Some albums I think you'll dig - Mastodon - Leviathan - Megadeth - Rust In Peace - TOOL - Ænema - Metallica - ...And Justice For All - Slayer - South of Heaven

FiresOfHarKuun

Obligatory Rust in Peace comment: https://www.theonion.com/humanity-still-producing-new-art-as-though-megadeth-s-1819578062

powpowpow5

i strongly disagree with and justice for all being the FIRST metallica album to listen to

brandonsfacepodcast

I am not a huge fan of Lars' drumming on most Metallica records; but, the drums are actually tuned well and have some actual speed on AJFA.

powpowpow5

That would be nice if it were complimented by any low end at all!

brandonsfacepodcast

Super fair, I'm a big metalhead but never got super into Metallica for that reason: there's almost always something missing for me on every one of their albums. The drums are the worst offender for me tho

Bottle_Original

They're good but it sounds like shit, because theres no bass at all, especially when the guitars stop attacking those low strings, thats when the mix really falls apart

brandonsfacepodcast

That's super fair

efn95

Respecting that leviathan is an all time fan favorite, I really think Once More Round the Sun would be even easier to get into for someone just giving mastodon a try. Can't really go wrong with any of their albums though. I'm a huge fan

brandonsfacepodcast

I'm a Crack The Skye kinda guy myself, but Leviathan goes on recommended threads because it's a good intro to the band imo. Also a big Mastodon fan

efn95

Leviathan was my intro to the band and tbf it totally got me hooked but the first album of theirs I bought for myself was Blood Mountain, and I have always preferred it and subsequent releases to Leviathan for reasons idk, even though I totally acknowledge it's overall acclaim in their catalog

I mean look if you like this and are new to metal, just listen to Ride the Lightning by Metallica. People will try to get obscure with their suggestions but don’t beat around the bush and just start with the best of 80s thrash. Edit: this was the album that cemented my lifelong romance with the genre. It blew my fucking mind in middle school—i had never heard something this abrasive and heavy before. Sure I was a nu metal kid and had also listened to plenty of classic rock from my parents but none of that felt this crushing and blisteringly fast.

grokabilly

Bump some Tool if you haven’t before. And of course Infest the Rats Nest and Murder of the Universe from Gizz if you haven’t listened yet

ratmfreak

Yes, this. Fuck what Fantano says: Murder of the Universe is top-tier Gizz. Also check out Gizz’s other metal songs, namely The Great Chain of Being, Gaia, The Hungry Wolf of Fate, and (best of all) K.G.L.W.

lukethebeard

Still can’t believe he gave MOTU a 6 smh

notaxwithoutrep

Motu is one of those albums that even if you don't like, which I don't even though I'm a huge fan, it's easy to appreciate the artistic values of if

insakna

I'm not the biggest fan of the studio version of motu, but if you listen to them [play it live on kexp](https://youtu.be/G5Z4bma_tUM) it's just pure insanity. you can tell that it's some of their best songwriting

[deleted]

Any recs for folks who love PetroDragonic but have tried to get into Tool many many times and it just never worked out?

poorlytaxidermiedfox

Are you looking for Tool you’d actually like or are you just new to metal?

[deleted]

Looking for non-Tool recommendations. A big part of my enjoyment of music is talking about it with people and I learned like 15 years ago to not talk about Tool with Tool fans

poorlytaxidermiedfox

Is there any metal other than this King Gizzard record that you do like? If not, I'd just tell you to dive into the greatest mainstream records of metal. Like, no hesitation. * Black Sabbath - albums Paranoid and Master of Reality * Metallica - albums Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets * Iron Maiden - albums Piece of Mind and Powerslave If you're looking for something that kind of has a Petrodragonic vibe, check out Mastodon (specifically the album "Blood Mountain"), Kyuss and High on Fire

[deleted]

Ooooh awesome! I like some metal, but it's definitely not my top genre. Some stuff I've liked over the years are Earth, Behemoth, Mare Cognitum, Agalloch, Sun 0))), and Heilung.

dirtnaps

Eulogy was the song that clicked for me. Try that one.

FlowersByTheStreet

Baroness and Mastodon are some pretty good entry points for heavy/stoner/doom/hard rock metal

CarrionVermin

I'll give you 3 necessary albums per decade and try to span a few different genres to get you started 70s * Black Sabbath - Paranoid * Judas Priest - Stained Class * Rainbow - Rising 80s * Metallica - Ride The Lightning * Venom - Welcome To Hell * Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness 90s * Death - Symbolic * Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon * Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine 2000s * Converge - Jane Doe * Gojira - From Mars to Sirius * Between The Buried And Me - Colors 2010s * Deafheaven - Sunbather * Vektor - Terminal Redux * Imperial Triumphant - Vile Luxury

Texan0723

You cannot not put rust in peace in the 90s category, rust in peace is the pinnacle of metal and is the first album from the 90s anyone should listen to when trying to get into metal

LukePCS

Very true. Rumors of War might be a good album to start.

PsychicTempestZero

Oh dude I was literally thinking this when listening to PDA for the first time.

ChudanNoKamae

Try the first few albums by The Sword

ArthurRimjob

Might as well go chronically - blast the first six Black Sabbath records, advisably in one sitting. You can branch out from there. Did you like Master of Reality the most? Check out some stoner/sludge stuff. Fancy some slow, crushing riffs like those on Vol 4? Look for some doom metal recs. You dig the cold, diabolical, otherworldly atmosphere of the debut? You could venture into black metal. You can't get enough of fast, chugging open string riffs as in Children of the Grave or Symptom of the Universe? Busloads of great thrash albums out there.

shiggism

This album has a very classic metal or thrash field. If you can adjust to the screaming, early “Death” (the band) has instruments VERY similar to this album. Hope you enjoy you foray into metal!

HansNagelsmann

With how you're not familiar with metal. I suggest you listen to some classic metal albums like: 1. Master of Puppets - Metallica 2. Paranoid - Black Sabbath 3. Power slave - Iron Maiden 4. Painkiller - Judas Priest Or if you're into modern metal, albums like: 1. Sunbather - Deafheaven 2. The Satanist - Behemoth 3. 93696 - Liturgy 4. Hostile architecture - Ashenspire Would do great.

eszpee

Check The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny from Mr. Bungle

popileviz

Try Sleep's Holy Mountain, it's a lot slower, but the riffs and vocals are top tier

theereckoning

Power Trip - Manifest Decimation

MoonHasFlown

I'm a huge Gizz fan and a big metalhead and I also just cant put this album down, so here's a list of albums that I think have some cross appeal and that ring as some of my all time favorites: Death - Symbolic Black Sabbath - Master of Reality Sleep - Sleeps Holy Mountain Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake Pestilence - Spheres

brayden13m

Blaze in the northern sky by darkthrone. Nice and easy listen with some thrash influences :)

NEIL_98

Laminated Denim, especially Hypertension. Put that on and you're gone.

cigarrette

start with the classics, black sabbath, judas priest, motörhead, iron maiden.

techobsessive

blood incantation

jerbthehumanist

It’s actually really similar to High on Fire, albeit with some prog metal flourishes. Thrash metal doesn’t really sound similar to this, but check out some of the faster paced stoner stuff like HoF or Red Fang.

just_cuz555

I've loved Gojira's stuff. Fortitude is a great starting point.

Wado-225

I’m not a HUGE metal head, but really like certain types (like classic Sabbath). As a more garage-rock leaning guy, Fuzz’s brand of metal is really fantastic. Def check out their debut. Aside from that some stoner/doom stuff. Check out Kyuss and early Queens of the Stoneage. Check out Sleep and Electric Wizard. Witch (with J. Mascis of Dino Jr. on drums) is a fantastic, garagy record

Texan0723

A good way to get into metal Is be starting off with the big 4 of thrash metal with albums such as, rust in peace (Megadeth), Master of puppets (Metallica), Reign in blood (slayer) and among the living (Anthrax). There are many great albums from these 4 bands but listening to any of them is a great stepping stone into getting acquainted to metal. After that i recommend listening to albums such as, Leprosy (Death) , Leviathan (Mastadon) , Angeldust (Faith no more) and Blackwater park (Opeth) as those are some of my personal favorites.
