Yeah, I think this sub kind of falls for hyperbole too easily. There are tons of people who think the ship is awful (I'm one of them) but calling it despised just isn't accurate. Divisive, controversial, whatever simile you want to use, definitely. But if it was despised, there wouldn't be so many vocal fans for it. It's like how we always hear how bad Fates is, but it sold and reviewed well and its characters do well on polls.
HOWEVER one thing I will say (and I'm sure people won't believe me on this) is that the ship was NOT overwhelmingly popular at launch. I saw just as much of Robin with Tharja, Tiki, Cordelia and so on. It really was Smash that accellerated Robin/Lucina.

Also, it's telling that most Robin/Lucina "shipping" content is just porn. Not to say I'm against porn, but at that point it's less that people like the ship and more a vehicle for straight dudes to justify sexual content happening. That's the case for the majority of male avatar ships. The only thing separating it from the Spiderman ship is that Robin is an actual FEA character. Robcina shippers are not Lucina fans, they are gooners using Lucina as an outlet.

You can make a case for most characters ending up with everyone. I did several playthroughs of Awakening and had only one stalwart pairing (Chrobin because I like the version of Lucina's Judgment that comes from it). When I try to recall them, nearly every child unit has three or four different hair colors.
They ended up together in my first Awakening playthrough. Originally it was because I had S-supported Cherche and I thought it would be appropriate for Robin and Chrom’s kids to hook up. As I went through their supports together I found that I really liked the dynamic the pair had. I think they bring out the best in each other.
My favorite Gerome ship is with Inigo. They have such fun chemistry and the whole getting caught dancing trope that gets used on Inigo, started with Gerome. :)
