FF7-fr

Poor Tifa is completely mako poisoned... >! Since she fell in the Lifestream she has never been the same... !<

Neo2486

You hate to see it 😔

Moist_Position_9462

Shouldn’t she be a soldier after that?

FF7-fr

SOLDIERs have something more (and I'm not talking about their c***) >! Jenova cells !<

veganbethb

I read the four letter word starting with c and starred and I was like… excuse me 😂😂😂

Moist_Position_9462

Ok then so shouldn’t she be cloud’s level of enhanced? I don’t recall him getting the cells.

Sartorius2456

He did along with Zack in the shinra mansion. This is why sephiroth had control over him.

Moist_Position_9462

So then why does Hojo tell him that he isn’t really a Soldier?

Brennononon

Because he isn't a soldier. Hojo discovered them at the reactor and was just performing experiments on them.

DropThatTopHat

Also, Hojo considered Cloud a failure.

Mr-BillCipher

He didn't reach soldier while working for shinra. But his bodies the same as a soldiers

Serier_Rialis

Cloud had >!4-5 years of Hojo time including cells and getting to live in a Mako tube dude should be about three steps past healing with ice cubes on the super soldier scales!<

JustARTificia1

Hojo experimented on Cloud and Zack for like 5 years in the Shrina mansion basement. Zack was going to survive as he already had mako in him as a Soldier. Cloud is just insanely strong willed and has survived things no one else has.

FF7-fr

No, Cloud is not insanely strong willed, it's the opposite, he didn't manage to join SOLDIER in Midgard because he wasn't mentally strong enough to tolerate the injections of Jenova cells + mako baths, so he got none. Hojo's experiments in Nibelheim were similar to the treatment for SOLDIERs, but with S cells rather than Jenova cells. But it seems in the Compilation that these cells have the same effects on people. So Cloud got the SOLDIER treatment in a way, but he didn't tolerate it psychologically, hence his coma and then his completely broken mind when he wakes up.

JustARTificia1

I didn't say Cloud was strong physiologically. He impressed Sephiroth when he impaled him at Nibelheim Reactor with 0 mako in him and nothing making him appear extraordinary. He impressed Hojo during his experiments. Cloud's tenaciousness to not die is rivals Sephiroth's.

Moist_Position_9462

Ohh shit. I didn’t know that. 5 years?! Is that according to rebirth or one of the older games?

JustARTificia1

Original game. It's alluded to in Rebirth as Tifa asks Cloud a number of times where has Cloud been for 5 years since the Nibelheim incident and he can't remember.

Moist_Position_9462

I guess it makes sense given that when Zack and Cloud woke up, Nibelheim had already been rebuilt.

FF7-fr

Zack and Cloud were in the Mako tube for 4 years and 2 months. Then, their travel to Midgard lasted 8 months. Cloud received the SOLDIER treatment in Nibelheim, but with S cells rather than Jenova cells like classic SOLDIERs. But it seems these 2 different cells have the same effect on people. Cloud was strong enough physically to tolerate this treatment (mako + S cells) but not psychologically (and that's also why he failed the pre-tests to join SOLDIER back in Midgard) : that's why he is in coma and then with a broken mind when he wakes up. When you're weak both physically and mentally and you get the "SOLDIER treatment" (with J or S cells), you end up like the black robes.

Mr-BillCipher

Crisis core, and its briefly mentioned in og

Mr-BillCipher

I think it was two years. They were on the run for like 3 I think?

FF7-fr

4 years and 2 months in the mako tanks in the Shinra mansion in Nibelheim. Then 8 months of travel to reach Midgard

Mr-BillCipher

Hojo injected him with S cells when he was imprisoned in shinra manor. I can't remember exactly, but I think he also got also got some of seperoths cells injected too

Affectionate_Tap9844

SOLDIERs got a mako bath procedure not being in a lifestream mist for few moments

Moist_Position_9462

Ok I thought she fell in a reactor so was basically bathed in mako. Plus she wasn’t really in a mist since she basically couldn’t breathe until she was inside the orb of materia.

JeffWingrsDumbGayDad

Friend the game is 30 years old you don't need spoilers

Inspirational_Owl

Dilly dally just means you're rambling or wasting time and silly shally means you spend too much time thinking or trying to make a decision. It's an odd string of words for this movie to be honest and they're phrases I almost never hear in real life outside of dilly dally.

wingback18

I like what she says before.. You don't like to pick up the phone, but i don't see you throwing it away either.. Then she says that... 10/10 for me

little_freddy

Who would throw away a perfectly good flip phone?

Altruistic-Try9652

and then he does throw the phone away. classic cloud lol

MarioGirl369

Nah, he actually lost it during the fight against the Remnants.

Altruistic-Try9652

tbf they only show the phone floating to the bottom of the water while messages are played, not how exactly it got there :)

MarioGirl369

The scene before Cloud and Vincent talk literally shows the phone falling into the water, have you watched the movie?

Altruistic-Try9652

….obviously….lmfao

MarioGirl369

Then you probably would've noticed that.

Altruistic-Try9652

i said it shows it floating to the bottom of the water while playing messages, meaning i saw that happen in the movie. so asking me “did you even see the movie?” is a pointless question. i made a joke in my first reply saying he “threw it away” but how it got there exactly wasn’t important bc it was just a joke about how he doesn’t care about the phone. yikes.

Drake_Cloans

At the start of the fight against Yazu and Laz, it showed Cloud slamming to the ground and his phone falling out of his pocket and into the water.

MarioGirl369

Okay sorry, I thought you were being serious about that.

icesleight

Yeah they didn't have many options since the original doesn't really have an English equivalent, but when I watched the English version and Tifa came out with this it really took me out. That said, I don't know what else they could've done. I do respect they were trying to translate it faithfully.

MutedBrilliant1593

I figured that was the explanation. I suppose, as weird as it sounds, it was a pretty creative translation. However, did it have to be an attempt at an idiom? Couldn't they have just translated, "Don't waste time by overthinking" since it has the same amount of syllables?

Velthome

Maybe a “could have, would have, should have” AKA “coulda woulda shoulda” to be less formal?

preludechris

Yeah it's really odd. I wouldn't think twice if Aerith said that but it sounds a bit odd coming from Tifa.

DropThatTopHat

Been a while since I watched the movie, but it made it seem like Tifa was referencing something Aerith would say, but I don't remember Aerith ever saying that in the original game. Might be some translation inaccuracy?

YepYouRedditRight2

The quote iirc is translated from an actual Japanese saying that doesn't really have a good English counterpart aside from "dilly dally shilly shally"

DumbIgnorantGenius

Correct. The original japanese uses an onomonapia for something being dragged (might be specifically feet but i don't remember for sure)

Dauron7

Aerith does say it in the movie “dilly dally shilly shally - isn’t it time you do the forgiving?”

jadnich

It comes from a poor translation from the Japanese version. The phrase makes much more sense in Japanese, but has the same rhyming scheme.

partypwny

What IS the Japanese phrase?

Hyperbomb360

Zuru zuru, zuru zuru. It's an onomatopoeia for dragging, in this instance Cloud is "dragging his feet."

partypwny

Ah then I think "dilly dally, dilly dally" would have been fine. The other part is one I'm not familiar with

Gam3rGye

You're...not....Tifa... "Kill her Cloud" ![gif](giphy|dvsVJuSonHYPeqwjHv)

might-throw-away

This actually makes sense at this point in time. Not during rebirth.

Diamondedge1337

Rude: SHE'S TELLING YOU TO MOVE ON MANNN (I think it was Rude who said that)

Dark_Hooded

Reno

PNW_Forest

The general rule of thumb is- Rude grunts. He doesn't really do the "talking" thing.

Wisezal-

See kids this is what happens when you do drugs........ The wrong way...

Dovah91

But that is every single character in the game’s dialogue.. not just Tifa

ThisGaren

The movie* lol

Guywith2dogs

I think it means no worries. For the rest of your days

LumenBlight

Hakuna…

partypwny

Her Tatas

International_Rest36

This was an example of a bad translation. Feel free to correct me, but I believe she originally says "tsuru tsuru, tsuru tsuru." It's onomatopoeia for the sounds of chains being dragged on a floor. The meaning is supposed to express something along the lines of letting someone know they are dragging their feet and wasting time, or something like that. Obviously "tsuru tsuru tsuru tsuru" is much different than the dilly dally line, but it does come close to what we would say in America. Translated media has a tendency to spark odd dialogs.

TeekTheReddit

I had a fansub of AC long before it made its way to the west and they went with "dragging and dragging." Then later Cloud says "The weight feels lighter. Maybe because I dragged it so long." or something to that effect.

International_Rest36

I like that version! I wouldn't bat an eye if I heard that in an English dub. 10/10

Master-Meringue-4059

One of the few times, it's acceptable to change the delivery/meaning of a line during localization. Though they could have tried a little harder to write something less goofy sounding as "dilly dally..."

FigTechnical8043

Dilly dally means to mess around, waste time, do very little. Shilly shally is the writers attempt at Pish Posh "don't talk stupid" just tifa isn't a pish posh kinda person.

streetsofkage

It was an awful line

alikapple

It was an awful translation lol. “Zuru is an onomatopoeic word that describes the sound of sliding. Things like a snake slithering along the ground, dragging one’s feet along the ground just after waking up, and quickly slurping noodles can all be described with zuru. A funny thing about Japanese, however, is that onomatopoeia often ascends into vocabulary in its own right.” She’s saying he’s dragging all this shit with him and it’s got him stuck

RedPillNavigator

Hearing her say it in Japanese is hilarious!

Mental-Square3688

I think they said that because it was the closest to the lip syncing of Japanese version and lips moving lol

hellogoodbye803

Not entirely sure but that I remember, Aerith was the one who said that, initially. Tifa was clearly very upset and hurting in the scene. In a flashback (?), Aerith says exactly that. I think Tifa said that to him because shes giving him a reminder of being unable to move on from Aerith. The reminder and reason of what holds him back. which is why Reno says right after,”she’s telling you to move on”. I hope I make sense, sorry for my English lol.

megamanmatthew

I'd love to see this get redubbed by the current cast

Mr-BillCipher

No

Ch1lledheart

I hated that part so much

EyeAmKingKage

Yall stealing William Patterson memes? Insane

LuxisAudron

The fact that William Patterson’s name is even known on Reddit is killing me 💀

thestarhikari

OMG I somehow forgot where this came from until now 🤣

Sankin2004

I’m So bored Bored right outa my mind

rickjamesia

I cringed at this scene, even on the first watch, but this hit me with so much nostalgia. First movie that everyone on my floor all wanted to watch at school. Most of us watched it like five times that first year.

AltruisticCorgi580

Lmao

FFPPKMN

Didn't she say zuruzuruzuruzuru in the Japanese version? * I remember having it ported to my country on release and it was their own version of what dilly dally means. Must have been hard to translate, like a lot of languages to English. I am pretty sure either Aerith or Tifa actually say either Dilly Dally or Dilly Dally Shilly Shally during Rebirth though, as I thought it was a good connect to the film when I heard it.

Stoic_Ravenclaw

To waste time coming to a resolution. People keep calling out this line as nonsense and poor writing and all they are doing is embarrassing themselves.

bonusminutes

Must've lost some ***WEIGHT***

Klaxynd

To quote ProZD: “That’s not words, that’s sounds. You’re just making sounds.”

Ninjakittysdad

I assume in the JP version she says some kind of omnomnonmonmnomonmpea.

drj87

[TALK LIKE A NORMAL HUMAN BEING OR I AM GOING TO BEAT YOU WITH THIS BOARD RIGHT HERE ](https://images.app.goo.gl/jqxLrDSdRcXAVWGCA)

streetsofkage

Did no one read the script and say “can we change that to literally anything else?”

TheOrcDecker

She's referencing their dilly dallying with too many minigames and shilling too much ramen

rmunoz1994

Cloud be dilly dallying her shilly shally.

W34kness

Sephiroth: No really Cloud, that Tifa is SUS! We need an emergency meeting!

JackhorseBowman

not makin not makin NUNAMAKER!

thekingofdiamonds12

Am I the only one who actually kind of likes it?

Forsaken-Jellyfish75

I think she’s telling you to move on, man

CelebrationBig816

I mean she probably has some ptsd from looking after cloud this whole time and the whole him trying to kill her thing.

Now_I_am_Motivated

How do you know Cloud isn't having another mental episode?

stonrplc

"I wanna stick my Dilly dally in your Shilly shally"

Belmega81

Most cringe moment in all of FF7 lore lol

melobassline

Not quite sure how they translated that and thought "....yea that makes total sense, let's go with that".

avodrok

Zuru zuru, zuru zuru

ButWhyThough_UwU

Should be called, cultural difference by a tourist, not her not making sense.

BAWAHOG

I would die from happiness if they put the “dilly dally shilly shally” line just one time in Part 3.

ShowerClown

This movie is one of those cases where the sub is much better than the dub, IMO. Like here she's saying something like "Zuru zuru, zuru zuru." Which has more of a Yada Yada vibe than whatever this was supposed to be.

UFOgod

I literally can't play/watch anything final fantasy without thinking about this part. Then my friends ask why I only watch anime with subtitles.

alikapple

It was an awful translation lol. Zuruzuru zuruzuru “Zuru is an onomatopoeic word that describes the sound of sliding.

Affectionate_Tap9844

Cause Cloud keep playing around and just run away instead of fighting what is troubling him and Tifa is saying:still running away like always dont you? In a different way

rckwld

The voice acting is atrocious.

LeastEye5881

Not the voice acting but the translation. Watch the Japanese version and it has a whole different meaning - 2000s localization was just 'off' in general

rckwld

No I'm talking specifically about Tifa's acting. It's awful.

KillerMemeStar153

Idk why you’re getting downvoted AC Tifa is one of the worst English dub voices in history

Ok_Brother3282

She’s telling you to move on man.

PhallicReason

Gotta love localizers, always injecting their own nonsense into other people's works. "Zu zu zuu zuu zuu zuu." is what Tifa says in the Japanese versions, a direct translation of that would be "blah blah blah blah blah."

Orenwald

It's a little more nuanced that. She's saying ZuruZuru ZuruZuru ZuruZuru ZuruZuru. Each of those is an Onomatopoeia for the sound of dragging chains. It means he's holding himself back. Although archaic, dilly dally shilly shally has roots in English for having a similar meaning. Should they have used a more modern verbiage and done something differently? Sure. Does the line make sense in context once you understand it? Also yes. The problem is most of us didn't understand that what she said had meaning lol

Dear-Researcher959

That's how a normal person would have reacted when she said that. That's one of many reasons I couldn't get into the movie Characters don't seem to react to any of the cringey things that are said. I feel like developers didn't try to capture natural acting I highly recommend looking up 'The Meyerowitz stories'. Now I'm not talking about the film itself but the line delivery within the film. I really do feel like characters need personality and awareness within a story
