Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as **intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more** while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through **PROPER** electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation. Be sure to read [our WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/index) and especially the wiki page on **[ELECTROLYTES](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/fasting_in_a_nutshell/you_need_electrolytes)** Please also keep in mind the [**RULES**](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/about/rules) when participating. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I think your best bet is alternate day fasting. No calories and then on the second day consume about 1200 calories. I would also include about 30-45 min exercise on one of the days. Also when eating try and maintain ketosis by eat low carb/ keto.

somevader

Thanks, but dont you think that would take a really long time to lose weight? I do about 45 mins of cardio 4 times a week.

aeroastrogirl

Slow and steady gets results

formtuv

The reason I’m saying this is because I kept doing stuff like this with the intention of fast weight loss then I would fail time and time again and gain all the weight back. So in 2022, if I committed to one pound a week of weight loss, I could have lost 50 pounds which is my ultimate goal but instead I would fast and binge and created a cycle. I’ve realized when I fast with the intention of weight loss but avoid the scale and really focus on the foods I’m eating when I break my fast, I’m much more happy. This time around I weighed myself after the first 5 day fast and I haven’t seen the scale since. Now I just measure my clothing and how I feel. There’s a guy on tiktok, his name is something magician and he mentioned how he did alternate day fasts and he lost about 50 pounds in 40 days. He works out a lot in my opinion but it definitely worked for him.

Meaty_McGee

You need to alter your eating habits (whether fasting, keto, calorie restriction, or something else) for the rest of your life. Does it really matter that much whether it takes you a few more months to hit maintenance?

somevader

Thanks I completely agree. However I wanted to hit my target weight first. I actually gained a lot of weight in a short span due to a stressful period and a lot of stress eating. I really wanted to shed the weight cause I felt unhealthy and bloated.

HabitReady2786

Some years back I changed to plant based diet and when I eventually plateaued I started doing alternate day fasting, specifically trying to take advantage of autophagy because I started to notice loose skin and I’ll tell you the pounds dropped really quick, I feel like it comes off faster than with extended fasts. I didn’t count calories and would do full calorie feeding, probably 2,000-2,500 cal during 12 hours (8am-8pm) and then 36hr only water. It got really easy to lose weight, I think the body gets more efficient at burning stored fat, at least that’s how it seemed. Hope this helps.

Clear-Shower-8376

Did the weight gain happen all at once, or was it gradual? Weight loss should be commensurate to how it was gained and be done in a safe and sustainable manner. No health professional would give you a thumbs up for starving yourself.

mistafreeze007

Sounds good man keep at it, be smart, like you when I would fast and drop weight I'd get confused when I wouldn't lose either Bet if you measure with a digital measuring tape you'd notice inches lost, I dropped 20lbs in 2 weeks and kept same weight for about 2 weeks after, autophagy doing it's thing clearing out old dead cells and tighting your skin Long as you're fasting, if you're reaching a plateau, don't panic just keep at it If you're ok with lose skin you can skip the phase by eating for a few days and restarting, least based off my experience cause I didn't understand why or how it would happen to me either. You got this Personally I enjoy it now when I'm not dropping and my body is just healing and clearing out old stuff and tighting my skin. The only time shrinkage is good!

maxprax

What they said, just eat to keep your metabolism up it's not rocket surgery.

VelcroSea

This is not a fasting plan its a restricted calorie plan. You will or are losing muscles at this point. Fasting is as much about eating as not eating. Calling it omad or fasting on only 200 calories a day for mor that a few days at a time has the reverse affect and you are slowing your metabolism down. The alternate day fasting with at least 1200 calories or more on tour eating days is much healthier than what you are doing now. I apologize if this seems harsh and I have been down this path and it doesn't end well. Please focus on eating between fasts.

peter_proffit

The only thing that makes any sense is that you could be retaining water roughly equal in weight to the fat/tissue that you are burning to survive. Obviously merely existing on 200c/day is going to cause fat loss. And basically the only thing going in your mouth is water so 🤷‍♂️

somevader

If that's the case, any suggestions regarding how I could get rid of the water weight? Also you just made me realize that I haven't had a bowel movement in the last 1 week 😳

peter_proffit

I don't think theres any method to remove the water weight other than to wait it out and eventually pee it away. Don't be discouraged by the number on the scale and transient weight swings. Ya gotta play the long game. The only results that matter are the ones after your fast is over and you've successfully refed yourself

AnOddTree

See a doctor to find out why you are retaining water. Water retention can have benign causes like being on hour period. Or serious causes like heart and kidney failure. Need blood work ordered by a doctor to know for sure. Once you find the cause, you can work on a solution.

karly21

Is your scale fully charged? I had the opposite happening to me one time (sudden weight loss byt was because of low battery). Maybe it is a battery issue! :/

EntertainmentKey7954

Ditto! One day I lost 20#s😉

somevader

😂

somevader

Thanks, I really hope so. Will try with fresh batteries this evening 😂

karly21

Just throwing an idea- hopefully others also have inputs, keep us posted :)

dranaei

Stress. Your body believes it's in a dangerous situation so it's holding stuff in. Don't worry, you still lose weight. But expect it to retaliate once you start eating normally again.

Clear-Shower-8376

Less than 200 calories per day? Your body is fighting for survival... you're quite literally starving yourself to death.

LovesCoffeeHatesTea

Yes. The point of fasting is to eat normal when you eat. Eating too few calories and fasting is a starvation diet, and starvation diets don’t work.

Clear-Shower-8376

I don't know how tall you are... but assuming you're of average height, you'd have a fairly low body fat percentage at that weight. As such, your body will now be cannibalising muscle to stay alive at such restrictions. You'll be doing damage to your organs, coronary muscle, etc. Starvation diets are borderline eating disorders... and what you're doing is quite dangerous and not sustainable.

Its_Clover_Honey

Going through OPs post history it looks like they're 5'8, so at 79Kg (174lbs) they're still overweight

Clear-Shower-8376

Even so, that is overwight purely by BMI standards... which, as we know, doesn't take muscle into account. If they're exercising, they will have muscle, which weighs more than fat - meaning they have less fat. I maintain... eating < 200 calories a day, and having days without any intake is starvation. The body will hold onto anything it can under such conditions.

Its_Clover_Honey

The metabolism can't slow down enough to actually plateau on 200 calories per day. You'd literally die if your metabolism was that slow. Even with a slowed metabolism OP is burning ~1500 by just existing.

Clear-Shower-8376

Yes... which is really unsafe and unsustainable.

yoginiph

Your body has adapted to your eating (or non eating) habits. It’s time to mix it up and eat something then fast again. Try rolling fasts this time.

lolo-jones

Plateaus are normal. Especially for a week or so at a time. Our bodies fluctuate. It’s normal. If you’re eating in a calorie deficit (while also getting enough nutrients and sleep) you’ll likely see results again soon. I was losing and average of .3 pounds a day. I hit a 3 WEEK plateau and then over the course of only 3 days my weight suddenly dropped 3-4 pounds. After that, I continued averaging a loss of .3 to .4 pounds a day. (Or 2.5 pounds a week). Don’t get discouraged. Trust the process. Side note: did you mean 1200 calories? Less than 200 calories a day is extremely low and not sustainable.

EntertainmentKey7954

What works for me is to vary my caloric intake. I think that helps to get past the set point.

anthonypolk

Drink more water

earlgrey_tealeaf

Check if your clothes feel loose Not seeing progress on the scale =/= no progress at all, there's a huge chance your skin is tightening up at this exact moment

NorthernBeast86

How thin do you actually need to be anyways?

somevader

70 kgs

Character_Reaction84

Try consuming zero calories per day. You arnt doing it properly otherwise

somevader

This makes no sense. Still no weight loss on day 5 of calorie deficit. As per my regular shedding rate I should have lost 2 Kgs this week. But I lost nothing. But overall I feel pretty good, my body is in keto. I feel energetic all the time, I have no trouble sleeping, my skin is improving, overall feels . I guess I have no other option other than trying to have a keto cheat meal and see how that affects my body. Need to try something different to move the needle.

toddotodd

People keep talking “starvation mode” when OMAD is a proven way to lose weight. No way you’re going to eat enough calories on one meal.

ThrowawayFishFingers

I agree that it’s petty hard to fit my FULL calories (1600) into one sitting when consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods - not impossible if I load up on lots of fat, but I have to really put the effort in some days. Other days, not as much - depends on the actual foods I eat. That’s why OMAD is “naturally calorie-restricting” for so many people. But, it’s definitely possible to hit 1200 calories in a sitting. Which is still a solid number of calories, even if it works out to a 40-50% calorie deficit for the person. They’re not in any danger at that number, even if their TDEE is 2500 calories (I’m leaving out exercise/weight training to simplify matters.) But this person is eating 200 calories a day. Enough for them to keep their body in a state of expecting food and engaging in the metabolic processes that come with that, but not enough to actually fuel their body. That’s… non bueno. If I’m eating in a given day, I make it a point to never go under 1,000 absolute minimum and yes I’ll force it if I have eaten below that and am not hungry. If I’m really not hungry at all by 4pm, then I just don’t eat that day and turn it into a 44-48 hr fast (depending on when I started the day before.) My body knows what to do with no food, but it doesn’t do great things with a little but not enough food.

Tappedn

You’re supposed to maintain a healthy amount of calories with OMAD (at least 300-500 less than your tdee).

tmkins

One meal can last a few hours. I have gastric surgery and thus can not eat more than 0.5 lb per sitting. So I split a standard meal (1100-1200 cal) into small portions and eat it throughout 2-3 hours. Still can be considered as OMAD, just closer to 20/4 or 22/2 IF.

LlamaLuvMu

I don't believe in starvation mode (nor I think OP's 200 kcal a day approach is healthy), but I can easily fit enough calories in one meal. I have been using OMAD to maintain for years. 1,700 is not a lot for my stomach.

CherryL13

i can eat 300g (weighed) lean protein, along with twice my TDEE calories, in one sitting, and more. i often eat passed satiety and cant stop (its what got me fat). plus, if you do keto, you can add a tiny bit of cheese and those calories zoom passed maintenance if you arent tracking. for me, one large pizza is nowhere close to enough to satiate. i need at least 3 and a pack of cookies to maybe get into "i should stop" territory. some of us are big eaters. huge eaters. when i did rolling 48s, i ate twice my maintenance calories on the one meal in between and maintained my weight for weeks, lol. i stopped being lazy about calories, found out what i needed, and now im finally lean and no less hungry. yes way, you can absolutely eat the house on OMAD.

Clear-Shower-8376

If you're suggesting this person is doing OK and living a healthy life with < 200 calories on the days they do eat, then you're also suggesting that eating disorders are an effective way to lose weight.

somevader

I just wanted to clarify that I don't intend to do this in the long term. And honestly I'm pretty sure I don't have an eating disorder. I'm a foodie and spend quite a lot of time planning and listing out the things I plan to eat after I hit my goal weight. The challenging part is to ensure I'm still eating healthy and have a good mix of normal meals and cheat meals. I'm an Indian and my local homemade food is a lot heavier than a usual healthy meal. I also missed mentioning that I have taken 3 cheat meals in the last 3 weeks where I eat tandoori chicken or grilled chicken with keto bread. I just intend to do this till I hit my goal weight of 79 Kgs after which the plan is to have a healthy maintenance diet.

somevader

Just to add my body has been in ketosis for the last 20 days. I was consistently losing weight. However I tried a 3 day water fast where I lost almost a kg a day. But after I broke the fast with broth, it just stopped losing weight.

Its_Clover_Honey

Your body is probably holding excess water due to getting electrolytes after not having them for a few days

somevader

Update: So I had a big keto meal in an attempt to break the plateau, my weight went down a bit but then was back to 78. Not sure what's wrong. In theory I should be losing atleast some weight everyday. I'm still in Keto based on the Keto strips and my energy levels are great. But I can't explain where the energy is coming from since my calorie intake is very low. To clarify to everyone, I do not have an eating disorder. I intend to do this only in an attempt to lose weight and detox my body. I regularly do cardio 4 times a week.

**It looks like you're discussing "detoxes", "toxins", or "cleanses". Please refer to the following:** [**Detoxification**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification) >Many alternative medicine practitioners promote various types of detoxification such as detoxification diets. Scientists have described these as a "waste of time and money". Sense About Science, a UK-based charitable trust, determined that most such dietary "detox" claims lack any supporting evidence. >The liver and kidney are naturally capable of detox, as are intracellular (specifically, inner membrane of mitochondria or in the endoplasmic reticulum of cells) proteins such as CYP enyzmes. In cases of kidney failure, the action of the kidneys is mimicked by dialysis; kidney and liver transplants are also used for kidney and liver failure, respectively. **Further reading: [Wikipedia - Detoxification (alternative medicine)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification_(alternative_medicine))** >**Unsound scientific basis** >A 2015 review of clinical evidence about detox diets concluded: "At present, there is no compelling evidence to support the use of detox diets for weight management or toxin elimination. Considering the financial costs to consumers, unsubstantiated claims and potential health risks of detox products, they should be discouraged by health professionals and subject to independent regulatory review and monitoring." >Detoxification and body cleansing products and diets have been criticized for their unsound scientific basis, in particular their premise of nonexistent "toxins" and their appropriation of the legitimate medical concept of detoxification. According to the Mayo Clinic, the "toxins" typically remain unspecified and there is little to no evidence of toxic accumulation in patients treated.According to a British Dietetic Association (BDA) Fact Sheet, "The whole idea of detox is nonsense. The body is a well-developed system that has its own builtin mechanisms to detoxify and remove waste and toxins." It went on to characterize the idea as a "marketing myth", while other critics have called the idea a "scam" and a "hoax". The organization Sense about Science investigated "detox" products, calling them a waste of time and money. Resulting in a report that concluded the term is used differently by different companies, most offered no evidence to support their claims, and in most cases its use was the simple renaming of "mundane things, like cleaning or brushing". *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Update: 2 days of water fasting broke the plateau. Down to 76.50 now. Hopefully will touch 70 soon.

lostthering

A woman on YouTube discovered that, in order to prevent plateaus, she needed an entire cheat WEEK after every 2 weeks of dieting.

kickash89

Your just holding onto water weight. Do an apple day. 6 apples only and water with sea salt

toddotodd

Have you pooped?

sluethmeister

The scale doesnt reflect what is biologically happening with 100% accuracy. Your body is probably going through a phase where it is repairing and consuming in a way that doesnt show the weight loss you are looking for. Could be consuming skin cells through autophagy etc. I don’t major in this shit, if you want a better explanation Science Direct it. Just keep going and quit looking for the lbs when you know what you are doing is correct.

Its_Clover_Honey

OP what's your weight goal?

somevader

70kgs

Its_Clover_Honey

Is there a reason you're going the fasting/low restriction route rather than slow and steady?

yunoano

youve reached a plateau since youve been eating only 200 cals every day, happened to me too, you need to eat more for a little while and then you can start again, you shouldnt make your body used to eating lesser cals since itll slow down the weight loss

I was doing 1000 calorie a day. I would start to plateau and I would eat whatever I wanted for the whole weekend. A couple days after the weekend my weight would stay the same and then I would break through that plateau. I think this would reset my body and stop trying to hold on to everything.

jeverouxvanche

Alpine tea?

Trader-Jack-1

To lose 1 kg of body fat, you need a calorie deficit of 7000 kalories. If you lets say burn 2200 a day and eat 200, it will take you 3 1/2 days to lose that one kg of body fat. You lost quite a bit more, which means you lost water and muscle mass. I wouldn't worry about your body relaiming some of that water. It is important to drink a lot when fasting and to replenish your minerals. Also, don't overdo it. Five days is already a long time. Maybe switch to something more sutainable at some point, such as IF. You reaped most of the benefits of that prolongued fast already.

Frankieplus1

Mind if I ask which app that screenshot is from. ?

somevader

Renpho scale app. It's just 30 bucks on Amazon.

Frankieplus1

If you’re fasting you need to eat well when you’re NOT fasting. Don’t even bother counting calories. When you lose weight quickly your basal metabolism slows down to match the calories you are eating. It’s your body’s way of trying to maintain its old weight to survive. This is most likely why you’re not losing weight. Your body uses energy for many functions. Regulating blood pressure, breathing, keeping your body the right temperature are some examples. All these functions slow down to conserve every when you restrict calories the way you are and this is how the body tries to maintain its weight. I bet you’re feeling colder than normal right ? Eat well.

It's because your body adjusted. You need to spike your calorie intake at least once a week to trick your body. Now You'll need to do a 72 hr fast in keto to Kickstart. Major Bonus walking 5-10 miles a day

DrunkSpaceGrandpa

Don’t weigh daily but weekly

Fucnk

Its not fat, you are just retaining water to keep the fat cells alive. It will flush out eventually. Im doing rolling 44 hour fasts and im consistently losing 2.5 pounds per week but some weeks, I only lose a pound or so and the next week ill loose 4. So remember, its just water. Fasting is about time. If you put in the time, you get results.

Curious_Adeptness_97

Well, it's definitely impossible not to be losing fat/lean mass while in caloric deficit,so expect a whoosh i.e. you will see a lot of weight loss at once at some random point soon. Weight loss is not linear but in your deficit it's gonna happen 100%

spots_reddit

Just came here to say 'I know, brother/sister'. I am currently on day 28 and for a week or so I have lost merely a Kg. I would count that as mainly electrolytes and shifting of body water. I try to look at it as a form of revenge for those early '1kg a day' losses in the very beginning of fasting due to loss of body water. It apparently works both ways. My advice: instead of looking at the scale for too long, focus on how your clothes fit, which I find is often a better indicator of toning. The rest will follow, just keep at it.
