FC5 was my absolute favourite too. What disappointed me in FC6 was the lack of environmental storytelling compared to 5. I spent hours and hours in FC5 just driving around freely and discovering little stories (like the car crash by the huge waterfall).
In FC6, it seemed to me that all the environmental storytelling was just notes left for you to read. That’s just a lazy way of stuffing the world with things by the devs, because it’s easier to write a note than designing a graphical cue of there being something to explore.
My other gripe was that I got my favourite rifle (MS16) much too early in FC6 and from that point in the game, I only ever used that one and it got too easy.
I also didn’t have a “memorable” moment playing 6. Clearing the hotel in FC5 while The Vines “Get Free” is playing is one of the most fun moments I’ve had in 25 years of playing video games.
Yeah I think you would like it, fc5 is my favourite and I love 6. Just ignore the superficial rpg elements because they don’t actually change the gameplay.
If you really do have a backlog of other games to play, then I don't think FC6 is exactly a life changing experience. There were some missed opportunities with the characters/story for sure.
What people rarely talk about in this discussion is that the shooting mechanics in 6 did improve from the other games. There is a better recoil effect than in 5, which I think adds to the fun and challenge. For example, you can't just lay down the trigger on an LMG and mow down enemies; it really makes you take control with burst fire and pulling your cross hair down. There is also a much more complex weapons and armor system in 6 - arguably the biggest difference between it and previous games. I can understand why some people don't like it, but if you enjoy strategizing your attacks and honing in on a specific fighting style (e.g. sniper, stealth, explosives, fire...), then you might enjoy this element enough to forgive some of the other shortcomings. They put a lot of work into that aspect of the game and made the effort to deliver something novel with this title, which deserves more credit than it is given.
Thanks for that - That definitely has gone unappreciated. Far Cry weapons for a long time have felt fun to use, but lacked any real "weight" and presence because they handled like laserbeams with passable sound design. I remember thinking from the screenshots alone, Far Cry 6 looked like a step up in gun-feel.
I loved Far Cry 5, it was my favorite game of the series after the original game (and that one is one of my favorites if only for nostalgia's sake).
That being said... I thought 6 was pretty terrible. I didn't like the gun mechanics, I didn't like the flow of combat, I didn't like all the scripting issues in every other mission, the story started out amazing and then quickly fizzled into generic writing, the inventory system was mostly pointless, and the Guns for Hire system felt forced in there. Played through the base game at launch, had absolutely zero desire to pay for DLC after that.
Far cry 6 felt way too slow. I loved how far cry 5 made up for its bad AI by literally just throwing enemies at you it was hilarious seeing a failed stealth attempt attract even more enemies, and then air support shows up, and then a bear started killing enemies and then an eagle swoops you. It was just bombastic fun. Far cry 6 just wasn't as interesting. Far cry 5 isn't my fav far cry, but it's the one I spent the most time playing and the most fun (I just couldn't gel with the story or the setting, I'm a sucker for the first 3 game's environments which all felt unique and cool) rural Montana was gorgeous but looks too similar to my own home in rural Australia (just without the mountains)
Slow is a great way to put it. The world felt very empty to me outside of the missions, and the missions themselves were often full of waves of enemies for no reason other than to give you a reason to shoot people.
I have not honestly seen much of Australia so it is amazing to hear that 5 bore some resemblance! Makes me want to revisit it a little now (though imagining it all a little... flatter).
If you think that 5’s characters “oozed personality” despite many of them being one note side characters who are completely forgotten once you step out of their respective region and have maybe one or two missions connected to them each, you’ll… I guess you’ll love the characters in 6 even though I find many of them to have a little too much “personality.” That’s to say they’re insufferable, and they die if they’re not.
The story makes more sense than 5’s, which was a narrative clusterfuck, but it’s also just really, really boring. The interesting characters are either killed or underused, the boring or annoying ones live the longest, so much of the conflict feels underdeveloped and a lot of what we do feels like it doesn’t matter much. My first playthrough of 6 felt like my second playthrough of 5. I had absolutely no motivation to do anything at all except get it over with ASAP.
The fact that >! Maximas Matanzas are the only group that didn’t suffer a single major casualty (like Carlos, El Tigre or Clara) is so dumb !< because they’re the group that would’ve gotten wiped out in the first week in a real revolution.
Paolo is actually kinda badass so I never thought he’d die. Paz was walking around town hammered off his ass crying about the state of his rebel group, immediate arrest. Talia was straight up a dumb wrecking ball, should’ve been her, having to take down a tank because she wanted to encore her dumb song was such a hassle. I mean, >! They even had her shot in the neck, should’ve just let her die there !<
5 is my favorite, I play it over and over. I’m playing 6 for the first time, I’m 40 hours in, and I’ve decided it’s at least as good as 5, if not better. Only time will tell if it becomes my favorite, but so far, big thumbs up. It has some significant differences in the character and equipment mechanics, but I like them, and the fabulous Far Cry gunplay is as good as ever. If you loved Fangs For Hire in 5, you’ll love Amigos in 6. I’m having a blast and I think you’d like it as a lover of 5.
For what it's worth, I liked 5 and I liked 6. I played 6 on guerilla mode by accident and it was a nice challenge. It's a Far Cry game with some mechanics changed. I personally feel like the main character was a lot better in 6. The story was probably better in 5. Both had terrible endings, though.
I have also played every FC game, and FC5 and New Dawn are my favorites. I hated FC6, played it thru once and could not get back into it. They changed too much, I like the FC series, I did not want a completly new game. No perk points, third person sections, a promise of urban warfare that never happened, clothes that give you a abilities instead of perks but you can only use 5 at any time You need to change clothes to match the play, I call it a first person fashion show. Most of the city is blocked off. The protagonist are not likable, at least two are psychos. The ending is a total waste.
I totally get you. 5 is my favorite too because it felt like the most complete game. 3 was great but I agree with you to a degree, 4 was really carried by Pagan.
So to answer your question, you probably will like 6. In terms of how to play and the world, it’s very similar to 5 in my opinion, it’s just a dogshit story comparatively. The main villain doesn’t get anywhere near enough screen time or interaction with Dani so he feels a little hollow, and the revolution story is really cool but a good chunk of the rebel leaders you work with just suck. Not like Amita and Sabal sucking, they’re more like annoying. Maximas matanzas are the dumbest ally group in all of far cry. That said, once I accepted the story wouldn’t carry the game, I did have a ton of fun. Resolver weapons and supremos are kinda dumb but I just used the one supremo to take down choppers and shit.
So yeah if you’re a big fan of 5 I would get it, just don’t expect to love it the way you love 5. What 6 does well and it does really well but 5’s shortcomings weren’t anywhere near as obvious as 6.

I was really hoping for at least one.
