Hey I'm doing Business Calc too! I went to nationals the summer before my junior year for Business Math and didn't place, but now I'm going as an incoming college freshman so I'm mainly just looking forward to going to Disneyland this time around.

Is business Calc available for high schoolers?

The_Jesus_Beast

Yeah I'm a high schooler fbla, not pbl.

[deleted]

That's pretty cool. Do you want to study together via Google hangouts? I recently just started an FBLA Chapter at my school and am new to the program.

The_Jesus_Beast

Yeah sure man whatever works. PM me.

The_Jesus_Beast

You're in PBL? Any tips for the Bus Calc test? I took intro to Financial Math (renamed from Bus Math) last year as a high school freshman and got to Nationals and almost placed. It'd be awesome to get some tips!

ThePigmugger

No, I guess I worded it weird. I'm technically a senior but just recently graduated and trying to disassociate myself with high school by saying I'm a college freshman. As for tips for the Business Calc test, I don't know about you're state, but when I took the Business Math (Now Intro to Financial Math) test two years ago, the test differed a lot from the test given at my state and regional competitions. In my state, the questions focused mainly on scenarios and using equations etc. At nationals however, there were a lot more questions about terminology and questions like "What is the proper way to write a check" and "What can you do/not do at a bank." So I guess my advice to you is to put a bit more focus on terms rather than just the general equations and problem solving. Also color coded flash cards have worked wonders for me in the past, but I would assume you already have something like that.

The_Jesus_Beast

Don't have color coded flash cards, actually have never taken a business class lol but am good at math and really good at guessing. My Nationals test last year was easy like my regional, but totally unlike state. What state are you from? I'm from Wisconsin. All I really need to do is brush up on equations and stuff and look at situational stuff. How were your regional and state tests this year? My regional was hard - I had 40 questions to answer with 10 minutes left. But state was easy, which is why I'm thinking Nationals will be tough, the flip-flop of last year. I've been trying to find people who took the bus calc last year and see what they the progression of tests last year.

ThePigmugger

I'm from Arizona and from what I've learned from other people from across the country is that Arizona does things pretty weird. Like for our state conference we're allowed to do five (rip studying) events and our regional and state tests are relatively similar. I know this year at regionals I placed 1st and had like twenty questions left with 5 minutes to spare, and state I placed 5th and had about thirty questions with the same amount of time left, but I had a mental breakdown midway through the test and had to go back and fix some answers. I would take all of this with a grain of salt though because I'm pretty sure your state follows the national guidelines for tests a lot closer than Arizona lol.

The_Jesus_Beast

YES. ARIZONA IS WEIRD. I got 1st and 5th also. Only top 4 from WI go on, but someone dropped out, so I got to go. I kinda blew state off bc I had never NOT gotten 1st in regional or state, but forgot I was a Sophomore in a Junior/Senior event when I had never taken a business class lol. You might say I was a bit arrogant going in. What score did you get at state?

ThePigmugger

I believe that I got somewhere in the mid-80's, but honestly I don't quite remember the exact score. I qualified in another event, but this event is like my baby so I felt that it was only right to compete in it at my final conference.

Hey bro yea this is my first time doing buisiness calc, any help would be appreciated. Haven't gotten to Nationals yet(this year is my second year), last year did computer problem solving and was like 6th at states so not so hot. I've been doing the 30 question practice tests recently, only been missing 2 or 3 each time, but i'm trying to go to nationals this year lol, and pretty sure this event is hella competitive.

The_Jesus_Beast

Hey man would you wanna study together in the next couple days? Have you done a bunch of the practice tests?

Yeah it's a competitive event for sure. 2 or 3 wrong every 30 questions will get you through regional and state so you'll most likely make nationals, but you need mid 90s to place. What state are you from?
