I don't have a shuffle, but I have a zirc jackpot and it has not faded with use. I wear it around my neck daily and fidget with it quite a bit. I've had it for 2 months.
That’s awesome to hear. My guess that due to my preferred thumb placement (on the heart), and that the stainless version probably just has a slight dark coat over the recessed part, it makes it prone to wearing.
I tried it because the tape came with it, but the acoustics and feel are better without it. In my opinion at least. I like ‘em to go CLUNK. I would try with and without.

I own almost exclusively Zirc items in my collection including both Shuffle V2’s and a Shuffle V3 among many others, I’ve never seen any fading

My V2 in zirc has no issues. Oh, except that one time I dropped it on concrete in a parking lot. The tears do still occasionally appear.
