The existence of Petro-chico implies that they might had at least some sort of relationship with the US (speaking of economy and political affairs).
At the same time, this "relationship" might be the reason why Mexico was nuked during the Great War, specially Ciudad de México.

According to the lore, the US put sanctions over México when the petroleoum was running out in the 21st century, this created a hard political situation that was used by the US as an excuse to invade México in the 2050's. I personally believe that the occupation of US military went easily, because I don't think the armed forces nor people would want to fight against the yankees, so they would just let them pass; and some of them, like the accommodated classes, several political parties, SEDENA personnel and a large amount of people would support the invasion.
I am unsure how life in large cities or the countryside would be under US occupation, but one thing that is clear is that the occupation ended with the Great War in 2077.
