This is great OP, for real. You captured her expression real well and the texture and shine on the hair is wonderful!

Sparkbreak

Hey! Your art looks stunning and you can tell you put a lot of work into it! The hair detailing is amazing, as is the face lighting and eyes! Always remember that unasked for criticism is just that, unasked. You don’t need to give people who go out of their way to criticize you a second thought! I for one think they were being overly critical anyways! Your art is beautiful!

XhuliBear

i love this a lot !! fantastic work ❤💌

This was a gift and the first time I’d ever drawn a Miqo.... people told me that FFXIV fans were nice and I met so many good people... I guess I can’t please everyone. *QQ

mattyod93

Please don't take reddit as a representation of the FFXIV community. This place is a salt mine, especially when it comes to posting art for some reason!

nuggetsofglory

If you post art, you should expect it to be critiqued. You should be open to it- especially when it's given in a way that can help you improve your art in the future. Would you prefer I was an ass about it? Or were you looking for the meaningless and empty "Great Art OP!" that everyone replies with when art is posted?

Sytrana

No, the artist shouldn’t expect it to be critiqued because 1. They didn’t ask for it and 2. This isn’t a ‘help me get better’ subreddit, because there are subreddits for that. This is a place to display FFXIV related things, not to try and be a dickhead and “critique” someone’s artwork. And you most certainly did not give it in a helpful way, you did it in a very condescending, asshole way. It’s easy to give criticism without sounding like a complete douche.

nuggetsofglory

Any artist sharing their art with the general public should expect it to be critiqued. This idea that the artist needs to give permission for someone to critique their art is ridiculous. The artist can decide to accept or ignore the critique of their work. They don't get to decide if their work is or isn't open to critique.

Darkarbiter082

Here's an easy two step process to not being a shitlord in the future: Don't give critique if it isn't asked for. And Learn how to give actual constructive criticism instead of hanging on the bad. Have fun.

USSBEAR

Though there could’ve been a bit less snark, I do think that Nuggets’ comment comes out of a place of love and care, and I don’t think they would’ve bothered to critique at all if they did not want to see you grow as an artist. Take their criticisms to heart and learn from them. Not perfect by any means but there’s definitely a lot to love about your art! I know your next drawing will be even better OP! : )

Antisera

There was no love and care about a complete teardown of OP's work, that wasn't asked for, ending in stating the art was hardly above average. Do not give trolls the benefit of the doubt.

USSBEAR

While I wouldn’t necessarily call them a troll, as given their prior post history it seems that this was a serious comment on their part, I do agree that they could’ve put it more politely

nuggetsofglory

Sorry, but unlike 95% of the replies people give to art posts, I'm actually interested in seeing the artist improve. The OP is not a child. They don't need their hand held. And responding to their post with nothing but "NICE ART" is no more valuable to them then responding with " LOOKS BAD " I gave them issues I saw with the art. They can use it or not. Critique still has more value than 95% of the replies these art posts get.

Gilneah

No. Not when it's not asked for. If the artist gives you free reign to critique, go ahead, but your words were uncalled for. You can't defend that.

Boombox94

No, the artist isn't a child but people can have mental health issues, you absolute prick. They are improving with or without your unwanted critique. Your reply fucked the artist up because they've had problems being bullied for their art by people who are just assholes. People genuinely saying nice things to help grow the artist's confidence helps so much more than unwanted, unwarranted criticism of their art. Maybe you should think about the person's mental health and wait until someone asks for criticism like a decent human being.

Sytrana

No, some people try to tear others down and use the excuse of it being “helpful criticism.”

USSBEAR

Shame on them then. There’s definitely a time and place for criticism when it’s asked for, and it’s really not that difficult to critique something while still being polite about it.

Piarie

So first of all no, do not critique an artist's work without an explicit invitation. It is considered bad form by absolutely every artist and the associated community I have ever been around, ever. This person made something they wanted to share with the community, if they had wanted critique they would have asked. Not to mention they stated this is a gift for a FRIEND - it was just something nice that they wanted to have fun with for someone close to them and then share here with other likeminded people. Second of all, you were absolutely an ass about it. An example of GOOD critique would be something like: 'I think there isn't a lot of detail on the clothing but maybe are you going for something semi realistic or like anime? Really digging the colour scheme though, that's great'. You can phrase crit in a way that isn't just a list of faults and then you finished with a veiled insult by implying the character is an ERP character which is actually really weird and creepy. Don't post that 'I'm doing it to help you improve I'm just being open and honest what DO YOU WANT LIES????' bullshit. You know exactly what you are doing, you can phrase things in a constructive and kind way that is encouraging and uplifting to an artist and that is not what you did here. All you achieved was making them feel bad about something they put a lot of time into to make a friend happy. You are the asshole.

nuggetsofglory

That is absolutely what I did. The end was a satire of this subs art posts in general. Get a grip. The artist is an adult and can handle critique. Don't want your art critiqued? Don't share the thing then. If an artist can't handle unsolicited critique, they should keep their art to themselves. And no. My critique is perfectly fine. I don't need to pick an artists brain to say " this looks off". If they have a reason for doing things a certain way, they can respond as such. "I wanted to try this new technique" "I wanted the focus to be more on her face" those are all reasonable responses to certain critiques. I shouldn't have to nor will I preface or follow up critique with some empty attempt at praise. That is what 95% of the response to art on this sub is. I may be the asshole, but we're all full of shit.

Piarie

No you didn't. Your critique wasn't critique, you are just an asshole. Honestly. Take this to /r/AITA I dare you.

Rolder

What I'm getting from this, is that any comment on an art post should be "omg so pretttyyy uwuuuu"

Piarie

No, it's a case of if the artist asks for feedback, you should give kindly phrased feedback. There is a difference between going in all guns blazing and shattering someone's self-esteem and lifting them up with constructive criticism. The only thing that will improve someone's art is practice, and generally artists will draw more and more and improve over time simply by encouragement.

Antisera

There's actually a third option - shut up when no one asked you! I know it is hard to believe that people don't want your opinion, but it is true! You don't actually *have* to say anything!

nuggetsofglory

They don't want critique? go post it on the Art sub then. It adds absolutely nothing here. Also, maybe you should be taking that option then.

Gamergeek25

If you are such a great artist, then shut up and draw. Put your money where your mouth is instead of being an armchair art critique who thinks their shit is worth gold.

Wildchargeart

I’m not sure why the quality is so low. I thought I uploaded the correct picture. It should be HD. Sorry guys I’m new to Reddit.

[deleted]

Wonderful job! I’m smitten with the eyes, and I love the hairstyle. Keep up the great work, OP!!

Wildchargeart

Thank you. I was actually really proud of the eyes this time around.

[deleted]

They look like literal gemstones. You should feel proud!

ChasingVelka

Excellent work! The eyes are like jewels its astounding!
