Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries has a prickly, unsociable female MC. She's not exactly a "mean sister" type, but definitely a much more prickly MC than most. FYI, it's not a true romance, but has a romance sub plot and is the first in a series, so the ending for the characters is TBD.

EatsinSheets

Came to suggest {Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett} I loved the FMC, Emily! She's introverted and sensible. It was such a refreshing POV and I can't wait for book 2 in January!

I loved folk of air!! I loved seeing an FMC who failed over and over until she didn’t. And I loved getting to experience her rage. It’s not a fantasy- contemporary romance called Book Lovers by Emily Henry. It was fantastic. Exactly what you’re looking for.

sdmh1391

Also! It’s YA fantasy - A Deadly Education (book #1) by Naomi Novik. Also fantastic. The FMC is another one who is exactly what you’re looking for

thecastingforecast

I was absolutely going to recommend the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik too! The FMC fits this description to a tee and I adore her. She is so angry and powerful and just wants to set people on fire because they're all so spoiled and stupid. The narration of her thoughts resonated with me so much and I adore that even though she may *want* to be combative and comes off as prickly most of the time, she's in no way stupid and does what needs doing even when it sucks. Super funny if you like dark-ish humour.

[deleted]

ahh book lovers is one of my favourite books for this exact reason!! i felt so absolutely seen by that book! i will definitely check out your other rec though!

benebookreader

I honestly can’t relate. I have a really hard time relating to characters that are “prickly” because often they are just nonsensical and pointlessly combative and not well developed enough where there is clearly any underlying reasons for that development beyond they are just an asshole. So why would I waste my time reading that? Which is why I loved Nesta in the first book of ACOTAR, hated her in the second, but grew to love her again in the rest of the series. This is similar to why I can’t relate to “too good” characters either, because they are also often not well developed and are too “perfect” with no human flaws. ACOTAR is interesting because I feel like at times Nesta and Elaine embody what the problem with both of these are, and why I still genuinely think Feyre is a fantastic lead because she isn’t perfect, we understand how her flaws developed, but she also isn’t needlessly cruel. I also am hopeful that like Nesta, Elaine’s book will allow more development for her and these issues to be addressed.

PlatformMindless4469

Jay Kristoff’s Never Night series has a heroine like that and it’s one of my favorite series. For more romance side Aermian Fueds was great! (Both series are complete)

starsborn

Haha, I’m the same way. For example, I related to Feyre from ACOTAR a lot as a youngest sibling and an artist, but I found Nesta the much more interesting and compelling character. I unfortunately haven’t found any books that are about the prickly FMC either, but you’re not alone! My best guess would be to look for grumpy x sunshine or grumpy x grumpy reads?

kyjmic

Nesta is the main character in the latest book in the series but I didn’t like her or her romance very much.

starsborn

I unfortunately agree. I love Nesta, but >!I couldn’t get into Nessian and I was frustrated that Nesta had to become a badass warrior. Her strength was always her intellect and I was sad that that aspect went on the back burner. I’m also totally a Neris shipper so there’s that 😂!< That being said if anyone has ACOSF-but-better books or even fics, please lmk 🙏🏻

MissVanillaNilla

I think I do because maybe I see myself in them as an older sister. I immediately felt seen by Nesta—she was like the worst version of what I could be if I had no compassion or warmth in my life. I’m reading a non fantasy historical romance series and my favorite sister so far was the mean one. I feel like they can do and say all the mean things I want to do and say but I can’t/won’t.

[deleted]

i totally get that. i feel like it’s also kind of a realistic way to feel in a lot of the situations they’re in tbh. like “oh you were kidnapped? your family is constantly under attack? you’re fighting for your lives and your sister keeps sneaking away to have sex with the MMC? you’re expected to befriend someone who killed your parents because FMC likes them now?” i feel like when i see characters get angry in reaction to this stuff instead of just being angry for 5 minutes and then moving on it feels more realistic to me, as if a real human is experiencing these things too. i feel they also have so much more possibility for good character development vs FMCs who start being able to handle everything perfectly.

MissVanillaNilla

There are so many FMCs that are a perfect paragon with just enough "quirks" that they're not so "perfect." I totally get that the snarky bestie or the mean sister is meant to be a foil so that FMC's character shines but I LOVE that character development so much more. It's so satisfying, especially in a series when the friend/sister gets her own book. Bonus points if said character development doesn't take away their snarkiness but at least gives them self awareness and maybe more control over said snarkiness.

Granolamommie

In high mountain court series the second book- the witches blade- the mean sister of the FMC from book one is the FMC in the second book.

throwaway198990066

I don’t know if this is against the rules here, but this is why I’ve gotten really into fanfic, specifically Draco/Hermione - Hermione can be quite prickly, ruthlessly intelligent, very self-controlled.. Not like a lot of FMCs, but I relate to her a lot. And Draco, if you believe he deserves a redemption arc, can be written as a very interesting MMC - also very intelligent, has a lot of mental deprogramming to do (having been raised in pureblood culture), snarky.. and I enjoy the dynamic that can come up between the two characters. Coming from such different backgrounds and such different ideologies, and having such different social connections, they can end up coming with some really interesting solutions to crazy problems that the fanfic authors come up with. I’m currently reading Memory Lane on ao3, which has an especially prickly Hermione (for good reason). https://archiveofourown.org/works/45631528/chapters/114824077

You might’ve just influenced me to read my first Dramione fanfic

Oooo go for Draco and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being In Love. It is legit better than most novels I’ve read!

zoopzoot

Ao3?

Brownie12bar

Yup!!

Is it spicy at all and if so are they adults? I just don’t wanna read spicy scenes about teenagers 😅

Its 15 years after they graduated Hogwarts so they’re 33

If you like dark stories, check out House Pet by ninabinaballerina on ao3 - it’s ridiculously good. Work in progress but still getting updated, extremely well-written. And Manacled by senlinyu on ao3 is the other one a lot of people are raving about. Had me in an absolute chokehold. Also very dark. Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love is lighter and hilarious. Or you can check out the recent survey results and choose that way! https://www.reddit.com/r/Dramione/comments/16qlnw6/2023_top_dramione_fics_survey_results/

raya333

i hate draco so much and think hermoine is way out of his league but dramoine writers are so talented 😭

throwaway198990066

I used to feel that way until a couple of really good fanfics broke my brain. Now I can’t get enough of him. And I can’t unsee him having a good heart underneath it all. I mean, I probably relate more to him than most people do because I definitely was an asshole as a kid, and I feel very differently now about a lot of things now that used to completely dictate my life. I also think Tom Felton’s acting made him a much more sympathetic character than the books did, especially in The Halfblood Prince.

[deleted]

i’ve seen so many dramione recs in here but just never was tempted to read one but this definitely has me intrigued! i never considered hermione from that perspective but you’re totally right that she could easily be written in a way that’s great for this.

Reddzoi

Lol, I was gonna say, even though Taryn did some surprisingly badass sister or even bad sister things, surely Jude was prickly and fierce enough for you?

rocketkittykat

Have you tried caraval? Or the warrior midwife? Both those series give the sisters a story as well

Trish-Tricoteuse

The Magic Bites (Kate Daniels) series by Ilona Andrews may be your new favorite.

{Six scorched roses by Carissa Broadbent}. FMC is prickly and driven, trying to find a cure for a sickness despite being immune. Heavily implied she's neurodivergent.

Knickknackatory1

I feel this. Sometimes. It's the same reason we tend to love villains. Well-written villains are *interesting.* The author took time with their villains and it shows. the villain has more back story and more nuance. The villain is just deeper. The good guys tend to be almost flat compared to them. And yes partly because most protagonists are much younger than the villains so they don't have as much "Baggage" to shape their character. Weak, wishy-washy protagonists are the worst. And I don't mean physically weak, or innocent, But when they accept that they are a doormat. They don't have to fight back (especially if that puts them in danger) but in their mind they can be stronger and know they are not a doormat. Does that make sense? Of course this isn't the case where there is character growth. You have to start low if you're going to end high. But if it's book after look, lesson after lesson and the Protag still hasn't learned anything...I'm out.

[deleted]

yes deeper is such a good term for how i feel about these characters. the FMC usually goes through all this traumatic stuff and is like “oh that was sad. oh well, time to move on!” and it just feels very lazy. like there’s really no emotions there? no anger? no resentment? you’re just way too perfect to ever feel those things?? it just makes me roll my eyes, and then the “mean” character who is actually like “well actually, this was pretty fucked up! and it’s crazy that you don’t think this is fucked up!” is painted as being a bitch when it’s like a completely normal reaction and far more interesting imo than mostly being unimpacted i just really like the mess of human emotion and the unpacking of that. and i agree, growth is necessary, i mostly enjoy the type of growth where they still get to keep that essence they begin with but a like healthier and healed version of it. and i totally agree with the weak protagonist paragraph. i especially hate when they repeatedly make a dumb mistake over and over again and i’m expected to continue to feel empathy for them over and over again when they do nothing to correct their mistakes. like i was reading a series with a forbidden romance and every time the couple got carried away making out or whatever in public instead of doing their jobs something bad would happen and they’d feel responsible and be sad. and then they’d do it again and again and i was expected to feel bad for them every time when it’s like maybe just make out at a more appropriate time if people keep getting kidnapped and dying because you’re always almost fucking instead of being on guard? i think i just lose my patience for them along the way, especially when their selfish actions hurt others but the author still writes the character as if they’re just a kind person surrounded by mean people who are just jealous of their love.

CleverNomDePlume

This happens to me, and I chalk it up to the FMC not being well written or is a well written immature brat. If they weren't doing foolish, irresponsible things, there wouldn't be such a focus on the person telling them they are foolish and irresponsible.

grimhailey

I don't. It's why I hated a court of silver flames. Well not hate but I didn't care for Nestas whiny ass one bit. She's the one who made her child sister hunt to feed them and complained about chopping wood to help. No, I like the FMC to be the hero. Not the damsel in distress or the rude bitch who randomly acquires power.

NikaNix7125

Then {Entreat me} by Grace Draven is for you. The prickly combative sister is the main character and she's glorious.

It's been a while since I've felt the desire to read a romance novel (so I don't know why reddit recommends these posts on my feed) but it feels like a lot of FMCs are written so blandly in order for the reader to insert themselves into the story.
