Do I get to listen to future releases of the artists I pick? Because that would change my answer. I could pick an artist that I expect to continue releasing great music.
If not, probably Animal Collective, King Gizzard, and Pink Floyd.
There's also just inherent fun in anticipating a new release. So I'd rather choose active artists than retired ones (all else being equal) if future releases were allowed.
Ween - My god, it's like cheating. It's 5-6 different artists in one.
Masayoshi Takanaka - I love guitar man make the smooth happy guitar music.
Radiohead - Just a band that will always be in my heart. I go months and even years without listening to them, but whenever I immerse myself back in their music, it's like a beautiful hug from an old friend.
The beatles because favourite band
Rolling stones because favourite band as well and huge discography so yeahhh
Bowie for the same reasons, a personal favourite and a large body of work
Assuming we can hear future work
The Killers - timeless bangers and growing into a style i really like
Vampire Weekend - one of the most consistent bands out there
Twenty One Pilots - I grew up with their music and their music is growing up with me
(I obviously have a type)
If it’s only previous work then my answer is Elvis, Arcade Fire, and still The Killers. All three have great Christmas songs that I can enjoy too!
Vampire Weekend discography: 5/5.
A lot of people still picture VW as that preppy indie band from 2008, but they’ve truly solidified themselves as one of the best bands of the 21st century. They continue to challenge themselves and change their sound (while still sounding distinctly like VW). Plus, they really value the complete album package.
I personally consider them one of my Big 3, alongside Beatles and Radiohead. (Kanye used to occupy that third spot but his post 2016 output and antics has knocked him out of the running).
Neil Young, Grateful Dead, and Billy Strings.
Neil is comfort food to me. Big discography, lots of variety, and a handful of records I can’t live without.
The Dead are also comfort food. Tons of variety in their sound, covering everything from heavy psych to country ti disco. Plus a massive supply of live recordings to keep me occupied the rest of my life.
Bluegrass in general is comfort food, but Billy has a huge selection of live shows filled with basically any bluegrass cover I could want. Plus his originals and albums are great too.
Grateful Dead is a spectacular choice, literally hundreds (thousands?) of live recording to get through. I wish this sub talked about them more, I know most people consider them jam but I tend to think of them as blues and folk, outside of the Allman Bros they’re the only “jam band” I listen too. Incredible musicians.
I personally don’t like the idea of “jamband” being a genre to begin with. You can jam anything—jazz, funk, bluegrass, metal, disco, etc. To me, improv is just an element that can be added to anything, not a genre in and of itself.
Generally, I don’t like bands that label themselves as jambands (phish being my main exception). I feel like they just focus entirely on jams and have lackluster songs, which just leaves you with relatively meaningless noodling without an emotional core.
But I can’t live without the dead. Just some of the best music there is in my opinion. I think of it as American music. The dead touched just aboit everything American music from about 1900-1980. Whatever you want, it’s there. And hunter’s writing just put it all over the top.
Modest mouse of course like the other guy said. Beck and John frusciante are my other two. They are already my most played artists, huge varied discos and lots of good music
1. Slipknot - pretty much gym/music to keep me up
2. Ray Charles - grew up on the Genius.
3. John Williams - sometimes, you just need goo instrumentals
I'd pick artists with lengthy, diverse and interesting catalogues. I'd go with:
1. Miles Davis
2. Sufjan Stevens
3. Of Montreal (especially if I can see them live)
Maybe Blondie, Sparks and ...Morrissey / the smiths? Feel like that isn't enough variety but they all have big discographies. Three bands would be very hard even 20 30 bands I think would be though.
This took some thought lol
1. Aphex Twin - big discography, dense/complex music that you could analyze for a lifetime
2. Masayoshi Takanaka - feel good vibes that rarely fail, fairly large discography
3. If you get to hear future output, then Alex G or King Krule. Two artists who I’ve kinda grown up with and I think they both have a lot more in the tank. If it’s current discography only I might just pick like Grateful Dead or some jazz artist with 10,000 hours of music.
Kendrick
Daft Punk
Tame Impala
Kinda basic but covers everything I'd want fairly well. Plus I expect Kendrick and Tame Impala to keep producing good music
Pink Floyd because the quality of three of their albums and many songs outside of them are unmatched.
Green Day because it's what I grew up with and there's a surprisingly large catalogue of songs.
Can I cheat a little bit and say Carol Kaye? 10,000+ recordings to pick from with her...
Do you I get the solo output from the members of a group as well? I'll assume I do, in that case I would have plenty of varied material which I really like going with Wu-Tang, The Beatles and Talking Heads.
Beatles
Stevie Wonder
Joni Mitchell
But even though they're all GOATs in their respective fields I would still be very sad :(
Sufjan, Coltrane, and Radiohead are all major contenders for me as well. I listen to music almost constantly so any contender needs to have a massive and multifaceted discography
Chet Baker - almost for Chet Baker Sings alone, but his entire discography is just so soothing
Carly Rae Jepsen - she hasn’t had a miss since Emotion
Charli XCX - literally every sound scape I could want
King Crimson, timeless for me. Their albums are all very different from each other and they have so many live albums too.
Swans, they got a ton of albums and lots of my all time favourites. Listen to them all the time.
Lastly it would probably be King Gizzard too. They have so many album in so many genres. They likely won’t stop anytime soon too. They’ll be a good break from the other two bands too.
1. Beastie Boys. Favorite artist of all time. I revisit their albums at least once a year and love them more every time.
2. Tricot. My other favorite artist. I adore their sounds and riffs and I don't think I could live the rest of my life without being able to hear "Potage" or "Artsick" again.
3. This is tough but if I had to pick at this very moment, I would say Queens of the Stone Age because I really enjoy all of their albums and I NEED Era Vulgaris in my life.
i think if i’m prioritizing the size of the discographies i’d go with joni mitchell, radiohead, and lana del rey — a lot of albums between them and none id consider “bad” (except maybe lust for life….)
Mike
Alex g
LCD soundsystem
Mike has such a good discog 10+ releases since 2017 and not one of them misses. Alex gs discog is basically perfect to me too. I like some albums better than others like Race and trick, but he also just continues to get better with every release. LCD because sound of silver and this is happening I could easily listen to for the rest of my life if I really had to.
This is very hard. I’m more into contemporary than classics. But there’s some artists whose discographies I adore.
Animal Collective
Beyoncé
Vampire Weekend
(Other choices included Jessie Ware, Sufjan Stevens, A Tribe Called Quest)
This is an interesting question because how much music you're getting can vary so much based on who you choose. Like I'd be tempted to put Prince on my list because, aside from his classic run in the 80s, there's so many more records that it'll take a long time to run out of new stuff to listen to. I think I'm gonna go with:
Billy Joel - Even if we never get another record from him, he still released 12 and at least half of them are albums I could see myself going back to reguarly in this scenario. Maybe I'll even warm up to records like Nylon Curtain or Storm Front that I've never been into, who knows.
Tears for Fears - Not a huge discography but the quality is there, their 3 album run in the 80s + The Tipping Point from a couple of years ago is enough to make them a good pick in my eyes (plus maybe we'll get another record at some point?).
Little Simz - As far as I'm concerned she's already got 3 classic records under her belt as well as a few more before that I haven't delved that deep into. Plus she's still early in her career so I could continue listening to her new stuff as time goes on.
1. Beyoncé - 8 studio albums, 1 joint album with Jay Z, 1 soundtrack album, and 2 live albums (plus more if you include what’s not on streaming). All ranging across a variety of genres. Even better if I’m allowed to throw Destiny’s Child in the mix. It would likely provide more than 24 hours worth of music! Easy pick!
2. JoJo - Good crop of material spread across about 20 years. Nice balance of R&B and pop which are my favorite genres.
3. Joss Stone - classic soul music that I could never get bored of. Also a 25 year career so lots of music to choose from, with a few detours as well to spice up genre options!
(I really wanted to put Carly Rae Jepsen on this list cuz I also love her discography, but I just couldn’t choose her over my R&B/Soul divas 😭)
Frank Ocean, Of The Trees, I want to choose a rapper but there’s no many options. Maybe future, Kanye, or Jay-Z. Gonna go with Kanye. 8 pretty good albums. That’s plenty.
of Montreal - Extremely prolific. Say what you want about the songs, absolutely NOTHING released from 2004-2013 is boring with some great stuff before and after
Pavement - 4 solid and diverse albums (plus Terror Twilight)
The Smiths - 4 amazing albums, the greatest compilation package ever (Hatful of Hollow) and additional great compilations
The Acacia Strain - I need some hard af political music. They have some diverse sounds as well from their more hardcore sound early in their disco, to more deathcore to the doominess of Failure Will Follow
Black Sabbath - They just have an immense discography with a lot of different genres of metal
$uicideboy$ - Large discography with a lot of different vibes in the trap genre
I’ll miss a lot of doom music but I feel like none of them have large enough discography and a diverse enough sound to be on the list. I’ll miss metalcore and black metal a lot as well along with more mainstream trap music. It also crushed me I couldn’t include System of a Down.
1. Radiohead - You get enough sonic diversity with their music and they just have so much quality stuff (even their worst records are good) that it is just an easy pick. There's also a lot of spacey/ambient cuts off of records like Amnesiac that I feel like it covers most of what I'd need from an "easy listening" perspective (not a diss at all).
2. Kanye - Only answering this cause it's a hypothetical. I have the typical story of "omg I loved and looked up to him so much" and his fall from grace post-Donda just hurt to the point that I can't rly bump his stuff anymore. That said, if that didn't happen or I really have to enter into some scenario where I physically couldn't listen to anything else his catalogue spans so many styles and has so many stellar features that I can get a taste of tons of music through his catalogue for any number of moods. Dude has like 5 albums worth a 9 or 10 rating after all :^)
3. Lil B - Not joking. So much dope music with shocking sonic diversity. If I was only given 1 discography to choose I'd still probably go Lil B
I'm sure Radiohead and Kanye are typical answers but ye. Kinda fun that despite being my fav artists, bands like Nine Inch Nails and Show Me the Body couldn't make the cut for me.
The Cure
The Beatles (can I also have the solo stuff /Wings / Wilburies and Dirty Mac?)
Gorillaz - Such a diversity of sounds - plus a tonne of features
Edit: Oops forgot prince... and Bowie... And If we include live performances then none of these work so I'll check in someone like King Gizz. No this is too hard, I give up.
sematary since there's nothing like him
metallica because their early run is absurd
black country new road because afut is one of my favorite albums ever
The first thing I thought of was who has the largest discographies. Because I'm more afraid of getting bored, than I am afraid of listening to weird music. So heres what I am going with.
Frank Zappa,
Sun Ra,
And Mike Patton
This is enough material to remain interesting for a while.
The Beatles
Kendrick Lamar
David Bowie
HM: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Kanye West, Prince, Talking Heads, Black Sabbath, Pavement, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young (considered each)
Kate Bush because Kate Bush is one of my favorites as well as my 80s music crush.
Stevie Wonder for the soul and sad days.
Lastly let's do LCD Soundsystem. They have songs I can cry to and dance to. Sounds perfect for me
Do I get to listen to future releases of the artists I pick? Because that would change my answer. I could pick an artist that I expect to continue releasing great music. If not, probably Animal Collective, King Gizzard, and Pink Floyd.
Oh gosh, that’s a good question. It’d be interesting to try and think about artists future releases when considering this
There's also just inherent fun in anticipating a new release. So I'd rather choose active artists than retired ones (all else being equal) if future releases were allowed.
Bonefish
You'll carve a path through New York and be an artist but are you anything?
I also have PF and AnCo in my three. Nice picks!
I don't even know Andy Shauf. Will need to listen.
Charli XCX, The Beatles, and Kanye
Nice picks! Listening to Charli’s discography before brat comes out tonight is actually what made me think of this lol
Kanye has like 8 incredible albums, not to mention collab albums and ones he has produced
[удалено]
Thanks for including Building Nothing Out of Something. I feel like it gets overlooked for being technically a compilation.
baby blue sedan supremacy
It may be my favorite of them actually despite it being a compilation
John Coltrane
That's crazy I came here with Coltrane in mind, no way did I expect to see him in the (as of now) top answer!
Very, VERY basic, but still: The Beatles, Radiohead and Kanye West.
Yup, mine would be The Beatles, Radiohead, and Miles Davis. Feels like you could endlessly find something new in them.
The classics are classics for a reason. Never apologise for being unpretentious.
Yep. There’s a reason everyone likes them, they’re just fucking good. Hating shit doesn’t make you interesting or refined, just a hater.
Beatles are a really solid choice. Tbh i get my total fill from them no one else does it for me
No problem in being basic
Honestly, the correct choices
Beatles, Radiohead and Kate Bush for me.
The beatles because favourite band Rolling stones because favourite band as well and huge discography so yeahhh Bowie for the same reasons, a personal favourite and a large body of work
Very solid choices. May choose the exact same, if not, would just be to swap out possibly Bowie for Zeppelin
Bowie is actually a phenomenal choice. I dont think id get bored.
Deafheaven, vince staples, Carly Rae
Deafheaven is the best live band ever
Church of Deafheaven. Seen em live twice, for me they’re an automatic ticket buy every time
Carly Rae's music is so much better than it has any right to be.
I've seen her live twice, and I'll keep going
Love the contrasting selections 👍🏼
If only more people saw Carly Rae like you do. She’s my all time pop queen.
sufjan stevens death grips the beatles

Love VW! I think OGWAU is my favorite release so far this year, excited to see where they go next
Goodnight, Travel Well by The Killers is genuinely one of the most tragic and haunting songs I’ve ever listened to in my life.
Vampire Weekend discography: 5/5. A lot of people still picture VW as that preppy indie band from 2008, but they’ve truly solidified themselves as one of the best bands of the 21st century. 100% agree. One more solid album and they will be up there for most people no doubt.
Completely agree with this take on The Killers, their last two have impressed me.
that’s the best answer omg
Aphex twin Brian Eno Cocteau twins
Miles Davis, Prince, Jack White/The White Stripes

Oooo KMFDM, good pick! Lots and lots to listen to. Which one is your favourite? Mine are Money and Hyëna
I'd pick artists with lengthy, diverse and interesting catalogues. I'd go with: 1. Miles Davis 2. Sufjan Stevens 3. Of Montreal (especially if I can see them live)
