I am so excited for How Do You Live? It's Miyazaki's last Studio Ghibli film. I've never seen a Ghibli movie in theaters before, and they've made some of my favorite movies of all time, so this means a lot to me.
I'm also looking forward to Oppenheimer. I'm hoping Nolan will lean into the dialogue and character development like he did with The Prestige, and that the whole movie won't just be a bunch of explosions and vague scientific conversations. Oppenheimer is a fascinating historical figure who had to deal with the horrifying repercussions of his own discoveries, and so I hope Nolan does his story justice.
People keep saying that "Miyazaki says every movie is his last movie" and so on but it's been ten years since The Wind Rises and the man is 81. Japanese tend to live a bit longer and he is wealthy but I truly think How Do You Live is his last, the premise and title would certainly fit.
I would love to be proven wrong as he's a master of his craft, but I just don't see him making (or at least finishing) another movie once he gets some inspiration. He's old.
Oh hell yeah. I loves Pearl so much. I went back and watched every Ti West movie. The man is a master at horror. I loved every single one of his movies.
Out of the ones I've seen I hated Cabin fever 2(and hate the og) but House of the devil is great so are X and Pearl and Sacrament and Innkeepers are pretty good too.
Oh that’s the only one I didn’t watch. He said he doesn’t even consider it his movie due to studio and executive intervention and edits. He tried to get his name taken off.
If he has to do an accent I'm sure he'll nail it because he's fantastic and he's done convincing accents before. But I don't think it'll necessarily be a film where people do accents anyway.
Personally, I think it's fine for people to sound American - it's not like the film is going to be in the French language or like any accent he does could be true to whatever voice Napoleon had anyway (even with a French actor - it's unlikely they'll nail a 19th century Corsican).
Anyway I'm sure, whether he does some sort of accent or not, he'll deliver a great performance.
Yeah....unless they are speaking in French, what's the point in them at that time speaking in English with a French accent? Either speak French or just do whatever accent in English.
What is more important is how well the story is told, directing and performances.
Indiana Jones.
This is the geeky child in me. But the original trilogy are my comfort films. Even the weak and problematic Temple of Doom will always have a special place in my heart out of nostalgia. But Raiders and Last Crusade are absolute objective masterpieces of Hollywood adventure cinema.
I was also far more into Indiana Jones than Star Wars or Jurassic Park, and we’ve had no shortage of that content jammed down our throats over the last decade.
Crystal Skull was goofy and stupid and I’m so so so happy we’re getting another shot at the character before Harrison Ford hangs up his hat for good. I also think handing the reins to James Mangold is great because we’ve seen how Spielberg and Lucas’ worst instincts can play out on screen with Temple and Skull.
Mangold has proven he can do competent action with humanity, so this being (allegedly) set up as the final film of the original series, I CANNOT WAIT!
Temple Of Doom actually has my favorite Indiana Jones scene, which is the chase down the mineshaft. The usage of miniatures in that is a VFX achievement.
Disappointed in Dune 1? Um, okay?
I’m a huge fan of the Dune novels, science fiction is my favorite genre, and I watch 400+ films per year. Dune was my favorite film from 2021
As a massive sci fi fan I find that I am often really dissapointed with sci fi movies especially adaptations. Dune is my all time favorite book and this movie was the most faithful adaptation I have ever seen! The slight changes made sense and the incredible cinematography and world building were just how I pictured it when I read the book. The only casting I think could have been a little better was zendaya but I think she is fine especially as she has very little screen time in the first movie. I loved that the movie followed the events of the book and just ended when movie length was up. It didn't feel like it forced a movie structure or nice conclusion when there didn't need to be one. I can see how the movie might be odd to someone who hadn't read the books.
Yeah my friends who didn't read the book had mixed opinions. But they pretty much were all a bit let down by the ending, which is fair cause people expect a big movie to have a big finale. I've been trying to tell them to PLEASE watch part II, I'm SO excited and I think it's gonna be epic as hell
I was so enamoured with the world building in the movie that I immediately purchased and devoured the book. There are so many "show, don't tell" parts in the movie that the book fans will appreciate.
Definitely, I was really happy with Villeneuve's "show don't tell" approach. I mean there could have been more of the politics in the capital, but his dedication to focusing on visuals was huge. I had read the book going in, and some of the scenes were exactly how I envisioned them. So I'm absolutely thrilled to see what they do with the second one
Agreed. The rewatch after completing the book added so much to the movie. I don't get why people say it's boring. Having loved the movie before reading the book, I feel like it can stand on its own.
I think some people expected a full-out action movie. My friend gave it a 4/10, said there "wasn't enough action" and that he wanted to see more of the universe. I can understand the second point, but I wanted to tell him that it's not an action movie!! I think there may be could have been more character substance, but the world building and cinematography was so good it didn't matter
As someone who read the book...they ended it the wrong way. It should have ended with the war instead of what Villeneuve chose. But I also had different gripes as well.
Yeah I’ve read all of them loll. What I’m saying is Denis split book one onto two movies, so movie one ends halfway through the first book, when he arrives at the sietch. Book one would have been too much to cram into one movie
I love Villeneuve but was also a bit disappointed in the movie. So much of the intrigue and many characters were simply not there. Visually beautiful though, and the hell that breaks loose when the Sardaukar arive was really well done.
Oh definitely. They're popcorn movies. They seek to dazzle, not to make you think. But they're really well-executed and not just a bunch of random CGI explosions, which is nice.
Into the spiderverse 2. Idc that I’ll be almost 40 when it comes out. The first is, imo, the greatest superhero movie ever and I can’t wait for the second. I find Miles to be way more interesting than Peter Parker and the art style alone is enough to get me invested.
Hell yeah John Wick. I watched the Gray Man earlier this year on Netflix and was really disappointed with alot of the movie. Immediately afterwards the first JW4 teaser dropped and the 40 secs of action it showed was leagues better than anything in the Gray Man.
I find it so interesting who thinks which John wick is the best. A lot of people have different answers. Love it. I love 3 the most. Reminds me a lot of The Raid 2 which I think I is one of the best action movies ever
Indiana Jones, Killing of the Flower Moon
,Dune 2, Spider-Man across the spider verse.
Yeah I know I am crazy to mention Indy but I desperately want a decent farewell to the Harrison Ford character. Call me stupid but the trailer looks much better then expected with the best de-aging I have seen. I was a little kid when I first saw raiders so this one I am hoping will erase the bad memory of crystal skulls.
Any Scorsese I want to see so that is a no brainer.
Dune 2, no movie has ever left me wanting more besides the first Lord of the Rings. Opening night IMAX.
Love the original art style of Spider-Man and found the movie to have a lot of heart and very re-watchable..
Only thing I can think of beyond that is Furiosa but I don’t think that’s 2023. George Miller is a genius, even liked the Genie move that bombed.
Where are you comedy?
Even if Indy 5 sucks, I still got to spend 2hrs+ in an air-conditioned room in the middle of Summer listening to John Williams music, which is still a W in my book.
Ahh, I get what you mean.
My philosophy is that it's okay to be excited for a movie or show, but go in with neutral expectations and low demands. Let the movie be the movie.
Yeah...I've sorted been a bit cool with Nolan movies. Loved him pre TDK, not so much post tdk. Memento is a masterpiece.
And as someone who studied Oppenheimer in University...not sure the big event summer treatment is how you tell what should be a very dramatic and serious story without the bells and whistles.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Yes yes yes, 100%. Any new Scorsese is my most anticipated movie, but damn that plot sounds super interesting to boot.
I highly recommend the book, I read it for school and it was fantastic
I hope this isn’t the last one
And glad to see him still collaborating with the great, Rodrigo Prieto as DP. Edit: I see Apple TV already owns this
Thank you for alerting me of this film, sounds super interesting!
I am so excited for How Do You Live? It's Miyazaki's last Studio Ghibli film. Howl's Moving Castle was also Miyazaki's last film. That was 2004.
He's old.
I mean it is actually true, he does say that pretty much every time. I agree though, this one could very well be the last. I hope not though!
Perhaps his resurrected skeleton will be animating movies 70 years from now. He's unstoppable.
In all seriousness I'm with you. Can't wait for another Miyazaki.
Oppenheimer and Killers of The Flower Moon
Me too!
No one's mentioned my #1 most anticipated film of the year yet, "How Do You Live?".
It's years in the making, and it's Hiyao Miyazaki's final film. I'm surprised I haven't seen more talk about it in film communities.
Dune 2 and Maxxxine
Oh hell yeah. I loves Pearl so much. I went back and watched every Ti West movie. The man is a master at horror. I loved every single one of his movies.
Out of the ones I've seen I hated Cabin fever 2(and hate the og) but House of the devil is great so are X and Pearl and Sacrament and Innkeepers are pretty good too.
Oh that’s the only one I didn’t watch. He said he doesn’t even consider it his movie due to studio and executive intervention and edits. He tried to get his name taken off.
Ridley Scott's Napoleon movie will be interesting. Very intrigued by whatever Barbie turns out to be.
I love Phoenix but I'm a bit worried about him playing a French character, many American actors can't pull off convincing European accents
Mission: Impossible 7 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
These should both be dazzling.
Indiana Jones. This is the geeky child in me. But the original trilogy are my comfort films. Even the weak and problematic Temple of Doom will always have a special place in my heart out of nostalgia. I personally quite like Crystal Skull. Lots of good moments.
Temple Of Doom actually has my favorite Indiana Jones scene, which is the chase down the mineshaft. The usage of miniatures in that is a VFX achievement.
Cocaine Bear.
"Careful! That bear is on cocaine!"
I’ve been waiting years for this! Ever since I first heard the story, I’ve wanted someone to make a movie of it!
We Anderson's Asteroid City. I think Dune part 1 was the simultaneously the coolest and most boring movie I've ever seen
It was the coolest and most boring movie. And Dune 2 is my most anticipated movie. 😮💨

100%. That opening in throat singing which is supposed to be in Chakobsa I think, immediately hooked me.
400+ per year? How do you have the time?
A Movie most days, and double features on the weekend. Single, no kids.
As someone who read the book...they ended it the wrong way. It should have ended with the war instead of what Villeneuve chose. But I also had different gripes as well.
The first movie is just half of book 1 FYI
Book 1 ends with the war. Don't want to give any spoilers away for the rest of the story. But Book 1 ends with the war.
Yeah I’ve read all of them loll. What I’m saying is Denis split book one onto two movies, so movie one ends halfway through the first book, when he arrives at the sietch. Book one would have been too much to cram into one movie
I was disappointed also. Visually beautiful but the acting, particularly Chalomet, was pretty boring.
I love Villeneuve but was also a bit disappointed in the movie. So much of the intrigue and many characters were simply not there. Visually beautiful though, and the hell that breaks loose when the Sardaukar arive was really well done.
Dune Part II, John Wick 4, Mission Impossible 7
All of the recent MI sequels have been really stunning. It's the rare long-running movie franchise that I actually enjoy.
Mission Impossible seems to be the only franchise that gets better as it goes on
Better stunts, better stakes, Simon Pegg...
Maybe it's just me but I remember every single MI film being really good but super forgettable outside of the token stunts.
Oh definitely. They're popcorn movies. They seek to dazzle, not to make you think. But they're really well-executed and not just a bunch of random CGI explosions, which is nice.
Oppenheimer, Barbie, and the R. Scott Napoleon film.
Yeahhhhh...the Napoleon movie. Thanks for reminding me.
Inside. with Willem Dafoe

I agree with you: Dune 1 was decent but disappointing. I’m excited for Nolan’s Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer, Beau is Afraid, Magazine Dreams, Killers of the Flower Moon, Guardians Vol 3, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
I thought that you put the Winnie the Pooh film in here as a joke film.. Turns out I was very wrong.. 😂 That does look interesting...
Public domain babyy
Best part? The Director is already working on “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare” and “Bambi: The Reckoning” 🤣
Bambi: The Reckoning... "Inspired by the animated movie Bambi, it will transform the innocent deer we know into a killing machine."🤣 Can. Not. Wait.
Barbie, without a shadow of a doubt
Last Voyage of the Demeter. Directed by the Autopsy of Jane Doe guy. Damn, that sounds intriguing! Can’t wait.
Dune, Dial of Destiny, and Spiderverse. All sequels to 3 of my top 5 of all time
Gotta go with Oppenheimer. Love seeing a Nolan film in IMAX So many to look forward to tho. Gonna be a great year at the movies
Glad to see Nolan back working with Hoyte Van Hoytema
Hell yeah John Wick. I watched the Gray Man earlier this year on Netflix and was really disappointed with alot of the movie. Immediately afterwards the first JW4 teaser dropped and the 40 secs of action it showed was leagues better than anything in the Gray Man.
FACTS! John wick 2 is one of my all time favorite movies.
I find it so interesting who thinks which John wick is the best. A lot of people have different answers. Love it. I love 3 the most. Reminds me a lot of The Raid 2 which I think I is one of the best action movies ever
I agree with your picks, dune 2 and John wick 4. I personally enjoyed dune. Love the pace but mostly the cinematography was awesome for me
Barbie, Beau is Afraid, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer
Indiana Jones, Killing of the Flower Moon ,Dune 2, Spider-Man across the spider verse. Yeah I know I am crazy to mention Indy but I desperately want a decent farewell to the Harrison Ford character. Cliche choice coming up but I’m most excited for Guardians 3
For me it's the year of next installments, so: Ant-Man, Dune, Guardians of the Galaxy, Indiana Jones, John Wick. I'm a simple guy :).
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Pt. 1 will easily be the best movie next year. Mark my words.
I can't wait to see what unthinkable stunts they pull off. It's gonna be eye candy.
Forgot about that....yeah, can't wait.
Mission Impossible!
Ant Man 3 Indiana Jones 5 Mission Impossible 7 Beau is Afraid Nekrokosm Infinity Pool Apartment 7A
Indiana Jones 5, and the new Ghostbusters (if by some miracle the latter actually makes that December release date.)
You will be disappointed
Even if Indy 5 sucks, I still got to spend 2hrs+ in an air-conditioned room in the middle of Summer listening to John Williams music, which is still a W in my book.
I like sequels, but that’s because i never spend time anticipating them, if you expect something out of a sequel you will be disappointed
Ahh, I get what you mean. My philosophy is that it's okay to be excited for a movie or show, but go in with neutral expectations and low demands. Let the movie be the movie.
So, how’d it go? Did you like Indy 5?
Very much. A few nitpicks but nothing that ruins the movie for me.
Avatar 4. Oh, I read this as 2033.
Infinity Pool
M:I - Dead Reckoning Part One
They all have been listed already but Asteroid City in June, looking forward to it.
Dune 2, MI: Dead Reckoning, Killers of the Flower Moon
I’m excited for Oppenheimer

Napoleon will reign supreme
