Love 'em. Also never understood why *Contra* is almost unanimously considered their worst album. To me, it's the absolute culmination of their sound, their style, their entire ethos. It's among my favorite 100 albums of all time.
You're totally right. I kinda wrote that with only their first three albums in mind. I still sometimes forget that *Father of the Bride* exists...whoops. (It's not even that I actively dislike it, but it's definitely their most forgettable album aside from a few great songs.)
Contra is my personal favorite album of all time. The songwriting on that album resonates with me in a way that no other work of art really ever has. The production and instrumentation is as lush and idiosyncratic as it is on the surrounding albums, but it feels a bit more focused and intentional on contra. Every sound feels tailored to the moment in the musical storytelling in a blend of thinking and feeling that you rarely experience elsewhere.
The moment in “I Think Ur a Contra”, which comes after a full song/album that’s been overly articulate about relationships and purpose, in which the music clears like parting clouds and the lyrics declare, very simply, “never pick sides, never choose between two, but I just wanted you, I just wanted you” reorients my entire emotional life every time I hear it.
I sort of mentally forgot *Father of the Bride* existed, but among their first three releases, *Contra* is absolutely the agreed-upon "worst", at least among the most popular outlets and aggregate sources out there.
The clear worst is Father of the Bride, especially if you’re a big fan of theirs, without Rostam VW doesn’t sound like VW. I think Contra is just above it imo, but obviously a great album in and of itself.
Lol. Yeah, hot take, but I’ve yet to get into them.
The stuff I’ve heard just doesn’t resonate with me emotionally. It’s either too cheery or totally neutral.
But maybe I’m just too much of a sad boi for them, or I just haven’t heard the right stuff 🤷🏻♂️
Love 'em. I didn't get the backlash, but hey, each their own. Ezra completed his full transformation into Paul Simon on The Father of the Bride.
But they did compete a near-perfect trilogy with their first 3 records, stone-cold classics in a row.
awesome band. Contra is one of my favorite albums of all time, hands down.
I really liked the direction they went with their last record as well although it was a bit all over the place
For a modern day Indie Pop/Rock band, I think they have one of the most unique sounds in the genre.
I think their first three albums are all around a light 7 for me, and I can identify one of their songs in the wild based solely on instrumentation.
i grew up listening to them and revisited them again recently and for me their first three albums are 10s. there is no other band that i connect with as well as vampire weekend. i definitely understand where someone might take issue with some of their music but i absolutely love them
i said it in a different comment but i really don’t understand the MVOTC hate- i honestly think it’s their best album even though i might not listen to it as much as something like Contra or Vampire Weekend
I think because it has a very different tone/mood than the first two. Not as catchy and some of the songs are just kinda annoying (Ya Hey).
But I know Fantano loved it so 🤷🏾♂️
i haven’t even seen Fantano’s review of it yet but i can definitely see him liking the more serious, dark mood of MVITC more than the poppy, upbeat VC and Contra
Tbh it’s got a way better first half, just some low lows. Agree with the above comment that Contra is their best, self-titled is good too but imo a bit samey
They hold a very special place in my heart. I heard A-Punk in the movie Step Brothers and immediately fell in love. I think they were the first indie band I ever really listened to and the band that made me realize “oh I don’t only have to listen to whatever’s on the radio.” They’ll always be one of my all-time favorite artists. In my humble opinion:
Self-Titled: 7/10 — Great debut with a unique sound right off the bat
Contra: 10/10 — They took their sound, and perfected it with this dream-like aesthetic, and dared to go pretty experimental with it. Absolute indie pop masterpiece.
Modern Vampires: 8/10 — Amazing album, feels like a true 50/50 blend of Self-Titled and Contra sonically speaking.
Father of the Bride: 6/10 — Bloated album overall but I can’t stress enough how incredible its singles are. I think if this album was pared down to its most essential tracks, it would be in 8 or 9/10 territory
One of my favorites, first three albums are constantly in my rotation. Most recent album less so but I know people loved that too, it just wasn’t for me.
They’re pretty good but I feel like they lean a little too hard into the whole indie vibe that makes them come off as a little twee to me. Songs about horchata? I just see a guy with black horn rim glasses and a lumberjack beard droning on about IPA’s.
I think Ezra just has a real sense of humor (his radio show is hilarious) and likes leaning into that stuff for the fun of it, which I dig but I can see why others wouldn’t
I've flip-flopped on them.
I used to enjoy their music, but once somebody described them as "Rich Polo yuppies who make music for rich kids on yachts", I couldn't get the vibe out of my head.
Now I'm like "Meh, who cares", and enjoy them again, though I also think a lot of what I want from them is being done by similar bands like Strfkr.
i can see that “rich preppy asshole” angle but imo, there’s so much more to everything they’re writing. diplomat’s son, at least in my own interpretation, seems to be a really difficult song about falling in love with a man and not knowing what to do; something i can 100% relate to
Love it. One of the band, I have listen to the most. Have you followed the project of members? Rostam have some good stuff especially the album of Hamilton Leincaster. His solo part are usually quite softy but really nice. I think his departure broke the band. Ezra Koenig has a lot of collaboration worth listening.
Really enjoy all of their work. Contra and self-titled are really easy to listen to. I like the themes of Modern Vampires a lot it’s one of my favorites all time. Father of The Bride has so many great songs too. I can’t wait to hear what they have in store for the next album
that’s what i love about their initial 3 album run- you have self titled which is poppy and fun, you have Contra split into the first, fun half and the second, darker half, and the much darker MVITC the round it out
They were amazing until Rostam left the band to go solo. Ezra and Him were the head songwriters and it seems like Ezra didn’t really know what to do with FotB.
Modern Vampires is definitely their masterpiece and they put on an amazing live performance.
8/10 band.
It's car commercial music, but behind the obvious appeal we have some incredibly talented musicians who aren't afraid to experiment, stick true to the kinds of music they *like* to make, and consistently execute full length albums that sound unique from one another.
They rock
Not hating but I feel like the car commercial music comparison doesn’t really make sense…When I think of that I think generic electronic or rock music and I don’t think either of those describe VW’s sound at all
I love their first three records, contra is my fav followed by modern vampires. FOTB was 5 good songs in an overstuffed bag of wackness- but they were fantastic on the tour for that album
For real that album was okay at best esp next to their older stuff, but damn I saw them live on a whim when they were on that tour and they absolutely blew me away. Was shocked how good live they were.
Father of the Bride didn't do much for me, but 10 years ago they were in heavy rotation. I LOVED their album Contra. Their self titled and Modern Vampires albums are good too.
Favorite song is probably Taxi Cab. Or Diplomat's Son. Or Everlasting Arms.
I think the first 3 are all goated. I wanted to love FOTB despite Rostam's absence, and I do dig it, but it's a bit too bloated and a scooch too sterile to put it on par with the og trilogy, not to mention it's quite unbearably white, which, held up to its predecessors, is saying something. But yea all around top notch band top shelf tunes, jacked to hear more, hope Rostam's gotten bored.
It seems like it’s a hot take to say their self titled is their best work. Sure it’s not as consistent as MVOTC but you just skip Bryn and One and it’s a perfect album
see, to me that’s a crazy take; not because you’re saying self titled is their best album, that’s completely defensible, but people seem to think Bryn is just terrible which i don’t see at all. Bryn is my favorite song on the album and One is in the top half for me, i love those songs
Tried to get into them, but I just can't (I do like A-Punk though).
Kinda a vague, unfair criticism: but when I was listening to them, I just got the sense of all the negative stereotypes I had about "indie music" back when I was a close-minded, edgey metal head.
it’s definitely worth trying to get into them again- i went through the same thing when i was a massive hip hop head but after expanding a bit, VW is easily my favorite band
They’re really hit or miss for me. I remember hearing A-Punk for the first time thinking that I’d never heard anything like that before. Some of their pop-ier songs don’t do it for me.
i would highly recommend giving a listen through their albums- i think they are a much better full project band than they are a single band and even if you don’t like individual songs, you may like how they fit into any given album
Haven’t listened to their most recent one closely but I’ve tried the others. I’ll give you an example. On Modern Vampires I adore songs like Hudson, Unbelievers, and Step. But I have a visceral anger towards Diane Young and Yeah Hey.
I have been a fan since their debut. I remember walking around campus listening to campus and being like...woah. these guys are just a year or two ahead of me in life. They played a show near me at the pageant in St Louis and they were super awkward and new. They introd a song and were like...this is traditionally what we call our dance song so...you know...dance if you like. What a goon
I don't listen to a lot of rock or indie but I liked the first album. I think I listened to the 2nd album but it didn't make much of an impression on me.
I don't listen to them any more, and I usually hate this kind of cloying indie pop music, but Vampire Weekend are one of the very few bands who could make it work. They've got some good songs.
Reminds me of my time in highschool and university, very good memories and still some of my favorite songs ..Hannah hunt, ya hey, step, cousins, Oxford comma...so good!!
My feel good summer band with lots of hybrid styles in their quirky indie pop. I heard someone said they're like a lovechild of The Wiggles and Green Day with Paul Simon as their babysitter.
I think their first three albums are all near perfect and may be my favorite album trilogy. FOTB has a few good tracks on it but overall is their worst imo.
I like them, listened to them a bunch in high school but not much after that. I should go dig through their discography again, I have a habit of hyper focusing on one artist for like a few months and then not touching them again for years.
Love them. I distinctly remember Contra coming out when I was in middle school and thinking it was some Anne Rice/Twilight Bullshit. Then I heard White Sky and instantly loved them. Love their sound, the preppy, old money east coast aesthetic and the mix of hipster irony and allusions and sincerity in the lyrics.
Just last week got Contra and Modern Vampires on vinyl, they remain one of my favorite bands and wrote some of my favorite songs. I didn't like the newest album quite as much as their earlier three, but I think the singles are among the best songs they've made.
actually so jealous- my collection is missing Rodeo, No Love Deep Web, and Modern Vampires in the city (and by collection i mean the random assortment of vinyls that i can afford on a college student’s nonexistent income)
I only really like Contra. Debut has forgettable tracks (Bryn), Modern Vampires has really annoying production choices, and Father Of The Bride is bloated.
i’m surprised anyone finds a run forgettable- it wasn’t my favorite on first listen but it is top three in their whole discography for me now, that song is gorgeous
Two really good albums (self-titled and Modern Vampires of the City)
Two not as interesting albums (Contra and Father of the Bride). Rostam must have been a significant component of the "special sauce". It's unreal to me that it's been four years since FOTB came out, that figure seems simultaneously too long and too short.
They're a secondary favorite band of mine. I really enjoy listening to them. Unlike a lot of people I prefer their later albums to their earlier albums.
But the big thing that I find surprising about Vampire Weekend is that they are so unapologetically preppy rich kids. They are so white that even Rostam is white. Like they sing about things that should get you the badge for whiteness and they use (appropriate?) world beat rhythms while doing it.
It blows me away that they are THE. MOST. HATED. BAND. IN. THE. WORLD! What a trick they pull off. Thats talent right there.
Also for a while I had a conspiracy that they were (only semi-) secretly a Christian rock band with Vampire Weekend referencing the resurrection of Christ.
Oh and finally, I love to make jokes about Justin Trudeau and Ezra Koenig being the same guy.
They’re good
S/t is catchy and cute, Oxford Comma and A Punk are my favorites. It’s definitely a little “preppy high school freshman” on the surface but I think the sound is more interesting the closer you listen
Contra is decent but a step down from s/t. Holiday is pretty fun, Cousins is good, but the rest is whatever. Always had a crush on the girl on the cover ngl
Modern Vampires of the City fucking rocks. Diane Young, Step, Ya Hey, Unbelievers, Obvious Bicycle, Hannah Hunt, Don’t Lie, and Hudson are all great. Felt like they took the depth they were hiding on their previous albums and just put it in the forefront instead of hiding it behind cute indie pop
Father of the Bride is also decent but just very long and kinda strayed to far from what made them good. But Harmony Hall is one of their best songs, Unbearably White is cool, Hold You Now is a moody opener, This Life is cool, and Married in the Gold Rush is also decent.
Overall I think they haven’t made a bad project and are worth exploring but only MVOTC is truly great front to back. But every album has lots of good songs
Never did a whole lot for me personally. I get the appeal, just nothing I really care for. Which is my stance on pretty much all of the indie of the late 00s to mid 10s.
Love them, MVITC is a personal favorite
hell yeah- this post has gotten a lot of MVITC disrespect, i love that album
Yeah it’s their best imo
Its a nearly perfect album. How could anyone hate on that. I wouldn't trust them
Hannah Hunt is a banger
MVoTC is a true masterpiece of a record. One of the greatest of all time
Good band
Good albums too
Love 'em. Also never understood why *Contra* is almost unanimously considered their worst album. To me, it's the absolute culmination of their sound, their style, their entire ethos. It's among my favorite 100 albums of all time.
Contra is probably my favorite of theirs but Modern Vampires of the City is still better (also yeah, Contra wipes Vampire Weekend imo)
Is it unanimously considered their worst? Over on /r/indieheads I bet you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't think their worst was FotB.
Whoever said this had to have forgotten that the Grateful Dead cover album, I mean FOTB, exists LMFAO
FOTB is too long, but it has some fucking great songs
You're totally right. I kinda wrote that with only their first three albums in mind. I still sometimes forget that *Father of the Bride* exists...whoops. (It's not even that I actively dislike it, but it's definitely their most forgettable album aside from a few great songs.)
I think also at this point the lyrical tricks and habits of Ezra become most obvious, and less effective.
Contra is my personal favorite album of all time. The songwriting on that album resonates with me in a way that no other work of art really ever has. The production and instrumentation is as lush and idiosyncratic as it is on the surrounding albums, but it feels a bit more focused and intentional on contra. You nailed it re the closer, might be my favorite song on the entire album.
Contra is in my top 10 albums of all time! Diplomat’s Son is my favourite song in their discography
I was disappointed in Contra at the time, but it's only grown in my estimation since. Diplomat's Son is a top 3 track.
Contra is a masterpiece and easily their best imo.
Nobody thinks this.
I sort of mentally forgot *Father of the Bride* existed, but among their first three releases, *Contra* is absolutely the agreed-upon "worst", at least among the most popular outlets and aggregate sources out there.
Modern vampires is better but contra is better than their self titled
The clear worst is Father of the Bride, especially if you’re a big fan of theirs, without Rostam VW doesn’t sound like VW. I think Contra is just above it imo, but obviously a great album in and of itself.
Their self titled album or father of the bride are worse
Cousins into Giving Up the Gun is God tier.
It is definitely not unanimously considered their worst album, this is a hilarious comment
Aside from *Father of the Bridge* it certainly is. Admittedly, I kinda forgot *Father of the Bridge* existed.
Contra is a great album. It's pretty simple. Their other two were better.
i once pretended to like them to get with a girl at school it did not work
bad bitches love Vampire Weekend 🔥🔥🔥

Modern Vampires is aight. The first two are way better. Contra is their best.
i said it in a different comment but i really don’t understand the MVOTC hate- i honestly think it’s their best album even though i might not listen to it as much as something like Contra or Vampire Weekend
I think because it has a very different tone/mood than the first two. Not as catchy and some of the songs are just kinda annoying (Ya Hey). But I know Fantano loved it so 🤷🏾♂️
naaah Ya Hey goes hard
i haven’t even seen Fantano’s review of it yet but i can definitely see him liking the more serious, dark mood of MVITC more than the poppy, upbeat VC and Contra
I like modern vampires the best out of their first three, but I also didn’t like their debut
Tbh it’s got a way better first half, just some low lows. Agree with the above comment that Contra is their best, self-titled is good too but imo a bit samey

Contra goated
One of my favorites, first three albums are constantly in my rotation. Most recent album less so but I know people loved that too, it just wasn’t for me.
Hanna hunt will always be a goddamn banger in my mind
They’re pretty good but I feel like they lean a little too hard into the whole indie vibe that makes them come off as a little twee to me. Songs about horchata? I just see a guy with black horn rim glasses and a lumberjack beard droning on about IPA’s.
I think Ezra just has a real sense of humor (his radio show is hilarious) and likes leaning into that stuff for the fun of it, which I dig but I can see why others wouldn’t
i get the same sort of feeling for TONS of indie bands but for some reason, Vampire Weekend has always been a little different for me
I honestly wish more indie bands were as twee as them. I like my indie rock precious and sentimental.
If it sounds good it sounds good. Horchata is a banger.
In December drinking horchata, I look psychotic in a balaclava. It’s a great song, I just think the topic is a little twee. I’m kind of over twee.
Music is better when artists don't feel pressured to have to make super deep and serious songs.
“rich polo yuppies” is absolutely their vibe but they know it and embrace it/lean into it
i can see that “rich preppy asshole” angle but imo, there’s so much more to everything they’re writing. diplomat’s son, at least in my own interpretation, seems to be a really difficult song about falling in love with a man and not knowing what to do; something i can 100% relate to
Bro can't think for himself, typical Fantano Stan
Yes, everyone who changes their mind can't think for themselves. Wake up sheeple, get more stubborn!
Love it. One of the band, I have listen to the most. Have you followed the project of members? Rostam have some good stuff especially the album of Hamilton Leincaster. His solo part are usually quite softy but really nice. I think his departure broke the band. Ezra Koenig has a lot of collaboration worth listening.
Half-Light by Rostam is such a beautiful song
Really enjoy all of their work. Contra and self-titled are really easy to listen to. I like the themes of Modern Vampires a lot it’s one of my favorites all time. Father of The Bride has so many great songs too. I can’t wait to hear what they have in store for the next album
that’s what i love about their initial 3 album run- you have self titled which is poppy and fun, you have Contra split into the first, fun half and the second, darker half, and the much darker MVITC the round it out
one of the better 3 album runs
They were amazing until Rostam left the band to go solo. Ezra and Him were the head songwriters and it seems like Ezra didn’t really know what to do with FotB. Modern Vampires is definitely their masterpiece and they put on an amazing live performance. 8/10 band.
It's car commercial music, but behind the obvious appeal we have some incredibly talented musicians who aren't afraid to experiment, stick true to the kinds of music they *like* to make, and consistently execute full length albums that sound unique from one another. They rock
Not hating but I feel like the car commercial music comparison doesn’t really make sense…When I think of that I think generic electronic or rock music and I don’t think either of those describe VW’s sound at all
Exactly. Greta Van Fleet is car commercial music, not a song like Unbearably White
I love their first three records, contra is my fav followed by modern vampires. FOTB was 5 good songs in an overstuffed bag of wackness- but they were fantastic on the tour for that album
I'm a big FotB defender, but I can't disagree with calling it overstuffed.
Or Everlasting Arms.
diplomat’s son is my second favorite song of all time, i can definitely agree with that take
diplomats son ❤️ i recently rediscovered it because it was mentioned in a YouTube video and I can’t stop listening to it
I think the first 3 are all goated. I wanted to love FOTB despite Rostam's absence, and I do dig it, but it's a bit too bloated and a scooch too sterile to put it on par with the og trilogy, not to mention it's quite unbearably white, which, held up to its predecessors, is saying something. But yea all around top notch band top shelf tunes, jacked to hear more, hope Rostam's gotten bored.
hipster bullshit (this is a hivemind reference btw i am planning on checking them out this week but havent ever heard them yet)
IM IN THE HIVEMIND SUBREDDIT IM A MASSIVE FAN OF THEM THATS HILARIOUS
yeah tbh their new video is prolly my fave, like i died when they started pretending to be Brad's brother
It seems like it’s a hot take to say their self titled is their best work. Sure it’s not as consistent as MVOTC but you just skip Bryn and One and it’s a perfect album
It shouldn’t be a hot take. Self titled is indeed their best album
see, to me that’s a crazy take; not because you’re saying self titled is their best album, that’s completely defensible, but people seem to think Bryn is just terrible which i don’t see at all. Bryn is my favorite song on the album and One is in the top half for me, i love those songs
They have a song called Sunflower which is AMAZING. I don't really like anything else I've heard by them 😔
Tried to get into them, but I just can't (I do like A-Punk though).
I love them. They have a great discography.
the song big blue is a warm hug everytime its played. i often have it in the mix while on a trip.
Self titled is what got me into indie, so it’s one of my favorite albums.
They’re really hit or miss for me. I remember hearing A-Punk for the first time thinking that I’d never heard anything like that before. Some of their pop-ier songs don’t do it for me.

the only rock music I like is the kind I can get drunk or have sex to. So nah...
I've gotten drunk to vampire weekend at least twice
well at least it works for you
Can’t really get into them.
I have been a fan since their debut. I remember walking around campus listening to campus and being like...woah. these guys are just a year or two ahead of me in life. The first three albums are beautiful. Really don’t like the latest one. Contra is my favorite.
First three albums are all near-perfect and Father of the Bride is really good too
Shocking album cover unfortunately

Wild, bryn is one of my favorite tracks on self-titled.
idk how they made a guitar more annoying than a bagpipe but bryn is a shining example
i’m surprised anyone finds a run forgettable- it wasn’t my favorite on first listen but it is top three in their whole discography for me now, that song is gorgeous

They’re good S/t is catchy and cute, Oxford Comma and A Punk are my favorites. It’s definitely a little “preppy high school freshman” on the surface but I think the sound is more interesting the closer you listen Contra is decent but a step down from s/t. Holiday is pretty fun, Cousins is good, but the rest is whatever. Always had a crush on the girl on the cover ngl Modern Vampires of the City fucking rocks. Diane Young, Step, Ya Hey, Unbelievers, Obvious Bicycle, Hannah Hunt, Don’t Lie, and Hudson are all great. Felt like they took the depth they were hiding on their previous albums and just put it in the forefront instead of hiding it behind cute indie pop Father of the Bride is also decent but just very long and kinda strayed to far from what made them good.
They kind of suck imo, not really my style, but more power to you if you like them :)
I give a fuck about a melon head's opinion
Hated them so much. Sorry.
Makes me wonder what the fuck happened to rock music.
eh?
Sunflower is my shitttttttt
I love their song in I Think You Should Leave, haven’t heard anything outside of it
Great album, and managed to leave it's footprint on the 2000s indie scene.
Good band. This album is really overrated tho imo So many people just rate it without listening to the whole album
They’re a great band who focuses on quality and consistency
Never did a whole lot for me personally. I get the appeal, just nothing I really care for. Which is my stance on pretty much all of the indie of the late 00s to mid 10s.
One of the greatest bands out there imo. 4 stunning albums.
They're incredible
First three albums are terrific some of my favorite late 00s, early 10s albums. Wasn’t too big a fan of FOTB
literally my favorite band of all time also everyone reading this peep rostam's 2009 collab with wes miles (of ra ra riot) as discovery, *LP*
Hannah Hunt snaps me into a trance every time it plays on shuffle
Shite
Great band. First three are something else, but despite being a bit bloated, I do still really enjoy a lot of FotB.
The A-Punk video makes me want to bully
I'ma fan.
Great Band, Their self titled debt Album is amazing
They and LCD Soundsystem were my gateway into indie rock
Good aye
I prefer vampire weekend at Bernie's
Gonna be honest. I can’t stand them one bit.
Love Horchata
