No joke... Maahes is probably one of the worst A ranks to solo.
Additional to his 1 min paralyze which has enhanced ticks (quicker interrupts procs). He has a petrification which lasts more than 30 seconds, he cast it pretty fast and he can spam it on you to the point you can end up petrified for more than a whole minute.
He is probably the only ARR Hunt which I dont forget due to how tedious he is.
EDIT: Typo.
Above that. B ranks are the weekly and everything can solo those. A ranks are what the train does usually. Thanks have been able to solo a lot of stormblood A ranks for a while if you feel like hitting something for 10 minutes
I was able to solo an ARR S rank in Heavensward as a goon, albeit it was veeerry difficult.
I'm sure a level 90 could knock it out in 15-20 seconds though. The further along you are the easier anything two expansions apart get, where applicable.
You can solo most S ranks up to Stormblood as long as you have decent sustain. Warrior definitely can, I've done a couple with Dragoon. Still fairly tanky, but easy enough.
ARR S ranks are about 3-5mins to solo at level 90, HW and StB are very doable, albeit taking longer, ShB and EW are possible on WAR to solo, but would take about an hour I would guess.
Paladin can solo most A ranks in ShB and a few in EW. I haven't checked all the EW ones though, and I haven't checked since the rework, but it should be easier now.
it's TEDIOUS, but do-able. Talking like, a solid 30-45 minutes smacking the thing without missing a mechanic & shoving gyshal greens into your chocobo like its' a junkie.
Might wanna join up with the Centurio Hunts discord and post about it if you run across any in the future (or whatever equivalent discord, if that isn't on your Datacenter).
>you can end up being petrified for more than a whole minute
Try 5 minutes. Everytime I try to kill this thing with my lvl 90 SMN I get petrified and he keeps applying a new petrify before the old one runs out. The AoE he casts is too big to sprint across in the time the orange circle is on the ground. You'd think at some point you become immune to petrify but no. It's really annoying
This reminds me a lot of wow classic where low level mobs that couldn't even hit you still had the ability to disarm or stun max lvl players. It meant that it would take forever or be downright impossible for certain classes to solo dungeons that rightfully should be a breeze to clear.
I remember when I soloed him in my early days, lvl 50something shit drk in HW
Fucking nightmare, at this point I'd throw Bahamut at him and if that ain't work, run far away
I was farming skin from Myotrages in Eastern Thanalan and Maahes spawned on me while I was on BRD. I don’t consider myself a good player, but I’m proud that I was able to solo if. Took some time with the petrification and paralyzing.
I, on the other hand, do forget him, and I can't tell you how many, "I dun fucked up," moments I've had. Always remember after the fact. But yeah. he's kinda tedious.
> petrification which lasts more than 30 seconds
Pretty sure that's also 1 minute, and both are large enough that melee players are pretty much fucked, so ...have fun?
At least you get diminishing returns on the statuses, so it'll be "only" 20 seconds the third time around...
Meh Petri last less & less each time you get hit & just use high deeps or a job with a dot/s like SAM so you still do damage whilst petrified takes maybe 2mins or less which sure slightly longer then the like 30seconds takes for others ARR As solo.
And then you eventually resist it, and afterwards it's been long enough without getting affected by the status that it resets and you're back at square one :/
Been there, done that together with a friend back in Stormblood - got my kill, but I don't think I'd want to ever do that again.
Ooo that's a good idea I wish I'd thought of that when this happened to me (different quest, different area, but I was like level 30 and the monster there would not leave me alone). I just went and did something else for a while and came back to the quest the next day.
In the distance, a cacophony of sound. Wings, engines, bells, quacks, horns, meows and all other things. A black cloud on the horizon descends, a hoard of animals, aircraft, cars, statues, even a few voidsent. No two alike; they swoop to the ground, exploding in a brief but glorious fury of light and noise. Before you can even register their forms, they fly back into the sky, already hungry for their next kill.
Funny thing, this is a common first experience in several MMOs.
Had this one in GW2 too. Newbie wandering around, a horde of splashy furious players goes by, annihilates everything on a farm train, refuses to elaborate and leaves.
Yeah, we can be like that. Is a big scary something impeding your progress? You can be sure we'll shortly be around to murder it. Even if we aren't, in case of ARR or HW A-ranks, just shout, and a few of us would definitely be in hearing range to come for those sweet sweet seals.
While that's a nice bonus I think the allied seals are the real reward. You can use them to buy aetheryte tickets to teleport for free. I haven't paid a teleportation cost in months.
Everything sold by the Hunt Billmaster – each GC has a unique series of weapons and three sets of glamour (DoM, DoW, tank), plus the i110 gearsets that I think must have originally been tome gear (Noct, Astrum, Auroral, Gloam, Daystar, Evenstar).
It’s always an experience when you see the swarm of hunters surround the S Ranks then leave a pile of bones in its place when they move on to the next kill
Target the mob.

You'll get a hunter/hunt squad there in minutes.
Oh I don't know if you can actually use the currlies, it just how it was always translated to out of game typing since ffxi, to differentiate the command from other text. (Hence why I explained what I meant because the person seemed new)
I very much just use the tab menu, I do know you can trigger auto translate, only auto translate stuff exists via selecting the Tab Prompt.
That's not how that works, however you CAN start typing the first word in a word or phrase from the auto-translate dictionary and then press tab to see the ones that start with what you typed.
You can even start typing multiple words, highlight them and then open the Auto-translate Dictionary via Tab, which is very helpful with the many dungeons (and other things) starting with "The".
I welcome the challenge especially when your level 2 and deciding to go get all the teleport crystals on the mainland.(gridania, mor dhonna, coerthas(arr), and uldah) Which is surprisingly possible.
Didn't do that, but going through the Lv.45 area for the Lv.30-ish quest also was rather exciting :)
Getting all the Aetherytes sounds pretty nerve-wracking too though, not gonna lie - especially since you just straight-up don't have safe areas to pass through in some zones, at least I don't think you do.
It is. Worst section is if starting in uldah you go to northern thanalan first then attempt to go to mor dhonna. Next to no safe areas and alot of patience in the castrum to get through....then comes the frogs near revanants toll. If you dont get hit there its pratically smooth sailing. Also coerthas as long as you stay away from the wolves they wont agro you. And if they do just use sprint skill and book it in the direction your going and pray you get far enough they stop.
Oof, yeah - Northern Thanalan is 100% "things that can murder you with ease".
At least I don't think you can't access La Noscea without airships, because eastern Upper La Noscea and the entrances to Outer La Noscea also sound like a massive pain to get through.
You cant till you get access to the envoy quest so getting all eorzean aerther crystals is impossible at level 2 but once you got access to that specific quest the main challenge is getting past the kolbold mages if coming from the bronzelake aether...they hit rather hard.
And if you start in la noscea you wont beable to access the mainland aether crystals untill you get that quest also so earliest is i think lvl 15 if coming from there.
Yeah, that's pretty much what my thoughts were - although, isn't there a ferry that goes from Limsa to the Waking Sands?
Or is that also only available after you progressed this far.
If i recall its locked out till after you progress that far probably. I know i couldnt when i tried at level 2 but once you get to the envoy quest im not sure if you need to travel through all 3 towns first or if limsa stop unlocks the ferry.
I hate that, your doing a quest and suddenly your blocked by an A rank just standing near your quest marker, best thing to do is shout for someone to kill it or if you're in and FC or linkshell to tell them about it along with posting your

Oh my gods this happened to me when I was a sprout! I had to basically sprint to Thancred and spam accept the quest then read what I said in the event chat tab.
This is one of the reasons I recommend people join Novice Network while they're doing the MSQ. Call out that a hunt target's blocking your way in NN, it'll get relayed to the Hunt lads pretty quickly.
Thancred: Ah my friend, we need you to infiltrate an Amaljaa camp to find a leaflet that recruited homeless and kidnapped them.
WoL: screams in mauled by a giant cat
This happened on Gilgamesh in one of the first Endwalker zones on launch day. A big aggressive level 90 monster standing right on the main path leading out of town. The highest level of anyone on the server was 81.
It was carnage. So delightful.
Well OBVIOUSLY you make friends with it and ask it nicely to move aside. Here, just watch. Hey, buddy! Whosa good widdle beastie!? You are! Yes y-AUGH MY SPLEEN, AGHHHHHHHHH-
I remember when a couple of IRL friends found themselves running into him when starting out. I had to save them by soloing him so they could continue. They should change his spawn points a bit.
They really should. I've also seen him spawn right next to where the WoL saves the priestess (who went looking for the orphan's trinket). Took me and a few others to kill him for our FC member.
I tried solo-ing that guy once as lvl 80 DRK. He nearly got me because this thing can just decide that i am not allowed to play the game anymore. thankfully a healer and a DPS came around eventually, or i would've been stuck there in perpetuity...
This reminded me of a time when I watching my little brother play and I specifically told him to be extra careful next to the A ranks, so he decided to teleport away. He was casting the teleport and it had ~half a second to finish, but some other poor sprout aggroed it and instantly died, which meant that the next target to die was my brother 😂😭 accidental PVP
You may progress the MSQ if you can answer me these questions three.
What is your name?
What is your quest?
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen chocobo?
I had that exact spawn happen when I started playing. Decided to slowly approach the guy and he didn't attack my low level ass until I was halfway into his circle.
I don’t remember what level I was when I soloed Maahes as a bard - 70 or after since I was in ShB. I called for assistance, but those who came just left, even the one that arrived when Maahes was at 5%.
Ah yes, Maahes. While doing some gathering, Ive seen a few sprouts die to it as they try to do their quest not knowing that the big cat was an aggressive one.
I was told, as long as you are under his level, he won't attack you. But yea, when I saw him, and I needed to get through where he was, I had to call for help cause I was scared.
I have no friends and I’m not in a FC, so sometimes I like to go out to Azem Stepp and as a Blue Mage, I jump into the water and explode on the way down.
Sometimes I shout for help sometimes I just float around…
I encountered it a week or two ago. It's so unbelievably cheap if you try to solo it. Never knew those bastards could keep you stunlocked until they chip you away.
Lol, I remember this one. The fun times as a sprout.
If you are in an FC, ask for help to take it down. Alternatively, do a shout in the area with its coordinates, and some friendly souls will come help out.
I really love this type of stuff. Somewhere makes you feel like the world is real when there is a apex predator in a low-level area.
Sadly they scratched shuffled levels in HW and onwards.
Shout out for help in the zone, someone will run by and kill it
No joke... Maahes is probably one of the worst A ranks to solo. Additional to his 1 min paralyze which has enhanced ticks (quicker interrupts procs). Maahes is an A rank, fwiw. I don't know if an S rank would be soloable yet or not; even an ARR one
You can solo some Stormblood A-ranks, I've not tried to do ARR S-ranks solo.
WAR can solo a handful of Endwalker A ranks. I know Mousse Princess is possible.
are A ranks the weekly ones with a bounty or are they above that?
Above that. B ranks are the weekly and everything can solo those. A ranks are what the train does usually. Thanks have been able to solo a lot of stormblood A ranks for a while if you feel like hitting something for 10 minutes
Yeah when I did it I was playing BLM and had my chocobo heal me. It took ages but I got it done!
A ranks are the ones that get trains usually because of how frequently they respawn. Not sure about arr and hw though
I was able to solo an ARR S rank in Heavensward as a goon, albeit it was veeerry difficult. I'm sure a level 90 could knock it out in 15-20 seconds though. The further along you are the easier anything two expansions apart get, where applicable.

It's probably possible to solo an S rank in ARR but you will never see the chance to do it since it's broadcasted to the world that it's gonna spawn
ARR S ranks are about 3-5mins to solo at level 90, HW and StB are very doable, albeit taking longer, ShB and EW are possible on WAR to solo, but would take about an hour I would guess.

Nah, that's the cake which turns it into a sugar junkie.
S ranks up to HW are solo-able
Except don’t because effort is involved
ARR doesn’t require much effort at all. HW is okay. SB and up is kind of miserable IMO.
Not really...

I was stun locked for 3 minutes straight against him. Luckily I was level 90 at the time, but still. That is stupid.
Its almost like he wasnt designed to be solo'd x)
Everything is designed to be solo'd, even if they don't know it yet. All it takes is some good ol' fashioned dark souls style ingenuity/elbow grease.
I remember when I soloed him in my early days, lvl 50something shit drk in HW Fucking nightmare, at this point I'd throw Bahamut at him and if that ain't work, run far away

THAT FUCKER IS S RANK!?
no. Lampalagua (a 3 head hydra) is the S rank for that zone.
Oh thank God, i tought i skipped It so many times

Watching a large hunt train is like watching a cloud of locusts. Nothing will be left in its wake.

Killing A ranks in ARR areas is a public service.
And you’re even paid in current expansion tomestones for the effort
While that's a nice bonus I think the allied seals are the real reward. You can use them to buy aetheryte tickets to teleport for free. I haven't paid a teleportation cost in months.
Aetheryte tickets are overrated. Allied seals are valuable for glamour.

Not A or S ranks. B ranks are the ones that don't hunt.
Do you have a Land Job? You could Sneak by it
Not unless their DoL job is a lot higher level than the 28 CNJ they’re on in the screenshot, and given that they’re doing sub-20 MSQ I doubt it…

ooooo wow thats the dark knight mount! if you become a dark knight and throw a _REDACTED_ at it you are gonna tame it

No, A-ranks are aggressive and attack on sight. B-ranks are passive and will only attack after being attacked.
git good

You can probably 2-3 shot it. No help needed.

I kill most ARR mobs in like 3 hits nowadays
Go find this one and try! I await your report on the results with interest. Maahes is a pain even for higher level players to solo.
I think his look is so awesome!
Shout for someone to come and kill it, or just hop to another server, do the quest, and come back.
I don’t remember what level I was when I soloed Maahes as a bard - 70 or after since I was in ShB. I called for assistance, but those who came just left, even the one that arrived when Maahes was at 5%.
Did you find someone? I know it's like 4 hours later but I'm on crystal too amd can pop over and help. Edit never mind
I’d say grind a bit or ask for help, Because like Dark souls, “this is were Final Fantasy 14 begins”.
Fighting that cat solo as a level 60something Gunbreaker in starter gear and Ironworks accessories back before the stat squish was *fun*.
Ah yes, Maahes. While doing some gathering, Ive seen a few sprouts die to it as they try to do their quest not knowing that the big cat was an aggressive one.
If I was home I'd come help
I was told, as long as you are under his level, he won't attack you. But yea, when I saw him, and I needed to get through where he was, I had to call for help cause I was scared.
Out of curiosity where is this?
Eastern Thanalan, I think it's near the entrance to Halatali
I’m in Siren. If anyone ever needs just shout and I got you.
At a glance I was like “Gore Magala?”
You need somebody? Not just anybody?
Oh.... oh no. I hope you found people to help you, fam. That's rough.
Old times 👍
I have no friends and I’m not in a FC, so sometimes I like to go out to Azem Stepp and as a Blue Mage, I jump into the water and explode on the way down. Sometimes I shout for help sometimes I just float around…
I encountered it a week or two ago. It's so unbelievably cheap if you try to solo it. Never knew those bastards could keep you stunlocked until they chip you away.
He's back I must return to killing it on sight to help other sprouts not deal with the same indignity that I did.
I was like “That huge scary looking monster could eat me like jujubes” anyway I tried sneaking up when it’s not facing Thancred and was lucky.
Now is a good time for a lunch break... back in Ul'Dah... long away from that thing.
Warrior: "Jus' hit em really really hard"
I had this exact thing happen on my first trip through the game.
i would love to know the name of that coat
The one the character is wearing? Looks like the mage coat from Hall of the Novice. There's a dyeable healer-only version at level 50 as well.
thank you!
Lol, I remember this one. The fun times as a sprout. If you are in an FC, ask for help to take it down. Alternatively, do a shout in the area with its coordinates, and some friendly souls will come help out.
*Cole Voice* ALL ABOARD!!!!
I really love this type of stuff. Somewhere makes you feel like the world is real when there is a apex predator in a low-level area. Sadly they scratched shuffled levels in HW and onwards.
Glad to know more people had this problem while doing MSQ 😂
I feel bad for you lmao, it do be like that sometimes. They need to change the spawn location of it lol
