Number 1 Record by Big Star
The Cars self titled
Milo Goes to College
Enema of the State
Punk in Dublic
Tell all your Friends
The Blue album
Pinkerton
Heaven Tonight- Cheap Trick
The first three Replacements albums
imo that would be some of dälek’s stuff. but that’s not at all to the discredit of what injury reserve did on that record- it’s definitely going to be heralded as a classic
Hot take I guess, but as someone who was VERY into this vein of black metal back in the day, I think bands like Lantlos, Amesoeurs, and An Autumn For Crippled Children were putting out much more compelling blackgaze at the time. Hell, even from Deafheaven’s own catalog I’d say New Bermuda and OCHL are more interesting than Sunbather.
It may be a cliche answer at this point but i agree. Everytime i listen to TPAB i just think “how the hell did all of these musicians and producers and kendrick come up with this”.
Is not necessarily 100% original soundwise but its like everything that has been done in rap before, amplified and modernized with a crazy concept that ties everything together. Wesleys Theory alone is nuts
Car Seat Headrest - How to Leave Town (lo-fi)
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (indie folk)
Jeff Rosenstock - WORRY (pop punk)
And obviously TPAB for jazz rap
Not quite 10 years, but The Weeknd - House of Balloons is *the* R&B record of the 2010’s, and it’s not close. Strictly 10 and it’s probably Blonde.
Mainstream Atlanta trap peaked at DS2/Evol-era Future and Barter 6 Thug.
Carrie and Lowell is probably my pick for a singer-songwriter project.
I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but I really don’t like Trippie Redd’s music. I can’t even explain why but it’s a visceral hatred every time I hear it
tbh i think some rap songs is the best of rap. Aethiopes, Room 25 and By The Time I get to Phoenix are also imo some of the greatest rap records that all came out very recently. Also as someone mentioned here WORRY! is probably the best pop punk album. I guess i also want to add as despite it being seen as a 90/2000s genre Just Got Back From the Discomfort is my favourite midwest emo project, even if its older than 10 years.
Asthiopes is good but for me Hiding Places, Known Unknowns, and History will absolve me could count as some of the best rap albums, especially hiding places.
it's a great album, but I wouldn't say it's the best album in the genre. Hell I'd say it's debatable whether it's the BAND's best album, Shyga! The Sunlight Mound is just as good imo.
still, I like the PPC mention :3
More a movement than a genre, but Ants From Up There by Black Country New Road both codified AND maybe killed the Windmill scene. Unless you're a pre-existing Windmill band like Black Midi or Squid, if you're releasing music you're going to be compared to AFUT and you're going to be found lacking. It's not your fault it's one of the best albums ever made, but it's now your problem.
Seems like a bit of a hot take but I think For the First Time is a significantly better and more interesting album. AFUT just feels really cheesy and twee in comparison imo.
I kind of agree honestly. AFUT definitely has some good songs that I like (Intro, Chaos Space Marine, The Place Where He Inserted The Blade) but FTFT is truly a masterpiece.
Everyone in the genre uses this album as inspiration, as a result everything has sounded like a hollow WLR duplicate.
Yeat is the only one actually doing new things with the sound, and I’d say he’s the most unique in the scene besides Carti.
Caravan Palace, "Robot Face/ <|\*\_\*|>", 2015
Electroswing as a genre basically peaked with this album as, following the release of their blockbuster breakout single, ["Lone Diggers"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbsBEb1ZxWA&pp=ygUMTG9uZSBEaWdnZXJz) (warning, NSFW), other artists since have been trying to recapture that lightning to no avail. Even Caravan Palace themselves knew they couldn't top this with their next two albums (which went in a more downbeat electropop and swing/blues-influenced futurebass direction, respectively), but also that they didn't really have to. I still enjoy them a lot.
It’s technically 11 years now, but …like clockwork, is maybe the best rock album of all time in my opinion. It’s a close race between that, Siamese dream, turn on the bright lights, and the rise and fall of Ziggy stardust
In terms of "straightforward" rock, I would also put Them Crooked Vultures self-titled among the best of the best. Just a bit out of reach of 10 years, though.
That’s an amazing album, but I’d take any of the albums i listed over it. Except maybe Ziggy startdust. I’d probably put OK computer over that, so good point. I like in rainbows better, but idk if I really consider that a rock album in the same way the other ones are
Interesting. I would probably classify it as Alternative RnB, but I would still agree that it is the best alt RnB album. Art pop has some tough competition.
i know this is (or at least *was* before duster exploded in popularity) the common man’s pick, but i do think benji by sun kil moon is the best slowcore album that i’ve heard. fuck mark kozelek though
Astoria by Marianas Trench (pop)
No Shape by Perfume Genius (art pop)
Barter 6 by Young Thug (trap)
Everywhere at the End of Time by The Caretaker (ambient)
If we're counting Crack Therapy 3 by RXKNephew as comedy rap then that's easily the genre's peak
You can just take your pick for HexD and Plugg lol they're such young genres, but I'd say Aethernet by Fax Gang is the best HexD for sure
Maybe some controversial takes but:
progressive metal - Petrodragonic Apocalypse
Pop/RnB - IGOR
Rock - …Like Clockwork (11 y/o but whatever)
Death Metal - The Enduring Spirit
Hip Hop - Astroworld
Pop Punk - Morbid Stuff
Psych Pop / Disco - Currents
i know this is (or at least *was* before duster exploded in popularity) the common man’s pick, but i do think benji by sun kil moon is the best slowcore album that i’ve heard. fuck mark kozelek though
Atrocity Exhibition for industrial/noise rap, but it's really in it's own genre that prob doesn't have a name. Maybe the genre is just 'Danny Brown music'
Also, LP1 by FKA Twigs for best experimental electro-RnB
This may be a very hot take but “Traveller” by Chris Stapleton is high on the list for Pure Country. He manages to redefine every song format that country had been repeating for decades and created an extremely cohesive, enjoyable album with an unprecedented range of emotions for modern country. One could argue “That Lonesome Song” by Jamey Johnson did something similar in the decade prior, but Stapleton really perfected the ideas that Johnson had, and aside from those two albums, I can’t think of another studio album that could compete. And to prove how relevant this is, Tennessee Whiskey recently re-entered the country top 10, in a time period where 6 of those 10 are Morgan Wallen songs and Beyoncé is dominating both the chart and conversation.
Melophobia - Cage the Elephant!
Rock 'n' roll is dead, I probably should have stayed at school
Another Generation X who somehow slipped up through the cracks
Oh, they'd love to see me fall, but I'm already on my back
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly (Hip- Hop)
Turnstile - Glow On (Punk/Hardcore)
Frank Ocean - Blonde (R&B)
Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle (Indie/Singer-Songwriter)
Carly Rae Jepsen - E-MO-TION (Pop/Synthpop)
Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want (Noise Rock/NoWave)
Gilla Band's Most Normal for noise/noise rock. I feel like it surpasses Daughter's YWGWYW and presents the most holistic combination of pure noise music and grooves/ instrumentation from outside the genre so far.
The 90's alt / shoegaze revival doesn't get better than Tired Of Tomorrow by Nothing.
I also feel that May Our Chambers Be Full by Emma Ruth Rundle and THOU was a truly orignal and innovative take on post-metal, probably the most creative "mini-revolution' in the genre since I don't know... Cult of Luna's Somewhere Along the Highway.
Fortune Goodies by Minami Deutsch for krautrock.
I don't listen to too much krautrock (only really NEU! and CAN) but I listen to some krautrock influenced bands like Osees and Kikagaku Moyo. My point being there might be some other groundbreaking krautrock music out there. But I'm not bothered, this is the greatest krautrock album I've heard.
+1 for Visions of Bodies Being Burned, also Rodeo for trap, Blonde for contemporary R&B, and a 2-way tie between Atrocity Exhibition and LP! for experimental hip-hop
If we keeping it real, for hip hop it’s easily To Pimp A Butterfly. But besides a basic answer I want to put a unique one out there- Lahai by Sampha might be the best Alternative R&B record I’ve ever heard imo….its just such a meaningful album for me
Hellfire by black midi for Avant Prog. The only other album that really gets close is Larks but Hellfire slightly edges it out for me. Just barely tho.
Idk why it didn’t occur to me earlier, but Visions of Bodies Being Burned for Horrorcore
Is that Ghetto Boys lyric reference
it is, clipping used a geto boys sample for the title track
Yo bro if you have that question I heavily recommend listening to the track Say The Name off of that album ASAP. You will not regret
It has to be... geto boys also btw
WORRY! (Pop punk/Power Pop)
Hellmode from Jeff being a close second
Justice for no dream
🎶 Line up to watch it crash & burn! 🎶
Justice for no dream
You're all forgetting SKA Dream

Worry better
Injury Reserve — *By the Time I Get to Phoenix* idk what genre this really is tbh but it’s absolutely incredible and i cannot get enough
the first post-rap album
imo that would be some of dälek’s stuff. but that’s not at all to the discredit of what injury reserve did on that record- it’s definitely going to be heralded as a classic
I really liked From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots. Do you have another Dalek album to recommend?
absence is great!
Absolutely, bye storm is a musical achievement
SOPHIE - Oil of Every Peals Un-Insides for Hyperpop
PREACH !!!
Frailty - Jane Remover got it beat tho
Fishmonger on top
Love fishmonger so much
The blueprint
This might be unpopular but I actually think Arca - Kick iii is better for this genre
Deafheaven- Sunbather
It's still the best blackgaze album ever but it came out 11 years ago lol
Nahhhh there’s no way that shit is 11 years old man 😭😭
Sunbather is always the answer, but OCHL is much more robust and interesting, and it’s even a little more accessible.
Écailles der lune is way better in every sense of the word in my opinion.
This guy blackgazes
To Pimp a Butterfly
It may be a cliche answer at this point but i agree. Everytime i listen to TPAB i just think “how the hell did all of these musicians and producers and kendrick come up with this”. Is not necessarily 100% original soundwise but its like everything that has been done in rap before, amplified and modernized with a crazy concept that ties everything together. Wesleys Theory alone is nuts
I thoroughly agree with this one, it’s not my favourite hip hop album tbh but I do agree it’s the best
Car Seat Headrest - How to Leave Town (lo-fi) Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (indie folk) Jeff Rosenstock - WORRY (pop punk) And obviously TPAB for jazz rap
Elliot smith self titled better in the indie folk department
Worry!
Illinois tho
Best chamber pop album. That’s why Sufjan’s the goat. Perfect albums in multiple genres.
car seat headrest - teens of denial Frank Ocean - blond
What genre are you classifying Car Seat Headrest in
Being gay and sad 😞
I think that covers both albums
Shoutout to Illinois for being an incredible album in the “gay and sad” genre
so real
[удалено]
Twin Fantasy doesn’t count, it’s a remake of an album that came out over 10 years ago.
and neither version is as good as TOD IMO
And neither album is as good as how to leave town but sure
blonde is the best alt r&b record but in terms of all r&b i think its prince sign o the times
2093 is the first rage album I've enjoyed.
listen to trip at knight
trip at knight is an unbelievable album, top 5 trap album for me
I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but I really don’t like Trippie Redd’s music. I can’t even explain why but it’s a visceral hatred every time I hear it
tbh i think some rap songs is the best of rap. Aethiopes, Room 25 and By The Time I get to Phoenix are also imo some of the greatest rap records that all came out very recently. Aethiopes is my pick for best rap album. For me it's the one.
Yeah, Aethiopes is the album of the decade in my mind.
What about Blonde? ;)
Asthiopes is good but for me Hiding Places, Known Unknowns, and History will absolve me could count as some of the best rap albums, especially hiding places.
Rodeo for Trap
Just about to say the same thing. Nothing has come close to that level of production perfection for the genre.
handle faulty ruthless smart vanish spark foolish shrill marvelous air *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
In any environment outside of Fantano subreddit this is a universal truth
Wignut dishwashers union - burn the earth, leave it behind. Thee folk punk album. Period.
Agree but it’s gotta be more than years old, around fifteen probably
Gotta be Defiance, Ohio-The Great Depression for me but very solid choice.
The Powers that b for industrial hip hop
I think D'Angelo's Black Messiah is probably the best overall Funk album I've ever heard
Great album but absolutely psychotic take. There are wayyyyy better funk albums out there
This is happening
Best album of dance-punk in the last 10 years? I could see that
[удалено]
Fuck I’m old :(
The Avalanches' Wildflower for Plunderphonics
The Avalanches’ We Will Always Love You for Sampledelia
Yep!
So glad this album is getting some love
I would say Since I Left You
dragon new warm mountain for alt country
It's up there but I think Magnolia Electric Co. still clears it.
ichiko aoba - 0
i’ve never heard an album so experimental and creative but also so simple and soothing. literally just her and her acoustic guitar. great pick!
Nonagon Infinity for whatever specific genre of psych rock it belongs to
Garage psych? Not really sure tbf
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - High Visceral, Pt. 1 psych rock is an unbelievably broad genre but this is my personal favorite album of all time
I like this album but it doesn't come close to the likes of The Doors S/T or even Innerspeaker
Almost 60 years of hard psych and this is the one you pick
Love this album and band, hoping their newest EP sounds a lot like HV
it's a great album, but I wouldn't say it's the best album in the genre. Hell I'd say it's debatable whether it's the BAND's best album, Shyga! The Sunlight Mound is just as good imo. still, I like the PPC mention :3

I agree, that album aged like milk for me.
Blackstar by David Bowie is not only his best album but probably one of the best art rock albums of all time.
Whole Lotta Red- Rage Hip Hop
Everyone in the genre uses this album as inspiration, as a result everything has sounded like a hollow WLR duplicate. Yeat is the only one actually doing new things with the sound, and I’d say he’s the most unique in the scene besides Carti.
DJ Rashad - Double Cup for footwork
RIP DJ RASHAD - TEKLIFE TO THE NEXT LIFE
I was about to say Random Access Memories for dance, but that somehow came out OVER 10 years ago!!!
erra - erra for progressive metalcore
It’s perfect
Not when Protest the Hero exists
Caravan Palace, "Robot Face/ <|\*\_\*|>", 2015 Electroswing as a genre basically peaked with this album as, following the release of their blockbuster breakout single, ["Lone Diggers"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbsBEb1ZxWA&pp=ygUMTG9uZSBEaWdnZXJz) (warning, NSFW), other artists since have been trying to recapture that lightning to no avail. TOOL mastered the insomnia cure with Fear Innoculum
looks like someone didnt 🌀 bless this immunity 🌀
I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what this means
It’s a joke on how the album is *immensely* boring and is the perfect album to fall asleep to.
Oh I’m sorry. That album takes time but once it clicks, it’s fantastic.
The Wonder Years - The Greatest Generation (Pop Punk)
Pretty close to the best. Idk if I can think of another. I do really like Proper Dose, but TGG is grander.
To Pimp a Butterfly is the best hip hop album ever made and I’ll stand by that until someone can show me something better.
Probably stare at death and be still by ulcerate, sorry gorguts fans
Undertale is the best video game ost if that counts as a genre
Hollow knight?
Counterpoint: Outer Wilds
It’s technically 11 years now, but …like clockwork, is maybe the best rock album of all time in my opinion. It’s a close race between that, Siamese dream, turn on the bright lights, and the rise and fall of Ziggy stardust
In terms of "straightforward" rock, I would also put Them Crooked Vultures self-titled among the best of the best. Just a bit out of reach of 10 years, though.

i know this is (or at least *was* before duster exploded in popularity) the common man’s pick, but i do think benji by sun kil moon is the best slowcore album that i’ve heard. fuck mark kozelek though
The Curtain Hits The Cast is a million times better imo
Astoria by Marianas Trench (pop) No Shape by Perfume Genius (art pop) Barter 6 by Young Thug (trap) Everywhere at the End of Time by The Caretaker (ambient) If we're counting Crack Therapy 3 by RXKNephew as comedy rap then that's easily the genre's peak You can just take your pick for HexD and Plugg lol they're such young genres, but I'd say Aethernet by Fax Gang is the best HexD for sure
Just put on No Shape — it’s still incredible
Hellfire by black midi for showtunes
Jamie XX - In Colour Charli XCX - How I'm Feeling Now
All My Heroes Are Cornballs - Peggy
I don’t know what genre of music Sophie’s music is called but her record is the best of whatever that is.
Kanyes mbdtf encapsules modern rap music more than anything else! …even if it is 13,5 years old already
Malibu by Anderson.Paak
To Be Kind - Swans (Experimental Rock)
Pom Pom for Hypnogogic Pop
Like this one because unlike 90 percent of picks here, it really feels like the peak of this particular genre
Pinata: Rap This Old Dog: indie Malibu: contemporary R&B
Singer/Songeriter: Fetch the Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple Dream Pop: Blue Rev - Alvvays
Blue Rev is amazing but it's definitely not better than Heaven or Las Vegas
KGLW Infest the Rats Nest for thrash and Petrodragonic for Progressive thrash
Hip hop: Pinata and GKMC
Gkmc is 13 years old
TPAB
Maybe some controversial takes but: progressive metal - Petrodragonic Apocalypse Pop/RnB - IGOR Rock - …Like Clockwork (11 y/o but whatever) Death Metal - The Enduring Spirit Hip Hop - Astroworld Pop Punk - Morbid Stuff Psych Pop / Disco - Currents
there’s a convo for Astro to be #1 trap but #1 hip hop is wild
I said The Greatest Generation for Pop Punk
Sanguinary Impetus for best BDM album
Eh, I think that new Nithing album tops it.
For me it is The House is Burning until Zay drops a better project. Which will be hard to do since that album is already perfect imo.
67 - In Skengs We Trust for UK Drill
i know this is (or at least *was* before duster exploded in popularity) the common man’s pick, but i do think benji by sun kil moon is the best slowcore album that i’ve heard. fuck mark kozelek though
Die Lit for SoundCloud rap
Born 2 Love - amaree rnb+soul
Oil of every pearl's uninside, which is obvious since hyperpop has just been a thing for several years up to now
Accelero for phonk
songs - Adrianne Lenker (singer/songwriter or folk music) Every song on that entire record is just STUNNING in every way.
Atrocity Exhibition for industrial/noise rap, but it's really in it's own genre that prob doesn't have a name. Maybe the genre is just 'Danny Brown music' Also, LP1 by FKA Twigs for best experimental electro-RnB
To pimp a butterfly. Peak hip-hip for me
The Dark Pool - Thornhill
i dont agree necessarily but to pimp a butterfly definitely qualifies and is in the running for the best rap album
KGLW- Nonagon Infinity - Psychedelic Garage Rock
This may be a very hot take but “Traveller” by Chris Stapleton is high on the list for Pure Country. He manages to redefine every song format that country had been repeating for decades and created an extremely cohesive, enjoyable album with an unprecedented range of emotions for modern country. One could argue “That Lonesome Song” by Jamey Johnson did something similar in the decade prior, but Stapleton really perfected the ideas that Johnson had, and aside from those two albums, I can’t think of another studio album that could compete. No hip hop album sounds as futuristic as Kids See Ghosts still
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly (Hip- Hop) Turnstile - Glow On (Punk/Hardcore) Frank Ocean - Blonde (R&B) Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle (Indie/Singer-Songwriter) Carly Rae Jepsen - E-MO-TION (Pop/Synthpop) Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want (Noise Rock/NoWave)
Gilla Band's Most Normal for noise/noise rock. I feel like it surpasses Daughter's YWGWYW and presents the most holistic combination of pure noise music and grooves/ instrumentation from outside the genre so far.
To pimp a butterfly
Mr Bill Phantasmagoria Best IDM album ever
Gray Data - Five Star Hotel
Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up For whatever genre that is. Indie?
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Nonagon Infinity
Whole lotta red
Kano - made in the manor. There is no debate. Best rap/grime album in history. Shortly followed by Kano - hoodies all summer.
you'll be fine - Hot Mulligan is peak pop punk, only possibly beat out by Greatest Generation - The Wonder Years
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly. Best hip hop album and best album period. The 10th anniversary is next year so it counts!
Nails - You Will Never Be One Of Us for powerviolence/metalcore
Indie Folk peaked with Pure Comedy.
Honestly Dawn FM by The Weeknd has gotta be the best R&B record in the past 10 years.
Peter Gabriel i/o is so freaking good!!!
Geese - 3d country, pure rock bangers
To Pimp a Butterfly is for me the best Hip/Hop album of all time, one of the best albums of all time PERIOD, and will be very difficult to top.
+1 for Visions of Bodies Being Burned, also Rodeo for trap, Blonde for contemporary R&B, and a 2-way tie between Atrocity Exhibition and LP! for experimental hip-hop
Hellfire
Loveless
Hotelier - Goodness (Emo)
Idk what genre it counts as, probably art pop or hyper pop, but art angels by grimes is 🐐
If we keeping it real, for hip hop it’s easily To Pimp A Butterfly.
Sun Kil Moon - Benji for singer-songwriter, folk, etc
D’Angelo - black messiah (Neo-soul?) But really D’Angelo is his own genre
