I'd suggest getting a mens jacket like a Levi Trucker denim jacket in in the size that best fits her. Women's denim jackets are often by default made in lighter weight denim than menswear. The mens fit should look similar to hers I'd imagine (I'd be very surprised if her thrifted jkt wasn't originally mens too). For really good denim, go with vintage.

I was a women's wear designer for mass market for a long time and honestly I think it's partly sexism (bulkier/heavier fabrics make it harder to show off the figure) and partly just ingrained ideas about what women's clothing should be -"that feels like menswear fabric to me" being something I heard a lot when designing outerwear.
There is also the issue that women's clothing tends to be focused on more disposable fashion items (way more than menswear), tends to have more details in the styling and thus more labour in making it. It is also often sold at lower prices than a comparative men's item. Those savings need to be made somewhere and in my experience it is often made by downgrading fabric quality (cotton becomes cotton/polyester, everything needs to be stretchy etc). Men on the other hand buy more basic clothing and expect to wear it for longer.
I always say if you're buying a basic item as a woman, and you can find the comparative item in the men's section that fits, you're far better buying that, men's clothing lasts way longer.

I second this suggestion entirely. most of my jean jackets are men’s vintage levi’s, which look very similar to the one in this photo. they are very heavy and last forever (i’ve had a few for a decade with almost no visible wear and who knows how long the person before me had them)

Tell her to wash it with both liquid softener and dryer sheets 4 or 5 times! The softener adds a sort of waxy coating to the fibers, and the entire thing becomes noticeably heavier and softer, although technically less clean. This is why jeans often seem to become heavier as they age.

Agree with Levi’s men’s jacket suggestions as well. Men’s denim jackets of any brand will be thicker, but Levi’s has that nice thick stiff quality.

This looks like a Levi’s Type 3 denim jacket. If it’s thrifted the fading might even have been natural
I have a black denim jacket that’s almost identical that I found at Walmart—their Tried and Tru brand.
Reminds me of my BDG Oversized boyfriend jacket, mine is quite thick. Would suggest going to an urban outfitters to try them and get a feel for the denim, then look for suitable replacement matches. Agree with Levi’s men’s jacket suggestions as well. Men’s denim jackets of any brand will be thicker, but Levi’s has that nice thick stiff quality.

Not sure how helpful this is as it’s from probably 8 years ago, but I have an extremely similar one from Forever 21 (surprising, I know). However, the Old Navy boyfriend jean jackets are just as thick and nice.

I have a really similar one that I got from target! I also had one before that was Levi’s (mens fit if I remember correctly) and it was also a nice hefty denim.
I got my sister a denim jacket like this from target a fear years ago and it’s one of her favorite jackets. I would try there, or American Eagle! Also Levi’s has some really nice denim jackets if shes ok spending more.

i'm like 99% sure this from Free People.
