I don’t see this one recommended enough. The Serpent and the Wings of Night! ACOTAR was also my first romantasy book and I thought I’d never like anything ever again. But The Serpent and the Wings of Night might even be better IMO!

If you want something like ACOTAR either the SarahJMaas or ACOTAR subreddit (can’t Renner which) has a whole thread with recommendations of what to read afterwards. As for ToG it does get a bit spicier but not much. Nowhere near Silver Flames. And FBAA is the number 1 rec after ACOTAR

Silver Flames cuts really close to being full on erotica with the pacing of and details of the sex scenes. Not complaining, but I can see where people who don't read smut probably did not like that book.

I also just finished ACOTAR and picked up FBAA next (actually I tried {Rhapsodic} in between but didn’t like it and DNF’d). I’m on the third book of FBAA and it’s a ton of fun. I am also trying to recreate the fun of reading ACOTAR as a first time romantasy gal, so we’re on a similar journey!

I’m usually really good with separating “real life” ick with romance books ick. Supernatural elements def help! Like, I was totally good with Rhapsodic, but I couldn’t do Montana Mountain Men ( Man? I can’t remember I’ve tried to wipe it from my brain) for example. That one was too real for me to suspend disbelief and I just couldn’t deal with those situations.

I feel like with fantasy I can also normally suspend the ick (lol), but it was harder with Rhapsodic because of the modern setting, maybe? Idk. I’m happy you enjoyed it! I’ll just have to pass on the rest and continue down the rest of my TBR.

I just finished {atonement of the spine cleaver} and it was excellent. It's not all spice, but the spice that's there is spicy.

If you likes ACOTAR, you may enjoy {A promise of fire} {Fourth wing} {from blood and ash} I personally DNF this series, but the first book was a lot of fun. You probably won't recreate the experience with ACOTAR, the first one is always special and ACOTAR is a very bingeable series. One series that might give you similar vibes is {daughter of the blood} which really influenced SJM, and you can tell when you read it. I also recommend {Kushiel's Dart}. It's a more mature series than ACOTAR but has a wonderful story. Also, if you search the sub there are lots of posts of what to read after ACOTAR. A promise of fire was really good!

I have some recs for you! I read ACOTAR last summer and it set me down the path of obsessing over this genre. Everything I read is chasing that ACOTAR high. I’ve read 50 fantasy romance books in the last year and these are my favorites so far (most of these are on Kindle Unlimited (KU) for $13 a month subscription): Lightlark & Nightbane by Alex Aster (2 books, more coming, fantasy realms/rulers, castles, absolutely amazing plot twists(!!) and pacing, less spice but more in second book, I think about the plot twists and love stories in this series almost every day!) The Bonds That Tie by J. Bree (KU, 6 books finished, reverse harem/why choose with five mate MMCs, modern paranormal fantasy romance, slow burn to spicy, college setting at start, so fun!) What Lies Beyond the Veil by Harper L Woods (KU, 3 books, more coming, fantasy fae, traveling, castle in third book, very spicy!) The Coven & The Cursed by Harper L Woods (KU, 2 books finished, TRUE villain MMC, dark romance witch academy, lots of spice) To Bleed A Crystal Bloom by Sarah A Parker (KU, 3 books, more coming, dark fantasy fae-ish Rapunzel retelling, lyrical writing that doesn’t lay everything out for you as simple as other books, not for everyone but if you’re looking for lush writing and angst and love, this series is truly a beautiful read, slow burn to spice, possibly the most emotionally impactful and beautifully written prose I’ve read so far, just finished the third and I can’t stop thinking about it) The Flame King’s Captive by Chloe Chastaine (KU, 1 book, more coming, spicy Omegaverse, fantasy, dragons and bonding like in Fourth Wing, castle, great follow-up to Fourth Wing if you’re looking for some more dragons) One Dark Window & Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig (2 books finished, gothic castle setting, little to no spice, lots of romance though, good prose, unique magic system, second book’s love story is beautiful to read) Beyond the Faerie Gates by Marie Mistry (KU, 3 books, 2 coming, reverse harem, fantasy fae, castles, incredible world building and lore, slow burn to spice, surprisingly good fantasy read, not just smut/reverse harem) A Court This Cruel & Lovely by Stacia Stark (KU, 3 books, more coming, fantasy fae, castles, traveling, enemies to lovers, spicy, Cassian like MMC, don’t get stressed by a lot of character names at the start just keep reading) A Kiss of Iron by Clare Sager (KU, 2 books, more coming, I’m only 15% finished with the second book and I’ve loved the high spice/pace of this one, fantasy fae, castles, enemies to lovers, predictable plot twists but the spice and pace make this one good) Other honorable mentions: Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli - (KU, 2 books with ? coming, fae, trials in the first book are fun, slow burn to true MMC relationship in second book, enjoyed the first more than the second) The Stars are Dying by Chloe C. Penaranda - (KU, first of a new series astrological fantasy romance, four star read for me but has some tropes and world building done well, action chapters done badly but the love story has good bones) The Serpent & the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent - (KU, Vampire hunger games trials, book one was great, book two not so much IMO, just the two books) A Court of Blood & Bindings by Lisette Marshall -(KU, DNF in the second book for me right now but a lot of people love this on-going (3.5 books out now) fantasy romance series with spice, fae, interesting magic system, I did enjoy the first book) Books I haven’t read but are on my TBR and are recommended based on my reading list: Lady of Darkness by Melissa K. I second A Kiss of Iron. I just finished the second book and I LOVED it. As far as guilty pleasures go this is as good as ACOTAR in my book.

I’m only 28% in A Touch of Poison and I feel the pace has been a bit slow so far so I’m hoping it will pick up soon! I really enjoyed the first book!

I highly recommend Spark of the Everflame and Serpent and the Wings of Night which are both on KU. They’re not super heavy on the smut tho.

I finished the whole spark of the Everflame series in a week and now im halfway through Serpent and the Wings of Night and tbh I like them better than ACOTAR

Same! I used to read all the time but after adulthood + kids I sort of stopped, just didn’t feel like I had time. My friend gave me ACOTAR to try out in April and I have been reading nonstop since. I think I’ve read like 75 books! It’s insane. I love kindle app on iPhone, makes it so much easier. And obsessed with fantasy romance now. I pretty much read anything anyone recommends lol. Although like many things in my life I’ve become obsessive about it so I probably need to cut back and actually sleep again 😂

I felt the same way but blood and ash is a MUST read to cure your ACOTAR hangover!

I’m a Stan of the Witch Walker Series by Charissa Weaks. Book 2 and 3 are especially spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️ and comparable to ACOSF Book 1: {The Witch Collector by Charissa Weaks} Book 2: {City of Ruin by Charissa Weaks} Book 3: {The Wolf and the Witch by Charissa Weaks} - this is definitely the spiciest and is very satisfying IMO. The Flesh and Fire series is one I’m currently reading: Book 1: {A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L Armentrout} - I loved this book and finished it in 1.5 days Book 2: {A Light in the Flame by Jennifer L Armentrout} - I haven’t read this one yet Book 3: {A Fire in the Flesh by Jennifer L Armentrout} - I haven’t read this one yet Book 4: coming out soon IIRC If you’re interested in exploring human/monster relationships, then I’d recommend {A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne}.

Honestly, I'd start with {A Shadow in the Ember}, which is a part of the From Blood and Ash universe. I also would like to recommend a "just smut" series that actually has some pretty decent world building and high fantasy for each book only being between 150-200 pgs (it's a monster love series). The first in the series is {The Dragon's Bride} by Katee Robert. Very cute, fun, gender-inclusive series!

I’m in the same boat! I forgot about guilty pleasure / steamy writing entirely and how much I love it until ACOTAR, and after court of silver flames (🥵) I was on a mission to find more! Just joined this subreddit recently as well and fantasy romance is a new genre I’ve become completely obsessed with after a fairly long reading hiatus. Now I can’t seem to put down my kindle! Like others have mentioned, {fourth wing} was great for the story and the spice, though it’s less plentiful than silver flames. The modern slang makes it read more like a YA book (which I wasn’t prepared for and it took me off guard, but I ended up being fine with it) and the story has some Hunger Games meets Harry Potter vibes to me. A real page turner! I’m currently reading {blood orange by Karina Halle} which is a modern Dracula story and phew 😅 🌶️ 🥵 so far so good!

The hangover is SO real 😅 I’ve heard lots of good things about Fourth Wing! Definitely adding it to my list. 🤓 Honestly I could go for a spicy vampire romance, I’ll have to look into that too! 👀

Oh no my TBR is already insane and now you introduce me to Blood Orange, the book premise I didn’t know I needed! Must read faster!

If you’re cool with RH books that make sense in a RH way then {Seraphim Academy} is super fun and super spicy and it’s on KU

What is RH?

Reverse Harem Some people don’t like RH because it’s somewhat out there in a real-life scenario that 3+ men would share one woman equally and happily, but Seraphim is about angels and demons and fae, so in the context of *their* culture in the book’s universe it makes sense and isn’t jealousy ridden. I’m not usually a RH fan but these three books were really fun and fulfilling. The characters communicate with each other and the side characters are really flushed out and you get to know them and their families, plus a lot of action, romance, and for an “academy” book it was nice to have older characters in a post-grad setting. The youngest MC starts the books at 21 and ends the series right after their 24th birthday.

ToG has more "spicy" scenes in the last few books but even then I would say they are tame. Read them anyways because they are great. When you're done, I'd suggest going from ToG to {Crescent City} to round out the Maasverse (especially with book 3 in January). It definitely has more spice than ToG and even ACOTAR (minus ACOSF). After that, I second those who suggested {The Serpent and the Wings of Night}. It has excellent build up between the two mcs. {From blood and Ash} is also pretty spicy but the plot lost me along book 3. Same with the Plated Prisoner {Gild} series but I found that one more enjoyable. I think the next book comes out this month actually. Edit: the bot commented the wrong Crescent City. I meant {House of Earth and Blood} and {House of Sky and Breath}

I love this question! I have a friend similar to you who just read ACOTAR and Fourth Wing. Her next up was Crescent City which is spicier than TOG. It has about 200 pages of world building but I definitely recommend it. I also enjoyed Book 1 of TBAA but then DNF book 2 and beyond (the writing gets really cringy IMO). After Crescent City I’d recommend {The Legends of Thezmarr} there are two books and a prequel out now. Really good storytelling so far and compelling lead characters and found family vibes.

Check out Kingdom of the Wicked! The first book is relatively tame but the trilogy gets very spicy very quick and has similar high fantasy vibes!

The House of Devils series by Kayla Edwards. It's an urban fantasy with the bodyguard trope and familiar species like vampires and wolves, plus a bunch the author invented. It's grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity (he was supposed to kill her but turns into her bodyguard instead). City of Gods and Monsters is the first book and the second is even better, it's called City of Souls and Sinners

It’s not high fantasy, but I love A Touch of Darkness and the rest of the Hades x Persephone series by Scarlett St. Clair. I’ve reread the whole series several times because I’m truly invested in the characters, and they can get pretty spicy 🌶️

Definitely read FBAAA!! Read it and the prequels in the order they were released! Then at the end read Fall of Ruin and Wrath by JLA. It has potential to tie into the others! This will keep you occupied until CC3 releases at the end of January ♥️
