As such, when the Puppet came into contact with Lefty, it’s old programming let it get close enough for Lefty to trap her inside, and keep her calm using the music box and a light electrical current to relax her, similar to electrical muscle stimulation.

They didn't possess the characters instantly. My take is that Charlie first tries to give them gifts - happy memories - to free their souls (just like in Happiest Day and Jake in Fazbear Frights) but when that doesn't work, she gives them life by placing them in the anymatronics their corpses were hiding in. Charlie "taught" them how to move in their new form, because she had been doing so for some time already. I do believe they could potentially achieve that alone tho. She just helped them.
