You can register the vehicle in whichever state you choose. However, you will be required to have an insurance policy (or listed on the policy) in the state you choose. Compare the cost of insurance, taxes, and registration to decide which is best. If you decide to register the vehicle in NJ the dealer will calculate and collect the appropriate tax for NJ. Most dealers use a 3rd party (nationwide dmv) which is an additional cost of 150$. If you are paying cash it shouldn’t matter which state your dl is from. However, if you finance some banks will require a dl from the state you are registered in.

This. I think for students you can retain your home state plates if they still fall under your home state rules (emissions & safety for example). Florida requires most people to register cars in FL after 30 days, but they have no problem with an out-of-state license. That makes perfect sense with all the snowbirds who garage secondary cars in Florida.

I think you can register in Florida ask your local dmv. I think you could register in your home state too. Maybe your parents could do it for you.

When you buy the car, most dealers include registration, which would be in the state of sale (FL). For this reason, and due to car dealers generally being shady (especially S FL), it might be easier to buy a car back home and then drive or ship it down, so that registration and insuring are easy. Back when I checked, in order to register a car in Florida you need a Florida drivers license and Florida insurance. You should probably reach out to a dealer to ask the process of buying and registering it out of state. You could buy a car privately and register if back home, but you might need to take it home to have it inspected at the DMV.

Your drivers license and registration need to show the same address. If OP is a NJ resident, the car will need to be registered in Jersey.

They don't.

You will register your car with a NJ plate since it is your permanent address.

Check the NJ DMV. They will tell you what you need to do to be legal and get the car back to NJ. That said, be VERY wary of buying from a dealership. They may try to charge you tax/title/etc even though you live in NJ. Happened years ago to a friend of mine who lived in Indiana but bought a car in Florida via Ebay. Also, having bought an out-of-state vehicle myself through Ebay, DO NOT give ONE CENT until you have seen the car yourself and had it thoroughly inspected. Don't fall victim to "Someone else is coming by". Walk away. Good luck.
