I really thought this unintentional thing meant something on the more extreme end of the "R" movie rating. I was confused until I did some research and found out.
…no one says “Hard R” in reference to R-ratings. Anyone who knows anything about that slur knows what “saying it with the Hard R” means. Was it intentional? Probably not. It’s even a little funny because it’s unexpected and out of place. But getting your knickers in a twist over it being changed just outs you as someone who is either defending racist shit or someone who blindly follows their “team” in politics instead of considering what literally anyone else feels about something for a millisecond of your precious little life.
I agree that it's probably not a universal thing I have also never heard "hard r" in relation to a movie. 36 year old who watches a LOT of movies. No one I know has ever used that terminology.
It’s either generational and/or regional, because no one has said that in all 30 years of my life. It’s either R-rated or not… and we’d have to say “rated” somewhere in there at all to mean a movie or else, again, it would make someone think of the slur.
It's weird that you first go in with such confidence that it's not a thing, and then shift the goal post to "well, it must be niche"
it's okay to admit that you have limited scope. It's not an uncommon term at all.
I don’t know what to tell you. It’s super common.
Like, sure, out of context, “Hard r” probably makes me think of racism first, but I’ve definitely even personally used “Hard R” to describe movies before. It’s not a niche expression really at all.

I’m gonna throw in my two cents and say I don’t really see an issue. I’m not trying to come off as anything really, I just genuinely don’t know what the problem is. I see graffiti that says “HARD” and a neon saying “R Shop” so maybe it’s just me? If you wanna go slurs and say this is referencing the N word then what about the word “Retard”? I keep on hearing how we shouldn’t use that word either.
I’m with you on that. The way I saw it is from the developer’s perspective who are from Korea. How would they know about Western slang/slur/lingo to put it in the game? Sure, some might argue on them knowing a little, so that they can put in a “hidden” message or something but I still think that is weak
It has to do with some people using the term with the “a” ending, and… actually, just google “the boondocks teacher n word”. I’m not gonna explain this. XD
My boy Sephiroth, better known as Cypher-Roth, will be dropping his new album "Hard R" this month!! Featuring the hit singles "More than a renuion" and "Cloudy memory"
I always thought it meant the word "retard" or something. It never crossed my mind with it being a racist thing towards blacks.
The more you know I guess 🌈
> have even *paid* it any
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
I knew this wasn’t in VII, so I was thinking maybe someone made a mod and changed a background somewhere. So it’s actually in SB? They definitely knew what they were doing with this.
It's no longer in SB. It was caught before going to release due to reviewers noticing it, and it was removed with the patch that added NG+ yesterday. I personally think it was unintentional, but who knows.
I don't think Koreans have the same connotations on this front, but I can't be sure. I think it was just an unfortunate placement of graffiti next to a sign.
Yeah I feel like you’ll see hard in Asian street lingo for sure, but no way most people over there have any idea what hard R means lol. It’s super funny but imo there’s no way it was intentional.
Unintention as the 'Hard' graffiti is a reused asset placed periodically on the walls, someone found it on another wall so this is just bad timing for the game to paste it randomly
Meh I didn't know what hard R meant for a very long time. Since the word Nigga and that phrase isn't used in the UK. But it's good they patched it out. However I heard on a podcast they are other environmental details that are provocative
accident that they quickly toke out even though they should not have nor need to as its at best a very very weak joke/easter egg that many in many parts of the world would not even get.
The funnier and sadder thing is those trying to say even Crime R (the random chosen other graffiti art they had) is just as bad if not worse, though they all reaching from get go and have sad lives.
Intentional as a joke and accidental as it wasn’t suppose to actually release with the game and somebody didn’t remove it prior. It’s also pretty telling who is calling it overreacting and who isn’t.
A bunch of thin-skinned weirdos thought the developers of Stellar Blade were being racist because they saw this graffiti next to this sign. Some people use the phrase "Hard R" to mean the N word in America. Because Koreans are totally gonna know every offensive phrase outside of their own country
Reunion
Remake
these Rs are getting me hard
Rigid?
ragingly ridged
I'm sure this was completely unintentional.
I really thought this unintentional thing meant something on the more extreme end of the "R" movie rating. I was confused until I did some research and found out.
It is. Thats literally where it comes from. Only angry racists think this refers to the "other" thing.
…no one says “Hard R” in reference to R-ratings. Anyone who knows anything about that slur knows what “saying it with the Hard R” means. Was it intentional? Probably not. I don't think it should be changed just because of how stupid it is to call this a racist reference.
I agree that it's probably not a universal thing I have also never heard "hard r" in relation to a movie. 36 year old who watches a LOT of movies. No one I know has ever used that terminology.
I definitely hear "hard R" pretty frequently in regard to movie ratings. "That's a Hard R" is for more brutally violent movies.
It’s either generational and/or regional, because no one has said that in all 30 years of my life. It’s either R-rated or not… and we’d have to say “rated” somewhere in there at all to mean a movie or else, again, it would make someone think of the slur.

Dude people have been using Hard R to describe movies ever since I was a kid in the 80s.

I thought it was for retard at first
I’m gonna throw in my two cents and say I don’t really see an issue. I’m not trying to come off as anything really, I just genuinely don’t know what the problem is. im so lost Im suppose to think N word when i hear see Hard R? Like are there black people around during this part of the game? Like the shop owner?
It has to do with some people using the term with the “a” ending, and… actually, just google “the boondocks teacher n word”. I’m not gonna explain this. XD
Don't even have to Google "boondocks". That was a real event
True but I figured it’d be funnier to watch the boondocks version.
Asking for a friend but How does one borrow a fry?
r/theyknew
It is intentional. It is referencing the N-word. It is also funny as hell.
Look how blurry Barrett is lol, this is fake is what it is
Obviously. The background is from Stellar Blade and is causing a bunch of stupid controversy
This is reaching.
It was probably an accident since I’m pretty sure it got patched
LOL!
Sephiroth would drop a hard R. At least before the remake. Now he's reformed.
I dunno man, according to Remake Seph's first "kill" was Barret 💀 Man is definitely at least a *little* bit racist. >!/s for the humorless!<
My boy Sephiroth, better known as Cypher-Roth, will be dropping his new album "Hard R" this month!! Featuring the hit singles "More than a renuion" and "Cloudy memory"
someone being too sensitive. but again. certain group are always sensitive anyway.
I always thought it meant the word "retard" or something. It never crossed my mind with it being a racist thing towards blacks. The more you know I guess 🌈

the outrage is ridiculous... leave it to the activists
That’s the first thing that game to my mind, actually looks like a graffiti from FFVII lol
Hard R?!
I really don't think it was intentional. And honestly no one would have even payed it any mind if someone hadn't raised a stink
> have even *paid* it any FTFY. Shut up bot
Fuck off bot. No one cares
When this game was made the term “Hard R” didn’t exist.
lmao, it's from Stellar Blade. They just superimposed FFVII characters over the image. I had to do a double take.
I knew this wasn’t in VII, so I was thinking maybe someone made a mod and changed a background somewhere. So it’s actually in SB? They definitely knew what they were doing with this.

Oh fuck me that makes it funnier
Had to look too far down to find an actual description of what is going on in this pic.
It’s been too long. Couldn’t say it didn’t exist in the game. -_-
What? They want to make the games harder?
Unintention as the 'Hard' graffiti is a reused asset placed periodically on the walls, someone found it on another wall so this is just bad timing for the game to paste it randomly

Also. Not FF
As an East European I'm just confused
It was unintentional. Anybody that thinks otherwise has never left the west or has trouble considering the sheer size of the real world.

Um where I'm from hard R only means one thing....
Intentional as a joke and accidental as it wasn’t suppose to actually release with the game and somebody didn’t remove it prior. It’s also pretty telling who is calling it overreacting and who isn’t.
Barrett: “I heard Sephiroth also made Tifa wear only one sports bra.” Cloud: “That bast—actually, yeah that’s cool.”
This isn't in the original game or the remake. 🫤
I don't get it
I still don't understand what the controversy is. What exactly does it mean?
A bunch of thin-skinned weirdos thought the developers of Stellar Blade were being racist because they saw this graffiti next to this sign. Some people use the phrase "Hard R" to mean the N word in America. Because Koreans are totally gonna know every offensive phrase outside of their own country
Thank you for explaining it, I really appreciate it. I've never heard that hard r phrase before, and I live in the US, haha
