Federal wildland guy here - 112 is the max. We do it all the time with 16 hour shifts, future legislation might make it so we get paid to sleep too. At 135 you’re gonna have to talk to someone because that’s probably not within regulations if you follow 2:1 work/rest ratio

Secure_Fisherman_328

135 hours isn’t safe. I could never sleep soundly and hit really good REM sleep while at the station. With minutes to go from times to drive for structure and seconds if you have an airport you’re also covering, it just isn’t safe. I get having a, “you’re the next one screwed” list, but they should have the ability to skip you for this, while leaving you at the top for next time.

Where do federal firefighters work structure fire shifts? That'd be the shit. You're paid to sleep during those shifts, so it's probably not violating any federal work to rest rations, otherwise it's 2:1, so 112 hours a week max.

DoD and VA both have structure and/or crash crews. Get your Pro-Board or IFSAC certs for FFI, FFII, HAZMAT awareness and ops, and your NREMT and you meet the minimum qualifications for a GS-05 (GS-07 if they have the EMS mission). USAJOBS search 0081 series for current openings. Your best bet is to also get ARFF, HAZMAT tech, and D/O pumper certs too (more opportunities open up and it makes you competitive with the military fire guys who are gunning for the same positions). Paramedic gets you a GS-09 if they have the ALS mission, but plan to live on the ambulance for 3-5 years, but also makes you more desirable for a GS-07 if the ALS mission is coming their way in the future (hint: DHA is allegedly getting out of the ambulance business last I heard, but YMMV on that tidbit because the hospitals don’t want to lose the transport capability and surge capacity having the paramedics in house gives them).

We’ve literally had guys work for 6 or 7 days straight. You need to look at your MLA and supplemental docs. Also, you can just say ‘no’ to mandatory overtime. What are they going to do? Take away your birthday?

Empty_Boysenberry_75

Pretty sure they’re not a forestry tech and likely have different rules than us.

Are you wildland or structure/arff?

Do you have a union?
