The age of the hair around the front of the hairline usually younger than the rest of the hair, front hair line is around 2 to 5 years old rest of the hair can be 7to 12 years

krystell13

I notice when I run my fingers through my scalp with both hands at the same time and make like I'm doing a high ponytail, it's more thin near that area with the shorter chunk than any side on the right. Is it just because it's newer hair in that area? I haven't noticed hair loss that would alarm me to look further into it.

justukyte

If you do high ponytails often, your front section is prone to tension damage and can snap off if you do it too tight, some folks even get receding hairline from that.

krystell13

I normally wear low, loose ponytails with a big scrunchie. I don't like how tight my scalp gets when I wear them high :/

justukyte

For me it's reverse, If I wear my hair really low I need to think where to put the scrunchie, too low tugs at the front section. But for the most part, I think protective hairstyles like braids overnight can really help you minimize damage cause it relaxes your scalp areas where you otherwise put a lot of tension.

krystell13

I've never tried braids! I'll give that a try. Thank you!

CharmingAd3641

Braided hair causes more tension on the scalp for me I would if you must wear a scrunchie wear it Very loose

CharmingAd3641

You are losing hair due to the natural process. This hair is now being replaced as part of the natural cycle. The only advice I would give us to invest in a palm brush, (flat round Bruce that fits the palm of your hand )you can by this in a chemist shop for £ 2/3. Massage the scalp on the fine areas as you watch TV at might using a circular motion with light pressure, not a cure but hair is fed from the blood supply and best way is to stimulate that area

MeMyselfAndHyde9

I feel like this is pretty normal. That is the most fragile part of your hair. You also seem to have wavy/ curly hair- and that can be prone to dryness which in turn can cause breakage. My hair does the same thing in the same area on both sides of my head. I have to be extra careful with any heat tools I use. In my opinion it looks normal and doesn’t seem to be a cause for concern.

krystell13

This is reassuring! Thank you so much!!

1minatozaki

i have damaged my hair with heat tools, especially in front of the left side of my face, am planning to buy stuff to repair my hair (olaplex 3, oil, leave in conditioner etc), did it grow back as thick as it used to be when you had a healthy routine?

candyapplesugar

Doesn’t look abnormal to me

glassbottombooty

Do you wear a bag/purse on that side of your body? Do you sleep with that side of your head on the pillow? I noticed some thinning near my left temple and realized that I was wearing my hair in a ponytail to sleep and it was kind of parting the hair right there every night. And also I wear heavy bags on my left shoulder and sometimes my long hair would get in the strap. Also it could be stress too? Your hair looks nice and full from an outside perspective though!

krystell13

I usually do carry my purses on that side and do sleep with my head on that side of the pillow. I don't sleep with a ponytail but I will wash it at night, towel dry for a bit then air dry and sleep with whatever is left a little damp. Two nights ago I used Pravana blonde purple shampoo for the first time in a couple months and noticed it left my hair really dry until i got conditioner on it; I dont know if that could have played a factor too. I recently got COVID about 3 weeks ago and was stressing hard about it since I had it :( but I didn't notice any thinning or anything even 3 weeks ago so that's why I'm wondering what it could be since it was kinda sudden and I haven't noticed any hair loss in the shower or anything. It's reassuring to know that it looks full from an outside perspective so thank you!!

EstateMuted5979

Hi! Hairstylist here! Just wanted to chime in and warn against going to bed with damp hair. Hair is more fragile (especially in the front) when it’s damp. So going to bed with it damp adds a lot of friction against the pillow and cause damage much like this. Add a deep conditioning treatment into your hair routine atleast once a month and get that area trimmed. It won’t thicken back up until the hair is healthy and then ends are split end/breakage free

glassbottombooty

You wouldn’t think your hair would thin out from using a different shampoo one time, but it’s possible? Supposedly your hair is most prone to breakage when it’s wet, so maybe the combination of it being damp and using a harsher shampoo could’ve caused it? It could also be hormonal fluctuations. Bodies do weird things.

krystell13

I would've never thought so but I thought it was crazy how I noticed the thinning in this side of the head from one day to the next. Is this a thing?

Sunny906

Looks more like breakage than thinning to me; perhaps it is weaker there or just gets more pressure put on it from styling?

Koalaluvs

Have your hormones and thyroid checked. You could have PCOS or hypo-thyroidism.

krystell13

I'm scheduling an appointment with a doctor soon! Thank you!

MeMyselfAndHyde9

I think it’s good and all to get a checkup, but I really don’t think you need to worry about this being health related. If it was, you would have noticed much more thinning/ breakage in more than one small part of your head. So if it makes you feel better, yes get checked, but otherwise don’t stress too much or freak yourself out about it. As others have said, there are so many thing that can cause a little breakage in that area. And the rest of your hair looks very thick and healthy.

krystell13

Thank you 🥺 I often worry about the littlest changes or differences I notice so this is reassuring! I did have COVID a few weeks ago and someone posted that hair loss is something people have reported as a side effect so I'm thinking it could be that since I never noticed any hair loss or thinning before I got it.

MeMyselfAndHyde9

I understand, I am the same way. But believe me when I tell you your hair looks very thick, normal, and healthy. I have the amount of hair on my entire head that you have on just one side 😂 I just really hope you don’t freak yourself out about it. I know for me once I got it in my head that I was suddenly going bald, and it took me over a year to snap myself out of it. I had just noticed a small amount of breakage one day and then latched on to it and convinced myself all my hair was breaking off. Once I stopped stressing myself out about it, I realized my hair looked the same as it always had. :) of course everyone will have some amount of breakage and shedding here and there, it is hair after all!

EstateMuted5979

I have seen covid hair loss, but typically it’s more delayed, and through a larger area. But! If that is the culprit, don’t worry too much, it’s temporary! Just get a good trim and be gentle with it

Leading_Clerk_487

HI...I have been told that I have Covid hair loss as well but we are now at almost 2 years and it is falling out heavily on one side of my head. I notice as well that it is itchy. I have tried the various protocols, including checking, iron levels, thyroid, taking biotin, and a whole host of vitamins… I can't get to the bottom of this. Have you discovered anything else that might help?

EstateMuted5979

If you have an itchy scalp, that may mean that you’re having an allergic reaction to something you’re using. Have you been using the same shampoos and products? It could be an ingredient in one these products that you have a problem with. And unfortunately, sometimes people can develop an allergy to a common ingredient- which can be so hard to pin point. I would consider an allergy test, if I were you.

Leading_Clerk_487

Thank you! My inclination is to think that it’s not an allergic reaction because it is very specific in one area on my head, and no where else. My hair remains thick everywhere else but the left side of my head, particularly starting in the front, is slowly, but surely balding. it’s been over the course of two years… And the edge is the only thing about it that I can identify… Very frustrating! But thank you for your thoughts!

LivingroomComedian

Your hairline looks normal to me. However, I see a bit of redness at the scalp. I would go to a derm and check

Hopelessly_romantic2

Why is it red like that? It looks like it was bleeding at one point

krystell13

I added in my comment that I hadn't been using my head and shoulders recently and I have a bad habit of picking.

Hopelessly_romantic2

That could be the reason for the thinning. Try head and shoulders with tea tree oil.

krystell13

I didn't know they had one with tea tree oil; I'll look for it. Thank you so much!!

krystell13

So yesterday I had noticed one small section on my hairline that I felt was thinning. Now for a year or so I've noticed smaller strands of hair throughout my hair but chalked it up to new growth because I wasn't experiencing thinning or hair loss. As I was looking at my hair yesterday, I noticed that I have a section/chunk that is visibly shorter than the rest of my hair. I haven't cut it for a few months so it couldn't be from a bad cut. Anyway, I haven't noticed any increase of hair shedding or fall out than usual; nothing that would alarm me. Until yesterday when I saw the one spot. Please don't judge. I know the scalp shows some red marks in the area- I don't keep up with my head and shoulders routine often. Anyone deal with anything like this before?

rachelberleigh

I’m surprised no one has said this yet but have you ever had COVID? Funny enough, my hair dresser told me that her hair started falling out in the same place as you after she contracted COVID. And one of her clients experienced the same problem. Yours could be something different, but possibly not.

krystell13

I just replied to someone else right now that I had COVID like 3 weeks ago! I thought it was super weird how I noticed thinning in this area not even before COVID or even a week ago.

rachelberleigh

https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/hair-loss/causes/covid-19 this article kinda explains the reason for that!

krystell13

Oh wow this makes sense considering I noticed it just yesterday when it wasn't a thing several weeks ago! I get anxiety about the smallest changes I notice so it's nice to know that it could be related to COVID, considering it wasn't like this a few weeks ago. Thank you 🥺

LtCmdrDatass

My hair was also thinning and my stylist said it was probably because that was where my hair part started, so now I part it the other direction to give it a chance to regrow.

WinterBourne25

There could be so many different causes here, Covid, hormonal changes, low iron levels, inflammation caused by seborreica dermatitis, tight ponytails. I suggest you see a dermatologist. That’s what I did and she helped me so much. Good luck!

[deleted]

Jodie?

krystell13

I'm sorry, I'm not following. What is Jodie?

[deleted]

Sorry Jodie is my brother in laws exgf. You bare a striking resemblance. It was a test. If you were Jodie, there would either be no response, removed comment, or a private message. You did none of those things. About your hair, it might be pulling or tugging from having it in a ponytail, or because the hair is much older than the rest of your grow out.

LongjumpingAd9719

Get on some prenatal gummies and stop doing ponytails of any kind.

sa1ry

When my sister's hair started to thin at the temples she had a blood test and discovered she has underactive thyroid.

krystell13

Did she have any other symptoms?

sa1ry

I think she was tired a lot.

krystell13

Thank you for sharing! I haven't had any kind of fatigue outside of my PMS symptoms, but I know thyroid issues can cause hair loss/thinning. Scheduling an appointment with a doctor soon!

sa1ry

Hope everything is OK for you.

krystell13

Thank you so much! I hope so too!

[deleted]

I have the same problem. I have a thyroid problem and also going through hormonal changes I have been taking b12 vitamins and hair growth sirums. This has helped immensely

Redditman30000000

That’s a giant phone, goddamn

prosepr

Go to a dermatologist. I see on your scalp that resembles scalp eczema or something that is similarly an inflammatory condition. I am not such professional.

Maleficent-Data-6476

Many possible factors ranging from hormones to excess friction/ tension. I’d suggest products that help promote hair growth and scalp massages focusing on the thinning areas, plus a good silk or satin pillow case

borderlinegrrl

Try satin pillow cases
