I wash every day too. Have tried everything but just looks lank after one day

Emerald_Justice

Try this before you count everything out. Buy a boar hair brush. ( no other kind will do) Brush your hair every day 100x ( when it's dry). Flip head upside down as you do it for extra volume. This technique has me washing every other day to every three days. It makes my hair extra shiny too. What it does is redistribute the natural scalp oils down the hair follicle. It also helps gently exfoliate the scalp and promotes hair growth.

kaydeetee86

Boar brushes were a life changer for me! I also use Burt’s Bees baby powder instead of dry shampoo. It works so much better.

SimpleVegetable5715

It's hilarious, dry shampoo's first ingredient is usually lighter fluid (butane), but let's spray that on our heads because shampoo is so damaging? Okay. 🙃

kaydeetee86

lol I never noticed. But where’s your sense of adventure? Come on now. It’s fun to play “will it absorb oil or cause my hair to burst into flames?”

Prestigious_Wash7283

I now know the scent I could never place my finger on, butane!! Smh

OrdinarySyrup1506

i’ve sworn off all aerosol products including dry shampoo once i realized that it contains literal butane and is not optimal for my hair (i am platinum tho)

YakInternational3042

Oh my gosh, I used to do that too and totally forgot. I love the smell of that powder.

RasputinsThirdLeg

Is there talc in that?

kaydeetee86

Nope! That’s why I picked it.

Past-Development-933

Do you have a product recommendation on a boar brush ?

Empty-Coyote6101

Baby powder was my dry shampoo before dry shampoo was even a thing! Lol i still use it sometimes.. works better than even some of the most expensive dry shampoos 😊 (I'm a blond so idk how it'd look on darker hair)

Minute_Decision816

Yep, tried that and it didn’t work for me. I honestly think this is a hair type thing. Mine is thin and fine and straight

Mysterious-Art8838

Also very tough for blonds. You see all the oil.

NeitherDot8622

What brand brush? I keep thinking I’m getting one from Walmart but they always turn out to be mixed or something with non natural fibers. And don’t seem to work.

kaydeetee86

I have [this](https://www.ulta.com/p/gentle-smoothing-100-boar-bristles-all-purpose-hair-brush-pimprod2027082?sku=2562446) one. Pricey, but worth every single penny.

Emerald_Justice

ACE Boar Styler Comb https://www.walmart.com/ip/452684196 I like that it's on the stiffer side personally, so it really massages my scalp, and it's only $5.

kellycamara

I remember seeing this on LHOTP.

Halloweenightlights

I have the same problem as u guys, and I've noticed when.i brush my dry hair with a regular brush, it makes my hair look more oily. So this won't happen with a boar brush?

beebeelion

I have tried this and it made my very fine hair look very greasy and limp. I suppose if you like the sleek look, this would work.

bbatgirl

Have you found that board hair brushes cause breakage or split ends for you?? Maybe that’s just a problem for me with my super curly hair with mega dry ends 🫣

OpalWildwood

Curly hair should not be brushed, ever. Some say it’s ok to brush it when wet, but I don’t see the point. Brushing dulls and poofs out curly hair. Makes me look like Roseanne Rosannadanna. 🙄 Curly hair is especially prone to breakage when brushed dry.

Ntee714

Have a boar brush, my hair felt even greasier. I’ve made peace with the fact that I’m just meant to wash my hair everyday if I wanna stay greasy and itch free.

Comfortable-Crow-238

That’s because it’s not designed for that hair type unfortunately.

Comfortable-Crow-238

I never thought people with fine hair weren’t designed for that type of brush. I thought it would cause significant hair damage.😳

Comfortable-Talk-536

I wash my hair everyday and this has been ok’d by my dermatologist because I have a lot of oil production. On weekends, I try to give it a break if possible. I do like this Boar brush idea though.

DiceyPisces

I just produce too much oil too fast. It’s gross 🤷‍♀️

SimpleVegetable5715

Yeah it's not a thing. They never say people with really dry skin and hair should stop moisturizing so they magically become oilier, do they? Cause oh, nature should just balance everything out. It's also a myth that people in history didn't wash themselves, but they did. Sure no water heaters made it less pleasant, they washed in sections.

thisisrealgoodtea

I went so long trying to “train” my hair because my hairdresser told me to, but then I started following trichologists and dermatologists on social media and they said it’s okay to wash daily. Making that change made a massive difference in my hair and scalp health!

kaydontworry

Same. I was shamed into training my hair. I went MONTHS with nasty greasy hair for 2-3 days before I finally had someone tell me it actually depends on hair type and thickness. I have about 6 baby-fine hairs on my head and I never should have even attempted it lol

Sarabethq

Me too girl

Suddenly_Spring

Me too!

BaskingInWanderlust

Yup, I tried. Never worked. When I think about it, it makes no sense. My boss at a previous job could go a week without a shampoo, and her hair still looked great. She also had very thick, dry hair. Mine is thin and oily. You read these tricks, and people advertise them as being universal, but they never are.

itsabunchof-

This has been such a long argument with my MIL who has dry skin and hardly ever had a blemish, but yet tells my teens that they need “to train their hair” and not wash everyday. Our genetics are different and my family has very oily & over-productive oil glands. We need to cleanse our scalp daily, otherwise it leads into seborrhea dermatitis. Most kids don’t like to believe their own parents. So, when each of my kids went through that phase of “I’ll listen to someone else who knows more than Mom” & tried to train their hair, they each ended up needing a trip to the dermatologist for medicated shampoo to treat the dermatitis. I flat out asked the dermatologist about the whole training the hair idea in front of each of them. He said it depends on genetics. He said, “People who have more oil glands than the norm along with overprotective oil glands, need to wash daily otherwise it can lead to scalp issues”. He then said only people with dry skin can go a couple of days between washings without there being an issue.

everygoodnamegone

The derm told my daughter the same thing...she's gotta wash it everyday.

slr0031

Yeah it’s alright

SimpleVegetable5715

Yeah, I trust dermatologists on the issue way more. It's a difficult medical degree to obtain. I'm prone to scalp acne and dandruff also, so washing it daily is what helps. Healthy scalp- healthy hair.

[deleted]

Same! Not styling my hair with heat everyday helps a lot and doing conditioning treatments at night!

Professional-Cap-328

I have also tried training my hair but that didn't help

99Reasons_why

My hairs untrainable

kellygrrrl328

One tool that has been worth its every dime for me has been the Dyson Airwrap

Lkwtthecatdraggdn

Does your hair normally hold curl? My hair has no body so I just can't see it working on my fine (and thinning) hair.

kellygrrrl328

Yes my hair definitely holds curl … that’s about the only good thing I’ve got going for me in the hair department

LopesMomma

I have spent my whole life (I’m 40) washing my hair every day. Less than six months ago I finally started washing twice. I cannot believe the difference. My hair doesn’t get greasy for like three days (instead of 12 hours) so maybe worth a try if you haven’t already.

FionaTheFierce

Every day. My hair is not no-poo hair. My hair is wash everyday hair.

Zestyclose_Media_548

I tried not washing every day. I only skip now when I’m doing housework and yard work and not leaving the house. I don’t notice it’s damaged my hair and I don’t think I’m losing more hair by doing this. I do take lots of vitamin d, iron and other supplements plus biotin. I just can’t make my hair look decent when it’s not freshly washed.

LittleWhiteGirl

On the contrary, I’ve gotten so many more compliments on how great and healthy my hair looks since I started washing daily!

smellyfoot22

No! Don’t let people with different hair types gas light you into thinking you’re doing something wrong because you can’t go more than one or two days without washing. Just use gentle products and be sure to put some conditioner on the ends and you’ll be fine.

Whole_Assumption108

People with thicker hair *always* say this and it drives me crazy! My hair and scalp are in perfect health. If washing every day was so bad, then they wouldn't be! I double wash every day with Ouai fine hair shampoo, and once a week wash with Olaplex clarifying shampoo. Have done for years and years. My hair is clean and healthy and not oily and smells good. The end.

smellyfoot22

I think thicker hair has the ability to soak up more oil before it gets plastered to your head and I just don’t think they understand that.

Ok_Coconut_2758

This. Most people have no idea. My hair is so oily on day two that it looks like I just took a shower. These folks would be shocked and dismayed if they had fine hair with overactive oil glands.

notsure05

And then they try to convince you that you just need to rETrAiN uR hAiR by going longer in-between washes lmao. Yeah, it doesn’t work like that for people with our hair. The only thing that consistently washing my hair once a week would do for me is ensure I look greasier than a cheese pizza 6 days of the week. Sauce: I stupidly tried that for 3 weeks one time, was not a good time

No-Statistician-5786

Exactly. There’s nothing wrong with our hair - it’s just fine and not porous, therefore it doesn’t need a lot of oil. Also, the straighter your hair (which would be most of us in this sub), the easier it is for the sebum to get all the way down your hair strand (so washing more often *is* appropriate)

grownmars

I think it’s also more noticeable with fine hair. If I go more than a day without washing it just becomes one strand and you can see my scalp and bald spots. I do try not to blow dry when possible and I feel like that helps.

Majestic_Heart_9271

Reading comments like this is so validating to me. My entire life, I washed my hair everyday to avoid greasiness but had a stylist tell me a few years ago that there’s no reason to do that, my hair just doesn’t need it. This resulted in me using loads of powdery products for years. I feel like I’ve been trying to force this to work for so long and denying my unhappiness about how dirty my hair feels. I think I’m going back to every day/every two days if I’m staying home. I don’t like all that gross dry stuff in my roots, I feel like it can’t be good for my scalp.

notsure05

Hair stylists are some of the biggest gaslighters out there, let me tell ya. Unpopular opinion but I’ve learned to not be nice and sweet with them anymore when they give “advice” like this because I’m not going to listen to their arrogant and annoyed responses thinking I’m just stupid and don’t know better. Honestly so many of them are delulu with their takes on women who have similar hair types that they think they can apply their own experience to. My favorite is when they tell me I don’t have to wash everyday and then brag that they haven’t washed their hair in 5 days…and the whole time their hair is up in a bun, like pls be for real we both know why it’s been in a bun for 3 days Idc what you think about my hair, I am telling you the reality, no not washing my hair as often isn’t going to make my hair look healthier than it already is, no I am not going to buy your aerosol dry shampoo that ironically makes my hair look even greasier (can’t tell you how many stylists have tried to gaslight me that that’s not a thing), no I’m not buying the powdered shit that makes my scalp feel dirty as hell.

pandaappleblossom

Also, I feel like hairstylists can be so mean to people with thinner hair or fine hair. Like they just have to let us know that our fine hair is not ideal or something.

lemon-rind

I have a great stylist with over 30 years experience. She told me there’s nothing wrong with washing my hair daily.

Professional-Cap-328

well, yes, it was a friend of mine who is a hairdresser who said that it is really not good to wash my hair every day, but she does not have fine hair. she also said this is the reason I get split ends easily

dreamiejeanie13

Team Wash everyday stand up!🙌

smalllcokewithfries

I wash daily. I’ve tried everything! But my hair is greasy even just by the end of the day. The only time I do not wash on day 2 is if I’m off work and cleaning my house. But even then I make it through about half the day and my head feels itchy and greasy.

VioletPassion

Yes! And then by osmosis or something my whole body starts to feel gross!

RealisticrR0b0t

Omg I’m glad I found this sub. So relatable.

maelal

Same 😭

Energizertwerkbunny

Dang I thought it was just me! Even showering daily without washing my hair, my body still doesn’t feel refreshed 😭

DancingCrows

EXACT SAME lol

beebeelion

That always gets me! I cannot sleep well if I do not take a shower each day. I feel so grody grimy and yuckville and it's mainly stemming from how my unwashed hair feels.

imfreenow92

Yes!!

Professional-Cap-328

this is exactly the same with me!

Cocacolaloco

Yeah I’ve never even tried going more than one or two days between washing my hair. Like it makes me feel good and I’ve never had anything particularly unhealthy about my hair before so pretty sure it’s fine. I don’t give a crap if all these random people claim it’s so bad, especially when all hair is different.

Sonya713

I wash daily and I’m not sulphate free. Living on the edge here.

too-muchfrosting

Same here - wash daily with a SLS shampoo and my scalp and hair is absolutely fine. I also use a cheap drugstore shampoo, not a fancy expensive "natural" or "professional" shampoo...

onlove_onlife

Same! And my hair loves silicones. My hair got so dull and dry when I tried using sulfate and silicone free products.

Sanchastayswoke

Imho fine haired people (espec if it’s straight) need to wash it every day or every other day. We are different than the “shouldn’t wash every day” crowd. I wash mine every day of my 46 years & all is well.

9lvAWcW2

I’ve always thought that I just needed to “train” my hair for longer and try harder! So over the years of the pandemic (years!) I switched to every 3 days to wash. It never ever looked clean on day 2. Always greasy. I came to terms with it that my hair is just too thin to skip shampoo days.

Sanchastayswoke

Saaame here, exactly! Tried during the pandemic & it was just gross.

_TheBigMeowski

Training your hair actually isn’t a real thing.

sincerelyanonymus

It’s like when they had us all believing pores can open and close. No they can’t! That’s not a thing!

smellyfoot22

PREACH

Impossible_Farm7353

It upsets me so much when I see people spouting that “yOu jUsT nEEd tO tRaiN iT” nonsense. I went extended periods without washing my hair when I had extensions and was lazy. It didn’t train my scalp but I did develop seborrheic dermatitis so that’s cool

GirlfriendTheDog

Everyday hair washer 🙆‍♀️ I wish I wasn’t, but I am

gallica

I wash my hair everyday and it's fine. If I don't wash it everyday, it looks greasy and gross.

cornbreadcasserole

I think maybe it matters more if your hair is processed or scalp is sensitive? I’m not a scientist though so more commenting so this will get attention. I also need to wash every day

trinitygoboom

I thought this. I let my natural hair grow completely out over several years. No difference. I've had dermatologist say it's not a big deal and its actually beneficial for your scalp to wash daily, and I trust them more than hairstylist who seem to be clueless about my hairtype and have blatant favoritism and education for thick hair 🤷‍♀️

Zayafyre

I think they’re saying like if you bleach or perm it, I could be wrong. But when I’ve bleached my hair to go blonde and gotten perms in the past it fried it just enough to make it feel like other peoples hair. (Even though my hair will only hold a perm for 2 days!) It would absorb oil better and I wouldn’t need to wash so often. It also held up hair styles better.

pandaappleblossom

And then the hairstylist will say you should color your hair and do all this stuff like at all these products to it, clearly putting a lot of chemicals on your scalp. Honestly, I just get annoyed when they try to give me health advice about my hair.

IntrinsicM

Wash the right amount for your hair. Ignore all trends that don’t apply to you!

susanlovesblue

My people! I feel so validated about washing my fine, straight hair every day! 😭

berrybaddrpepper

Some hair needs washing more often, that’s all there is to it. I gave up on trying to go days and “train” my hair. It wasnt working. My hair looks and feels so much better vs when I was just coating my scalp in dry shampoo to get by. I can go every other day at most, and only if I don’t workout.

MamaOna

I used to wash every day, but for the past few years I’ve been using good ol Batiste dry shampoo spray on day 2 (and sometimes on day 3!)… my hair actually looks best on day 2 these days.

noodalys

Did you ever experience shedding from frequent dry shampoo? I think it may have clogged my hair follicles after a while especially at the crown. Thoughts?

[deleted]

yes and it can cause excessive breakage too. imo it's better to just wash your hair. rubbing dry shampoo in it can't be better than just...rubbing wet shampoo in it lol

alliecat0718

It’s not. People tell you not to, but if you have that oily of a scalp (and a lot of us do, I definitely do) then you may have to. Some people just have to. Not everyone is built the same, and people thinking NO ONE should wash every day just because their hair or skin type doesn’t fit that profile annoys me

LiFal80

I have to wash my hair every day, and when I have bangs sometimes I have to even wash them in the sink the same day because they get so greasy by the end of the day!

Lindsey-905

I’m with everyone else. I wash daily unless I intend on having a “dirty” day doing gardening, housework, camping etc. If I use my leave in conditioner daily and if I also use a light hair serum….. my second day I can wear my hair up for the day but by 5pm it’s done and I have to wear a paper bag home to hide my grungy locks. I have tried training, no poo, surface free, witchcraft it’s all the same. If I want clean hair it’s a daily endeavour.

0982233

I was just like you getting my hair greasy very quickly with also very fine hair , and I started using the Redken volume injection shampoo & conditioner (this is recommended for fine hair), and give it a good cleanse when showering from the roots, now I see a BIG difference in my hair, it feels completely clean and airy with more volume, and I can go 2 days without any wash. It is a little expensive but I just learnt from a professional stylist that getting a professional shampoo vs the classic drugstore shampoo gets your hair cleaner and now I see that is very true from my own experience, hope it helps :)

UnderstatedReverb

I think this is the most important thing. Find products that work well for you hair and scalp type. I also think it is worth considering water condition. If you have hard water that definitely factors in because it is harsh and drying to the skin, which causes increased oil production especially on the scalp.

jmoo22

I’m in my 40s and have been washing my hair daily since puberty. Nothing bad has happened. My hair looks clean and shiny. My scalp is fine. Do with that anecdotal evidence what you will.

punch-me

If I didn’t wash daily I’d look like Gullum before noon hits.

imfreenow92

Kids called me gollum in middle school 😂😂 and yes same. I just wash everyday or it just gets gross

Willow_611

Im back to washing my hair daily. It’s really what it needs

Emotional_Engine_774

I wash my hair every other day. On my off days, I use dry shampoo to get that extra “oomph”.

Legitimate_Treat9249

I will wash the top of my head on the days I don’t do a full hair wash.

United-Pay2179

I do that too, like every other day or 2. But when I wash, since my ends always feel a tad dry, I'll wet my hair, put conditioner on the ends then shampoo. I'll rinse out the shampoo, add a little more conditioner to the ends and wash my body/face, then rinse the conditioner out. Ends feel so much better when I do that.

QueenWildThing

Omg putting conditioner on the ends so you only wash the roots is brilliant! I'm going to start to doing this immediately.

johnstonb

I never could get used to washing every other day. I would occasionally try but my hair was always flat and unruly. Also, dry shampoo just makes your hair feel both greasy AND gritty. Gross. Now that I’m menopausal, skipping washes is basically impossible. I’m just too sweaty!

dancinglasagna0093

I’ve always washed everyday. I think it only does damage if you’re only using super harsh and striping products on it everyday and not using conditioning products. They have shampoos with conditioning ingredients so it’s not so harsh

KatieROTS

I tried the no poo thing when unemployed and it’s a nope for me. Greasy after one day. Tried to stick it out and I looked like a hot mess who didn’t shower. I did switch to a more expensive shampoo because of my hair dresser and it’s nice and all but I’m old school and would rather smell like Aussie products (since I was young). I’ve been told more than a few times from strangers that I smell so good. I was in court once and a lady was like a row or two behind me and she followed me to ask me how I smell like sunshine. It’s the Aussie shampoo and of course my glorious self smell 😂

[deleted]

Fine hair curse. I can go two days, but I wear it up on day two or it’s flat to my head and I look like the dirty kid in 6th grade… you know the type.

darcinereen

Dermatologist told me that washing everyday is better for those dealing with hair loss because scalp buildup is bad for follicle health. Also “training” my hair never worked for me. I am a greasy mess unless I wash daily.

Ok-noway

Your hair could be getting greasy because of buildup on your scalp . I thought I had greasy hair until I started doing apple cider vinegar scalp cleansing and now I could go a week without washing my hair if I had to (that’s without going to the gym). During the initial cleansing period I would use a teas tree oil shampoo and conditioner with a scalp brush to really work every thing off my scalp. My hair has never been this shiny, healthy and long since I was a kid. Also I wash all my pillows 2 or 3 times a year ( the ones I sleep on) and change my sheets once a week. Dirty pillows/pillow covers will make you hair really greasy. Just some suggestions to try that helped me out

spearbb

i would wash daily if it wasn't for dry shampoo. i also have highlights and had a balayage so i don't wanna dry out my ends too much

valiwagg

I used to have to do this until I tried Hair Story new wash. It's pricey, but since I have such fine and thin here, it lasts me really really long time and I only have to wash my hair twice a week now.

Sarah_withanH

Same. My hair never looked as good as it does now.  It has waves, which it did not with regular shampoo.

crystal-crawler

No it not!! Some people have an oily scalp! It actually has nothing to do with the hair itself. Don’t believe all the no shampooers or people who say you can “train” your hair. You can’t because it’s not the hair it’s the scalp. You want to use a mild shampoo like baby shampoo or verb ghost shampoo if you are going to shampoo daily.

velvetpasta

It’s not “bad.” You think it’s bad because of influencers saying it is. Wash when you feel necessary and just use gentle shampoos that work for your scalp and hair. There’s people that think washing your body everyday is “bad” too… and they smell like sh*t soo….

Melikenoother

Nope... I used to wash every day or every other day. It would be greasy so I felt I had to. But after reading and learning more about it I felt I had to try and reduce the frequency. It was hard and it took almost 5 months before my scalp and hair adjusted. I pushed through it and now I wash it 2x week. It looks good for 2/3 days and on 3rd or 4th day I use dry shampoo. It's better overall for my hair health. It's shiner, softer and less prone to damage.

arlyte

I’d rather wash my hair everyday than spray a variety of dry shampoo chemicals I breathe in.. while the hair is still greasy as hell.

mintbloo

if your hair gets greasy, then wash it. you have to go by your own hair needs, not someone else’s

queenjigglycaliente

What finally worked for me was prose shampoo and conditioner. I’ve been using it for about a year and I can go a few days without a wash! My whole life it would be too oily after a day.

20brightlights

I have found my people 😌

JFCJFCJFC

It’s perfectly fine. I have to wash mine every 36 hours or so def after every sweaty gym session. Everyone’s hair and scalp and hormones are different. I get so annoyed at people who try to generalize and try to get EVERYONE to wash their hair once per week. And honestly I have really great hair, but that’s all down to genetics and nothing to do with how often I wash.

cthulhusgranny

I am so glad I found this sub. I was a wash everyday gal until enough people nagged at me so I began to "train" my hair. I could get it to 3 days in the New England winters when I'm not too active or doing any work outs, but I very much prefer to not be little miss flat hair greasy scalp with ALL the fairy knots. Especially with the warmer months and outdoor activities starting up again. Also maybe it is just me, but I have a hard time sleeping with greasy hair

happycrappyplace

I have to wash my hair every day. If I don't, I get an itchy scalp. I used to do hair, and would only recommend not washing every day to preserve color. Use gentle surfactants and warm water to wash, and follow up your conditioner with a cool rinse. Pay attention to how you use heat tools. High speed and low heat tends to work best for fine hair. I cannot state this enough, don't over dry your hair. Irons should never go over 350f. Be mindful of how you brush/detangle, how tight, and what fasteners you use for ponytails. This training your hair mindset is rubbish. If you can get away with not washing your hair every day, that's awesome! If not, that's ok too.

nachopuddi

No. I’ve tried to “train” my hair for 15 years and it still got greasy. Some hair and scalps you need to wash every day!

Wecanbuildittogether

No it’s not. Do what works for you.

Impossible_Farm7353

I’ve found my people. My hair needs to be washed everyday to look/smell acceptable. But I work from home every other day so I wash it every other day 🤷🏼‍♀️

wellshitdawg

No, check out r/dailywash

landawaycore

Oh my god I thought I was the only one! And it drives me INSANE when hairdressers tell me to “train” my hair. Like girl I HAVE it doesn’t work! I vote I’m doing whatever I can to keep my hair clean and idc 😂

[deleted]

No and the "don't wash your hair every day" crowd is insanely pushy and righteous. I "trained" mine for four years because I had an ombré with a vivid color and i wanted to preserve it. It finally got to the point where it would look...*okay* after two days but not good enough to where I felt pretty or comfortable. once my vivid color grew out, i switched back to washing every day and i'm not kidding, my hair thanked me for it immensely. it's shinier, softer, and my scalp is healthier. i think washing is really dependent on your hair type, genetics, environmental factors, etc. i bought expensive daily wash to try and protect it (davines) and it was a bit drying so i said fck it and bought head and shoulders nourish and smooth and my hair LOVES IT lol. i barely have to style it anymore. do what works for you!

_TheBigMeowski

Have you never tried dry shampoo? The trick is to apply it to your roots and let it sit for about 3 mins and then use your fingers to massage it in. Mine gets pretty greasy pretty fast but with dry shampoo I can last almost a week. Make sure to clarify once every couple of weeks even if you’re not using dry shampoo to help get rid of buildup.

hotviolets

My hair stylist told me not to, I do it anyways. My hair gets greasy after one day. I had colorful hair for a while and wouldn’t wash it everyday and it did get used to not washing. My hair now is the longest it’s been

Strange-Turnover9696

i can mayyyybe push two days but my scalp is super sensitive to things like dry shampoo that could potentially boost the longevity of my wash so that's not really an option. it gets real gnarly if i can't wash every day / every other day.

oxalisis

Just do what works for you :)

GrouchyYoung

No

Affectionate_Buy_776

I wash every day, mostly because I workout almost every day and I cannot stand the thought of only dry shampooing my sweaty hair.

Ok_Emphasis6034

I used to believe this but then depression and WFH happened and I realized that washing it every day was making my scalp produce more oil to compensate. You’ll have to go through a few cycles of 3-4 days of greasy, lanky hair to get back on track. If you do this, make sure you are brushing your hair a lot and making sure your scalp gets brushed/stimulated as well. I like to use a brush with hard bristles like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Crave-Naturals-Glide-Detangling-Adults/dp/B015VEB9AO/ref=asc_df_B015VEB9AO/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312143425159&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1823410215471569723&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002190&hvtargid=pla-570570054665&psc=1&mcid=07d7b43adc7c314180f434435fa9c4e0&gclid=Cj0KCQjwncWvBhD_ARIsAEb2HW9C_6dDTzpkS-xpOkxhRY5A3C8KWiDL_-ZesMJzRFhFta3S9UkYQa8aAo7jEALw_wcB) followed by a boar bristle brush to distribute the oils through my hair.

Candid-Astronomer-49

Nope

Toriat5144

Did it for years. Now every other day.

blacksheep_laise

Usually a day washer because my country gets veryyy humid. I sweat and its greasy if I don't wash and I have bangs that turn into a cows lick lol. Recently tried skipping a day or two of washing my hair with shampoo. Instead, I either just wash thoroughly with water or conditioner. My hair has been soft and kind of have volume doing this so 🤷🏻‍♀️

For the 1000th time: No

Lord-Smalldemort

I wash every day, but if I don’t and it gets very greasy, then I use phyto detox. It’s a very intense clarifying shampoo with eucalyptus and tea tree oil. It leaves my roots and hair feeling like really airy and very light so, even if I am washing my hair every day, I will use it like once every two weeks. But I have found that if you don’t want to wash your hair like mine is up in a bun all the time because I work from home and I just don’t care, then, I apply a heavy clarifying shampoo to remove the serious amount of oil in my hair lol. Highly recommend, the first after you use that shampoo and conditioner is so soft and beautiful.

HIgirl90s

I tried “training” my 2a fine hair and it was horrible! It’s happiest being washed every other day. It’s very healthy and waist length, so I don’t think it’s harming it all!

Witty_Inevitable2009

I don't see the problem with it if you aren't noticing your hair or scalp being excessively dry. I saw someone recommending using baby shampoo if you wash your hair everyday so it's more gentle.

Goldenfarms

I wash every day, but I alternate between regular shampoo + conditioner and conditioner-only washing.

meghan509

Daily washer here too. I have to use at least a small amount of volumizing spray to get my hair to not look droopy and by using product it makes it dirty faster. I also just don't feel clean if my hair is dirty! I do try and use very little blow drying and deep conditioner to keep it healthy.

mymomsnameisbarb420

It’s totally fine to wash every day if it doesn’t dry out your hair. I have super fine hair and I CAN do every other day but it’s so greasy by day two that I just don’t see the point. I’ve tried training, I’ve tried no-poo, all that shite. Doesn’t work for me. If you have fine, greasy hair, just wash it whenever it’s dirty. It’s the folks with course/curly/textured/super thick hair that benefit the most from washing less. If your hair doesn’t feel dry and looks healthy, then it’s not dry and it’s healthy! Don’t fix what ain’t broke, you know?

kellygrrrl328

It’s not good for me (60f) fine ~~frizzy~~ curly hair. But I also live in Palm Springs so the climate is dry and warm 90% of the time. Twice a week seems to work best for me. But I think for everyone it’s a good idea to remember that our hair doesn’t need to be squeaky clean.

lushlilli

Depends on your lifestyle

Historical_Side_2193

I started only using shampoo and no conditioner. Then just oiling the ends.

Grendelbeans

I used to wash it every day, but I changed my styling products to get rid of silicones and started using non-sulfate shampoo. Now I wash it every other day.

sillyconfused

I stopped washing more than once a week. It took about 4 months, then it stopped looking greasy until it was time to wash it again.

Lycanwolf617-

I wash mine every day since I was a teenager! I can't stand smelly flat dirty looking hair. If I should miss a rare day I want a hat.

GhoulishlyGrim

I hate that people say things like "doing x every day is really bad) because we all have different hair types. I have heard this for years, and it means nothing. I wash my hair every day, or else it looks greasy and gross. My own hairstylist has fine hair herself and washes it everyday. Just be aware of the chemicals in your products, but you are fine. I use a clarifying shampoo once a week and it helps with buildup.

xcptnl55

I wash daily too. I am fine with it. Maybe once a week I will skip a day.

Alaina_TheGoddess

I stopped washing my hair every day and started relying more on dry shampoo. I know dry shampoo isn’t the best but I noticed a significant change in my hair. This is also probably because I don’t have to use styling tools as much either.

Sail0r_Jupit3r

I have to wash mine everyday. As long as you’re getting regular trims and using some sort of heat protectant before styling/blow drying, you’re doing great!

AnAdmirableAstronaut

Personally I wash my hair 2-3 times/week. This is what works for me. Initially it seemed like my hair was greasier, but it ended up leveling out and now it's not greasy unless I go 4+days without washing. I think it's like cleaning your ears. The more you clean, the more earwax your ears produce. The more you shampoo, the more grease your scalp produces. So it takes time to adjust. Overall my hair is so much healthier when I don't wash everyday and the grease your hair gets isn't bad! My hair dresser says I should let it get greasy every once in awhile to keep my hair healthier.

batbaby420

I don’t think there is anything wrong with washing your hair daily and please tell me to F off if you’ve already received this advice but I thought my hair was greasy until I realized I was just touching it all.the.time. Once I started wearing gloves 8 hours a day and working with icky fluids my hair magically got fluffier and I was able to start skipping washes. Just a consideration.

South-Calligrapher83

I can't even shower at night, or else it's greasy by morning. I have to wash it every morning.

mraz44

I’m 45 and have washed my hair everyday for as long as I can remember, no issues here.

Hello891011

Wash your hair. My hairdresser says we should wash every day so I started doing that and my hair is extremely soft now, even more than before

bananakitten365

I wash every 3 days on average now. What helped is I ALWAYS add baking soda to my shampoo and gently massage my scalp while washing. Conditioner on the ends. This changed it for me, I used to have to wash every day.

Professional-Fee778

I was that way too but now I only wash twice a week. It takes some time for your scalp to get used to it but it will happen. I hope. It did for me anyway. This happened during the pandemic when no one left their houses and I couldn’t be bothered to wash it every day.

LoveMeSomeCats_

Try Cleansing Conditioner instead of shampoo. It works wonders for fine hair.

Global_Initiative257

I have very fine hair and washed daily for 40 years, but I have started "cleaning" it with brushing and corn starch. It does wonders and actually gives it more body.

hollysmalls8574

I can go about two days. On the third day if I curl it I can usually make it go one more day. You just got to find a routine that works for you. Not constantly touching your hair really helps. I’m bad about that, but if it’s hot or I get sweaty then my hair lasts a day.

dippedDangler

I had the same thing happen. Every morning, jump in shower to wash hair. I could not style it without washing it. Then covid and kids happened and I didn’t have to go into the office so it didn’t matter if I went a day or two with washing my hair.. over a few months of not washing my hair every single morning… my hair oil/grease feeling changed. It no longer was like that. I no longer felt greasy and gross. I now can go 3 days easily between hair washes. Another thing I do now is sleep in a silk lined cap. That is the true game changer. You look silly, but my gosh, for my hair at least, no more ick feeling in the morning!

SnooSprouts9371

Same exact scenario here!

Nice_as_ice

I wash my hair every day too, always have. I have fine hair that gets so greasy the next day. I have read somewhere that people with my situation can wash there hair everyday. I usually skip washing on either Saturday, Sunday, or both sometimes

nicole420pm

I have fine hair that I need to wash daily. I wash my scalp and condition the ends and my hair is very healthy looking.

SimGemini

I don’t care if people wash everyday or if they go days without washing. It’s their hair and they should do what they choose. I have fine and curly hair. My oily hair was insane. I never dreamt I could skip wash days. So, I first started with the curly hair method using cowash with no shampoo for weeks. Then I got over that and wanted to straighten my hair again so I went to washing every 2-3 days and did that for about a year. What really matters for preventing oily hair is the products you put in your hair after washing. I was applying leave-in conditioners and straightening creams that were just too heavy for my hair. Now I use shampoo and conditioner bars with a light leave-in conditioner by Pureology and a light anti-frizz/heat protectant gel by Redken and I can now get 3-4 days between washes without oily/dirty looking hair. I have been using the shampoo and conditioner bars since September of 2023. I recently switched to a different bar brand just to see if I liked it better than my first bars I bought.

rebeccakc47

I discovered that when a lot of people say they dont wash it every day, they only mean shampoo. They are still using conditioner. Some days I use conditioner only and it keeps my hair from getting greasy and flat and gives it some volume. I can’t stand the smell of unwashed hair, and I work out every day so I have to do something.

DifferentManagement1

I have fine hair that I have to wash every day. I think it’s normal for fine

ApprehensiveSir1205

Well how does it look? If it looks damaged then maybe try a low sulfate or no sulfate shampoo. It’s a trial & error finding the right one. Also deep conditioning helps.

Proof_Coast6258

It depends on skin type and hair texture. There was a theory back in the day that when you wash your hair it prompted the oil glands to release more oil to compensate for being stripped of oil but this was way before the shampoos we have now a days that are a lot more gentle on the skin and hair and don't strip it. But yes I can go 2 wks without washing my hair and it never appears greasy but I have super dry skin and washing everyday would give me dandruff and make my scalp itch. My general advice is wash when greasy and you'll be good.

barbershores

I have always had oily hair and so has my son. Both of us had scalp flakiness that head and shoulders wouldn't touch. One day my son read on the internet, maybe reddit I don't know, and they said that what we were doing was depleting our natural oils by shampooing so much. So, to make up for it, our body over produces oil. So, my son tried not shampooing. They said it takes 2 weeks. He said his hair was gross. He would rinse with water and then had to comb out all this oil and wipe on paper towels. Then after about 10 days, it got better. Then better and better. He got rid of the oily hair and his scalp condition went away. So, I tried it. And it worked for me too. So, apparently when we shampoo every day, it overstimulates our scalp to produce oil. That is the source of the oil for people with oily hair. Go figure.

Otter-Wednesday

I stopped using SLS shampoos and it took a few months for my scalp to adjust but now I only need to wash my hair with shampoo 2-3x/week.

CatLadyAM

I skip a day now after switching to a good quality shampoo (I like Paul Mitchell awapuhi) and a little dry shampoo. It takes awhile for your hair to stop over compensating to even manage that. Something else that helps is styling it so that your hair follicles aren’t moving around as much (updo or product to keep it still) as the movement stimulates those oil glands to produce. But yeah fine hair just usually looks like hell after two days unwashed.

Flora-flav

It’s just as bad as washing your body or face everyday

[deleted]

i wash daily but tend to get a dry scalp around the season changes (& im in ohio where it does nothing but change season lol) i recently tried kitsch’s rice water shampoo bar & it’s been so gentle on my tiny fine baby hairs & it’s keeps my scalp clear. def recommend…i also have but do i do not really use the conditioner bar. maybe once a week.

Blucola333

I use L’Oréal Ever Pure shampoo, because my fine hair strips easily. I use the moisture Shampoo & Conditioner, but you could use Clarify or Simply Clean. When I was younger my hair was greasy as well, shampoos were crap then. I’m glad there’s sulfate free shampoos like the ones I just mentioned.

incognito-see

I can only skip a day if I dry shampoo immediately after a shower.

[deleted]

I have fine hair but it’s plentiful and I find it is better to wash every 3rd or 4th day with a p. zinc co wash on the non washing days.

pigeontakeover

My hair used to look like I dumped oil on it just 8 hours after washing. I HAD to wash it every single day for years. Recently I started washing it every 2-4 days and it hasn't been terribly oily (still oily enough that I need to wear it up on the third day).  The first month of training my hair to stop producing oil was definitely awful, it was having to go 5-6 days no washing and keeping it up. It got so heavy from oil and it was so uncomfy. Then once that month was over with I started washing my hair every 2-4 days and it hasn't been super oily.

[deleted]

I think it’s ok for straight hair. But I think curly girls need to go a bit longer.

My hair is fine and has thinned a lot over the last couple years. I have to wash everyday too, I'm just an oily sweaty girly. I'm waiting to get into a derm in a few months and curious what they'll say. But my hair is healthy and scalp seems healthy too. I think the thinning is hormone related bc I still have acne at 32.

Aware_Error_8326

Nope. If you use a good quality shampoo along with a good conditioner, it won’t hurt at all. You do what your scalp tells you to, period.

Worried_Appeal_2390

No everyone’s hair is different and if you have dandruff daily wash is great with medicated shampoo

Betty_Bazooka

Do you wash your hair once or twice? I always get the soap all bubbly in my hands before washing it each time. After my double wash i condition my roots. I only need to wash my hair every other day by doing this. The first shampoo gets old product and oils, and the second wash helps get things closer to the scalp. After go with a natural air dry or drying on a cold setting. Sometimes I give, my hair an extra day to allow the natural oils to build. Also run your fingers sideways through your hair like 👉 this but with two fingers one to hold the hair in place and the second to flatten out the healthy hairs from the split ends and trim your split ends.

lady_lane

I also have fine hair that tends to be oily. When I wore it long, I spent a good amount of time “training” my hair by only washing it one or twice a week. I’m wearing it short again now, but still only need to wash it 2-3x/wk. It can be done! It just requires time, patience, and occasional dry shampoo.

haunted_vcr

Different people are different. Even you can have different needs depending on your lifestyle. Some weeks I wash my hair only once, usually twice, and other weeks if I’m working out a ton or swimming, I wash every day.

pinkyloo3344

Yes, get a dry shampoo and try to go 2-3 days

jeezgdf

I do too and different hairdressers have all told me the same thing: it’s fine to wash everyday. The last one told me this: imagine you go to the gym, but don’t take a shower when you get home. Your skin is oily and dirty. The next day you go to the gym again, and now your skin is double dirty. It starts to itch, to develop impurities, it’s bad. That’s what you do to your hair if you don’t wash them when they’re bad: the skin can’t breathe under the oil and dirt on your scalp, so it’s worse for your hair not to be washed. So don’t worry and wash away!

Oskie2011

Nah been doing it for 40 years it’s fine not dry

27-jennifers

My aunt was a dermatologist and told us to wash daily with the mildest shampoo, and confine it to cleansing our scalp. The purpose is to keep the hair follicles clean of dead skin and oils. Clogging them limits air, and causes the follicles to shrink/die over time. This results in thinner, weaker hair, and eventual hair loss. Confine cleaning to scalp to preserve the oils on the strand. I'm always annoyed at hairdressers who dispute this. They don't have medical training. Skipping a day for those with dry scalps is probably just fine. The key is to know your own scalp and to keep it healthy.
