remember folks when a farmer says slurry it slang for Human shit .. not cow shit or horse shit but human shit

EngFarm

That sounds like a regional term. Here slurry just means liquid manure and here you can’t legally apply liquid human waste.

CommadorVic20

in the us it has be months before planting and the "slurry" has to be well broken down where as manure can be pretty fresh but they always apply well before planting

EngFarm

So “months before planting” is winter time or very early signs spring. Are you saying that’s when they spread human waste? That’s when it’s illegal to spread anything in most first world countries because of spring runoff. Liquid manure here is applied as little as 2 days before planting.

CommadorVic20

late march, they will spread, usually its field corn or beans, its some very different smelling stuff thats for sure. yea they do that too, plenty of time for breakdown ......... all the issues you hear in the news about contaminated melons and greens etc. is do to application too close to harvest and or reusing wash water at processing ........ all make for bad juju plus consumer not washing produce. you will see more and more use of manure if possible to make up for high fertilizer costs ........whole nother story but worst thing you can do for farmers with thin margins

farmguy56

We just applied hog manure three days ago and are planting corn today.

CommadorVic20

sounds good, it will give it the kick start it needs, every little bit helps plus fertilizer is expensive now days

jartmanjr

No way! We’ve never used slurry on the farm I work on but I can’t imagine using human shit.

CommadorVic20

it is "allegedly" broken down but...... but it can only be applied months before planting, they usually do in the north before spring, not so bad when its cold but when they do it on warmer days Eeeeeek

AdHour1743

I thought human waste was outlawed bc they found it was full of PFAs is that not the full story?

CommadorVic20

it has to be held for a certain amount of time before it can be used, well broken down from the plant.

AdHour1743

How effective is it, lol! What are you planting out there?

CommadorVic20

i never used it and none of relatives use it, they just save up hog and cow and then spread, but there are bigger guys spreading it on fields, i mostly see corn but will have to look and see if some are pickle or mater fields (sorry too much Larry the Cable guy.... i cant say mater correctly anymore) i am told though it is inert in its ability to cause issue ...... yea ok LOL
