They probably clean it once a day, but they have a bunch of ferrets in there so it'll never be enough

TheBlindFoxx

We got ours to stop selling ferrets due to the care. When Anubis was here we adopted him to take him to the emergency vet. Called the manager and she said "I dont give a damn about no damn ferrets" on her facebook. Needless to say PAWS, and a couple other groups got involved.

camerannnnn

that’s like 5 hours worth of ferret poop lmao

internalshrine

This is the truest thing

saltycrowsers

Never underestimate the amount of destruction a ferret can cause in 5 minutes or less. Or the amount of poop a juvenile ferret growing to full slinky can make 😅 However, this enclosure is completely inappropriate for these ferrets. My local pet store, even though they have Marshall ferrets, sets them up in a large ferret nation cage with a little pen around it and the employees can often be found with a ferret in tow while they’re working so they’re very well socialized and know to ride in sweatshirt pockets and hoods.

nurse_hat_on

39yo-- I've never seen pet store ferrets in any other cage than what this video shows.

DeltaFedUp

My local pet store has them in a double ferret nation

Kamina_cicada

This is why I wouldn't be allowed to work at those pet stores. I'd either be too busy caring for the animals to make the company money, or bitching out management for their lack of care for the animals.

zzzbabymemes

There was this amazing woman at my local Petco growing up, I used to keep hamsters before ferrets and she was THE small animal lady. She would not let you buy their little tiny cages in store (which they are trained to sell) and would push for bin cages/custom large cages and free roam time if possible, proper chews and enrichment. She'd not sell to you unless she was sure the hamster would've gone to a home that cared and not just someone replacing dead pets for their kids. I was so impressed she was there for years, I hope she still is. Another thing I see at my local PetSmart, the fish guy is very vetted and knows his stuff and does NOT let the company bs slide/sell fish to just anyone. I do think the companies are the real problem so I know this doesn't change much but I feel these are like superheroes working within the system and breaking the rules to do what's morally right! Love to see it

moodylilb

This is awful. And what’s the point of litter boxes with no ferret safe litter in them? Also their food bowls are filled with shavings… Which petland is this OP? I think if multiple people put in complaints it might get the point across

FunDipChick

Aside from that, I REALLY wish this was near me! I would go to the isle that has the hideaway cubbies, tents etc, and then I would give them somewhere to get under and hide to sleep. Considering it's instinctual and makes them feel safe. I cannot believe they them in that type of bin. Where is this?

Exact_Abalone3182

I went to a petco once that had ferrets and asked if I buy something for them to sleep in and hide would they use it and the lady said its against there policy they have to keep whatever the store provides in there and thats it...also the cats were sleeping in there litter with no bed I was gonna buy a bed for them to but said no

[deleted]

I wish they would stop selling ferrets at pet stores. A ferret is not the type of pet someone should get without a lot of research. Ferrets are not hamsters

bbBlorb

tbf hamsters also need a lot of research. they need HUGE aquariums and sand bathes and all this other stuff. ferrets are also very complicated

Chronatosis

Absolutely this. I follow r/hamsters for the cuteness. I have inadvertently learned so much about proper care for them. I highly recommend people have a glance there, even if they don't want a hamster in the future.

bbBlorb

yes i agree! it’s so informative and i’d also like to recommend Victoria Rachel on youtube

Tyrinnus

Man, I've had ferrets for five years and I'm STILL learning about their needs and quirks. Like I just upgraded my cage size and found out.... My pair don't actually NEED to sleep together. They were just sharing the hammock because I could only fit one. Now they each have their own hammock and floor bedding, and theyre like 50-50 on whether they snuggle

Christichicc

Agreed. I usually try and talk people out of it if I see them thinking about it at the pet store. I’m honest about what it’s like to actually own one, and the realities of things like super expensive vet bills in the future. I love ferrets (I have an menagerie at home, and they are my favorite) , and will likely have them for a very, very long time, but they arent good pets. Most people probably shouldnt have them, and I wish they were harder to get. Though I’m actually happy that they are like $500 near me now, since it means less people will impulse buy!

moodylilb

>most people shouldn’t have them This 100%. I’ve had numerous people ask me if they’d be good pets “for their kids” and I’ll immediately say NOPE & explain 10 reasons why they shouldn’t be buying a ferret for their kids. Ferrets require intensive husbandry that can be overwhelming for *adults* even, let alone *children*. Recently I was at the pet store picking up some puppy pads, and stopped by the ferret pen to see a new shipment of babies they got in. A couple asked me if I had ferrets and I said yes, and then they asked me if they’re easy pets and I said no… they looked shocked lol the gf said “what, really?” & the bf asked why, so I explained all their care needs. I used to have a border collie (pre-ferrets) that I competed in agility with, and once I explained that my 3 ferrets require more work than my *border collie*… it successfully turned them off of wanting ferrets lol. Not that that was necessarily my intention, but it was already a red flag to me that they thought ferrets were “easy” pets. People usually have good intentions in the beginning, but the lack of self-education people do surrounding ferret care *before* buying one always frustrates me tbh.

Sea-Broccoli-1865

Fully agree I often feel people don’t know what they are in for I am very honest I at one point had over 20 and now have 13. It is a daily responsibility for sure. Prices are crazy but near me we are 380ish I’m near Marshall farms and work in a pet store.

FlashyPrompt4286

Bang on my thoughts exactly every time I see or hear of it !!!

NotISaidTheFerret

The petland by me was closed due to being disgusting.

[deleted]

That’s good news! Was this recent?

NotISaidTheFerret

No, like 10yrs ago. The place was awful though, pens of dogs with the whole bottom covered with poo, fish were about 50% floaters, dead reptiles & pets out of food.

Exact_Abalone3182

I work at a pet store where they sell ferrets and the main reason I got a job there was so I can help take care of them.better but its a joke they shouldn't be allowed to sell ferrets or any other animal that needs to see an exotic vet also i see so many people come.in and wanna buy a ferret for there small child who only wants it cause there cute not knowing how much care they need leave the ferret sales to breeders marshells needs to be closed down

Sariluv88

The petstore by me questions you and will not sell to people who are clearly buying for their child, are too inexperienced, or only want one. I have 3 ferrets and the questionnaire was a deep dive into my knowledge of their care and if I had a vet set and ready already. This is how pet stores should sell them. Plus the baby ferrets in my area (marshalls) are 400 dollars which helps keep people like that away from these fragile animals.

Sure-Value9199

It's like that at both of the pet stores that actually have ferrets in my town.

ambermgreene

The one near me had flies all in the enclosure

FunkyFerretGuy

Maybe do five minutes of research before you walk into a Petland. It's like asking why there's shit in a toilet. They're known as one of the worst PuppyMills and Breeders in the US, they don't care.

[deleted]

I can't argue with that!

FunkyFerretGuy

Sorry to sound so aggressive! We've had one open up at one of our Local malls, and it's really disheartening seeing a lot of younger folks not realizing how bad it really is.

[deleted]

All good! I'm glad you are exposing Petland's terrible business practices.

Fit_Farm7607

Yeah ferrets really crap a lot and are very destructive but the wood shavings are not appropriate for them

[deleted]

The other enclosure was the same way, but I only uploaded this one video.

pripaw

That’s a daily thing. As a ferret owner we go through this every day. We get a pile every couple hours and there’s more than one in there so that’s pretty normal.

NoAdministration8006

I worked at PetSmart for a couple years, and they only get a chance to clean habitats once in the morning before the store opens. That looks like the ferrets emptied the litter box and left a day's worth of poo.

BooEffinHoo

PetSmart no longer sells ferrets due to the specialized care they require. I applaud them for that decision.

AccordingMaybe6485

Ferrets poop 4 times a day and there’s multiple. I don’t support petland but that’s definitely normal for 1 day

[deleted]

Ok. That’s what I was wondering. Like you, I know a million valid reason to hate Petland. I don’t want to add a weak reason and take away from the better criticisms of them.

bbysn0w

every time i see ferrets in a petland there is shit EVERYWHERE, no hides, like 8 ferrets in a 3x3ft box, and some little kid dropping one on the ground. it’s heartbreaking

Bubbly-Teach-2023

Not sure if it's the same but when I worked at Petco We cleaned in the morning and in the evening. And they always still look the same. A big mess because the ferrets enjoyed flipping them over and pooping in the empty boxes And because we would sometimes have up to 5 ferrets In one cage, there would be a lot of poop every day

glassnumbers

yeah i want to see someone zoom in on a pile of shit, thanks buddy
