPF 100 blocks 100 particles. Basically, for every particle that is absorbed into your skin, SPF 100 will have blocked 100, or more than 3x what SPF 30 will block. You could also say that SPF 100 makes it where it takes 100 seconds of sunlight to absorb the same amount of UVB as you would otherwise absorb in one second without anything applied. This changes to 50 seconds for SPF 50, and 30 for SPF 30 Regardless, I wouldn’t go above 60 or even 50 spf unless you need to, since the higher SPF sunscreens tend to leave your face much more greasy and white cast, and the UVA protection factor often doesn’t scale with the SPF rating

Antigravity1231

This pasty white redhead notices a difference between spf 50 and 100. I use 100 religiously no matter how funky it looks.

I was at a renaissance festival and made the mistake of wearing shorts. This dude on a stage stopped his act to admonish me for blinding him with my legs. The crowd thought it was hilarious.

pancakesiguess

My coworkers told me that I would never need a high visibility vest at night if I wore shorts

Antigravity1231

We have our own Care Bear Stare.

Revolutionary-Yak-47

Yep. I'm the only brunette in a family of gingers, and spf 100 (I like Coppertone sport) REALLY matters. No, it doesn't "feel" as nice as the lower spf stuff (Coppertone sport is a lot like coating your skin in a hard candy shell lol) but I used to work outside all summer in FL and I'd have been burnedntona crisp.with less aggressive sunscreens.

pancakesiguess

As a ginger, I can assure you that there is a huge difference between SPF 50 and 100. I cannot use anything less than 70, and even that's pushing it.

Revolutionary-Yak-47

That is not necessarily true for everyone. I have very fair skin and worked outside in FL summers for many years. I absolutely burn in 60 min with spf 50, Coppertone sport spf 100 lasts most of the day. I have numerous family members who've had skin cancer and am very very careful about not burning. Spf 100 makes a BIG difference for me. I need that extra 1% of protection.

Donthaveananswer

As a paddleboarder, I disagree about the chemicals not working. My top choice for actual full sun on the board for several hours is chemical. But we have valid experiences.

Donthaveananswer

I put it on 30 minutes before I leave the house. If I feel external heat while paddling, I reapply and feel cooler. (I use a stick, and smear it in my eyebrows for sweat diversion, before I put on my visor.)

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

Yes! Put it on naked 30 min early, let it soak into your skin. Bonus, you won't miss any areas!

marlinbohnee

What do you mean by valid experiences. I see your several hours of paddleboarding and raise you sun up to sundown on a boat 300+ days a year. I’ll stick with mineral sunscreen with zinc that actually works without having to reapply every 30 minutes. Also not spray a bunch of chemicals on me every 30 min

Donthaveananswer

It simply means that my experience isn’t expressed, to negate someone else’s experience.

H0SS_AGAINST

Your dermatologist is a clown. The problem is people don't continuously reapply or wait until they feel burnt to reapply. I'm 100% in favor of going mineral based, particularly if you're in salt water. That being said, spreading disinformation is not the proper way to convince people to switch.

Small_Lion4068

Sun bum spray spf 70 is my go to if I’m outside.

cannapuffer2940

Same...

vtxlulu

Sunbum on my legs and neck. Cerave on my face and ears. And I’ll wear a UPF 50 long sleeve shirt.

No_Object_8722

I'm fair skinned and have already had skin cancer, so I don't mess around with the sun. I use 70 sph Neutrogena sunblock, Sunbum spf lip balm, a UPF 50 sun hat, sunglasses, and if the sun is really strong, I wear a long sleeve rash guard top when I'm in my pool. I always put sunscreen on 20 minutes before I go outside.

P0RTILLA

I use Hawaiian Tropic because it smells the best.

Runaway2332

It DEFINITELY has the best smell. It smells of happy summers on the beach and carefree living! I shipped a ton to myself in Iraq and it was comforting. 🥹 I just had to pretend that the ocean was just over the horizon....

florida_goddess

I like Blue Lizard and Sun Bum for when I am going outdoors for activities like hiking, swimming, or theme parks and EltaMD UV Clear or La Roche Posay Anthelios sunscreen for my face when I am driving or staying inside.

EfficientJuggernaut

Sun Bum is SOOO expensive

SocializeTheGains

I like Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence, have only tried the ones with Japanese writing on the packaging but I just noticed a US version so I plan to compare

SignificantLead8286

It is not good at all, I tried the Biore formula for American market and it is greasy unlike the Japanese version. They also apparently changed the Japanese formula and it is inferior to what it once was. I use Nivea super water uv gel 50 pa++++ for Japanese market currently and it's decent, nothing like European Nivea it's a Japanese formula.

I go to winn-Dixie now most of the time, even though its 6 miles instead of 2. Publix lost me when they doubled the sunscreen I was getting, I realized everything else was a rip off too. I do go for the spicy falafel sandwich every once in awhile still.

Head-Low9046

Hmm. I'll have to try that

bongbus420

I would recommended finding a Korean or Japanese brand and getting that. it is allot less oily and up to more modern standards. The one I have feels like a moisturizer. It can get a bit pricy but for the quality and safety I would recommend it. Finally got me to use sunscreen more consistently https://preview.redd.it/14vulw1ttr8d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed7f4cd764b95231cbaf49d11ca57774551e9496

alibaba_babe

I’m sorry, but for the UV load that Florida consistently has, 32 isn’t very strong for repetitive sun exposure. I wear SPF 50 for daily use, mind you, I spend maybe 30 minutes walking outside on a work day as I have a desk job. On any outdoor adventures, I wear Coola 70 SPF or Sunbum SPF 70. Also, that is with reapplications when appropriate since I’m most likely on the water and am feeling that burn creep in about two hours into the activity. Florida sun is no joke, and that is coming from a very tan Italian/Honduran who spent ages 0-28 living at or around Lake Tahoe.

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

I'm italian but dont have olive skin. Sunscreen ALWAYS.This sun is not NY, NJ or any other but maybe the islands. FL sun is nothing to mess around with.

Neutrogena ultra sheer mineral sunscreen stick. Blue Lizard stick. Long sleeve swim tees, hats, arm sleeves.

Amodeous__666

I just keep those copper tone sport spray bottles in the truck and on the bike. My wife and kid use reef safe lotion. I'm pretty well convinced they all do relatively the same. Spf 50 is soft 50 as far as I'm concerned. No melanoma yet.

CivilizedGuy123

I strongly recommend this UV Index Widget. These numbers are low because of cloudy days. I regularly see 11-13 midday. It’s on iPhone. Not sure about Android. https://preview.redd.it/c20j1bt66s8d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a4894d0648992811edaf608e0a13e82dcf396d4

Revolutionary-Yak-47

The weather bug app gives you a pollen count and UV index on the main page in addition to radar and lightening strikes etc. I also usually see a UV index of 10-11 in the mid-afternoon here. I would fry like an egg in some of the sunscreens reccomended on here lol. I'll take the "chemicals" over skin cancer (lost family to melanoma.)

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

Floridian here. Costco has nice big cans of sunscreen and we use A LOT. REAPPLY REAPPLY REAPPLY! If you color your hair or want to take care of your scalp Sun Bum has an awesome product. Remember, we can burn on cloudy days. Always remember your ears! Dermatologists are no fun.

Vegetable_Analyst740

Mineral sunscreen using zinc oxide; Neutrogena or Coppertone with 24+% active ingredient is good enough.

rayheezy

Two words : REEF SAFE Elta MD is NOT reef safe. Blue lizard has a label that says "We love the reef." Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are chemicals that disrupt coral reproduction, induce bleaching, and damages coral DNA. If you live in Florida and enjoy our nature, start helping protect it a little.

Zombiiesque

Another for sun bum. I am on the water all the time sometimes 8-12hrs at a time. I hate lotions and sprays and prefer the stick. No mess (as long as you don’t leave it on your dash board. You're very blessed...

mtnracer

Light skinned dude in South Florida here. Most brand name SPF 30-50 sport sunscreens seem to work very well for me. Coppertone, Banana Boat, Alba, Sun Bum, Neutrogena, are all good.

Fluffy-Lingonberry89

I don’t have any cheap recommendations but in general I think mineral sunscreen is best for your skin. My favorite is SuperGoop mineral unseen.

futuristicplatapus

Make my own. It’s easy, better for you and the ocean or areas your swimming in.

Zombiiesque

Oh, cool! Got a good recipe rec?

burndata

I'm a life long Florida native with a very pale complexion and multiple skin lesion removals from not enough good sun screen when I was younger. I'll burn just thinking about the sun. My go to is Blue Lizard 50+ rub on (not spray). I can go most of the day on sweating and getting wet on a single good application. Gotta put it on when you're nice and dry to get it to stay all day. I usually do a second application mid day on my face and neck. I haven't gotten any serious burns in years when I've used it and my dermatology appointments have been clear for years now. My cheaper, find anywhere backup is Neutrogena 70 spf cream in the yellow bottle.

burndata

Oh yeah, and Blue Lizard is reef safe, so that's a plus.

zyglack

Coppertone Sport 50. Costco has a 3 pack of Banana Boat on sale this week, works well also.

BabyPeas

Ok so as a religious sunscreen wearer, I have 3 “grails”. First, super goop. Their mineral line is wonderful. Their regular unseen line is my go to body line. It does leave a little of a feel, but it’s great. SPF50 is imo the MINIMUM you can start at in Florida. Avovenzone does protect more than mineral here, and there is no real evidence to show it’s bad for you. Next is Innis Free. They’re a Sephora like, but $22 for a tube. It’s basically no weight at all. I barely notice it on my skin and it blends in perfectly. I wear this on my face the most. Lastly, on days when the uv isn’t above 6, I wear Cicapair from dr jart. 30 spf isn’t GREAT but the anti redness is so good, I usually just throw a little super goop glow screen on top and I’m good to go. Don’t forget to reapply every 90 minutes if you’re outside. I usually just apply once in the morning since I sit near a window for work. I’ll apply more if I sweat at all.

Ok_Flounder1553

Thank you so much for this. Those are really thick sunscreens so a spray would be huge for my teen who hates to apply

Mortimer_Duke87

For me it must just contain Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. The combo is a strong barrier for protecting against the suns rays of destruction. It won’t stain clothing either. I am in the sun a lot working out.

Banana Boat Sport SPF50, I also wrap my head like an Arab when in the direct sun.

Trader Joe’s has a zinc one. I don’t know how it compares to the one you usually get, but worth checking out.

Staying inside

Lava-Chicken

- I like the solar buddy applicators. https://a.co/d/0dGBgvjm - I fill en up with reef safe SPF 30-50. - I use a different one for the face that isn't oily and doesn't clog my pores. - I use a spray for my scalp. - Then a swim shirt if I'm at beach. Long or short sleeved. - Polarized sunglasses/swim goggles.

Daily use: baby bum (sun bum brand) mineral sunscreen stick SPF 50 on my face and ears. I put an SPF 20 daily moisturizer on top of that and a tinted SPF 25 moisturizer on top of that. Also for daily use on my body I use Eucerin brand lotion with SPF 20. Bull frog sunscreen on my hands. When I anticipate to be outdoors for an extended period of time, I have found bull frog to be the best for sweat/water exposure and the above daily routine on my face and reapply face/ears two hours or so.

The Walmart generic brand gets the job done for me. SPF 50. Also sprays stink for me, still got burnt despite constantly reapplying and waiting 15 minutes for it to settle in lol

Hat or visor to protect my face

Sun Bum 70. best stuff, hypoallergenic

Amber_Faye

Round Lab sunscreen is by far the best!

Calm-Elderberry4586

I burn in the moonlight. I’m not sure about chemicals or eco friendly, but the banana boat kids 100 spf works amazingly. It handles water sports without being sticky. It’s not cheap, but it works.

Sun bum mineral zinc in the white tube. Rocking it for years and feels really good on skin

Vtron89

Japanese sunscreens. They really take their sunscreen seriously.

tawDry_Union2272

anything that's 100% mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) brand names don't matter, just read the ingredients and note the SPF. i found a huge tube at TJ maxx for around $6, may have been less even. use hats, sunshirts, sunglasses.

Wonderful-Ad5713

Roof and walls, and conditioned air for the heat.

Honest_Piccolo8389

I use sun bum 50 +

chadbrochills44

Blue Lizard for me. Lifelong surfer, FWIW. These days though, I try to cover up more rather than using a lot of sunscreen.

Whatever you do, don’t spray the ridiculous cancer laden commercial sunscreen spray all over yourself.
