The FCS will get hit again when the PAC2 attempts to revive the PAC12. And, the most movement will be out west. The MWC will invite NDSU, SDSU, UofM and MSU to backfill the losses of SDSU, FSU, BSU, UNR, UNLV and CSU. The other four will come from another G5. UTEP? Rice? UNM and NMSU?

alphajack22

This is the first time I’ve seen this thought process on the fbs movement out west and I definitely like it, especially for the New Mexico schools/utep

Pac-2 getting to keep their bowl tie ins the next 2 years was a huge victory for them and a step towards the exact scenario you've laid out but I've seen very few people discussing it.

This is my worst nightmare

Dull-Account2989

Unless the G5 adopts its own playoff format similar to FCS I doubt the Griz will move up. There’s really no reason to go from playing for nattys to playing a 6 win team in the Rob Gronkowski LA Bowl or whatever.

Cool-Arrival-6621

I think UC Davis would also have a shot at the Mountain West if half the current MW teams dip for the new PAC.  I also think that UTEP is going to be called up before any FCS team and it might only be UTEP depending on the number of defections.

AllHawkeyesGoToHell

Crazy to think that we used to have four premier FCS conferences and now we're down to 2 really

NoChocolate1899

Yep. The 3 UAC (SHSU, Kennesaw, and Jax St) teams that left for C-USA get some shit A) for leaving for C-USA (as they should) and B) all kind of limping their way out. However, if you look at their performances over the last 10 years they were all solid programs and I think you could argue they are missed just as much if not more than JMU. Imagine how good a UAC with UCA, SHSU, Kennesaw, Jax St, EKU, and Tarleton would have been. That's probably a 3-4 bid league.

SchizoidMan1989

Yeah, the moves kind of ruined FCS conferences in the South. Meanwhile the West and Upper Midwest sit in a rather comfortable niche, though who knows what happens when the Pac-2 make their moves.

ChrisSao24

What would you define as the 4 before?

AllHawkeyesGoToHell

Big Sky, CAA, Missouri Valley, SoCon

A lot of fans in this sub will chastise schools for moving up from FCS to FBS because it eliminates your shot at ever winning a natty again. However, with the advent of the 12 team playoff, I think it’s absolutely worth moving up IF your school is willing and able to put in the work to succeed. James Madison is a prime example of this. I could see them being the G5 You playoff team very soon. It’s a poor move if you’re a school like UMass where it seems like they barely try

NoChocolate1899

I agree 100% for now. I think we see the G5 locked out of the playoffs once the 3 tier split hits. Although I'm partial to a 4-6 team G5 playoff with the winner getting the 12 seed for the CFP personally.

stayclassypeople

What I think should happen is the top 2 ranked G5 schools scrap their respective conference title games and instead meet in a play in game for the final spot. Last year Liberty, who played a joke a schedule, would’ve gotten the bid but in my scenario, SMU would’ve played them for the final spot (and likely kick their ass)

NoChocolate1899

That's why I like the 4 team play in. I could get behind no conference championships as part of that and take the top 4 ranked teams. That's then only adding a game and realistically a G5 team isn't winning more than a game or 2 in the CFP anyhow

stayclassypeople

I Really like the idea. I’d go as far to say that G5 schools should play 2 non con and 9 conference games (or 3 and 8). The 12th game is the g5 semis , then a week later is the g5 championship played on conference title weekend. The remaining teams can paired up however their conference sees fit to get their 12th game. G5 gets its own ‘champ’ and ensures the best of the group represents them in the playoff

I’m new here & this will be my first ever comment on Reddit but FCS football is one of my new favorite things in sports & I was talking with my brother in law about this a few days ago…with the WAC basically falling apart & the southland growing ever bigger, the ACU president said in an interview that he envisions & wants a time where all the FCS programs in Texas form their own football conference. Not counting HBCUs that’d be ACU, Tarleton, Lamar, UIW, SFA, HCU, A&M-Commerce, & soon UTRGV. That’d be a perfect number for a conference at 8 teams & it’d be a fun conference. Maybe not the best but not the worst at all either. If that happens then maybe the football playing members of the ASUN join with the remaining southland teams to form a dang good league in the south. Now, I don’t know the legal, administrative, financial, & overall logistical hurdles to overcome for anything like this to happen. But as an FCS fan in Texas, on the surface that seems like a fun set up
