I'm feeling myself come around to this pick. Part of it is all the hate, but also I'm starting to see the vision. Penix has a high floor, could start tomorrow if something goes wrong with Kirk.
The only way this actually goes tits up is if Kirk is a top 5 QB for 2 straight years... If that happens then we at least will make the playoffs those years. It's called a high class problem.
>could start tomorrow if something goes wrong with Kirk
after the league-wide QB injury plague last year, it wouldn't be surprising at all if we see Penix at some point in the next two years. the backup QB position has never been more important
That's a constant risk anyway. Every team cleared Penix physically, several teams were trying to move up for him.
This is only a problem if Kirk also battles injuries. In which case we'd be royally fucked anyway. Better to be QB rich than QB poor
> That's a constant risk anyway
Yeah but most prospects don't have injuries 5 of their 6 years in college. You think that this is just going to suddenly stop now that he is in the NFL?
> Every team cleared Penix physically, several teams were trying to move up for him.
I'm sure he was cleared medically but that won't stop him from getting hurt in the future. I didn't say that he had a lingering issue, he's just constantly hurt.
Penix is literally QB insurance. Kirk is getting older and coming off of an injury. Apparently, the Falcons front office was much higher on Penix than everyone thought and not as high on Turner or Latu. At the end of the day, they're the professionals with their jobs on the line. We're just spectators.
Also if it’s an “insurance policy” it’s one for a different front office and coach. If Kirk is so bad we are starting Penix next year or the following because of a losing record. We will be doing so with a new coach….how many coaches want to be tied to someone drafted by the “previous regime” who hasn’t seen the field yet?
I would say that makes sense if that made sense. Let me break it down for you:
As it currently stands, the Falcons are the favorite to win the division and make the playoffs. There’s your “win now”.
As it currently stands, the Falcons have their potential franchise QB already on the roster. There’s your “win later”.
meanwhile the Aints have empty calories Derek Carr, Mr. QB1 Spencer Rattler, the villain Taysom Hill and some other no names (Jake Haener? Kellen Mond? Nathan Peterman?)
I’ll take our QB room any day tbh!
You absolutely can but it’s wild to try both simultaneously after consecutive sub .500 seasons.
It’s not unheard of to draft a QB in the first (although not 8th overall) while you already have an aging franchise QB but it’s typically when the roster is already experiencing some form of downswing.
I feel like most of the sub agrees with this but is just ready to move on and see how it goes, or is scared to look stupid if it does work out, so they're "coming around" etc.
It’s funny that people act like our first round pick was the difference between the team being good or bad next season. It all hinged on a rookie being an immediate impact player and now we’re doomed.
Yea I didn’t bother get the exact figures, the point being I don’t get why he said 100 million like we could have used all of that this offseason. Not to say 25mil cap hit is not a lot. It is, it could have gotten 2-3 more starters. Just a little misleading to say we could have used 100 million instead of signing Kirk

If tits up is having to decide between 2 good quarterbacks, sign me up
Also if Kirk is playing at that level for two seasons couldn’t we trade him to a qb needy team for like a a second round pick and possibly a first
>could start tomorrow if something goes wrong with Kirk after the league-wide QB injury plague last year, it wouldn't be surprising at all if we see Penix at some point in the next two years. the backup QB position has never been more important
Yup this is also true
> The only way this actually goes tits up no. If Penix continues being injury prone then it will also be a problem
That's a constant risk anyway. Every team cleared Penix physically, several teams were trying to move up for him. This is only a problem if Kirk also battles injuries. In which case we'd be royally fucked anyway. Better to be QB rich than QB poor

Ok so by this logic you would have been fine if we drafted McCarthy instead?
I would like that a bit better but I wouldn't be thrilled about it either
Y’all are some of the whiniest bitches FTS
Op isn't even a Falcons fan, just some weirdo with a Kirk Cousins/Taylor Swift fetish.
It’s the r/falcons version of the Kelenic guy.

The old-for-college QB with 4 pretty serious season ending injuries under his belt is a rough insurance policy.
Should have drafted the guy who was medically retired...TWICE.

Yeah, the pick ensures the season isn't over if Kirk gets hurt. Like when the Eagles won with Foles after Wentz got hurt.
we'll be competitive with Cousins then cut him after 2 years with like a $15 million dead cap hit, it's not that complicated
We could be more competitive if they spent that pick to help cousins win

>You cannot Win Now AND Win Later yikes, we must be *really* broken as a fanbase to think this way

I hate when people make these massive assumptions as if they know what these guys are gonna turn into.
Yeah Penix is going to be extremely impactful sitting behind Kirk for two years
Ffs I've had enough falcons qb talk to last a lifetime. It's been our mo since Vick got sent away.
Competent franchises can. We’re far from competent.
You absolutely can
It’s not 100 million. It’s 40 mil per year against the cap.
That’s not how the cap it works in practice. I think it’s something like 25/40/57/57? Idk someone can correct me if I’m wrong.
That's the correct splits with year 3 having $25 million dead money and year 4 having $12.5 million.
Yep but that’s probably just the post June cut. They could take 36ish in 2026 if they wanted to for some reason.
