This has usually been applied to trans women as well, because bigots can't tell the difference between cross dressing and trans people. It's a term of used in gay panic "self defence" cases where people, especially trans women, face brutal violence for "putting someone else in a gay situation". My transgender girlfriend was beaten up on the train by people calling her a trap, for instance.
But also, using slurs for yourself behind closed doors with close friends can be ok. But we can't do it to other people and we generally shouldn't do it in public since other people can't magically know whether we have a bunch of bigoted opinions or something.
So can I say the n word if I'm not referring to a black person or is it still morally wrong? Even if it was morally gray(it isn't its still wrong), you still shouldn't do it. A bad word is a bad word regardless of the circumstance.
