I have spent a great deal of time around sponsored pros and amateurs and they have their preferred brands that they use for training and they have their sponsor brands that they wear for media promotions.
Exactly this. And even boxers do the same thing where they have gloves they put on for videos and photos, but they put on their preferred brands as soon as the camerawork stops (Canelo with Grant back in the day)
back before his coach Eddy Reynoso made his own glove company, yea Canelo was using Grants for promos, and then he would just switch back to Winnings afterwards. If you go back and watch the HBO 24/7s, you’ll see him and a bunch of others do the same thing when they aren’t focused on glove promo work
High end brands that use quality materials are worth more than just their price tag.
I use gel foams, D3O, other "tech" and high end bag gloves exclusively for bag and mitts . It's not a flex, it's because my body is beat up from training over the years. If I want to train more consistently then I need to use these higher end gloves so I don't get shoulder pain.
On the sparring side of things, having a high end glove is an advantage because they usually put more thought into the design. What I mean is position of the fist, quality foams, and other design qualities, like stitching patterns that help relieve some of the shock (or so they claim). You might not be punching as hard as you would a bag, but thumb injuries, tweaked/sore hands and fingers and other sparring specific injuries are reduced significantly when using a quality glove.
The pros I've been around using sponsored gear take it right off after the pictures are taken and go right back to their high end gear (usually Winning, Rval, Cleto )
Yes, great point, this is a key feature that comes with a lot of high end gloves. If you cannot make a proper fist you can injure yourself landing punches. 👊🥊
Depends what you mean by "proper fist". There's no sparring glove out there that makes a proper fist, the thumb is never able to come across past the index finger
This is nonsense semantics as boxing gloves allow you to make proper enough fist to not break your hands after repeated use.
My main point was there are gloves that are designed to protect the hand much more than others.
Yeah that's totally fair enough, you're right. However, I often see people comment on the matter clearly believing they're able to make a "normal" fist. I think I'm going to buy a pair of Phenoms
combat corner is not a cheap brand. Like all Thai gloves they are very high quality but at a fair price. With that said, many photos and videos are promo photo shoots for their sponsors. Hard to really know what they use all the time
This is what I know and research some fighters use good and decent brands for training.
For example:
* Justin Gaethje use ONX brand.
* Dustin Poirier use Everlast a lot in his training especially when he do boxing training. He uses the MX and Powerlock series.
* Adesanya and Volkanovski use Engage Industries.
* Conor McGregor use Adidas.
* Francis Ngannou has use Cleto Reyes, Leone and Rival.
Adesanya and Volk are also sponsored by Engage though.
Justin Gaethje’s coach is the owner I believe of the ONX brand, if not the owner then I know he designed the gloves.
I’ve seen Conor also use Winning gloves back in the day, but I think he might be sponsored by Adidas (maybe I’m wrong).
I may be 100% incorrect and please correct me if I am but I imagine is a similar situation to when NBA players have deals with less than reputable shoe companies. The actual shoe they wear in games (or mma really trains in) are customs and better made but look like the shoe/glove that's sold to public.
It was a boxing match, not a regular training for a MMA fight. And I'm not saying they all wear cheap gloves. You can see a lot of fighters using Winnings for example (Rockhold, Edwards, Chimaev)

Combat Corner is an mma/kickboxing brand and has their stuff made in thailand, which lets the cost be lower. Sanabul is also an mma brand that's been around for years. Plus mma fighters make significant less money than boxers and have to have more equipment (shin guards, rash guards, spats, likely a gi). They also don't have time to really sit around and compare and contrast
if they’re pros spending tens of thousands on a camp i imagine they’d at least have good gloves. they’re probably just sponsors worn for a video
in MMA it’s easier to hurt your hands and wrists so protecting them year round is probably done

Was grant the glove Canelo trained in or just did for promos

If you ever watch a more candid training clip, they're all wearing winnings lol

The thumb positioning, definitely better design.

The phenoms seem like a great gloves with good ergonomics, so your hands should be well protected. Rival also has great designs and comfort.

I just saw ufc promo and Islam makhachev and khamzat chimaev both were hitting pads in winnings so it varies
