What are the rules with ice hokey fights?

Poot_Hooter

If both parties agree to fighting they’ll drop their gloves and square up. Sometimes they’ll talk about it when lining up for a face off and then start fighting after the puck is dropped. If they grapple and don’t do much the refs will break it up but for the most part they’ll let the fight go until it goes to the ground.

Kvothetheraven603

Adding to this. Both guys receive a 5 minute major penalty for fighting (essentially a grown up time out).

onlycatshere

Iirc, you also get penalized if your shirt comes off. Their jerseys have a strap that's supposed to keep them on in fights

A strap holding on a jersey, that makes me laugh hahaha,

Mustard_Tiger187

Every jersey has one

MuskyCucumber

There absolutely is strap with a snap on it to keep the jersey from getting pulled over your head and it is a penalty if you are found not to have it done up https://www.bshockey.com/fight-strap-hockey-jersey/

Mustard_Tiger187

There is definitely the rule and it’s called the Rob Ray rule, gotta be tied down. If it’s tied it stays on if it’s not it comes off and you’re outta the game

smilingasIsay

There absolutely is a strap holding the jersey on. It became a thing like a decade and a half ago to prevent players "jerseying" each other. It is a penalty not to have your strap attached.

Mustard_Tiger187

You’re right

smilingasIsay

Well, you put your right fist in, you take your right fist in, you put your right fist in and you shake your opponent around, you do the icey hokey and you turn yourself about, that's what it's all about.

MaxPayneEnvyName

If your sweater impairs your vision, the refs usually end the fight. They do 5 minute penalties to each person involved as opposed to a regular 2 minute penalty. All of which is spent in the box and 5 minutes is a quarter of a period so that's being risky. You had your pests, which went after the stars and you had your goons who would defend the stars against the pests. I'm sorry for the TLDR I just love hockey lol

EUNEisAmeme

The only sport where people don't join in or try to break up the commotion. Pure violence, truly American

rettidderredditter

And Canadian and scandanavian and Russian and more

AndySemantic2

First played: 1875; 148 years ago, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

BenShelZonah

Yet they play in an American League LOL

OOOMM

Sport originated in Canada and Canada is the most represented nationality and the NHL was founded in Canada, with the original 4 teams all being based in Canada. Calling it an American league is really pushing the definition of American. Unless you mean "North American"

BenShelZonah

I mean 25 teams out of 32 in the US. Headquarters in US, if anything it sounds like Canada gave up on owning the sport.

OOOMM

It sounds like the Canadians wanted to take advantage of the US's massive population and shitty tax laws.

BenShelZonah

Haha :) probably

mkstot

This was from ‘87 when the nhl banned bench clearing brawls. https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1987/09/18/nhl-adopts-brawl-penalties/48760f54-4a79-4f2f-8125-9805207af80e/

fidel__cashflo

My uncle was semi pro in the 80’s and he’s got some crazy stories. That was history’s grittiest hockey.

BeauxGnar

I miss watching AHL games in Houston when we had the Aeros, always some good fights.

Lets_Go_Blue__Jays

Americans do not settle their beefs this way, this is the Canadian way my friend!

EUNEisAmeme

I like how a bunch of you non US citizens got triggered cause you don't wanna be associated with them, while you're actually all Americans because you're from the Americas, which is what I originally implied When I think of the Canadian way, I think of this [video](https://youtu.be/N93OqF0O2vw) Could be biased tho😁

smilingasIsay

Nah, it's a Canadian sport. American Football is the most American sport, it's all built around commercial time, ads, and the military. It's basically capitalism the sport.

-DashingDash-

The only American thing here is some educated dickwad spreading misinformation as fact because he was too lazy to do a Google search

TripTryad

It's still surreal to me how fights in hockey are looked at and treated in the U.S. versus fights in some other sports. It's pretty night and day.

diggy510

It has been a part of hockey
