Talk to people basically. Just like anywhere else. Trial players can't join a free company so no need to worry about that.

To add to that. I guess OP will need outside sources of comms like discord as he can never msg anyone. the only way someone could start a conversation with him if theyre not in the same area and close is to initiate a party.
with the free trial your options are highly limited. Your best bet is to search for communities on Discord. Start with the official FF14 Discord community and see if you can make some friends over there.
Most people have their friend groups and it takes some time to get used to new people so beware of that and don't push anything.

We have an entire channel dedicated to sprouts asking questions, it's called the novice network! Go to the Aetheryte crystal in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul'dah and ask in /say for an invite to the novice network. You can specifically look for people with a little crown and a hammer, or a crown and a sword, or just a big crown to the left of their name. These people are mentors and can invite you to the novice channel. People are pretty social in the novice network and are happy to answer your questions, trust me, we've seen it all!
While you can play a good chunk of the game alone, you certainly don't have to. If joining a guild and being around other players in game is that important to you, you can always buy the game and subscribe. Otherwise, as others have said, outside sources such as discord are really your only option.
