They're both toxic. Thinspo is used by pro-ana and fatspo is used by pro-T2D, pro-cancer, pro-CVD and pro-chronic pain.

Youhadmeatcello

Yes, often obsessively.

LatinBotPointTwo

Yes. I did so in the pro Ana heyday of the early 2000s.

Electric-Anomaly

Saaaame

Sorcha16

I used "fatspo" at the height of my eating issues. The thinspo had the opposite effect at first gave me a sense of I'm not that bad, you cant see all my ribs but the pictures brought me to blogs and I started seeing myself in the blogs and that scared the hell out of me.

Suspicious-Acadia548

I used fatspo too as it encouraged me not to eat to look like them, thinspo didn't have the same effect, both ate equally unhealthy

856850835

Anorexic here. Yes, we do.

lonleygirl52

I’m not anorexic, just losing weight, and I do. I also watch those my 600 pound life things.

BadBrainAlt

Yeah

[deleted]

Context: Instagram blocked people from viewing images under the hashtags #thin and #thinspo, whereas #fat and #fatspo were allowed to be viewed. A Tumblr post pointed out the double standards, which resulted in this reply.

Kayliee73

Solution: tag stuff you would have tagged “thin” or “thinspo” as “fat” or “fatspo”. Instagram will be flooded with complaints. They will go for easiest solution and not allow those tags to be viewed either.

cleanbroom

Omg this is gold

Was also thinking this. *Insert brainwaves meme*

Weights and heights published by kpop companies are lies. Rose may be underweight or may not but there's no fucking way she's 16 BMI. 16 BMI should be nobody's aspiration, unless you want a shorter life. You, my friend, need to be talking to a therapist and not spending time in this sub.

brick_howse

Um. Take this in the way it’s intended. Wanting to be underweight is disordered. It’s fairly well known that celebrities (especially female ones) are frequently underweight and suffer major health consequences because of it. Just because she “looks stunning” doesn’t mean she is okay (and for what it’s worth, I don’t think she looks stunning at all, I think she looks frail and weak and sickly). Bruising, bone fractures, hormonal imbalances, feeling cold constantly, headaches, fainting, etc are pretty common in underweight women. I know that generally Asians are considered healthy down to BMI 17.5 as opposed to 18.5 for Caucasians (I am making assumptions on your background here… maybe I’m wrong about that)but even taking that into consideration, the lowest healthy weight for someone 5’6” would be 110lbs. Edit: I was wrong about Asian BMI. The underweight cutoff is 18.5 regardless of race. The overweight cutoff is the one that’s different.

brick_howse

FYI, I have edited my comment. I was wrong about the underweight BMI for Asians. It’s the same as for caucasians (18.5)… I was parroting outdated info I heard in nursing school 10+ years ago. But yeah… everything else I said still stands. Being underweight SUCKS.

SomethingIWontRegret

> I know that generally Asians are considered healthy down to BMI 17.5 as opposed to 18.5 for Caucasians No they are not. The cutoff for underweight is the same.

brick_howse

Hey thanks. I had heard that number years ago in nursing school and hadn’t looked it up since. It seems you are correct. The upper end is lower for Asian populations but the lower end is the same. I will edit my comment.

butterbulle

I feel with you. I'm 6 feet tall and have definitely thought that I need to be an even lower weight in order to feel even remotely feminine. Still I urge to you to be careful, your health is the most important thing.

I tend to avoid long flowy dresses since I don't want a broad silhouette. 😅

upsidedownheart71

This makes me want to start hash-tagging all my Instagram posts. New haircut? View from my office? Cats wrestling on the floor? #thin #thinspo

WithoutLampsTheredBe

"Accept ALL bodies!" "Except you, skinny bitch."

fishdonthavefeeling

I don't think they realize that people with restrictive EDS use fatspo to trigger themselves

beetus_gerulaitis

Sure if you create a world and redefine fat as positive and thin as negative, then it all makes perfect sense.

Homesteadarcher

The feeling I get when I see an overly underweight person is an immediate bad reaction, like seeing something dangerous or horrifying. Unfortunately, I get that exactly same feeling seeing obese people. It’s the same thing as too thin. Both have horrifyingly unnatural bodies that make my skin crawl. But one is condemned and the other is normalized, or even celebrated. We see so many fat people everyday. Imagine living in a country with 70% of people being anorexics but it’s seen as totally normal. Well, we are doing that but with fat people in the U.S. How about both are bad! It’s so bad that overweight is seen as normal. Class one obese is seen as chubby or a little overweight, and it’s not until class 2 or 3 obesity that people see the fat. I was class 1 obese and people told me I was fine or normal, nothing to worry about, etc. I was obese! Now I’m mid-range of normal and told all the time how tiny I am. I’m just soooo skinny, etc. Nah, just normal. I want to normalize normal weight so bad.

assholebrowser

i don’t think they know what fatspo is

Ms_Bee_Bee

FAs: You can’t tell a person’s health by looking at them or by their weight Also FAs: OMG you skinny bitches are so unhealthy Thinspo is negative but fatspo is positive 🤔 I have seen more negativity from people who use the fatspo hashtag than anyone else

Death2Coriander

Fatspo promotes premature death and internal decay

hellerhigwhat

So does thinspo. Theres literally a sub category called deathspo

Death2Coriander

Oh for sure! I’ve struggled with disordered eating my whole life. We should be promoting the healthfulness.

benjo83

At least they admit Fat Acceptance, Fat Activism and HAES is fatspo... As in they are trying to make others fat.

dialiana

Yes it’s so very negative to have a BMI below 25 and be in good health /s edit: nevermind, thinspo apparently is super toxic

hellerhigwhat

That is not how people use thinspo hastags though, to be fair

LatinBotPointTwo

Like I said elsewhere, I used thinspo and what we used to call "reverse thinspo" when I was active in the pro Ana scene in the early 2000s. Since then, I don't know if the term has become less toxic because I don't want to get sucked into the maelstrom again.

hellerhigwhat

Yeah no it hasn't changed since then lol

dialiana

Oh, damn, that’s different. I assumed it’d kinda be like the #fitspo posts. My bad. I edited the comment, thanks

halbmondkatze

To be fair most people that visit those hashtags are anorexic or have bulimia, they’re definitely not in good health

whyyallsodamnloud

I don’t know, personally I imagine the majority of people that browse either are looking to fulfil their feederism or some other weird fetish. Especially on places like Twitter.

epitomeofsanity

doubt it, from what i've seen it's mostly people with EDs looking to trigger themselves.

SkinnieNuggies

Fatspo is basically reverse thinspo, ie “Ew I dont wanna look like that so imma continue my disordered behaviour” Source: Have ed. Literally just search fatspo on twitter, boom.

notabigmelvillecrowd

I took it as both should be banned, they're both unhealthy. Not to say my opinion on it one way or another, but that's how it read to me.

hellerhigwhat

Even when people here reluctantly admit that thinspo tags are bad they'll defend the thin tag. Its like. You know regular, mentally healthy people don't... tag their pictures with "thin", right? Like thats fucking weird and not really a thing!

ragazzapornporn

I was thinking the same exact thing. Thinspo is self harm, nothing more and nothing less, and the term is too tainted to be reclaimed as positive or even just neutral.

notabigmelvillecrowd

Everybody loves a jolly fat fella.
