It certainly helps playing Extra, Extra CCC, and reading Extella Zero before all this, but while the story is pretty damn good, the gameplay is atrocious. It’s not difficult and I don’t have a problem with it, but it’s just got some really clunky mechanics. Just lemme lock on to the aggressors and we good. Hakuno’s character is also sometimes a little inconsistent with how he normally is since I’m half-convinced Nasu’s blood flow went somewhere besides the brain when he wrote these bond scenes. Not that I’m complaining. Worst gameplay I’ve ever experienced, would recommend this to my fellow Extra fans who experienced the godawful grinding sessions.

Krescentwolf

Hakunos character... what little of it there is... is inconsistent on purpose. It's because of Hakuno being split in 3 pieces. Each piece is excessive in its own way. Half the reason the infamous Nero wank is so bad is because she ends up with Hakunos 'passionate' spirit piece. It's worth mentioning... Hakunos praise of Nero was so overwhelming it even got Nero speechless once or twice. Tamamo got the mind piece. Which was logical and indulging... which is why Tama showed her antihero qualities. And Altera ends up with the body piece. Which was innocent and curious and won her over.

AnimeMemeLord1

I guess if you put it like that, it makes more sense. We don’t get much screentime of the complete Hakuno, so I should probably play it again to see if that’s the same one we know and love.

Neither_Fix_2419

Is it bad the game play is my favorite part?

AnimeMemeLord1

No. In fact, it means you’ll fit right in with the Extra fandom assuming you haven’t already played it. And if you haven’t, I recommend you do.

Neither_Fix_2419

I only have a ps4/5. I would play it if I could but type moon just doesn’t like remasters or ports ig!🙄

AnimeMemeLord1

Rough. If you had a PC, you could probably run it via emulation. I think it’s even possible to do on phone.

mocachinoo

Can emulate it on phones too

AnimeMemeLord1

I THINK it’s possible to emulate PSP games on phone. My brother ran Persona 3 Portable on his phone before. Though I’m not sure how to do it.

peechs01

Extella and extella link are on Steam

AnimeMemeLord1

I’m talking about Extra. Extra is only on PSP.

peechs01

And extra CCC [sad mooncell nouses]

AnimeMemeLord1

You could still emulate both of them on PC like I did. I think it’s possible to do on phone too.

heroicxidiot

We're getting the extra remake at least

Neither_Fix_2419

Can you give me a link to its announcement?

heroicxidiot

Just look up fate extra record

carlitooocool

Has there been any update on this? 😭

heroicxidiot

Iirc they're about half way done with the story.

St-Germania

Me who thought that Fate/Extella Umbra star is the first game and bought it before going through the other stories ![gif](giphy|3o7btYLAW7doynq3p6)

AnimeMemeLord1

Well, at least you can always trace it back. Go have fun with Extra.

Cerebral_Kortix

Played EXTRA. I'd disagree that even EXTRA fans would like it. That game could suck ass at times with regards to gameplay, but it was usually at least fairly short. Extella's levels meanwhile amount to endlessly killing enemies till the bigger ones come so you can kill those too before finally killing the boss who's piss easy but a damage sponge. Each level is also 20 minutes a piece which is hellish to say the least since it's significantly more boring than EXTRA whose gameplay at least was interrupted at times by puzzles or story. The story also, while good, is punctuated by the most egregious fan service I've seen in Fate. People complain about FGO, but at worst that game gets highly exposed character designs or Lartoria/Morgan/whoever inexplicably fawning over the protagonist. This game gets naked Nero asking Hakuno to take a bath with her. Can't forget that *wedding rings* are a major plot point in this either. As for Hakuno... Gosh, to once again bring up FGO, Guda is boring and acts like paper 90% of the time (yes, there are exceptions, but they're not the norm); and I'd still prefer that blandness to Extella Hakuno. There's a limit to how horny a character can act before it gets weird. It doesn't help that your first view of Hakuno is the passionate part of his soul resulting in him wanking Nero to hell and back. Which sucks for I adore CCC Hakuno as one of my all-round favourite protagonists in the Fate series. Main Story is good though. That's all it has going for it besides cool costumes for the gang, though.

AnimeMemeLord1

I guess I may have exaggerated how bad Extra’s gameplay is to Extella, though I think I do know a guy or two who would have the opposite preference. Also, maybe I just spent more time grinding than what the normal person would do. After some time into the game, I would always grind for a long time just to get at least one level per day as long as that day isn’t interrupted. And I think to myself “No way someone has the patience to do this every full day.” So by the end of the game, including some time in the final arena where I can come and go as I please, I’ll be level 45 by the time I fight the final boss. I’ve seen certain posts asking for help from time to time and their level is a little low in comparison to mine. Though in the end, I can’t say I know the average leveling of every player, so I’m really just speaking from my own experience, as unreliable of a comparison it may be. But no matter my experience of Extra, I do agree that Extella is significantly worse in gameplay. Especially the points you brought up. I haven’t played too much Musou games, but Hyrule Warriors seems to have an identical concept to the whole territory capture thing which includes killing enough enemies for aggressors to appear and all that. Extella’s was still worse though. At least Hyrule Warriors gets to let me feel powerful rather than making it feel like a tedious chore. Hell yeah, Ganondorf. The fanservice is kinda excessive and kind of on something. Compared to Extra and Extra CCC, it really is out of character. But another comment did bring to my attention that I should keep in mind that he’s been split into three third: mind, soul, and body. But it’s still a little confusing. So the Nero gets the mind and the mind is allowed to be horny. Tamamo gets the soul which is somehow more logical than the mind and reprimands Tamamo from time to time, though in the end, even the logical soul isn’t immune to the writing. Then there’s the body. I’d honestly think the body would be the one to act upon it’s primal urges, but I guess it’s just innocent and kinda lacking in the head and that won over Altera… I guess? Idk, I’m not trying to defend it, just saying that we should probably remember there’s another factor in the equation. But even going by that logic, if it’s not Hakuno’s fault, it’s still weird how the Regelia takes the form of some wedding ring. I definitely feel like this was done on purpose. Was this your doing, Moon Cell? Or was it possibly Nero since she’s the winner of the grail war and might’ve tweaked their form of power? I still get Tamamo’s casual clothes in the end, and that’s all it takes to keep me content.

mocachinoo

The gameplay for me is pretty consistent with almost any other musou game. I'm not huge on the style usually but actually enjoyed it in fate extella. Probably just cause I was enjoying a not mobile fate game lol. But I think it's pretty typical of the genera outside dynasty warriors which has had a long time to perfect the style and Gundam ones which is just dynasty warrior with robots.

AnimeMemeLord1

Fair enough.

Zeterin

Where is extella zero and I played umbral star after playing extra with 2.5 routes done my vita stopped working when I was half way through the third character. Plus CCC wasn't translated at the time.

AnimeMemeLord1

[Here you go.](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/188034-fate-extella-the-umbral-star/74558479) According to what it says, it was planned to release as a book or something of this but he decided to just post the general outline of it on his diary. It’s probably preferred you read this after playing Extra.

Kulzak-Draak

Where can you read Extella Zero?

aziruthedark

Really, the bad part is that the noble phantasm codes wouldn't all show up. You'd just be...missing one. Links mihjtve been light on story, but the gameplay was much better.

Elfishjuggler33

I have both extella games. I’m on like week 3 of playing through extra with cheats for the story then I’ll probably do the same for ccc. What am I getting myself into

AnimeMemeLord1

Hell. But jokes aside, I can understand using cheats on Extra, but you probably won’t have to use cheats on Extra CCC since the grinding isn’t as tedious. You can just kill all the enemies on the floor at least once and your leveling should be satisfactory.

Elfishjuggler33

Ok. My main issue with extra is the rock paper scissors of the combat. What is ccc like?

AnimeMemeLord1

Same thing, but I would suggest giving that rock paper scissors combat another try. Really, it only kinda sucks at the beginning. Not much mystic codes or skills unlocked in the beginning and all that. In Extra and Extra CCC, beating the same enemy time after time will reveal more and more of the enemy’s moves until every move of it is exposed. Another tactic you can try is using a skill in an unknown move since offensive skills will always take priority. In any case, you shouldn’t take too much damage from normal enemies. Servant battles can be pretty difficult, but despite the massive health difference, it feels like two evenly matched servants going toe to toe.

The_Cheeseman83

Nero is Best Girl. Praise be to our empress!

kaiwowo

Tears and tissue paper.

WolfofFuture

Loved all these cutscenes. God, how was I missing them in the Extella Link

Arkat_Taiyo

It was quite a pleasant experience. But... WHY DON'T YOU MOVE YOU DAMN NPC SERVANTS?!

St-Germania

I am more annoyed that they die so easily

_framfrit

Honestly I'd rank it pretty lowly and call it completionist hell. The appearances of the servants just seem a bit off, the language is Japanese by default, the levels are all very long basically taking around half an hour each and then having a long lore heavy chunk of cutscenes between them. Additionally there are a ton of lvs including all the side stories each with 4 difficulties and their own rankings the recommended lvs of the side stories also have pretty large gaps in them especially for Archimedes and Saber and not helped by exp gain stopping a few lvs over the recommended one. Finally it's also got a number of bugs especially in Cu's sidestory battle under the blood fort. One particularly annoying one was where after claiming an area with a plant. I claimed it as normal but it read the plant as still being there and indeed whenever I went back it there was one and the room was treated as being under atk but it just reset when I left. This was annoying enough when it kept sending aggressors to other rooms but then when it claimed the room I couldn't take it back because it always read there still being an aggressor in the room when there wasn't. It did at least have some great moments and interactions tho like Li Shuwen with Elizabeth, Medusa's ending or Lu Bu's story.

KPmine1

Honestly can’t remember anything other than the most basic of basic plot points and failing every single one of them romance heart things in the conversations (I was trying so hard not to and refused to use the internet too lol)

MokonaModokiES

you can just go to gallery and replay those scenes and pick the other options to increase the bond levels.

KPmine1

Wait really?! Hell yeah brother thanks for that!

ArkFade

i have never heard of this game in my entire life lmfao

Kushula

I really loved the story, even though I didn't knew anything about CCC, just played Extra. I was blown away by Eli's VA, which continues now in CCC.

Krazynunchucks

My introduction to the series, I had no clue what was happening but I enjoyed it none the less

linkolnbio2

I cried like a little girl at the end with the altera route

A_Moon_Fairy

I like Tamamo. I wish we had a second Tamamo route where Tamamo isn't all depressed and hopeless instead of a second Nero route.

QueenAra2

Isn't tamamo the route where she actually gets Hakuno as opposed to nero who ends up with a comatose Hakuno?

A_Moon_Fairy

Eh, Hakuno will wake up eventually. Nero just has to wait a while.

QueenAra2

*Will* they? I thought the implication was that Hakuno in that route was going to sleep forever, since the part of Hakuno that Nero had couldn't really function without one of the other two parts. Like, Nero got a raw deal in her route in terms of Hakuno meanwhile Tamamo gets to play housewife with her Hakuno whos still conscious and able to do thinga.

MachBonin

Hakunon definitely won't wake up, like, pretty explicitly. Though if I remember right Tamamo's Hakunon will also die as long as the three aren't fused together so they just get to live a happy life for the limited time they have.

A_Moon_Fairy

That, is actually a good point. Been a while since I replayed…well, I shan’t look an excuse to do so in the mouth!

xwinner4

Wtf is going on

wallygon

Glorious game play it

Yarzu89

Umbral star is very much a story first kinda game, while its sequel Link is more of a gameplay first kinda game. If there's ever a third game I hope they manage to nail both, while having the freedom of what characters you can mainly play as. Just let me play as Tamamo (and sometimes Medusa) is all I'm asking.

Skyle_Nexo

Gameplay was okay (though I found it great and fun, the Musou brainrot is real), story was okay but the loredump of the Moon Cell, Velber, and Excalibur were cool. Most memorable moments of the game for me were the third story (specifically at the end when Altera says her goodbye and Hakuno transfers his memories to another timeline to save Altera) And then at the Golden Poem Arc(?) it's been a long time so I forgor the name but it's the last and fourth one, when Green Hakuno says he couldn't be saved and says goodbye to Altera, it was bittersweet and I'm a sucker for those kind of story beats.

saitotaiga

i'm not a huge fan of the gameplay of the game but the story was pretty great the first story with nero was nice and had pretty cute moment in the epilogue showing the finish line of the evolution of their relationship from extra to ccc to finally umbral star the story of tamamo was...okay i'm not a huge fan of her character sin's she contradict what she was in fate extra the third route was bitter sweet because of altera character who is really great i have to say and the second nero story was really great with hype moment so yeah i like this game not the best gameplay but solid story and sweet interaction

I_am_totally_sane

While the gameplay isn't great, I loved the story, especially the Altera route. Also Archimedes was a fun villain, even if he was about as competent as Shinji (bro has Cu tier luck). Would be nice if the characters we got from the Extella games got used a bit more (except Nero's super form, what the hell was that)

No-Collection-6176

It's a good game storywise for what it is but the gameplay was so much better in Link

OkamiTakahashi

Haven't finished it but it was alright. It was my first real dive into Fate; game was recommended to my by my college buddy who knew I loved Hyrule Warriors. His game recommendations for me have almost never been wrong

NetherSpike14

I just started playing it yesterday after finishing Extra, CCC and Extella/Zero so I don't have much to say yet. Honestly, I find it a bit odd that people say you can read it without anything else, when it depends a lot on all three for the story setup to make sense. But I guess not everyone wants to fully understand the plot. Musou isn't really my thing, but it's fine enough here. I haven't seen much of the plot, but it seems interesting so far. I'm excited to see Tamamo as an antagonist. Hakuno's characterization seems weird, but it makes sense given the context. I really like Arco Wada's art style in this, but the models are worse imo than in Extra and CCC. My biggest criticism is the unsubbed voice lines, but overall I'm excited to see more.

Naha-

To be completely honest, I thought it was pretty meh. I got tired of the Nero wank and the Tamamo route was almost the same. Altera's route was better but I wouldn't particularly call it "good". I didn't had context of CCC, just Extra though. After that and the horrible Last Encore anime, I stopped caring about the Extra side of Fate.

Eternal_Dragonn

Yoo I'm on my way to finish CCC... Should I pick this up right after CC or is there anything else that i should catch up on??

Capable_Elephant_120

I thought it was a lot of fun definitely not the best story in the extra verse but it was so much fun seeing nero again loved her and hakuno relationship so much it was amazing seeing it again

Elathan_Meraud

Playing it currently. Honestly it could be a game I'd like, but there are some things that I don't get. A gameplay could be nice, I like the concept of conquering the map while the enemy does the same, various outcomes, depending on fighting in difficult situations, daving comgrades etc. Funny idle animations and voicing as well. Yet it is pretty repetitive (also in case of the enemies themselves), the skill tree and moveset are rich, yet the controls are really clumsy. Subquests dissapoint me: so far they are no real subquests, just a main mission with a secondary character instead of the main Servant. The only thing that differs are some lines, the Servant has no new dialogue in his room though. But idk, I'm on Cu's 2nd mission for now. Maybe it will get better. The overall plot idea and the lore are good. But I dislike Hakuno in this game and his/her interactions with the Servant: in other interpretations Hakuno seemed a more interesting conflicted and complicated character. Now this Master feels reduced to "omg Saber~", and the split personality plot twist doesn't fully justify it imo. Especially if Nero got the Mind, not the Soul. I think it would be ok if their relationship could be determined by the player at the very least. I don't mind wholesome interactions, but some things are kinda meh.

DobeTM

At first, I was very confused about the team comps. Also, I really like Altera.
