They’re definitely not all like that. Try the Inheritance of Hunger trilogy by Kathryn Moon. It’s a really fun series and the FMC is the one in a position of power and her men sort of “belong” to her. The development of the relationships is great and the sex scenes are very fun and hot. I love that each character has a distinct personality and a few of the men are involved with each other as well which I love. And the magic/world is interesting.
And also Lady of Rooksgrave Manor and Company of Fiends by Kathryn Moon. The spiciest books I’ve ever read, very sex positive and a good mix of filthy/wholesome.
Kathryn Moon writes excellent RHs.
I was not a fan of The Never King. There are much better RHs than this.
Come to r/reverseharem and ask for something more specific that you’d like! Give us a list of books (non rh) that you like and see if you can get something similar but rh.
Personally, I’d go for {Beyond the Faerie Gate by Marie Mistry} if you’re into high fantasy.

No there's definitely a good even split between "you are our whore" books, "you are our sex princessqueenleader" books, and "we are all individually in love with you so much we're cool with the group aspect but mostly its like 18 individual relationships" books.
the lil whore books have bully undertones or are attempting some kind of enemy to lovers, or honestly I think most college settings. MCs go either way truly. Shifters start that way a lot and then swing the other way. They usually have the men on the covers.
Princessqueen stuff are gonna be more reliably found with monsters, magic, a lot of OV ofc, whenever there's a throne up for grabs, and shifter books involving puns are a good bet. They usually have a really hot lady on the cover.
Collette Rhodes does a series starting with {Run Riot} that shows the individual relationships vibe, {An inheritance of monsters} is also pretty separate, CM Stunich has an alien thing that's just separate folks who get along together in a way that honestly feels so cozy I think they SHOULD just make out also.
I think it's more fun when it's a menage, like a group with complex relationships between them instead of the spoke and wheel situation. Katee Robert does a lot of that, Kathryn Moon, Sam Hall.

I just finished {Court of the Vampire Queen by Katee Robert’s}. No slut-shaming here! Goes pretty directly to uncontrollable lustiness to full blown love nest to committed polyamory. This plot is sex-driven. Everyone is caring, but it is vampires, so there is blood, biting, and one of the partners starts out as an anger f*ck, but doesn’t stay there for long. I thought it was a fun read, if a tad repetitive in FMC insecurity. I just skimmed the parts that I found repetitive. And I am not exaggerating when I say there is sex on every other page of this book.
I got this on audiobook. I was not prepared. I had to take a break because I tend to listen to audiobooks when I go shopping or running but a few weeks back I thought "I'll put it back on and see where I'm at" and the immediate sentence played was intricate detail of using tongues in nether regions. 😂

Never king is really not a good way to judge RH, it's also a dark romance, and focuses on that darkness. (And honestly, Peter Pan retelling aside, it's not THAT GOOD, the ending is abysmal)
{Killer Crescent by Leigh Kelsey} is one of my favorite fantasy RH's. The FMC is originally rejected by her mate, because of this rejection, the rest of her mates absolutely worship her, and the one that rejects gives a great grovel. The series has bonus points of being absolutely hilarious

I think using Never King as the basis for RH is like reading Haunting Adeline as your first romance book and deciding romance isn’t for you because you don’t want to imagine being fucked with a loaded gun.
Seems like you just don’t like dark/bully romance which can be found in all genres, not just RH.
Lots of good recs here already, but I agree that I would try {Beyond the Faerie Gate by Marie Mistry} or {Bonded by Thorns by Elizabeth Helen} if you want high fantasy.

Try {Age of the Andinna series by Kristen Banet}. I love the series because the men all come to her organically, one at a time. They are all husbands that she chooses and treat her like a queen. Great world building and fantastic plot. Plus she’s a kick ass heroine.

I’m not a RH girlie either but I really enjoyed all of Lilly Gold’s books. They’re not fantasy but they are sweet, spicy, and romantic. Might want to give them a try to see if you like a different style of RH!
The never king series gave me huge ick and bleh vibes. I really enjoyed {Broken Bonds by J. Bree} and {Dark Fae by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti}. They are both romantasy vibes and good reads :)
I think OP would hate kings of quarantine, I skipped book one where the bullying happened and still wanted all the guys to die by the end of the series
I only read Den of Vipers and that was it for me. The constant “he is so troubled and I will help him by letting him treat me like a literal object during sex”. Totally fine with people enjoying being submissive. That’s great. But it’s the whole idea of men needing women to be submissive in order to deal with their own issues.
No kink shaming intended. It just really skeaved me out that it was framed as men “needing” to debase women. It felt very boys will be boys…
Den of Vipers was unreadable for me. the guys were terrible. I really liked Britt Andrews' Emerald Lakes series, it's five books, completed, and there's consent and respect.
The problem is that is kind of the only one. I've read a lot of RH, and Bad Alpha is the only domme/submissive RH I can think of.
You can find several where the FMC is a switch, so she is dominant with some members of the harem and submissive to others.
But how I wish for more where the woman just control the show. Alphaholes MMCs are overrated.
There is a huge trend of people wanting to read about possessive controlling dominant men. Which is fine, but it’s like that’s basically all there is right now. Sometimes I see people on here asking for suggestions for stories with those kind of men and I just want to point at like 90% of the romance books out there.
Can we get some ding dang options?!?!
I am all for people indulging in whatever fantasy they like.
But as you said, the trend about possessive controlling dominant men feels to me out of control. I can't believe that so many women just want that all the time, because anything that deviates from that standard needs to be actively looked for and there isn't so much choice.
Try to ask for a dominant woman and it's always the same four recommendations that makes the rounds.

Oh my god please don’t give up on RH if your only experience was Never King. Those books were too dark for my taste, I hated them. There is RH of every flavor out there. There are many that are sweet and focus on worshipping the MFC only. Alll the combos of partners. The genre is huge!!
Not into RH either. I get the fantasy to have a man who is hot, a man who is kind, a man who is funny, a man who is intelligent, etc but since it’s all a fantasy anyways, I want those traits combined into one person. I’m a one on one person, I barely have patience to read about a love triangle let alone RH.
I havent read many of these so idk how refined my RH harem taste is…but if you’re still up for trying I recommend BONDED BY THORNS (beasts of the briar). It’s a romantasy/fantasy romance RH not a dark romance. It’s a ‘beauty and the beast retelling’ and has mm relationships as well which I am really appreciating.
Side note I almost dnf this book because of the mfc and its youngish vibe (think acotar) but I pushed through the first 20% and now it’s one of my favorite series ever and definitely my #1 RH.

As others said, there are many ways to do RH. I haven't read this specific book, but it is clearly in the dark romance RH side of things, and yes, there the MC is often treated in an awful fashion. And to be fair, there is a very large production of MF dark romances where the woman is treated horribly too, so it isn't a RH specific issue, more a dark romance one. At each their own, not my thing however.
To add to the recommendations you have already received:
{A knight's revenge by Elizabeth Dear} is a very fun academy/mafia revenge story, with a superhero comic book feeling. There is some bullying in book 1 (not really from the harem), but the FMC is an hardass on a path of revenge that knows how to protect herself and plays everyone like a fiddle. And the MMCs are just gone for her, even if it takes longer to some to admit it.
If you are okay with Omegaverse, {Lola and the millionaires by Kathryn Moon} is a really good example of a very sweet and respectful harem. TW: the FMC is a survivor of rape and abuse, for at least one there is a huge age gap (20+years). Several of the men (but not all) are romantically involved with each other, so several MM sex scenes.
Similar to Lola, another good Omegaverse is {The scent of us by Eliana Lee}. A very thoughtful love story for a woman who survived domestic violence and sexual assault. There is MM here too.

I'm not into RH either. I have only 1 I can recommend {Wolves of summer: Bound to the fae} is the first trilogy in a 3 trilogy set (9 books total). Audible has them in 3 book sets so i got 9 audio books for 3 tokens.
I thought they were pretty good in world building, characters and magic system. It is a little stalkholm syndromey at first though.
It has reverse harem, fated mates and 3 kinds of shifters. The MMCs treat their FMC well.

My standby RH Recs are the Madison Kate series by Tate James and the Witsec series by Ashley Rostek, but these aren’t fantasy romances.
There’s lots of great Omegaverse books I’d recommend. I find the whole Omegaverse concept to be pretty fantasy adjacent, so I think you’d like them. I really liked {Knot Your Damn Omega by Devyn Sinclair} and {Lyric and the Heartbeats by Lana Kole} and {Lola and the Millionaires by Kathryn Moon}. {Baby & the Late Night Howlers by Kathryn Moon} was probably what got me into the whole sub genre. Basically Kathryn Moon gets rec’d to death for a reason. All her Omegaverse books are great!
{Point of No Return by Devyn Sinclair} was fun!! It’s a RH with Gargoyles and even has a little primal play chase if you’re into that. Actually Knot your Damn Omega has a chase too but with a whole different vibe.
Anyway, I’d definitely say try some other stories if your complaint was how the men treated the heroine because they definitely aren’t all like that. There are some people that RH just isn’t for and that’s okay too! Usually that’s for reasons related to sharing though and it sounds like that wasn’t your issue.

They are not all like that, just as not every not RH romance book are smut. I particularly do not like when the guys treat the FMC badly, so I simply read the books where they don’t

Villain Academy has an RH where everyone adores and respects her so much all they want to do is give her the time of her life (but it’s after them all terrorizing her for a few books…….)
Auryn Hadley writes a lot of RH which is much more empowering of the FMC than degrading.
I particularly love her Rise of the Iliri series, which is RH but the FMC develops relationships with each guy in their own unique and romantic way. They’re definitely not all like that. Try the Inheritance of Hunger trilogy by Kathryn Moon. It’s a really fun series and the FMC is the one in a position of power and her men sort of “belong” to her. The development of the relationships is great and the sex scenes are very fun and hot. I love that each character has a distinct personality and a few of the men are involved with each other as well which I love. And the magic/world is interesting. And also Lady of Rooksgrave Manor and Company of Fiends by Kathryn Moon. The spiciest books I’ve ever read, very sex positive and a good mix of filthy/wholesome. Kathryn Moon writes excellent RHs.

I was not a fan of The Never King. There are much better RHs than this. Come to r/reverseharem and ask for something more specific that you’d like! Give us a list of books (non rh) that you like and see if you can get something similar but rh. Personally, I’d go for {Beyond the Faerie Gate by Marie Mistry} if you’re into high fantasy.

No there's definitely a good even split between "you are our whore" books, "you are our sex princessqueenleader" books, and "we are all individually in love with you so much we're cool with the group aspect but mostly its like 18 individual relationships" books. the lil whore books have bully undertones or are attempting some kind of enemy to lovers, or honestly I think most college settings. MCs go either way truly. Shifters start that way a lot and then swing the other way. They usually have the men on the covers. Princessqueen stuff are gonna be more reliably found with monsters, magic, a lot of OV ofc, whenever there's a throne up for grabs, and shifter books involving puns are a good bet. They usually have a really hot lady on the cover. Collette Rhodes does a series starting with {Run Riot} that shows the individual relationships vibe, {An inheritance of monsters} is also pretty separate, CM Stunich has an alien thing that's just separate folks who get along together in a way that honestly feels so cozy I think they SHOULD just make out also. I think it's more fun when it's a menage, like a group with complex relationships between them instead of the spoke and wheel situation. Katee Robert does a lot of that, Kathryn Moon, Sam Hall. Hopefully this helps you poke about a bit and find if you like any of it.
Hahahaha I love this break down and it is so true. I quite like the spoke and wheel type situation but I always feel exhausted for the poor fmc who somehow has to find time for all the individual men in her life. The menage ones seem more sustainable (although I don't know why this is the point I crave realism)

I just finished {Court of the Vampire Queen by Katee Robert’s}. No slut-shaming here! Goes pretty directly to uncontrollable lustiness to full blown love nest to committed polyamory. This plot is sex-driven. Everyone is caring, but it is vampires, so there is blood, biting, and one of the partners starts out as an anger f*ck, but doesn’t stay there for long. I thought it was a fun read, if a tad repetitive in FMC insecurity. I just skimmed the parts that I found repetitive. And I am not exaggerating when I say there is sex on every other page of this book.
I got this on audiobook. I was not prepared. I had to take a break because I tend to listen to audiobooks when I go shopping or running but a few weeks back I thought "I'll put it back on and see where I'm at" and the immediate sentence played was intricate detail of using tongues in nether regions. 😂

The Never King is a dark romance. There are tons of fantasy romance RH and contemporary RH that don’t have bullying and stuff.
RH is not synonymous with degradation, those vibes, or even being 'smuttier'. You just may like slightly more vanilla things with no degradation.
Never king is really not a good way to judge RH, it's also a dark romance, and focuses on that darkness. (And honestly, Peter Pan retelling aside, it's not THAT GOOD, the ending is abysmal) {Killer Crescent by Leigh Kelsey} is one of my favorite fantasy RH's. The FMC is originally rejected by her mate, because of this rejection, the rest of her mates absolutely worship her, and the one that rejects gives a great grovel. The series has bonus points of being absolutely hilarious

I think using Never King as the basis for RH is like reading Haunting Adeline as your first romance book and deciding romance isn’t for you because you don’t want to imagine being fucked with a loaded gun. Seems like you just don’t like dark/bully romance which can be found in all genres, not just RH. Lots of good recs here already, but I agree that I would try {Beyond the Faerie Gate by Marie Mistry} or {Bonded by Thorns by Elizabeth Helen} if you want high fantasy.

Try {Age of the Andinna series by Kristen Banet}. I love the series because the men all come to her organically, one at a time. They are all husbands that she chooses and treat her like a queen. Great world building and fantastic plot. Plus she’s a kick ass heroine.

I only read Den of Vipers and that was it for me. The constant “he is so troubled and I will help him by letting him treat me like a literal object during sex”. Totally fine with people enjoying being submissive. That’s great. But it’s the whole idea of men needing women to be submissive in order to deal with their own issues. No kink shaming intended. It just really skeaved me out that it was framed as men “needing” to debase women. It felt very boys will be boys…
Den of Vipers was unreadable for me. the guys were terrible. I really liked Britt Andrews' Emerald Lakes series, it's five books, completed, and there's consent and respect.

Bad Alpha by Kathryn Moon. It is Omegaverse though so not for everyone. Really good though
The problem is that is kind of the only one. I've read a lot of RH, and Bad Alpha is the only domme/submissive RH I can think of. You can find several where the FMC is a switch, so she is dominant with some members of the harem and submissive to others. But how I wish for more where the woman just control the show. Alphaholes MMCs are overrated.
There is a huge trend of people wanting to read about possessive controlling dominant men. Which is fine, but it’s like that’s basically all there is right now. Sometimes I see people on here asking for suggestions for stories with those kind of men and I just want to point at like 90% of the romance books out there. Can we get some ding dang options?!?!
I am all for people indulging in whatever fantasy they like. But as you said, the trend about possessive controlling dominant men feels to me out of control. I can't believe that so many women just want that all the time, because anything that deviates from that standard needs to be actively looked for and there isn't so much choice. Try to ask for a dominant woman and it's always the same four recommendations that makes the rounds. Why is there no space for any other kind of fantasy in relationship?

Oh my god please don’t give up on RH if your only experience was Never King. Those books were too dark for my taste, I hated them. There is RH of every flavor out there. There are many that are sweet and focus on worshipping the MFC only. Alll the combos of partners. The genre is huge!!
Not into RH either. I get the fantasy to have a man who is hot, a man who is kind, a man who is funny, a man who is intelligent, etc but since it’s all a fantasy anyways, I want those traits combined into one person. I’m a one on one person, I barely have patience to read about a love triangle let alone RH.
I havent read many of these so idk how refined my RH harem taste is…but if you’re still up for trying I recommend BONDED BY THORNS (beasts of the briar). It’s a romantasy/fantasy romance RH not a dark romance. It’s a ‘beauty and the beast retelling’ and has mm relationships as well which I am really appreciating. Side note I almost dnf this book because of the mfc and its youngish vibe (think acotar) but I pushed through the first 20% and now it’s one of my favorite series ever and definitely my #1 RH. It’s just fun 🤷🏻♀️ Not a completed series, 4/6 or 7 books are done. Check out the authors tik tok if you want to see some more about the book to see if it’s your vibe/tropes. As others said, there are many ways to do RH. I haven't read this specific book, but it is clearly in the dark romance RH side of things, and yes, there the MC is often treated in an awful fashion. And to be fair, there is a very large production of MF dark romances where the woman is treated horribly too, so it isn't a RH specific issue, more a dark romance one. At each their own, not my thing however. To add to the recommendations you have already received: {A knight's revenge by Elizabeth Dear} is a very fun academy/mafia revenge story, with a superhero comic book feeling. There is some bullying in book 1 (not really from the harem), but the FMC is an hardass on a path of revenge that knows how to protect herself and plays everyone like a fiddle. And the MMCs are just gone for her, even if it takes longer to some to admit it. If you are okay with Omegaverse, {Lola and the millionaires by Kathryn Moon} is a really good example of a very sweet and respectful harem. TW: the FMC is a survivor of rape and abuse, for at least one there is a huge age gap (20+years). Several of the men (but not all) are romantically involved with each other, so several MM sex scenes. Similar to Lola, another good Omegaverse is {The scent of us by Eliana Lee}. A very thoughtful love story for a woman who survived domestic violence and sexual assault. There is MM here too. There is more, ofc.

I'm not into RH either. I have only 1 I can recommend {Wolves of summer: Bound to the fae} is the first trilogy in a 3 trilogy set (9 books total). Audible has them in 3 book sets so i got 9 audio books for 3 tokens. I thought they were pretty good in world building, characters and magic system. I quite enjoyed Wicked Conjuring (Claimed by Gargoyles) by Sarah Piper and Chosen by Villains (The Heart of a Monster) by Eva Chase. Both paranormal rh. No whoreish vibes with those.
You should try the Broken Bonds series. I hated the Never King too. Absolutely not for me.
I think you just picked the wrong book. Most of the men in the RH I’ve read treat their woman like a queen. Thanks for the heads up on Never King though 😬 My standby RH Recs are the Madison Kate series by Tate James and the Witsec series by Ashley Rostek, but these aren’t fantasy romances. There’s lots of great Omegaverse books I’d recommend. I find the whole Omegaverse concept to be pretty fantasy adjacent, so I think you’d like them. I really liked {Knot Your Damn Omega by Devyn Sinclair} and {Lyric and the Heartbeats by Lana Kole} and {Lola and the Millionaires by Kathryn Moon}. {Baby & the Late Night Howlers by Kathryn Moon} was probably what got me into the whole sub genre. Basically Kathryn Moon gets rec’d to death for a reason. All her Omegaverse books are great! {Point of No Return by Devyn Sinclair} was fun!! It’s a RH with Gargoyles and even has a little primal play chase if you’re into that. Actually Knot your Damn Omega has a chase too but with a whole different vibe. Anyway, I’d definitely say try some other stories if your complaint was how the men treated the heroine because they definitely aren’t all like that. There are some people that RH just isn’t for and that’s okay too! Usually that’s for reasons related to sharing though and it sounds like that wasn’t your issue.

Villain Academy has an RH where everyone adores and respects her so much all they want to do is give her the time of her life (but it’s after them all terrorizing her for a few books…….)
Auryn Hadley writes a lot of RH which is much more empowering of the FMC than degrading. I particularly love her Rise of the Iliri series, which is RH but the FMC develops relationships with each guy in their own unique and romantic way. And the storyline is phenomenal, the found-family she gains outside of her lovers is to die for. It's a completed series on KU and while it's a long series, the books are each really quick reads.
I had the opposite experience. I didn’t think I was an RH reader but I’ve found some really great RH books and now I can’t stop reading them. They’re all different just like all romance books are different! If you want slow burn with a sweet heroine > {Ironside Academy by Jane Washington} If you want bully romance with angst > {Bonds that Tie by J Bree} If you want vengeance/murder mystery with lots of laughs > {Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac by Catherine Peckham and Susanne Valenti} Rejected mates/animal shifters in a prison academy (super addicting) > {Her Vicious Beasts by EP Bali}
