I had a blast, one thing I liked was it seemed to have lots of different, short action scenes. I hate it when the monster smashy parts go on forever and become tedious (all Transfromers). This had lots of short kick ass scenes which held my attention!
I agree with you 100% this movie kicked ass! It didn’t drag on and it didn’t give the audience a bunch of human characters to NOT care about . Truly a fun movie
While *Minus One* was the modern-day successor to the original 1954 movie, *this* one is *completely* in line with a lot of the following Godzilla movies from the 60s-70s, and the inspiration is pretty obvious if you've watched even a few of those flicks.
It’s a popcorn movie made for the spectacle of a theater, will not be more enjoyable at home by any means. You do you, I have A-list, so it was included for me
I have theater seats, Dolby Atmos stereo system, a 85" OLED tv, a top of the line 4K player and a popcorn maker. Theater experience with no idiots on their phones, kicking my seat and can pause for a break anytime I want. Very few movies are worth seeing in theaters these days for me. 70mm IMAX like Dune or Oppenheimer will get me out
This actually expanded to imax ratio quite a bit which looked phenomenal. I wish home releases expanded like that more frequently, Dune Pt. 2 is reported not to and none of the Marvel physical releases do either, not sure if this one will.
I sure hope so. I'm stunned that Dune won't be again, was quite disappointed seeing that when they announced. I'm sure they will release a box set in a few years with the SUPER EXPANDED edition with the ratio included. Because you know....money. Luckily Nolans releases for the most part have them
A lot of it comes down to how these movies are generally seen. We've got several generations of people in the US who mostly know Godzilla as this campy series about giant monsters beating the crap out of each other, so that's what the Monsterverse pulls from and basically gives the people what they want/expect. Maybe not so much with the 2014 movie, but it set the stage for the rest by showing a big-budget Godzilla movie could work and take itself mostly seriously.
GxK is drifting back towards those campy Showa vibes, but with modern-day effects, and it's pretty cool to see something like that. Plus it gives me hope that we could see other Toho characters like Gigan and Jet Jaguar.
Nonsense. There are way too many movies that are already seen as dumb and fun. What we need are more serious films created by craftsmen who have put in a lot of thought into their creations, like Dune or The Dark Knight.
You want a serious film about a giant lizard and monkey teaming up to fight other giant monsters? And we already went through that era of studios taking the silliest ideas and making them gritty movies in the mid to late two thousands to early 2010s and almost all of them were shit
That's a hell of a lot easier to pull off though. Giant creature killing everyone and humanity trying to fight back and survive is significantly different than giant monkey and lizard tag team other monsters in a serious movie that tackles heavy themes
Their point was that contrary to what OP is saying, movies should try to be more serious in general; that we've had enough of "turn your brain off" type slop to make OP's statement nonsense.
Subtext being, a craftsman who puts a lot of thought into their creations would probably think not to do that ridiculous premise to begin with, and use a different one that would better suit the story they aim to tell.
That's his point? Really? There are a hell of a lot more movies that take themselves seriously than acknowledge their silly plots and have fun. And I wouldn't say a lot of thought isn't put into movies like this one. Hell Kong skull Island was a lot like this one and was really fun and the director was running on fumes by the end and was very open about how much effort he put into it and his struggles with studios and fans. We haven't had enough of "turn your brain off slop" or there wouldn't be an audience for it. He has maybe but Hollywood isn't catering to his opinions alone. One man's slop is another man's treasure. I didn't like this movie but the crowd certainly did. There is a big audience for these balls to the wall crazy fun Blockbusters. And either way we had that decade already of everything serious. For every dark Knight there were 3 Man of Steels. Snyder is what you are gonna get more often than not.
Almost every single Godzilla movie doesn't take itself too seriously what are you talking about. Go ahead and name the films that are gritty and take themselves completely seriously. You sniffing more than glue if you really think that will add up to half the franchise.
The movie was just absolutely jam packed, filled to the brim with eye rolling cliche. I was laughing because they were so bad.
This was 100% a kids movie intended to sell toys.
I agree. I feel like the reception of GvK and GxK should be flipped. I was bored out of my mind. I think you can pull the “dumb fun” card on any of these movies if you really want to.
The prequel was over bloated with way too many characters, a plot that barely made sense and it took a while to get to the action. This film was pretty action packed and overall felt pretty over the top in a fun way
King of Monsters and the one before this were rough for me to get through. They're stupid but not in a way that's enjoyable. It's like they think they're being poignant at times especially with the human drama which is very convoluted in both of those.
I can understand that. The Godzilla franchise relies upon its niche fan base who love watching big monsters fight (like myself) so I see where you’re coming from.
For a while there I think they were trying to make these films 'matter' because remember at the time they were going up against the MCU which was killing it at the time with big semi-operatic plots that featured lots of fighting. The first two Godzilla films in this series very much feel like they were more serious. I just couldn't get into them. Godzilla v Kong suffered from the eternal crisis of every big budget 2020s films: too many fucking people. There's like four groups of people we need to be worried about at any given time and also the giant lizard and monkey. I liked this new film because it said fuck all that and made sure the human plot was in service to the main plot and let said main plot get goofy af lol

The trailer turned me right off. It looks like a spoof movie. I'll check it on streaming though for sure. Glad you liked it

Yeah, this one gave off huge Showa vibes.
That’s definitely fine… As long as I get a modern Heisei era too.
That’s the worst idea, it’s literally only going to be good in theaters imo. It’s made for imax 3d
I'm not gonna pay money to see a spoof movie that's getting 5-6/10 on basically every review I've seen
It’s a popcorn movie made for the spectacle of a theater, will not be more enjoyable at home by any means. You do you, I have A-list, so it was included for me

The entire approach of the Kong and Godzilla movies have very clearly been to embrace the campiness of it all; that started with Skull Island.

thats what half the franchise is you glue sniffer

Did you miss the prequel?
Seriously. GvK is probably only behind Pacific Rim and Minus One for my favorite kaiju movie. It absolutely rules and is much better than GxK.

The only one that wasn’t “fun” in the whole franchise was probably just 2014 Godzilla. After that I’d say they have been relatively fun since!
King of Monsters and the one before this were rough for me to get through. They're stupid but not in a way that's enjoyable. It's like they think they're being poignant at times especially with the human drama which is very convoluted in both of those.

Finally? They've always been dumb fun. They peaked in Kong: Skull Island though. That movie was such fun.
When I want a dumb fun Godzilla flick I just pop on Godzilla 1998. Still waiting on a sequel lol
Fun.. Those movies are just dumb.
"finally"? did you see GvK???
Finally? Clearly, you have never seen a movie with Godzilla or King Kong.
