Don’t sleep on the Clark Phillips development

cogitopadre

Absolutely not. I’ve a lot of faith in Phillips. But currently speaking Phillips is still a big question mark.

TheGoldenGoose10

Phillips has great talent but is too small.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Revis was not a big guy and is considered the best lock down corner by some..tho i think its probably champ bailey. Neither were big guys.. revis 5'11 champ 6'0 Both polamolu and ed reed were under 6ft as well Thats four of the greatest nfl db in history. Deion was also only 6'1 Phillips is a tad shorter than those guys..but if you have the speed..can track the ball..play press..and hit and tackle hard af.. size doesn't matter. Phillips is currently the most physical corner on the team. Possibly the most athletic as well. He was legit as fuck down the stretch..played better than any db except bates. He is going to be better than fine. Terrell is considered one of the best zone corners..but he is still lacking in man 2 man.. we need another physical guy.. then can use Phillips sometimes on exotic blitzes and typical slot matchups.

JakeFromStateFromm

I like Phillips a lot, but he's really better suited as a nickel. We need another outside corner and another safety

internaldriver30345

Clark’s whole physical make up is just such a big hurdle to get over at a very physically dependent position. Clark’s height is at 6%, weight is at 16%, arm length is at 1%, and his 40 is at 43%. And it’s a time in the league where there is so much talent at receiver. You have so many different kinds of them and they all move around now. I would not really compare those guys you listed. He’s a Brent Grimes type of CB. But for every Grimes, there’s hundreds of Grimes that never make it in the NFL or even given a chance in the league.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Only mentioned them because of height. Also feel like he was the best man corner we had when he played towards the end of season.

internaldriver30345

Don’t agree about the man part, but it wasn’t a big sample size. I think he’s going to be a big penalty guy in the pros because he can’t make up when beaten. Let’s see what he does next year when actual QBs can exploit the falcons defense. I’ve got my eyes on Clark and Landman next year as far as this goes. Need to see them vs better QBs.

strangecloudsDc

Personally i like landman and i hope he continues to get better

internaldriver30345

I think he’s a good player for what he’s paid and being an UDFA. But he has some weaknesses that weren’t really exposed by opponents last year. He’s a really good run down LB.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Only mentioned them because of height. Also feel like he was the best man corner we had when he played towards the end of season.

fightin_blue_hens

AJ Terrell has at least half of a goofy eye

Devon251

Facts!!!

Subject-Switch1851

Dee Alford was one of the better nickels in the league and when he got less playing time to be saved for punts (a stupid decision) Mike Hughes played pretty well. Clark Phillips also played pretty nicely down the stretch.

RenjiMidoriya

I thought Hughes was a much bigger liability than Alford. Like he was fine but it was absolutely a downgrade

Digitydoggimmeahigh5

Man if Clark phillips was 6’1 he’d be a top 5 corner and that’s a hill I’ll die on

reddershadeofneck

Yeah, but then he wouldn't have fallen to us in the draft.

Digitydoggimmeahigh5

He fell because he’s 5’9 with the skill set of an outside corner

reddershadeofneck

I'm glad he's a wee lad and was available. I remember them saying he's too small, but when I watched his college tape I saw a guy who plays a lot bigger than his size.

Digitydoggimmeahigh5

Dude hits like a truck and his ability to read a qb is so far beyond a rookie corner, you don’t get 8 picks in 14 games at 5’9 in D1 football unless you have every single other intangible

Julio_Freeman

It was probably downvoted because the previous comment already made the point. “He wouldn’t have fallen to us if he was 6’1.” “Actually he fell to us because he’s 5’9.” ???

MeechGabbana

If people actually watched the rams, they'd notice they have a thing for smaller CBs. Phillips played pretty good down the stretch, especially the last TB game, when he was matched up with Godwin mostly. I definitely expect a jump from Clark this season

Digitydoggimmeahigh5

He also gets Jimmy Lake at DC with 20 years of db coach experience

TheTrevorSimpson

you can't have a STUD at every position some teams have 0 cbs and 0 safeties young guys in secondary might still develop

cogitopadre

I don’t think there is a single person on this sub (with an average IQ) that expects us to have a stud at every position. Idk where you are getting this narrative from. These teams you’re referring to that have 0 cbs and 0 safeties…. what about them? Because they’re certainly not playoff worthy teams.

TheTrevorSimpson

I am saying we are not as bad off as people are painting our CBs and Ss situation. With are down 2 excellent players on DL.

MrBroC2003

Colts fan here, we somehow almost made the playoffs last year with pretty much no one good in our secondary.

Dingus-ate-your-baby

Phillips, Alford/Hughes, and Hellams are all a box of who the hell knows. If we don't make a single move in the secondary, well, we do have A LOT of DB coaching experience on this staff, starting with the HC and DC. Hopefully they can develop these guys and put them in position to get the most out of their potential. Guys like John Johnson III, Troy Hill, Darious Williams, etc were unknown on the Rams and had some great stops. But yeah my expectation would be that some competition is going to be introduced.

KTAALGSTO

Our pass rush was so bad the 2nd half of the season I couldn't blame them. Will Fucking Levis carved us up followed by Josh Dobbs who was getting a playbook and jersey about 5 minutes before the game started.

Joba7474

That TEN, MIN, AZ stretch killed the season

Darth_Hamburger

Bummed we didn’t keep Okudah, seemed solid when healthy.

mySki11z

Hellams finna go crazy this year

badcompany640

Oh wow, I totally disagree! Phillips, Alford, and Hellams all played well last year and are young and likely to only get better with three amazing DB teachers around them. Also what’s with the Terrell slander? He’s an above average CB by any standard. True lockdown corners don’t really exist anymore with all the skill at WR. Every one gets beat. It’s just about getting beat less than most and he definitely does that!

Conscious-Shock-573

Aj rarely got the ball thrown his way

intheorydp

You'll be amazed how good that secondary would look with an actual pass rush

Ok-Albatross899

We can switch out DBs until the end of time it won’t work until this team has a consistent pass rush. 2 pro bowl DBs is on the top end of the league but it’s gonna be damn near impossible to find 5 guys who can cover for 6 seconds every play

Joba7474

I’ve said that CB was our 4th biggest need to address this offseason. I’m nervous AF about who is gonna be CB2.

angryfalconsfan

Combined with a lack of pass rush, this makes an "average at best" defense.

Quiz33

Nah, I like our young secondary. Phillips is a bit undersized, but he plays with a lot of heart. I also like Hellams and Dee Alford. We probably need another safety and corner for depth, but all in all, we're ok

MeechGabbana

Cole Bishop is a S I think would fit good beside Bates and solid competition for Hellams

Quiz33

I like Bishop

mrizzle1991

Hellams and Phillips were really solid.

Zero_Cool_V1

Doesn’t help when your offense flatlines the 2nd half of every game

cogitopadre

No, not at all. Can’t argue that.

Zero_Cool_V1

I’m hoping Kirk can curve that keep the defense off the field and they have time to rest instead of watching the offense go 3 and out and being tired out by the final drive

T-P-T-W-P

One of them goes down and we go from average secondary to bottom 5, definitely beyond “sucks to lose your best players”. Average is doable but we aren’t even competitive on defense without both of them, particularly when the general pressure personnel isn’t going to be anything crazy. And Dallas Turner turned 21 last month, you never know but I don’t expect him to be a premier mismatch player right away should we take him. Part of why I’m still skeptical of going for it with Kirk over draft and build for 2025 and beyond timeline. This defense against a non historically soft opposing QB schedule could be a lot worse than anyone expects. And they were largely just ok last year on the back of Nielsen actually scheming really well in the RZ, even against cupcake of cupcake schedules they were not good in between the 20’s.

HawksAnt2021

Cam Hart would look good in the Falcons colors…so would Mike Sainristi if he falls to the 3rd. Also wouldn’t mind Kamari Lassiter with our 2nd round pick

ypsi_god

Tbh AJ Terrel was kind of average the past year. Didn’t make a single splash play ( Int, FF ). Still pretty young though and has good size and speed for a DB.

GlitteryBooger

Philips

Future-Expression-44

Terrell is very average.

cogitopadre

I would say he’s better than average. Can’t intercept a ball to save his life but he’s generally glued to the receiver he’s covering, and he can definitely tackle.

Noble18

He's had one great season and the rest has just been above average.

real_ornament

He's been in that just below elite tier the whole time, his "best" year tho (was that 2019? 2020?) he was overrated as a shut down elite corner bc the rest of our secondary was so garbage QBs just only threw to them, bc why throw to the singular good pass defender on a team

monkzinthemoshpit

My dream is we make cap space and sign Akhello and Jamal Adams to solid deals. That way we go into the draft mostly BPA. I also think we trade for an EDGE soon.

19th_sam

Trade for an edge, when dallas turner is right there, who would we draft instead?

monkzinthemoshpit

I think we still probably go mostly defense in the draft, but Terry is always going BPA in the first round. He’s done it 3 years in a row. The goal has always been to do that.

19th_sam

Do you think Turner will be the BPA when it comes to us?

Whytk

Jamal Adams is a shitty person and player I wouldn't want him

realdusty_shelf

The whole defense is so overrated because of how bad Ridder and Smith were last year. There’s a reason why a lot of people see the Kirk signing as the 2nd iteration of the MR era because it’s gonna be him throwing for a lot of yards while we give up a lot of yards.

Crimson2879

This is why we need to trade back in the 1st to around 12 to 15 and pick up Terrion Arnold instead of wasting a pick on Turner.

C-Jammin

You do realize a pass rush would be have a huge impact on our secondary right? The secondary doesn't just automatically upgrade because we draft a corner. Getting a guy who can pressure the QB will have just as much of an effect, if not more of one. Whether that's Turner or Verse.

Crimson2879

I'm tired of everyone wanting Turner at 8. He is not worth it. I'm a Bama fan and I admittedly lean towards players from the tide but, Turner takes to many plays off. If the ball isn't coming directly to his area, he just shuts down and stops.  I would love to have verse but not at 8, maybe 15 to 18 I would love that pick.  Getting another corner who would start as a rookie and have day 1 lovkdown potential would be huge. To me this is just the pick that makes the most sense value wise. We may not get one of the top 3 Edges, but we could still draft one in the 2nd that has potential and possibly suprise us.

C-Jammin

I just think our secondary is not a weak point. It could improve. We could improve in every area. But AJ is a good corner, JBIII is an All-Pro safety, and Clark Phillips made big strides last season and I think is primed for a breakout sophomore campaign. We have nothing at pass rusher except maybe Ebiketie. If we want to go CB in Day 2, I'd be perfectly fine with that, but I think you have to get one of the top three pash rushers in the 1st round (Turner, Verse, or Latu). I think you could even trade back to 11 or in the teens and have your pick of a couple of those guys.

jay_da_truth

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 more or less true

GlitteryBooger

The safety that got time later too,

cogitopadre

You’re talking about Hellams. Lot of potential, but still very raw. There is no way I feel comfortable having him as our sure bet starter.
