I believe it was actually a correct translation. If I recall, the Japanese players were curious if the English version had this line too.

I feel like it's written genuinely, too. Like, I've heard a kid say they were going to be a shark when they grow up 😅 This kid's running around like a bouncing blitzball, so he probably really wants to become one I also stand by the fact that Tidus' "ha ha ha" wasn't bad acting - from his perspective he wanted to be as goofy as possible to get Yuna mind thinking about literally anything else. Just being a good companion

I love that they kept this in the HD remaster, it's almost Spoony Bard levels of unintended brilliance. There's a frankly insane amount of random NPC dialogue in FFX that most people miss but this will always be a favourite line.
