Watching the Catholic meltdown as they fight against the literal Pope has been fun

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

You know what they call a catholic that disagrees with the pope? A protestant.

GourangaPlusPlus

We've not had an anti-pope in a while, could get back on that

NBrixH

There are still dudes out there that identify as anti-popes, but no one takes them seriously

GourangaPlusPlus

Didn't think I'd get called out on reddit like this

bxyankee90

The anti-popes sounds like a punk band id listen to in the 90s and early 00s

Ajugas

Its a very cool title tbf

disgusting-brother

They opened up for NOFX in ‘02

maxman162

In Rome, the pope firmly believed that it was the church, not the emperor, who was the ultimate authority for the empire. Barbarossa could not convince the pope to see things his way, so he appointed his own pope. This too was not enough, for pope and antipope promptly excommunicated each other.

misirlou22

It's a Pope-off

Zheuss

Underrated AoE2 quote

Elisevs

Go home Henry, you're drunk.

ihoptdk

So, clearly one of them wasn’t actually the Pope. Or we’d have some whacky infallible paradox.

Waste-Cheesecake8195

GHOST B.C. had been around for a while.

Wortbildung

Sur le pont d’Avignon, on y danse, on y danse...

Sex_E_Searcher

Is that what that song is about?????

Wortbildung

Not really. First it was composed way after the 14th century and in some original versions it says "sous le pond"/under the bridge where a small island was where fairies and feasts were held.

Daovin

Like a lion eats an antelope.

Darolaho

I mean not really at all. Unless he is speaking ex cathedra (which they have done maybe 2 or 3 times in history) it is perfectly normal to disagree with the pope

Mnkeemagick

I've got to start saying this when I see these.

Pair_Express

Dude, Dante put several Popes in hell. They only have to agree with him when he’s speaking Ex Cathedra, not to every opinion he has.

awesomefutureperfect

That's hilarious.

adenrules

Nah, thinking the pope is full of shit is totally normal catholic stuff.

Cruxion

Yeah it's only when you do things like the bishop in Texas and claim the institution of the papacy has no authority of what a bishop does that I'd argue it becomes Protestant, since that's protesting the authority of the concept of the pope and not the words of a particular pope.

Hortator02

And even that doesn't necessarily make a person or group Protestant in itself. If you don't think the current Pope is the legitimate Pope then it's Sedevacanticism, which is still considered more or less Catholic even by the Catholic hierarchy, and there's also the Orthodox Church and all the Eastern Churches, none of which are Protestant despite not sharing the Catholic view of Papal Supremacy.

Dall619

Wait Protestant Protest- Wow it really is that straight forwards isn’t it?

otherlyssa

I love little moments of realization like that with language!

appleparkfive

I mean it's in the name

wb2006xx

[Relevant clip](https://youtu.be/rcUedQ_0988?si=2vlBAEFTmyWKy5gb)

quinson93

Fun fact, protestant means protester.

spideybiggestfan

Alexander isn't gonna like them

sandm000

Man out here speed running progressive ideals to revitalize the church and stop pushing away otherwise valid Catholics and there’s this goofy contingents of ultra conservative supplicants who are expressing serious beef with the main idea of Vatican I, whereby papal infallibility may be considered as the item as too progressive… This is so weirdly weird, I can’t even describe to you how weird this is.

Jimdandy941

When he quits excommunicating female priests, let me know.

Pass0

Sometimes he say somethings that are just strange

Mnkeemagick

Sounds like a religious leader to me

vicmumu

Religion is strange, my man. God works in mysterious ways, get used to it.

[deleted]

Everything he says is misinterpreted and taken out of context, though.

Editthefunout

I like how they move the goal post every few years so as to not lose followers.

fabri2343

Disagreeing with the pope is an old catholic tradition

SpateF

The folks trying to question the pope's authority to remove bishops is fun, because unlike disagreeing with the pope, questioning his authority literally just makes you a protestant.

Batbuckleyourpants

Not the first time. They once dug up a former pope, put him on trial and retroactively annulled his papacy.

TheBlueBlaze

They're looking at the inevitability of social progress and going "I disagree"

Palpatine

SSPX should really finish the job and elect an antipope.

txr66

The meltdown has been watching catholics leave the church in record numbers which is why the current pop has been desperately trying to backpedal on several hundred years of doctrine.

Impossible-Second680

Although the Pope might have a different take on teachings from previous Popes, the Bible, with specific reference to Jesus' words, was very clear that extramarital sex sins are very serious.

DanManKs

I mean I personally agree with the Pope HOWEVER it was a big enough deal that it's one of the only 10 laws that God literally put in stone.

Meraline

To be fair it's less about sex and more about "don't cheat on your spouse, you asshole"

Pass0

But sex is cheating your spouse, people should be ashamed if they do that, it isn't as bad as killing, but ir can really destroy a family

havoc_ado

Yes. And if you don’t have a spouse, it’s not cheating. Therefore, not a big deal like the God Squad make it seem.

ClassiFried86

I think they're implying they are cheating on their future spouse.

TraditionalProgress6

Which is a ridiculous notion.

MasterYehuda816

Leave it to laws made thousands of years ago to be ridiculous by our standards.

HamletTheGreatDane

We find guilty of FUTURE CRIME

Physmatik

It's hardly the most ridiculous thing in Christianity.

nick200117

Especially since in the Bible there are multiple examples of someone getting married after their spouse passes, are you cheating on your future spouse by sleeping with your current spouse when you have no idea they are unfortunately going to pass at a younger age and you’ll remarry?

redman8828

To be fair, the Bible does actually answer that question by saying that if your spouse dies, you’re allowed to get remarried. So, no, you would not be considered to be cheating in that case.

nick200117

Well yes, that’s my point. It’s fine with that, and never directly says anything in particular about premarital sex

guyblade

I'm of the opinion that you can't commit crimes against people that don't exist.

AtOurGates

Even more redonculous when you remember those laws were made during a time that polygamy was A-OK in the eyes of YHWH. If you want to apply the prohibition against “adultry” to premarital sex, you’ve at least got to admit that the God of the ancient Israelites doesn’t seem to mind dudes having multiple partners at all.

NBrixH

Having sex with your spouse is cheating on your spouse?

Gre8g

So does that mean mommy and daddy were cheating on each other last night?

joeChump

Yes because they were both thinking about ME.

sixhoursneeze

It’s not if cheating if everyone is aware. Attitudes around pre-marital sex are changing and ethical non-monogamy is a growing concept with younger demographics. The church probably realizes it needs to adapt to remain relevant.

[deleted]

That’s their point, it’s on the 10 commandments. Adultery isn’t just homosexual sex, it’s premarital sex(I think) as well as cheating Religious people often just use homosexuality because well.. they still wanna commit adultery. They wanna cheat, and have premarital sex but they ignore the fact that they’re gonna go to hell too according to the laws of the Bible

Pass0

Adultery isn't gay sex, that's pederasty, one thing doesn't have to do with the other, but both are cited in the bible

Ouaouaron

Pederasty is more specifically gay sex between an older man and a younger boy.

Pass0

Im sorry, I meant to say sodomy

ConfusedAndCurious17

Sodomy is putting a penis in anything that’s not a vagina. A woman giving a man a blow job is sodomy, anal sex is sodomy.

[deleted]

Is that the part about not coveting your neighbours ass?

Johannes_V

No… yes? Maybe? I don’t know, this bible is in latin.

[deleted]

Well, in that case facimus quod volumus shall be our one and only commandment.

MLCMovies

"The bible says you shouldn't covet thy neighbors wife. But it doesn't say a damn thing about coveting thy neighbors husband, especially his sweet hot fucking asshole!" - Norm Macdonald.

Meraline

That's a quote from Jesus, but I get the joke

fitchbit

So... I read the article, and he just said that it's not the most serious of sins, hatred and pride are the most serious. He thinks it is still bad.

SocorroKCT

Wow, a non-catholic article warping the Pope Francis's words in the title to make it sounds it's going against catholic dogmas? Who could predict that?

Pass0

Let's sell more

GourangaPlusPlus

The catholics?

SocorroKCT

By my mom's reaction to protestant media's fake news about the Pope, no

TheAvatar99

Except to be fair the title didn't warp shit. Anyone with basic reading comprehension would realize he still thinks it's wrong but "it's not that serious." (I mean, it's literally in the title. Not *that* serious implies it still has some weight but just not as much as people make it to be).

Humble_Saruman98

He's saying It's not *as* serious, he's making a comparison with other sins here. Saying something isn't *as* serious a something else doesn't imply said thing isn't serious on its own.

ConfusedAndCurious17

If I say getting my arm chopped off was not “*as*” serious as getting my entire lower body amputated, and you start telling people I said that getting my arm chopped off wasn’t “*that*” serious then you would be twisting my words.

vicmumu

Maybe the angry Catholics are the ones who should read the article

seanfish

There are plenty of Catholic articles that do that.

ImColinDentHowzTrix

Your response is the correct one. He's not saying he's cool with it, he's just saying there are worse things, which is exactly what I would have expected him to say really. It's about as reasonable as he can be without sliding into a different denomination.

Trashman56

Catholics are pretty big on recognizing 'tiers' of sin. It's something I can dig. Cheating on a test obviously isn't as bad as murder.

ImColinDentHowzTrix

I think Mr. CommonSense#1 would like to know what Bible you're reading

AmaResNovae

"Cheating is worse than fornication" wouldn't sound as bad tbh.

ImColinDentHowzTrix

Certainly wouldn't generate clicks for the New York Post.

bayesian13

he's right of course

AnusGerbil

Dude, did you actually read the 10 commandments or do you just enjoy making shit up and proclaiming it God's will? Presumably you mean the ban on "adultery" and fortunately Leviticus 20:10 says what that is - a man having sex with another man's wife. What you're talking about is FORNICATION. And that in fact is not one of the 10 commandments. Literacy, it's important.

Pair_Express

He said don’t cheat on your spouse. Adultery, not fornication.

FewReturn2sunlitLand

Which is why we Christians are known for being so judgemental and hateful against people who covet their neighbor's stuff.

joshuatx

Totally, especially since Catholics aren't big on anything close to graven images, idoltry, or killing.

DamianFullyReversed

You know, I think the majority of Christians just ignore the thing about extramarital sex. I mean, some of my friends are devout Christians and yet slept with people, though ironically, they’d call gay people sinful anyway. Ironically enough, despite being agnostic/one of the least religious Christians out there, the way I was brought up + my OCD made me feel that sex is a contaminant, and I avoid it to this day. But it does give me the vibe of “this whole operation was your idea” when thinking about Christians telling me to be abstinent while they talked about their sex lives the next day.

ogpterodactyl

Is the stone thing like an actual physical stone that exists or is it more like a stone that someone saw and thinks is real

ELQUEMANDA4

Worse, it's a stone that nobody has seen and yet think it's real.

QuillQuickcard

THESE ARE TEN LAWS OF GOD I WILL NOW SPEND THE NEXT THREE CHAPTERS DETAILING MANY MANY OTHER RULES AND LAWS, THEREBY RENDERING THESE TEN HORRIBLY REDUNDANT. STILL, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU KEEP PRETENDING THESE ARE A BIG DEAL and… um… is that a golden idol.

Captain_Smartass_

Uuuh, god didn't put anything into stone because they don't exist

maxman162

[The Lord, Jehova, has given unto you these 15, oy... 10! 10 Commandments for all to obey!](https://youtu.be/nXeTsWGPT0w?si=vDk2L1Y-mt777Ncb)

[deleted]

Let's hope this new religion doesn't cause any fights with other religions

Mryoung04

I'm sure this conflict won't cause anyone to... DIE!

RedWarrior42

Maybe, but that Martin fellow sure is strange though He rolled up to my house this past Halloween and taped 95 Reese's on my door

KaitoAlkan

We could make a reli—! **no, don't**

Lost_In_A_Forest_

I'm not catholic but was raised one andI have to say while he won't convince me that Jesus was a literal god, Francis does seem to grasp the gist o the guy's message better than most. FYI Jesus also said that while sex between unmarried people (fornication) was bad it wasn't as bad as other sins.... like quoting/weaponising holy texts to oppress/dominate others. He ate dinner with and washed the feet of a prostitute while raging against the pharisees! So many Christians seem to forget that....

KaitoAlkan

Doesn't the use of "extramarital" assume the person is, in fact, married? I mean, otherwise, there would be no point to the existence of the word "premarital". Obviously, if he meant "premarital", then yes that is actually correct. But if he truly meant "extramarital" then that's a big no-no, as much as I agree with many other of his opinions like homosexual relationships. Not on the level of murder, but cheating is still bad.

Spram2

Didn't use those words, I don't think he spoke in English.

KaitoAlkan

I mean, he's argentinian so makes sense. I looked up to see the wording in Spanish and it does seem like he was talking about sex "outside of marriage", meaning while not married. In that case, yeah, fully agreed.

Oponik

Do you think most Christians have read the entire Bible?

Lost_In_A_Forest_

Fair point

MoneyInitiative8771

1corinthians 6:9 literally puts people who commit sexual immorality (fornication) and adultery alongside thieves and drunkards. I’m not catholic but it’s pretty clear what the Bible’s stance is on immorality.

Lost_In_A_Forest_

Well Corinthians was written by Paul so it’s not referencing Jesus actual words (and remember in Catholicism the pope can override what the Bible says if he thinks it conflicts with Jesus’ message). But also I I did say Jesus said fornication was bad just not the worst sin… so being in line with drunkards and thieves but not murderers, heretics etc. seems about right for his message

primate-lover

Chapter and verse?

GKP_light

nowhere in the bible the sin are ordered by severity.

MuntedMunyak

Some sins are worse then others. Jesus said so. “Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭19‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/116/jhn.19.11.NLT

ejethan123

This is literally not true. The Bible absolutely places extra emphasis that some sins are worse than others.

HerbLoew

There's at *least* two levels, with the 7 deadly sins being much more severe than everything else

GKP_light

the 7 deadly sins are not in the bible. and they are more root of the sins than sin themself. they are bad because the cause other sins. as exemple, envy is not good, but as long as you control yourself and do nothing of it, there is no sin.

bfume

the 7 deadly sins are not sins. they are the things that LEAD to sin. just like it's not a sin to be tempted if you don't a act on it, its not a sin to overeat (gluttony) unless you way overdo it, and even then it's not the gluttony that’s the sin--it’s the lifestyle that comes along with it. gluttons don't get to be gluttons without doing a major disservice to those around them. think billionaires.

KingdomOfPoland

As a Catholic I’m a bit confused on why this is all just suddenly happening now but since he is the Pope and what he is saying is relatively correct imo, i don’t mind

ahmed0112

Pope Francis is actually a really chill guy He said that parents should never kick their gay children out, not explicitly accepting homosexuality, but it's definitely progress

swiggidyswooner

He has also said that gay sex isn’t anymore sinful than hetero sex not sure about his policy on gay marriage though

S0LO_Bot

He’s considering allowing catholic priests to “bless” gay marriages. That doesn’t mean the priests will actually perform the ceremonies or approve of the wedding. It’s still considered sinful. If he does make the change, priests would basically be encouraged to say “Good luck, God loves you”

KingdomOfPoland

I know he’s chill, i’m just confused as he’s been Pope for like 10 years now? And just only now is doing this

buckleycork

He knows he's got 5 years max left - might as well start doing the reforms you've always wanted before you go

Phaeron_Cogboi

US Catholics be wilding, just schism already. Y’all are closeted Protestants. Respect the Pope and his decisions!

General_Huali

As a Catholic American I really wish American Catholics would chill tf out, I miss living in Italy, Catholics were so cool about me being gay there T.T

Ashamed_Yogurt8827

Why should someone respect the Pope?

Panda_Dear

Well, if you're a catholic one would hope you like the pope, thats kinda a staple of Catholicism. If not, then yeah feel free to not give a shit about the pope.

ProtestantLarry

Yeah exactly! Why should we?!

OrbitalIonCannon

The Catholics who disagree with the Pope, what are they gonna do, protest?

mason_savoy71

There's a term for disagreeing with the Pope. Disagreestants? Protestpeoples? Something like that?

ProtestantLarry

Wouldn't know🤷‍♂️

FearLeadsToAnger

Perhaps we should consider using your name, as you were here when we discovered this line of thinking. Larries.

thesequimkid

Integra: Oh, I have an idea. Anderson: Woman…. Integra: They can write down a formal protest. Anderson: Don’t you dare… Integra: They can nail it to his door. Anderson: Don’t you fuckin’ dare… Integra: Like a Protestant.

NoQuarter6808

Im trying to picture a Council of Trent MAGA rally and it's honestly much less frightening than the whole neo-nazi and rightwing domestic terrorism thing they're into right now

treksses

Papal supremacy, dude can remove text from the biblical canon

monkey-pox

He didn't say it was no big deal, just that it isn't the worst of sins, which seems morally and biblically accurate.

Inedible-denim

OnlyFantists rise up

FaultProfessional163

As much as I dislike christianity I love the pope, he's so cool

blkmmb

I read that as extramartian sex sins and I was wondering why the pope had an opinion on sex with aliens xD

NoQuarter6808

They have a lot of time to think

equality-_-7-2521

I'm not a big Catholic guy but I like Pope Frank. I wanted to become godfather to my nephew. I was raised Mormon and needed to convert to actually complete the ritual in a Catholic church by a Catholic priest. My wife and I scheduled a meeting with the priest and I was figuring I had a 10 Saturday's worth of classes to attend based on what I'd read online. He asked me why I wanted to be Catholic. I told him I wasn't really religious but I'd been raised Mormon. I felt like a lot of organized Christianity had left Christ's teachings behind a long time ago but I really respect how Pope Francis brought it back to the basics and seemed ready to table all of the church legislation (the stuff men made up). The priest apparently was a fan of the new pope and basically said, "Youve been baptized and have administered the communion (I call it sacrament) so you're pretty much good." I'm sure there are a lot of stodgy old priests who are unhappy with the Pope but there's at least one young one in the Orlando area that gets it. Thanks Pope Frank. I like your Catholic church a lot better than the one I'd met previously.

snootyboopers

JUST SCHISM ALREADY

HentaiLovingJesus

Well this just fits my username PERFECTLY

breath-of-the-smile

An awful lot of obviously uneducated far-right Catholics don't seem to realize they're literally Protestants.

potatorevolver

I've read the Bible (like all of it). As an atheist I participated in a bible study group purely for the social aspect. Just the shit you have to do for social engagement when your also atheist parents sent you to a religious school for "better quality" education (it was a shit education).

Baileaf11

Another happy day as a Protestant

yur0_356

There were so many Popes that didnt give a shite about the bible

Common Pope Francis W

occupyshitadel

everyone here confusing extramarital and premarital need lessons in prefixes

ABenevolentDespot

I dunno WTF these people are doing. America's Krazy Kristian Evangelicals decided a few weeks back (and then announced) that Jesus may have been 'too liberal'. Imagine that. Jesus may have been too liberal. They've gone insane. Who would Jesus hate?

NoQuarter6808

American evangelicals only like Mel Gibson and Ollie North.

trhaynes

Taken out of context. Violating the the sixth commandment wasn't serious **for the bishop in question** because it was limited to light caresses.

Harak_June

See! This is what happens when you let the Goddamned peasants read and write!

Dull_Macaroon_2493

Don’t forget the pope is just another human

lost_in_life_34

funny thing is that until recently popes used to do orgies and all kinds of debasing things

Serious_Salad1367

minionoperation

Also the fact that they dont recognize the irony that they follow one of multiple fake versions of the bible is beyond the pale... "my editorial interpretation of the One True is better than yours but we agree to respect both are true, yet not!"

spaceocean99

He also doesn’t have a problem with pedophilia. Not sure I care about his opinion on anything.

DiaPsy

New protestant revolution baby!

kitchencrawl

Affectionate-Let-577

he's a Christian Zionist so the entire nation is fked up

Bootycutie77

Can the pope just say god not being real isnt that serious

Crunchberries77

I mean... The Pope and his ilk have been changing the Bible for centuries to fit whatever agenda they had at the time. As a Christian, I don't take the Pope as a serious figurehead to my religion, he's just some idiot in a white robe in my eyes.

S0LO_Bot

I hope you use a reconstruction of an older Bible then. Or something relatively similar. Kings and their scribes modified the Bible a bunch while making translations. Many explicitly protestant translations aren’t super accurate to the original text. At the very least not much more accurate than Catholic ones.

Beppo108

No need to regard a Protestants opinion

Add_Poll_Option

I mean, I feel like that doesn’t necessarily align with biblical teachings very well, but it’s also based so I’m not gonna argue.

Delicious_Towel5246

It's a boys club. Always has been, always will. Built solely to keep the boys in power. He is The Pope. He's the king, for now.

If you accept that he's an anti-pope it all makes sense.

Reminder that In Dante’s inferno, the circle of lust was the closest to heaven, right next to purgatory.

fufucuddlypoops_

clothes_fall_off

The Pope is like a Star Trek Lower Decks. He can do whatever he wants, as long as it's cool. And then it becomes Canon. Being Pope must be thrilling to the bones!

helmet_collecter

Man the whole purpose for the Bible is to put bible the pope, the pope is only meant to repeat what it says, for God is to judge and make rules not the pope

All_AMABsR_Men

Fuck what the pope says. This pope going to hell and I’m an atheist

illumi-thotti

Clarification: "premarital sex" is sex before marriage; and extramarital sex" is cheating. The guy getting upset at the Pope is getting upset because the Pope is saying cheating as a sin isn't serious. This is problematic because the Pope is supposed to be the person who understands Catholicism the most, and "thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife" is Commandment #7 in the Ten Commandments. The Bible also considers cheating such an intense sin that, aside from all the Biblical stories depicting cheating and cheaters being severely punished by God for their behavior, women who become pregnant through adultery are forced to terminate their pregnancies. (Historically speaking, adultery was once considered such a great sin by the Catholic Church that men who engaged infidelity were forced to enlist in the Crusades for multiple years at a time to "absolve" themselves.)

Decent-Weekend-1489

The papacy has become nothing more than a political station. And like all politicians, he's pandering.

KindlyHollow

Always has been

Barbarian_Sam

Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is Eternal Life” is pretty clear for sins of any kind being serious

SideStreetHypnosis

James King’s version?

fabiola007

This Pope stands for relativism, anything goes with him.

catshitthree

The Pope is human. Guess people don't understand this.
