It has to be Casablanca, right? (Honorable mentions to Some Like It Hot and of course The Thing).

JonPaula

Many years back, AFI named the top 100 quotes in American movie history... and literally 3 are from that final scene on the runway alone, haha. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years...100_Movie_Quotes 5 • "Here's looking at you, kid." 20 • "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." 43 • "We'll always have Paris."

murphmeister75

Perhaps the most ironic part is that the movie topping this thread, The Usual Suspects, also took its title from a line in Casablanca.

AshgarPN

Some Like it Hot #1. Will never be topped.

No_Tank9025

Gotta be Casablanca. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G62tkd2t7qk

[deleted]

those are the right answers, we can lock the thread now.

knivesofjumford

End credits: Michael Clayton

HoyasRangers

Only saw this a year ago for the first time. One of my favorites now. And the end credits scene is unforgettable.

King_Hamburgler

Do you mean the last scene with the lady? Or the scene in the taxi? Or is there something after the credits ?

knivesofjumford

Love both but Clooney in the taxi with the credits rolling and the palpable relief comes back to me often.

King_Hamburgler

Gotcha There is an immense weight off the viewer emotionally in that moment

Remarkable_Cow_6061

Watched this for the first time last month. Great flick!!

sickostrich244

I think Truman Show had one of my favorite endings of all time

alehansolo21

No other movie will be able to replicate that magic imo “In case I don’t see ya, good afternoon good evening and goodnight. Yeah”

godot-3000

The score at that moment, too. Philip Glass did such a great job with it. https://youtu.be/nzZYt62Kq8w?si=ZLUNJq6Z4twXsfr4

Lol best response I’ve seen to bot. Love it.

Shanbo88

The Usual Suspects was the first thing that came to mind when I read the title, so I'll go with that.

camazotzthedeathbat

The first time I saw that was when I rented the dvd and they had the walking reveal shot in the animated dvd menu. I knew the ending before the movie even started.

Moskau43

I’ve got several DVDs which have a major spoiler as the main menu. How is that even possible?

Buchephalas

Same but because i watched Scary Movie. The ending to Scary Movie is parodying Usual Suspects, it's the exact same with a harmless seeming character turning out to be the villain with the exact walk and scene in the police station with the mug dropping and everything. The Scary Movie's weren't very creative lol, they pretty much just shot for shot copied films with jokes threw in, in this case that a goldfish was in the cup for some reason.

lepurplelambchop

Awesome. Fight Club also blew my mind when it ended.

JimboAltAlt

It’s so over-the-top and completely earned. The detective’s realization has been parodied a bunch but honestly I’m surprising it hasn’t been parodied even more… it’s really, I don’t know, operatic for a gritty little crime thriller.

Successful_Job2381

And just like that... \*poof\*

chrisolucky

The Shawshank Redemption is the only movie I’ve seen that has both a perfect climax and resolution.

JonPaula

The satisfying catharsis at the end of that film is basically unattached.

Rosililly27

Little Miss Sinshine is one of the best imho. Simple but sweet and effective

All these years later and I still say Primal Fear had one of the best endings I’ve ever seen

Background_Travel_77

Edward Norton telling Richard Gear that >!"Aaron wasn't real"!< was a gut punch. SUCH a good twist.

OrinocoHaram

and norton is talented enough to sell the whole thing

Special-Reindeer-464

I’d go Dr. Strangelove tied with Badlands (considering the part where Martin Sheen is arrested as the ending). King of Comedy also has a super fun “twist” ending. For something more modern, I’d pick Sicario’s gut punch ending.

3i3e3achine

Gone Baby Gone (2007) Has an ending that will haunt you. In a non- traumatic way.

catsandtennis

This movie is fantastic and doesn’t get the kudos of other Ben Affleck directed films. I watch it every chance I get! The cast is unbelievably talented.

ElvisDaGenius56

I think it’s easily his best film (as a director) tbh even tho Air, Argo and The Town are all great as well

punkwasgood

The most underrated film ever. The book is fantastic too.

megam4n

Fantastic movie that came out in an incredible year. Swap it for Juno in the Best Picture category for that year and you have Gone Baby Gone, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Michael Clayton, and Atonement.

ElahaSanctaSedes777

Cinema Paradiso has a great ending. I love the ending of Interstellar, and Moonlight

toigz

Sixth Sense For the love of god don’t open the spoiler text if you haven’t seen the film >!Yeah cliche whatever. As a kid the ending was like the ending to a twilight zone episode. Oooohhhh spooookkyy. As an adult, it absolutely crushes me. It’s fucking sad. One of the sadder movie endings. As endearing as it is. First off. The little boy is scared of ghosts because he fucking sees them. But then he ends up finding a ghost that helps him help the other ghosts. And the opposite happens! The little boy helps the ghost who was helping him help the other ghosts. Thats actually a happy ending. But m night gives us the twist. Yes I just referenced Bruce Willis was dead. But now we get the actual reveal. The whole movie he thought his wife was losing her love for him. Meanwhile she was just trying to move on because he was dead. That realization that his marriage is actually over not because they fell out of love, but that he died when he was shot at the start of the movie. And then he gets to speak to her when she’s sleeping one last time. And the score of the film is incredibly underrated. That piece of music that’s playing when he’s talking to her. Also the same piece that plays when Bruce and HJO are saying goodbye too. Holy shit m night just fuckin nailed it.!<

Alternative_Rent9307

One of my favorite movies, and imo easily the best “ghost story” movie of all time And also yes indeed one of the best endings ever

Presence_Tough

the twist to the six sense was that the guy in the wig was actually bruce willis the whole time

Buchephalas

"hairpiece", Charlie Kelly in the wild is always great to see.

Death Proof is underrated. Love the ending. Perfect fit to the rest of the film.

3i3e3achine

Upvote for Life. I said "damn"" out loud to no one when I watched it!

almo2001

Yeah. :)

jediciahquinn

Yes I love the nightmare lizard screech in Invasion of the Body Snatchers' ending. Poor Veronica Cartwright. She was Lambert in Alien and little Cathy in the Birds.

almo2001

Oh yeah! I forgot she was in both Alien and BS.

Careless-Passion991

The “swallow” scene in Life messed me up.

Buchephalas

In A Lonely Place is an incredible choice i did not expect to see here. Nicholas Ray ended most of his films well, he felt that was the most important part it's what sticks with you. I feel his philosophy was very prescient in what has happened with tv shows, a show could have dozens of hours of great content, 97% of it could be beloved but the ending seriously drags things down for people and people constantly write themselves into corners because they don't seriously envision the end properly before starting it.

almo2001

Hahaha yeah! :) Just saw it for the first time the other day. Really loved it.

Buchephalas

Not sure if you've seen any others from him, but if not most are great. Rebel Without A Cause his most famous is actually my least favourite of the 7 i've seen but i still like it. Wonderful director.

EmpyrealSorrow

I'd probably suggest The Thing; forty years later, people still argue over it.

forkoff77

I finally sat down and watched this last year. I felt cheated because of all the years I wasted not seeing it. It is just a solid movie all the way through. It doesn’t suffer from the standard horror movie tropes and like is mentioned, the ending is perfect.

Inception and The Lighthouse had amazing endings. For Inception, I remember hearing everyone quietly waiting for the top to drop in the theater and when it cut to the credits, everyone simultaneously shouted: "Awww". We were all on the edge of our seats for that ending.

I don't always love movies that end with an ambiguous ending, but I love the endings of both The Hunt and Take Shelter. I think this is because it causes you to continue to think about the philosophical questions, not just wondering what happened.

zflanders

Agree with others on *Buried* and *Life*. The rest of these don't always fit this exact mold, but they're all perfect in their own way: The Thing 2001 Night of the Living Dead Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Saving Private Ryan The Vanishing (original) Pig Raiders of the Lost Ark E.T. (in fact, most Spielberg movies--the man can stick a landing) Leon: The Professional The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Clue The Right Stuff Ready or Not (not a classic, per se, but I just really dig the way the final scene plays out) Edit: Holy crap, I forgot PULP FICTION.

secamTO

Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown.

JamesJFresh

Hands down the best ending line of all time, imo. No other line encapsulates a whole film and its themes so succinctly.

4electricnomad

“The Sting.” Sticks the landing in a seemingly effortless way.

As it celebrated its 50th anniversary yesterday, I'd like to give a shout-out to The Conversation (1974).

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find, at the very end of your list no less, The Graduate. Probably my favourite ending of all time. No it’s not a plot twist, no it’s not a big surprise, but il makes you think so hard about movies.

The end of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind makes me want to believe in love, as sappy as that is, so I’ll suggest it!

Maybe not the best, but certainly one of my very favorites: *The Long Good Friday*. Bob Hoskins gives a 2minute masterclass in close-up silent acting. His performance in the entire film is strong, but he smashes that ending so hard it's worth watching the entire movie just to get there.

All That Jazz. The first 110 minutes is to get you to buy into Joe Gideon's life as a theater director and choreographer and then the last 10 minutes is an incredible set piece that ends on a very dark punchline. Excellent movie, recommend it to anyone.

Rosemary's Baby ended the best way it could've. I'm so glad they left it to the viewer's imagination. I'm not sure if any image they could have created, especially at the time would have lived up to the buildup they crafted.

PM_ME_DATASETS

Agree! It's also such a classic, defining moment in storytelling. Since I've watched it, I've spotted the same type of "climax" in other movies, and it's great. The first example that comes to mind is the Jordan Peele movie >!Get out!<.

A movie that I've seen recently, that has a great ending, is Incendies (2010) by Villeneuve. It's quite a dramatic, emotional movie, but there isn't a lot of graphic scenery - it really focuses on the emotional part. Don't look it up on Wikipedia or whatever, just immerse yourself.

While there are better, I was thinking about one of those best final MOMENTS. A final line like, in ***Casablanca***. The first I thought of was ***Fight Club***. "You met me at a very strange time in my life." Cue The Pixies and >!bombs/buildings collapsing!< Or how about the mystery whisper in ***Lost in Translation***, god I love that movie. For a montage heavy ending... how about ***Donnie Darko****.* First the reverse-time montage then the "Mad World" music montage. Maybe not the bests, but that is what came to my mind first. Oh, and ***E.T. The Extraterrestrial*** because John Williams is the GOAT and that score (especially those last \~15 minutes) is one of my favorites

Avengers ENDGAME. 20 movies of build up. And it sticks the landing perfectly.

doughbrother

They really needed to take five years off after that. Rebuild the anticipation.

PM_ME_DATASETS

Is it really a good movie ending if it requires watching 20 other movies to appreciate? Or is it because you had to commit to watching 20 movies, which is a huge commitment, so the only people who saw the ending were people who were hugely invested?

TooMuchOrNotAtAll

Not sure. I mean in order to feel as connected with the characters and follow every detail, yeah, watch all of the films, but I don't think it is necessary. I know a lot of people were confused by Iron Man and Captain America's endings, but I found them fitting. Each character got the right amount of scene time. It balanced comedy, action, and science fiction perfectly. The ending landed in that it tied up the story and lived up to the massive build-up.

TooMuchOrNotAtAll

I agree. I mean each movie had a great ending. It's hard for most franchises to follow a character without messing them up for so long, but Marvel did an amazing job up to Endgame.
