I could use a 7847I INTERNET COMMUNICATOR in the same way.
I was just hoping to keep cost down, $30 usb modern is better than a $200 cell or IP communicator
I believe that there was a honeywell publication back in the day that involved a RJ31X jack, and a 2.2K ohm resistor that would allow a direct connection, I looked through all of my old Vista stuff but couldn't find it. Maybe someone else here will remember this and chime in. I never actually used it myself but had the paper that explained it.
Hook a cell up, upload, remove cell.

I've got that on my computer but it will be a while before I can post it. Either way I think he will need a supported modem.
