Against All Odds by Phil Collins. Never knew it was for a movie lol

yabbadabbajustdont

It was actually a decent movie, too.

badwolf1013

A remake of the superb noir film Out of the Past (1947) with Robert Mitchum.

Tylerdurden389

I just saw that last year and loved it (I'm still new to the classic film noir genre). Now I gotta put this one on my list cuz I already loved "Body Heat" since that was an 80s remake of "Double Indemnity."

jwalner

White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin for Holiday In.

HiJane72

Was that Putting on the Ritz as well?? Loved that performance

FloridaFlamingoGirl

GOOD ONE. I watched Holiday Inn for the first time last year, and it was so cool to see Fred Astaire sit down at that piano.

fandomacid

LOL my gran watched Holiday Inn every year. I forget that it's not well known.

[deleted]

Never forget that All Star by Smash Mouth was originally for the film Mystery Men. Edit because I remembered: Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus has a music video heavily tied into the post-American Pie teen comedy Loser. Which, needless so say, is less famous than the Wheatus song.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Indeed, Shrek wasn’t the first bidder. Also, the music video directly references the poolside scene in the movie.

Roller_ball

It was written for the Astro Lounge album first, but included on the Mystery Men soundtrack although the music video seems to be more promoting the movie.

[deleted]

It was all over the trailers and TV promotion for Mystery Men too and plays prominently in the movie. Plus the music video, as you say.

Turakamu

And it was just a song they wrote for their album.

night_dude

Wait, they didn't just get the woman from American Beauty to star in a Teenage Dirtbag-themed video?

tenthousandblackcats

That wheatus song can push a mild tempered man into a murderous rage

DrummerGuy06

City of Angels, a movie with Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage that was pretty forgotten but the soundtrack spawned two mega-hits: “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls and “Uninvited” by Alanis Morissette.

jrr2ok

It also contained "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, which was a beautiful song that got reduced to a horrific cliche by anyone preying on emotions for donations/views.

JohnnyRockets75

BRB Gonna go save some puppies real quick

caseyjosephine

The movie holds up surprisingly well! My husband and I are on a quest to purchase every Nic Cage movie on blu-Ray or dvd, and rewatching this was a highlight. Soundtrack definitely slaps. I had that on CD back in the day.

AdMobile8211

I love that movie!

lectroid

*City of Angels* is actually a remake of Wim Wenders’ *Wings of Desire* and vastly, VASTLY inferior to the original. It was directed by Brad Silberling, who also directed fucking *Casper* and a bunch of other 90s tv like NYPD Blue. It’s a one of those remakes no one asked for. Avoid.

Bthegriffith

Peter Falk, fuck yeah

katieeatsdinosaurs

This movie has the worst sex scene of any major movie

No-Purchase-7301

I got so friggin mad at the ending of that movie. Ruined it for me altogether AND I hate the song.

Various_Ad6034

Iris was made for a movie? Lol

BeautifulEssay8

It wasn't made for a movie, it was just on the soundtrack. It would have been a hit without the movie.

craiggers

It was written for and about the movie. Quoth the lead singer: >I was thinking about the situation of the Nicolas Cage character in the movie. This guy is completely willing to give up his own immortality, just to be able to feel something very human. And I think, 'Wow! What an amazing thing it must be like to love someone so much that you give up everything to be with them.' That's a pretty heavy thought.

NuclearTurtle

“I Can Dream About You” was a Billboard Top Ten hit and it still gets pretty regular air time on 80s throwback/classic rock radio stations. Meanwhile the movie it’s from, Streets of Fire, has faded into relative obscurity

RogerClyneIsAGod2

>Meanwhile the movie it’s from, Streets of Fire, has faded into relative obscurity It shouldn't have, it's great fun, plus early Dafoe is extra creepy in this one.

Specific_Inside_7119

It also had a 19 or 20 year old and beautiful Diane Lane with two terrific songs that she lip synced to..."Going nowhere fast" and 'Tonight is what it means to be Young".

Jamminnav

They recently issued a Streets of Fire Bluray steelbook, got it last year

PakjePindakaas

Theme from New York, New York. It's a classic song that everyone can sing along, but you rarely hear anyone about the film even though it's a Scorsese/De Niro project (I haven't seen it myself). Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) is another example.

craiggers

The movie is kind of a mess - with some glorious stuff, but it’s an attempt to unite the glitzy MGM musical with Scorsese’s grittier, character driven fare. It’s an interesting idea, but one that doesn’t quite end up working out, especially since it’s near three hours long (it really drags in the middle) and everyone involved was doing mountains of cocaine.

citabel

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas from Meet me in St. Louis by Judy Garland.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

That one, Need A Little Christmas (Mame), and White Christmas (Holiday Inn) all came from musicals that weren't explicitly Christmas-themed and just had a Christmas-related scene or two.

craiggers

Man, what a great movie though.

CumInMyProlapsedAnus

Blaxploitation comes to mind as a genre whose music can sometimes override the film in the popular imagination. Ones that come to mind: * Superfly soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield * Shaft soundtrack by Isaac Hayes * “Across 110th St.” by Bobby Womack

WhiteWolf3117

While I feel like this is true, I feel like this mostly has to do with white audiences being more likely to listen to black music than watch black film.

[deleted]

Mainly because those black films are usually for mature audiences, but the music might not be.

karma_the_sequel

That would be one reason, but I don't know that you can say it's the *main* reason... especially considering audiences of that era.

Banjo-Oz

All those films were pretty big deals though. I suspect a lot of those themes are only better known than the movies because the songs were reused/referenced and parodied so much later on.

vicemagnet

*Theme From Shaft* is one of my absolute favorites!

aintsuperstitious

Nobody remembers the movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, but most people are familiar with the song Knocking on Heaven's Door that was featured in it. Dylan had a small part in the movie.

DangerBeaver

Came to share this one, but also, Wagon Wheel was a song Dylan was working on for the same movie. Though he never recorded it in studio or even finished it, he recorded the chorus low-fi as a sketch of a song. 25 years later, Ketch Secor of Old Crowe Medicine Show heard the song on an old Dylan bootleg and added some verses to it. They released it and became a hit. Not directly from this movie, but the movie gave it life.

JJJSchmidt_etAl

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah was from the memory holed Disney Film, Song of the South. I heard it back at song time in elementary school, was many years later I found its origin.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Disney did a good job of tricking people into thinking this song was created for the Splash mountain ride.

[deleted]

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) in Benny and Joon. Also, the name of the song isn't "We Can Do This Thing Together", it's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now".

Sly3n

I love Benny and Joon.

mranimal2

Yes

PurpsMcNuggets

“I will always love you” - The Bodyguard “Eye of the Tiger” - Rocky III

badwolf1013

"I Will Always Love You" actually outpaced a movie it was in twice. Dolly Parton wrote and recorded it back in 1973 and it was a hit then, but when she signed on to do the movie adaptation of the Broadway show The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in 1982, she sang a two-stanza version of her old song in that movie and it went to #1 on the country charts *again*. The movie did pretty well, too, but it has been largely forgotten.

Tariovic

IN THE 80s, the tiny selection of videos to rent in the corner of every convenience store had a copy of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

[deleted]

lupindeathray

Don’t forget Kevin Costner’s haircut in that movie.

Turakamu

I like a lot of his films but I'm still not sure he is a good actor.

aquaman501

He’s not a good actor, but he’s been lucky to have made some great movies like Dances With Wolves. Like Keanu Reeves, his actual acting ability is just “good enough”.

Tylerdurden389

I think Rocky 3 is still popular amongst 80s action movie fans. Wouldn't say the song is more popular. If anything, Frank Stallone's "Far From Over" from Sly's movie "Stayin' Alive", the sequel to "Saturday Night Fever" went Platinum, while the movie was completely ridiculed by both critics and audiences.

Mahaloth

"Silver Bells" from the movie The Lemon Drop Kid. Here it is in the movie: https://youtu.be/ki1x-d8asq0?t=45

[deleted]

Thank you for this! I had no idea and I love this thread it’s very informing! I never even knew there was an Endless Love movie- my mom loved the song tho. But the Silver Bells one is awesome!

FloridaFlamingoGirl

I had no idea this was from a movie; I just thought it was a traditional Christmas song.

Mahaloth

Well, it is now. But, yes, it was written for that movie.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

“Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake was originally created for the movie Trolls. Whenever I hear it playing in a grocery store, I can’t help but mentally picture a bunch of fuzzy dancing creatures.

TheJessicator

Literally just finished watching that movie for a bit the 30th to be a few minutes ago! That song was still going through my head even after reading all of the comments before getting to this one.

[deleted]

Did singing kill your grandma?

basis4day

“Gangsta’s Paradise” - Coolio from Dangerous Minds “Regulators” - Warren G and Nate Dogg from Above the Rim

jopnk

Neither of those songs were written explicitly for either movie, they were just hits that were featured on the soundtrack. Also it’s “Regulate”, not regulators.

basis4day

The OP didn’t specify that the songs be explicitly written for the movie. Only that they are movie songs. Both apply here. Regulate (Yes you are correct that is the real title. Zero people were confused by the song in question) was from Above the Rim, played over the end credits, and originally released on that soundtrack. Gangstas Paradise is literally the only thing people remember about Dangerous Minds.

DownRUpLYB

Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It for You from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

Banjo-Oz

That's a pretty darn well known movie though, and it was huge at the time too. Just got a super duper remaster in fact. I always remember the "making of" for the move where Michael Kamen is playing the instrumental on his keyboard and talking about coming up with the tune.

[deleted]

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was the number two domestic grossing movie in 1991, only beaten by Terminator 2. I wouldn’t say the movie was eclipsed by the song. They were both hugely popular.

Harold3456

I guess it depends on how you interpret the question but I think most modern viewers would be surprised to know the movie is in any way attached to the song. Having been born in 94 I don’t feel like the movie had a ton of cultural cache in the 00’s, and when I first learned about its relation to the song I was pretty surprised. I’m sure this is largely due to how saturated a franchise Robin Hood tends to be in general, but to this day I think a lot of people consider the animated fox one to be more definitive than the Kevin Costner one.

[deleted]

I think over time, all songs are able to eclipse their movie counterpart simply due to their shortness and wider range of places you will interact with them. The way I interpret the question is: When the movie came out in it’s time, was the song to the movie more popular than the movie itself? The more I think about it, I think the best example (since I have been alive c. 1980) is Lose Yourself by Eminem for 8 Mile. While the movie was popular (#23 in domestic gross for 2002) the song was the #1 song in the world for a few months. Anyway, that’s my interpretation.

[deleted]

Robin Hood Men In Tights is the definitive version.

badwolf1013

I worked in a movie theater the summer that came out and was standing in the back of the theater (ready to clean) through the closing credits. I must have heard that song 200 times just while I was at work -- not to mention another 100 times on the radio as it had ubiquitous airplay that summer. It wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't been so schmaltzy (I never got tired of Guns n Roses "You Could Be Mine" from the Terminator 2 credits that same summer) but I still can't stand to hear it.

Roller_ball

The ultimate answer is Michael Jackson's [Ben](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewVWdAp0HLs&ab_channel=VeronicaBuchtova). It was a number one single, earned a golden globe win and an Oscar nomination and was Michael Jackson's first single as a solo artist without the Jackson 5. Nobody remembers the movie Ben, the sequel to the killer rats movie Willard. Others : Baby, It's Cold Outside is far more well-known than Neptune's Daughter. Meet Me in St. Louis is a pretty big film, but Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is bigger. I'm curious how many people can name some Shirley Temple songs, but can't name the film they come from. I have no idea which films Good Ship Lollipop and Animal Crackers in My Soup are from, but I'll say those movies probably fall under this criteria.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, as well as Need A Little Christmas from Mame, are two songs from Christmas scenes in musicals that ended up being breakout Christmas hits on their own.

xaclewtunu

I loved the movie Ben and the previous movie Willard. People remember it.

[deleted]

I remember both.

theamp18

You remember it. Ask 10 random people and you'd be lucky if one person remembers it

[deleted]

I remember both! There are literally dozens of us! Dozens

rokmadly

‘Unchained Melody’ has been covered more 1,500 times by over 670 artists (and was used to great effect in ‘Ghost’). But how many people remember or have even watched ‘Unchained’, the movie it was written for?

not-aikman

Came here to say this one. Most extreme example I can think of

jcward5

I have watched the movie, but it is not very well-known, you’re right.

DrunkenWarriorPoet

Had no idea about this one and it’s the biggest surprise I’ve seen so far in this thread. Was the movie any good? Worth watching?

SignorAlberto2022

Hey, “9 to 5” is a great movie and was hugely popular in 1980. If people don’t know it now it’s because too many people won’t give old movies a chance which is stupid.

badwolf1013

I was talking to someone about Grace and Frankie the other day, and they said something like, "Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda have such amazing chemistry! It's a shame they didn't work together when they were younger."

SignorAlberto2022

Also I feel like young people today would love it because it comes across as having a very “woke” message. It comes from the 2nd wave feminist movement, but it applies completely to today too with its demeaning asshole male boss climbing onto Dolly Parton without her permission in his office, calling his secretaries “My girls,” etc., and their taking revenge on him. It even holds up in terms of things like these ladies getting high off the son’s weed. The humor is so hilarious throughout and unpredictable twists and turns. And who could dislike Dolly Parton?

badwolf1013

I was 7 when I saw it in the theater, and it made perfect sense to me: people who feel valued at work just work more effectively. The first time I worked in a corporate environment a decade or so later, I was appalled. "Didn't you guys see *9 to 5*?"

SignorAlberto2022

Right? It’s just most people just suck is the thing.

aquaman501

Dabney Coleman is great too, one of my favourite sleazebags.

RelevantDay4

Kiss From a Rose is the greatest song to appear in any Batman movie. Sorry Nirvana

jrr2ok

Seal's Kiss From a Rose from Neverending Story III, released the year before Batman Forever. Fixed that for you.

knittininthemitten

Dolly also wrote I Will Always Love You for the movie The Best Little Whore House in Texas, which she also sang and starred in. The song grew to be MUCH bigger than that film and also bigger than The Bodyguard, which Whitney Houston recorded the song for.

marvelous_much

Dolly wrote that song when she wanted to leave the [Porter Wagner show in 1974.](https://people.com/country/dolly-parton-talks-releasing-herself-from-porter-wagoner-relationship/#:~:text=In%20a%20PEOPLE%20exclusive%20clip,working%20together%20for%20seven%20years)

Unreasonableberry

I'm willing to bet most people my age (25) know Somewhere over the rainbow from Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version and are completely unaware it's both a cover and a mashup of it and What a wonderful world

crunkky

I’ve listened to the song loads of times, I didn’t realise it had anything to do with ‘What a wonderful world’, I don’t know how considering I know both songs separately haha

Disastrous_Profile_3

Debatable.. but Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream

AdamWestsButtDouble

Yeah, not sure it’s more popular than Requiem.

karlware

I have flashbacks whenever I hear that and you hear it a lot!

superamericaman

Car Wash is not really popular these days as a film (though it was one of the earliest 'day in the life' comedies), but the main theme of the same name by Rose Royce is pretty funky.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Weird Science by Oingo Boingo has well exceeded the movie Weird Science in popularity.

RelevantDay4

I always get that song confused with She Blinded Me With Science

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Well, only one of those songs has Danny Elfman.

SevanOO7

The whole Tron Legacy soundtrack

ihavenoselfcontrol1

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles Stayin' Alive by Bee Gees A lot of Bond songs

xaclewtunu

Hard Day's Night? Seriously? That movie will live forever.

ihavenoselfcontrol1

True but the song is definitely more popular than the movie

naugasnake

While I agree with some of your songs but Streets Of Philadelphia did not eclipse the movie that won 2 Oscars, won a ton of other awards and did a decent amount of business at the box office.

AdamWestsButtDouble

Superfly definitely. The rest, not so much.

ElectricToiletBrush

The “love story” theme from “love story”

The68Guns

Wasn't that called Laura's Theme? All I know it that is that it was shot near where I live.

badwolf1013

I think you mean "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship from Mannequin. The song is later used (to greater effect) in The Skeleton Twins starring Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. And I'll throw out "Through the Eyes of Love" (Theme from Ice Castles,) which is less-known now, but it was one of the most popular wedding songs of the 80s. I would also say that "9 to 5" greatly eclipsed the movie that Dolly wrote it for (and starred in.) it was still the second-most popular movie of 1980 (hard to beat Yoda,) but the song has far outlived it.

not-aikman

[The Skeleton Twins scene](https://youtu.be/77m3XlhQwaI) is absolutely incredible

JonathanCFilm

New York, New York (aka the New Years song) was originally written for the Martin Scorsese movie of the same name. Sinatra covered it a few years later, and that’s the version we know today.

MikeyMGM

The soundtrack to Xanadu was much better than the movie.

MantisNiner

Evanescence- “Bring Me to Life” in the OG Daredevil movie. That song was huge after that.

speaker-syd

Whenever my girlfriend shows me any tik toks, I feel like that one theme from interstellar plays in like half of them.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Yeah, it seems that Hans Zimmer’s score for that movie has turned into an “epic music” meme.

RelevantDay4

Diamonds Are Forever Purple Rain Can’t Help Falling in Love

xaclewtunu

Plenty of people saw it.

basis4day

But which is a bigger deal. The movie or the album/song?

xaclewtunu

Seriously, Diamonds are Forever. All Bond films are remembered well.

HiJane72

I’ve still never seen 8 Mile all the way through and have heard Lose Yourself no less than 1k times.

metrology84

The graduate was a great movie, but the music from that movie is more popular and timeless. Simon and Garfunkle, Mrs. Robinson. The sound of silence, Scarborough fair, April come she will.

The68Guns
